It's More Fun in Compostela Valley... Let's visit Governor Uy!

Photos - sent to me by press information office of Governor Uy:

Waiting For the Promise

The most awaited season of the year has finally come. Again. The most joyous month is here at last. At times it makes me wonder how life would be without the month of December. Something is indeed very special on this season that brings about changes not only in the atmosphere but also in our zest for living and life.

In this beloved country Philippines, the air becomes coller especially during mornings when fields and forests embrace and kiss the morning fog.

The first streak of light that pierces the darkness from the earth is the sign of life. The stillness of the dawn which has long awakened by the crowning of the rooster and singing of the birds add color and harmony to the fabric of God's creation. This is the beauty of life and the joy of mankind.

December is the "well of life" where you draw a renewed commitment. Christmas is a testimony that the whole creation and its people are worth living and dying for as did the Messiah. For many of us, December is a glow that blossoms across the Eastern horizon bringing the promise of a new day.

Yes Christmas is just around the corner...

I always become very thoughtful and melancholy during this very special season. I am sure, that's okay. For me, and for each one of you, my dear readers. During this time, I try to delete topics such as war, corruption, killing, natural disasters et cetera.

Let's consider it like this: Christmas should be the song that awakens our hardened hearts; to move us up to create a better world, a new earth and new people at least. Yes, I know, I am very much blue-eyed!

May this holy season bring us all the peace and joy that we are always waiting for. Merry Christmas to all of you!

Fastest Growth in Asean?

I was really surprised receiving the news, that the Philippine economy moved to the fastest in Southeast Asia in the third quarter at 7.1 percent from a year earlier, coming just a little behind China's growth and surpassing projections.

I received these news while waiting at the airport in Manila for my flight back to Davao City.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda commented it like this: "This was possible due to sustained confidence in the leadership of President Aquino and his administration, which has consistently equated good governance with good economics. The government has pushed to ensure this economic growth is felt by the broadest number of people!"

The German Ambassador for the Philippines, Dr. Joachim Heidorn, whom I interviewed just a little while ago, had the same opinion. By the way, the interview shall be published here soon.

Philippines - the fastest growth in Asean? I pray and I wish, it might not become a nine days fly... .

PhilPop Enriches Filipino Music

Filipino music is indeed a genuine expression of Filipinos not only as a unified group, but also as unique individuals. The PhilPOP MusicFest Foundation, Inc. is an advocate of this notion, which is it established the Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPOP) early this year. Now, it is already setting the stage for 2013.

PhilPOP is a search for Filipino musical composers, whether residing here or abroad, who can showcase musical ingenuity and passion. Songwriters can start sending their entries by January 1, 2013 till the end of February through www.philpop.com.ph .

The PhilPOP competition has generated excitement since it kicked off earlier this year because of Filipinos' love for music. The spotlight being given to singwriters now is an undertaking of national identity.

The PhilPOP Foundation sees Filipino music as a cultural treasure and an indication of national identity. The foundation is again giving Filipinos the opportunity to become their own inspiration. Then, it cam be cascaded to future generations, which in turn can make their own music.

By the way, PhilPOP is also presented by Maynilad, Smart, Meralco, PLDT, Resorts Word Manila, TV 5, Metro Pacific Investment Corp., NLEX, PICC, Sun Cellular, KBP and Philex.

The foundation also preserves the vanishing musical germs and empowers Filipino songwriters whose music can inspire and motivate a nation. Kudos to PhilPOP.

Try Mindanao!

Mount Apo is the highest mountain in the Philippines located between Davao City in Davao del Sur Province and Cotabato Province. This majestic peak is one of the country's most popular climbing destinations.

It's the centre of wonders  in Mindanao and one of the highest land-based biological diversity in terms of flora and fauna per unit area.

It's also home to one of the world's largest eagles, the critically endangered Philippine Eagle, which is the country's national bird.

Holiday Hazards

Re-posted Editorial from MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR with friendly permission of the publisher Marietta Siongco:

This the season to be careful. As the Christian season approaches and homes and establishments get festooned with various lighting fixtures, it would be well for all of us to be mindful of the actual materials we use for such decorations. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has given out a list of approved Christmas lights brands, and of the scores that are being sold in he market, only 20 have actually passed muster. Most of us do not think twice about our purchases and rarely even look at what brand of lights we buy, but our choices can literally be a matter of life and death, We look back to 2004 and remember that even then-house speaker Jose de Venecia lost a daughter to a fire in their home that originated from faulty Christmas lights. Dozens of other such fires have occurred over the years, adding a bitter note to virtually every holiday celebration.

...

However, it is goverment's failure to prevent such brands from being sold in the first place. The DTI has approved only 20 branches - but what does government intend to do with the rest? How do the faulty brands get into the country in the first place? There is an obvious failure here on the part of the government agencies tasked to guard against such faulty and dangerous merchandise.

...

A Railway Network for Davao Region?

This topic is not new. I learned about it already during the early 1980s when I visited Mindanao and especially Davao Region for the first time.

The railway network system is proving to be a necessity for the Davao Region and has been included by the region's development planners for consideration in the region's area development.

Allow me to quote Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, who said: "It may yet become possible during my term!" Del Rosario voiced this out during a press conference held at the Provincial Government Center in Tagum City.

Of course, the Governor is right in saying that Mindanao is lacking road networks. In the Davao Region, there is only one national road which is used to transport both people and products. The fastest way to tyransport people and products is through a railway system and its regime is soon to come. Let's wait and see... .

Music and Religion

Music and religion belong together like fish and the ocean, light and life, the voice and the ear. In the entire universe, we humans are probably the only beings capable of creating and hearing music. The ability to hear is one of the specific gifts that our Creator gave us. Our fragile planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gases only a few kilometers high. Only this atmosphere is the reason why sound waves can spread through the air. Everything behind this atmosphere is ruled by the sheer endless vacuum of outer space, where galaxies and stars explode and implode in impenetrable silence.

According to the biblical narrative, the world began when God broke through his deadly quiet: "And God said: Let there be light!" (Genesis 1:1). God spoke - and light and life resulted from His audible voice. Because life was created by the word. That is why it is in the nature of every person to listen. Like a parabolic mirror, our souls are created to listen to the eternal space of the hereafter, to try and sense whether a word, a sound  or a voice is trying to reach us from there, in order to fill us with meaning.

I love music. I can't live without it. From time to time I have to express myself regarding to this topic. And, I know, Filipinos love big tunes with great words and beautiful melodies, especially when it comes to classical music.

I am hosting radio shows with classical music in the Philippines since many years. Presently, I am blessed and honoured having such show on "The Edge Radio Davao - 104.3 FM. If your time allows it, please tune in: Sundays from 2 to 4 pm... .

To Err is Human - To Forgive is Divine (Part II)

Yes, forgiveness is godhead and theological together. I looked into my dictionaries and found innumerable explanations: "If we are able to forgive, we are belonging to, or, we are having the nature of God. We might be holy, sacred, heavenly or a superhuman-being a priest, a pastor, a clergy, a theologian!"

I guess, it's already a wonderful situation, after being insulted or huty by someone to hear the simple expression "SORRY"... Yes, it's coming from the bottom of the heart. SORRY!

Regarding "seeking forgiveness we can find plenty of passages in our Bible. The most touching part for me is being found in Proverbs 28:13: "You will never succeed in life, if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up, then God will show mercy to you!"

"Erring" taxi drivers never die out. When I returned to Davao from my last Manila trip, I met one of them, asking me an extra charge of 50 Pesos because of incalculable waiting period at the airport. The taxi number and company are noted. Just in case... . Of course, I didn't pay the extra charge and boarded another taxi... .

To Err is Human - To Forgive is Divine

The British poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744) created this saying. And, in my opinion, he is so very right.

In our daily life struggles we also pass innumerable periods of splendid isolation and act, as William Shakespeare said  "Thoughts are Free" by hurting and insulting relatives, friends, and colleagues. Many times we err, and, even we know it, we don't care. BAHAL SILA...

We pray and ask for forgiveness. And, we are so sure of having our complementary ticket in our pockets and pouches. Nobody is perfect - sure! Me too! Yes, I confess! But that's no excuse for broken promises.]

How many times do we commit a mistake? How many times are we mistaken, or get astray? How many times to we sin?

How often do we catch ourselves being roving, wandering and acting eccentric, changeable capricious and not dependable? Or, how many people in our surroundings do we meet daily, who err terrible on their decisions?

To err is human, sure - but not if we err wilfully, intentionally or if legal premeditation is done. But, the second part of this column is much more important: forgiveness...

(To be continued!)

CCTVs in Churches

Repost from the Editorial of MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR from November 16, 2012.

Times are a-changing. Even churches are asked to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in their premises.

Not only business establishments are required to have their premises fitted with those gadgets that are supposed to monitor illegal activities within the area of a guarded enclosure or area.

How many unsuspecting people have been victimized by unscrupulous individuals preying on the pious inside churches. It's a given that ladies especially those going to churches should keep their wits about them and their bags closer to heir bodies.

Even if the bag doesn't contain any valuables, to lose one's identification cards is a hassle and takes quite a while to reconstruct. A churchgoer  has encountered many such ladies who don't care, anyway the bag doesn't contain any valuable possessions.

We wonder if the Archdioceses of Davao has required its churches to install CCTVs in their premises.

...

Times are hard. It's a struggle to survive. Don't leave valuables in full view of anyone with less than pious intentions inside the church.

Forewarned is forewarned.

Compact For Peace Formed

The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) have forged an agreement to mutually cooperate in addressing local peace and security issues in Southern Philippines.

Lawyer Anwar Malang, ARMM chief of staff and currently Interior and Local Governments Secretary, met with Lawyer Randolp Parcasio, legal adviser of Nur Misuari, chair of a faction of the MNLF, in a Makati hotel last Friday.

The MNLF move came as a total turn around from Misuari's earlier provocative statements undermining the Framework Agreement on Bangsamoro signed by the Philippine government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

ARMM is composed of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi areas covered by the September 2, 1996 GOH-MNLF peace agreement.

Parcasio and Malang signed the ARMM-MNLF Peace and Development Compact.

Under the Compact, the group of Misuari is encouraged to cooperate with the ARMM leadership in addressing peace and order problems that have been causing poverty and underdevelopment in Muslim region.

Misuari had been publicly rejecting the Framework Agreement calling it a product of conspiracy between the Malaysian government, Aquino government and the MILF.

Under the Compact, both the MNLF and ARMM leadership will cooperate "to protect life, liberty and poverty of all the people of ARMM. Both the ARMM and the MNLF also vowed to jointly resolve family feud and clan wars in the autonomous region. (PNA)

Peace Be With Us!

Repost of my column in MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR (IN MY OPINION) from Friday, October 19, 2012 with friendly permission of publisher Marietta F. Siongco.

Peace means "calm". Peace means "freedom from war, disturbance or hostilities". Peace means "being free from tumults".

All of us, individuals, groups or nations, as well as societies, have to survive in a life full of uncertain, dangerous and unsure elements. Nobody and on politics on earth, where ever we are living can guarantee a total safety on this existential level. Nevertheless, it's a fundamental task and duty to state politics to flag danger and unsureness in humans living together. The modern state is therefore responsible for inner safety thru a functional legislation and police, for social safety thru organization and formulations of law. External safety by means of military and bilateral diplomacy is imperative. External safety means the threat of national territory and peace-and-order coming from other states.

International relations developed within the last centuries. Safety politics become more and more part of national politics.
...

Globalization has enormously changed national and international safety politics. During the Cold War, the number of conscientious objectors increased dramatically. After the Cold War, state symbols and ceremonies lost their military character. The Europeans are still living now in a so-called "post-heroism" in which the doctrine "to kill other people because of defense through military actions" fades more and more.

...

Talking about peace: One historical example is this: Chief peace negotiators of the Philippine government and the MILF on Monday (October 15, 2012) signed the framework agreement which lays down the groundwork or the final and enduring peace in Mindanao. "In full view of the Filipino people ... we commit to peace. A peace that will be sustained to democratic ideals," President Aquino said.

When I stepped on Mindanao soil for the first time in 1976, I experienced a lot of fearing adventures. I came back in 1982. Then 1983.

I hope and pray, that Mindanao is now free from disturbances and tumults. I stay here for good. I love to live in Mindanao, especially in Davao City. Peace be with us all!

Illegal Schools in Davao City

The committee on education, science and technology, culture and arts of the city council has set a hearing on November 14 on allegations that some private schools in the city are operating without a permit.

Committee chair Councilor Leah Librado-Yap scheduled the hearing after receiving several complaints against such schools.

Yap said she is encouraging other parents whose children are enrolled in illegal schools to immediately report to her office or write to the Department of education Region XI. By the way, the region has a total of 215 registered private schools for the  school year 2011/2012.

There are also operating several (private) language schools without permit but claiming "to be accredited by CHED and/or DepEd".

Philippines is 6th in Internet Access

I love Internet. You love Internet. And many Filipinos too. And, it's amazing, the Philippines ranked sixth among 47 countries world-wide with the most internet freedom, a study by Freedom House (FH), a New York-based freedom watchdog, showed.

The study also showed that the Philippines is the only country in Asia that enjoys freedom in online media.

A total of 20 of the 47 countries examined experienced a negative trajectory in internet freedom since 2011, with bahrain, Pakistan, and Ethopia registering the greatest clines.

the 14 countries with most internet freedom worldwide were: Estonia, USA, Germany, Australia, Hungary, Italy, Philippines, United kingdom, Argentina, South Africa, Brazil, Ukraine, Kenya and Georgia.

KZ Tandingan From Digos City Wins X-Factor

KZ Tandingan, a 21-year-old aspiring singer from Digos City/Davao del Sur, who almost lost her voice from a throat problem in high school, was named the first winner of "The X Factor Philippines" last Sunday night at the PAGCOR Theater. Tandingan, an early favorite of the latest ABS-CBN talent search, bested Gabriel Maturan and others during the show's star-studded season finale after garnering 54.77% of the total viewer's votes.

KZ,  former USEP-classmate from my niece Phoebe Ann, visited the University of Southeastern Philippines campus in Obrero, Davao City and was very welcomed by the USEP President, Dr. Perfecto Alibin and thousands of fans.

Davao Watersheds Home to Half the Philippines' Bird Species

I was really happy to learn about it because of an article in MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR several days ago.

Imagine, 70 percent of the Philippine inventory of endemic bird species have been confirmed to be living in the Mount Talomo-Pangigan area. Results rom a recent study conducted by the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. (PEF) revealed that the watershed is home to at least 124 bird species as studied in a series of field surveys conducted from 1997-2012.

The Philippines has currently 169 endemic bird species on record., 45 of which are only found in Mindanao. According to the report, 66 of the 124 species which were covered by the research study are Philippine endemic, while 24 of them are Mindanao endemic. This led the study authors to conclude that the watersheds hold an "impressive" percentage of local avian fauna.

Interface Development Interventions, Inc. Executive Director Ann Fuentes said that this significant find underscored the importance of Davao's watersheds in protecting and sustaining a rich biodiversity of organism that can only be found in the Mindanao region.

Other than the Philippine Eagle, the report also identified that the Tarictic of Mindanao hornbill, Penelopides panini, is the second most threatened bird in the watersheds due to illegal pet trade and because it also being hunted for food. Dwindling forest cover has contributed much to the decline of the local populations.

The Talomo-Panigan watershed areas along with the adjacent Lipadas, are the sites of aquifers which provide the current and future supply for Dabawenyos.

In 2010, the department of Tourism has announced that bird watching tours are becoming an emerging option in Philippine tourism. As a biodiversity hotspot, the Philippines has over 600 bird species with a high concentration of bird species per kilometer.

Davao Celebrity Bangs Garcia Back Home

Yes, it was great to see Bangs back in Davao! It was during the "Beauty Fair 2012" last Sunday in Gaisano Mall here in Davao City.

Bang started already as teen star and became famous through ABS-CBN's afternoon "OFW-serye" "Kung Ako'y Iiwan Mo" together with Jake Cuenca and Shaina Magdayao. Bangs was already a local ABS-CBN talent in Davao City and one of those hopefuls in local talent searches.

Many important chapters in her career followed: As Cindy Kurleto's best friend in the Vic Sotto "Da De Di Do Du" - as to mention one.

Good luck for your future, Bangs Garcia!

Race to Save the Philippine Eagle

Re-post of MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR Editorial from Wednesday, September 26, 2012 with friendly permission of publisher Marietta Singco).(

The Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) continues to dwindle in number despite the valiant effort of some stakeholders, chief of which is the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF). According to the International Union for Consideration of Nature (IUCN), the Eagle qualifies as a Critically Endangered Species because it has "an extremely small population ... owing to extensive deforestation." Decades of unmitigated deforestation to fill the need of a growing human population have rendered the Eagles' habitat unviable, and now they number only between 180 and 500 adult individuals.

"Forest destruction and fragmentation, through commercial timber extraction and shifting cultivation, is the principal long-term threat, "the IUCN says. "Old-growth forest continues to be lost within the eagle's range. Moreover, most remaining lowland forest is leased to logging concessions. Mining applications pose an additional threat." Human activities, especially in Mindanao where the Eagles used to thrive, are driving the national bird to extinction.

MEN DON'T CRY?

This is a re-post of my column IN MY OPINION from September 7, 2012 in MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR with friendly permission of my publisher Miss Marietta Siongco.

Since I was a little boy, my whole family and our neighbors liked to hammer into my mind and heart the slogan:"Boys (men) don't cry!" Many incidents happened in my life as a young boy. Later too. Up to now - after reaching the second half of my life. Incidents with oppressed and held back tears and emotions... .

I made a complete fool, when, when I tried to satisfy my inquotable thirst and insatiable hunger as a young boy by penetrating the closed kitchen of our neighbour. A terrible good hiding followed together with the comment: "Don't cry or you'll never become a real man!" Bursting into tears (BAHALA NA - SO WHAT!), I didn't understand, why a boy should bear the pain of trashing but knowing during the same time that he might never become a real man! What an untenbale mug's game!

I never became a whipping boy or fan of brawl and fight because I always tried  to search for ways, not to cry. "You'll never become a real man, because a real man knows how to fight without bursting into tears." Longing I did watch the girls in our neighborhood, who always had been allowed to cry because of any non-important thing or trifling matter.

My thirst of knowledge let me start travelling around the world (and, also to the Philippines!), when I became 18. I learned that this silly custom seemed to exist more or less world-wide. In different Asian countries I learned the nonsense (sorry!) parents explaining their sons, "If you'll not stop crying, you might become a gay!"

Step by step I experienced myself many examples, incidents or reasons when I didn't care any more fortunately about my tears and emotions. A special place with a good or bad remembrance can make me cry. Salt dissolves in water like emotions in tears:  an unjustified treatment, arrogance and ignorance from people around me, a heartfelt condolence, a rejected or non-returned love or friendship, a very special song, a very touching situation or speech, being choked with emotions - but ALSO crying because of happiness or never expected gratitude... .

Are all these privileges only allowed for females? Are males only robots with hearts of stone? Objection my dear fellow creatures!

When I stayed in Israel long time ago: An Israelian solder lost his his right arm during a (nonsensical!) battle at the Golan Heights - and, this wounded soldier started crying! Of course, why not? After my stay in Japan (YMCA family exchange), the other of one of my families in Kyoto couldn't hold his tears, when time came to say "Sayonara". Sure, why not? In South Africa I became a sudden witness of a burial, because an original inhabitant family lost a child because of starving to death. The mother cried much.

Allow me to cry what ever the reason might be. Even, if it is because I help cutting onions and garlic for lunch... .

NAIA Janitor Returns 634.807 Philippine Pesos

It hasn't been the first honest person on the International Airport in Manila. A janitor has returned a bag containing assorted documents and 634.807 Pesos in cash he found at the terminal 2 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport late Monday afternoon.

Marie Cherrie Lyn Cruz, of the NAIA T2 Lost and Found Section, reported that Janitor Ronald Gadayan first noticed the black bag unattended at the Gate 1 of the pre-departure area around 3:30 pm.

After 30 minute, the janitor still found the black bag prompting him to retriee it and inform authorities who consequently turned it over to the lost and found section.

At around 4 pm, a certain Manuel Manahan appeared before the office of the lost and found section to inquire if someone had found a black bag owned bis his employer, a passenger of PAL flight PR 849 leaving for Cebu.

Manahan, who claimed he was authorized by his employer identified only as Francis Chua, thanked Gadayan for returning the bag containing also the cash amount.

Cancer and Kidney Transplant in Mindanao

Cancer ranks third as the leading cause of death in the Philippines. It is estimated that for every 1,800 Filipinos, one will develop cancer annually and it is very common among Filipino patients to seek medical advice only when the disease is at advanced or terminal stage.

This topic is also very imported for foreigners/expatriates living in the Philippines.

I was surprised and happy being informed, that it is with this premise that the Davao Regional Hospital took center stage in developing a 200-million Pesos worth NUCLEAR RADIOTHERAPY CENTER that was inaugurated by no less than the Philippine Secretary of Health, Dr. Enrique T. Ona and paved its way as an additional service to the public already on January 8, 2012.

The first and only government hospital in Mindanao with the state-of-the-art digital medical linear accelerator, Davao Regional Hospital's Nuclear & Radiotherapy Center provides the most comprehensive services and affordable treatment for cancer patients not only in the region but in whole Mindanao.

For more detail information on the Radiotherapy Services you might contact:
084 - 4005614 or 0999 - 7622544 or 0933 - 942 6431 or email drh_tagum@yahoo.com.

One more thing: kidney transplant. Absurd

(Re-post of the Editorial of MINDANAO DAILY MIRROR from August 21, 2012 with friendly permission of the Publisher and Editor in Chief Mrs. Marietta Siongco.)

Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto, or at least his chief-of-staff, Hector Villacorta, have unwittingly given the go-signal for everyone in the Philippines to take everything in the internet and using it in any way possible without having to attribute the source - indeed, we can now even claim the words, pictures, music, and other creations of other people as our own without fear of being taken to court. This scenario has come out after Villacorta, in explaining Sotto's apparent plagiarism of blogger Sarah Pope, said Philippine law still regard the Internet as public domain and that no liabilities should be raised when information was taken from this source.

This means Filipino students from now on can copy-paste any work taken from the Internet and use it for their term paper, theme writing, essays, and other school work and not be scolded by their teachers. Online publications can take any article, photograph, art work, music - literally anything - from any online source and publish it without having to pay the artists, or even inform them. And yes, government officials can swipe the research of other people and use them for their own purposes, without having to do their own work and without even having to verify if the research is accurate.

if that scenario sounds absurd to you, that's because it is. In the irst place, it is not true what Villacorta said: we do have the Intellectual Property Code o the Philippines, officially known as Republic Act No. 8293, which holds that copyright is automatically given for creative works. While the Internet is not explicitly mentioned, the fact is that blog posts - or any other material on the Internet - are owned by their creators and as such much not be appropriated without attribution. Any use of the material without proper citation is tantamount to stealing. Everyone knows that - except, apparently, for Sotto and his people.

Philippines and Germany to Sign New Tax Treaty in 2013

The Philippines and Germany are set to sign in 2013 a new tax agreement aimed at increasing German investments in the country.

In a meeting in Berlin last July 20, both countries have concluded the third and final round of negotiations on the revision of the accord, called "Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with respect to Taxes on Income and Capital, at Germany's Federal Ministry of Finance.

All outstanding issues were resolved during the last round of the five days meetings, with both parties agreeing on the adoption of new standards in the adoption in the tax treaty.

The new tax treaty is designed to protect against the risk of double taxation where the same income is taxable in the Philippines and in Germany.

the signing of the new agreement is expected to take place in Germany early 2013. Amid an unresolved airport terminal dispute between Manila and Berlin, Germany remained a strong significant partner of the Philippines  with a total bilateral trade valued US$ 2.9 billion in 2011.

Magicians in Davao

The Asian Magic Association (AMA) was founded last April 28, 2003 In Hong Kong during its 2003 International Magic Convention, by magic societies from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Philippines and Korea. On the 9th convention AMA has chosen to hold it in the Philippines: and, the beautiful city of Davao takes pride as the host city. It was made possible through the efforts of James Infiesto (also one of my Facebook connection), Davao City's Father of Magic and Convention Director.

The convention will be on September 14 to 17, 2012. It is a star-studded affair with Asian celebrities in Magic wherein some will either compete, show-off, and give lectures. Two Star Magic Shows on September 14 and 15, is both a delightful source of amazing magical moments for Davao people to mark their calendars. Fortunately, a power cast lectures promises a vast opportunity to gain insights and techniques for Filipino magicians to hone their talents.

For more details visit http://www.asianmagicdavao.com or call James Infiesto at 0933 663 5401 or 0910 204 1199.

A Glimpse at Davao City's Theater Organizations - Why They Hardly Survive and Thrive

GUEST COLUMN

by Jared Okri

Davao City is undoubtedly a haven of emerging artists. Performing arts groups - whether formed out of friendship or formally established have been sprouting recently. These groups come and go; are able to produce one production or two at most. And, as always, most of these groups and organizations don't see the dawning of another production.

Let's tak about registered theater organizations. A lot of actors are to be considered in giving conclusion to their early demise. Primarily, there is a scare financial backing. Putting up a simple theater production is no easy task. The cost of an average theater production (with hefty performance space rentals and all the technical and manpower requirements) would cost around 80,000.00 Pesos on the average and finding funds for these productions is like pushing a camel through a needle's hole, so to speak.

Another viable reason why it's hard for theater organizations to survive in Davao City is lack of support from the government sector. Speaking from past experiences, a government official would aptly support socio-civic projects than extend generosity to theater play productions. There are few names that can be considered as "patrons of theater plays". Unfortunately, their generosity would be limited to just a single production. After such, they wil bid goodbye to being 'patrons' of the thespians. Hardly do I know of a local performing arts council that nurtures theater organizations. If there's any, please inform me.

Most theater productions, to be able to survive, would rely on sponsorships. Unfortunately, when a local theater organization pitches a proposal for sponsorship, it is easily turned down simply because it's not known or hasn't produced big productions. After this goes back to how can a self-sustaining theater organization produce high-quality productions without financial aid/grant? It is also a sad fact that when national celebrities are brought to the city, almost all of these companies and establishments would go gaga in volunteering to sponsor such events, while our local theater organizations are dying on the side. The harsh reality of discrimination is an almost always on the front when these small local theater organizations are against these big, well-established productions heralding these national celebrities.

Don't these theater productions sell tickets? They do. Unfortunately, the lack of theater play goers to watch and appreciate theater productions is almost always the reason for plummeting ticket sales. Theater productions like plays and musicals are expensive to mount. But prices are kept low allowing public to watch and enjoy these productions, thus affecting the ticket sales revenue. It is also a fact that only a meager percentage of Dabawenyos appreciates theater plays and musicals. It must have come from the fact that art appreciations is not well rooted in our culture. Or shall I say the more dominant performing arts culture flourishing in our city is the ethnic culture, leaving mainstream theater productions as minority.

With all these problems at hand, why are theater organizations pushing it real hard to mount productions? The answer to this question vary from one theater group to another. Some theater companies do it for advocacy while others do it for profit. Voiceworks Theater Company, Inc. (VCTI) - http://www.vtci.weebly.com for one, strives to promote the development of theater and musical theater in Davao City, providing avenue for emerging actors and theater practitioners to hone their craft, with a bigger goal of "inspiring young people to achieve discipline and excellence in life through performing arts. Voiceworks is established not just to teach people how to sing, dance, or act. VCTI envisions to teach everyone to dream, to offer hope, to present opportunities for change, to give direction and lead people to discover their purposes, to encourage a lifestyle of excellence and service, and build a community that is sincerely concerned of the welfare of this country.

Theater organizations like Voiceworks Theater company, Inc. whose aim is for the betterment of the youth and the society needs support in all forms for it to survive and thrive specially during these times of economic crisis. Government and private sectors alike can impact in helping theater organizations to flourish in Davao City. Patrons and matrons can be prime movers in teaching appreciation for theater plays. Classroom activities specifically designed for art appreciation like going to a theater play will help theater productions to flourish.

All these and more can greatly help our city's theater organizations to survive, thrive and continue to produce theater productions that are relevant, shakers, movers and agents of social change. Whether you're a government oficial, a leader of an organization, a business owner or just an overage individual: YOU CAN HELP!

Davao's Exotic Delights

Travelling to Davao is always an exotic experience. The safest city in the country has got its tourists falling in love with its natural wonders and exciting adventures. But that's not the end of it. Even the food here is thrilling! Some may call it weird or unusual, but isn't it that the best part of travelling? To try something that is out of the ordinary so that you can truly say you've experienced the place? And we're not just talking about the exotic Durian fruit.

They've got more!

Ever tasted Carabao meat? Picture your "pochero" or beef stew with Carabao meat in it, and it will spell delicious in Davao. It's considered a delicacy, especially if made by one restaurant called Bulca Chong. The place looks like a house, except there is a big sign of its name with a drawing of a red carabao head. The meat is tender and the soup is mouth-watering. Need more? They'll give you extra bowls of soup for your rice to swim on. they open till late night, and it's where most people go to after a long night of partying.
One of the after-sought places to eat in Davao is the Goat's eye at Matina Town Square. No, there is no food here that has the goat's eye, but Davaoenos claim this is where the best Dinakdakan can be eaten.Made of pork ears, cheeks, and brain, plus a dish of citrus flavor and some onions, the unique dish will surely give your taste buds a kick, Nothing goes to waste in Philippine cooking. Every part is used up and every bit tastes just as good.

Did you know that crocodile meat is low in fat and calories, and high in protein? Riverwalk Grill has got an "exotic menu" with various ways of eating crocodile meat. They have got crocodile cooked as a steak, sislig, roasted ribs, caldereta, and kare-kare. They also serve ostrich meat and even an ostrich-egg omelet! Now how lare can that oelet be?

Just recently, Philip Dizon, owner of the Davao Crocodile farm has ventured into something more exotic. He has made his very own Crocodile Lechon. Now, before animal conservationists give a big no-no to this, the crocodiles used for eating are those that are bread in his farm, and are not endangered. He has already perfected his recipe, and people who tasted it have been clamoring for more. Definitely a must-try, and definitely Filipino.

On your next trip to Davao, go ahead and explore. Fill your eyes with the sights of Davao, nourish your mind with the culture and lives of the people, absorb the friendliness of  the Davaoenos, and give your stomach a unique gastronomic kick! Eating is indeed more fun in the Philippines!

Philippine National Artist Fernando Poe, Jr.

President Aquino has finally approved and signed Proclamation 435 affirming a previous proclamation of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declaring the late movie icon Fernando Poe Jr. a National Artist, posthumously.

Poe, Ronald Allan Poe in real life, was officially defeated by Arroyo in the May 2004 presidential elections. He died in December of the same year.

His family didn't attend the formal conferment of the award in May 20096. His wife, veteran Susan Roces, accused Arroyo of rigging the votes in her favor.

The National Artist Award is the most fitting recognition in the Philippines.

Who will be the next? DOLPHY?

Davao City International Airport's Anti-trafficking Desk

An anti-trafficking in persons desk was finally opened last July 20, 2012 at the Davao International Airport. The desk is initiated by the Regional Inter-Agency Council against Trafficking-Integrated Action Network.

According to Regional State Prosecutor Antonio Arrellano, concurrent Regional Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking chair, the establishment o an airport desk is an urgency with Davao City becoming more accessible to air travel being the primary entry and exit point in the region.

The desk will be manned by the Airport Security Group, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines and the regional Public Safety Battalion. It is aimed as mechanism of integration and coordination between all member agencies.

By June 2012 the network has rescued and intercepted 111 trafficking victims. About 94 victims were rescued in Davao City.

The launching ceremony was graced by the presence of City Mayor Sara Duterte who expressed full support to the initiatives. She also expressed the possibility of opening a similar anti-trafficking person's desk in the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal.

Survival of Philippine Eagles

While it is crucial to seek more donors to save the Philippine eagle from extinction, the Philippine Eagle foundation admitted that it is utterly careful in accepting funds for the survival of the country's national bird.
At the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos district near Davao City (where, by the way, one of my nieces is working as a volunteer!), 12 of the 36 Philippine eagles in captivity are still up for adoption.

Dennis Salvador, Philippine Eagle Foundation executive director, told Mindanews, that there are companies that are insistent to support the foundation. But, Salvador clariied that the foundation has a policy in screening their partners, especially if the company is involve in resource extraction.

By the way, former Philippine president Fidel Ramos officially declared the Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) as the national bird in 1995.

Meanwhile, real estate developer Avida and entered into a three-years-sponsorship with the foundation and donated 125,000 Pesos to the foundation  for a 12-years-old eagle now known as "Avida".

Why is The Filipino Special?

Writer's note: This is an article written by former Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr., which has been re-posted several times in the past, and several days ago in Mindanao Daily Mirror, where fellow columnist Juan L. Mercado commented: "YOU MAY FIND MUCH TO AGREE WITH IT - OR DISAGREE. ANYWAY READ ON...". I would say the same. As an expatriate, living in the Philippines since 1999 for good, I found Magsaysay's article very interesting... .

Filipinos are brown. Our color should not be a reason for an inferiority complex. (Some) pine for a fair complexion, white people tan themselves - approximate the Filipino complexion.

Filipinos are a touching people. We create human chains with our perennial AKBAY (putting an arm around another's shoulder, HAWAK (hold), KALABIT (touching with the tip of a finger). We seek inter connections.

Filipinos are linguists. It is not uncommon for Filipinos to speak at least three: his own dialect, Filipino and English. A lot speak an added language, Chinese, Spanish, or, if he works abroad, thelanguage of his host country.

Filipinos are "groupists". We surround ourselves with people and hover over them. An average Filipino would have and know at least 300 relatives, notes Dr. Patricia Licuanan of Ateneo and Miriam College.

At work, we live BAYANIHAN (mutual help). We want a KALARA (playmate) more than LARUAN (toy). At socials, even guests bring in other guests. When the is no more space in the vehicle, we KALONG KALONG (sit on anoher!). No one suggests splitting.

Filipinos are weavers. Look at our baskets, mats and other crafts. This art is metaphor. We are social weavers. We weave their into ours that we all become parts of another. Thus, we put preium  on PAKIKISAMA (getting along) and PAKIKIPAGKAPWA (relating). WALANG PAKIKI-PAGKAPWA (inability to relate) is one of the worst labels.

We harmonize with people and include them in our "tribe", our "family". We seek to be included. Thus, we call our friend's mother NANAY. We ca a friend's sister ATE (eldest sister), and so on. We even call strangers TIA/TITA (aunt) or TIO/TITO (uncle).

We have the "KA" - institution - loosely translated as "equal to the same kind" as in KASAMA (of the same company), KAISA (of the same cause), KAPANALIG (of the same believe), etc. In our social fiber, we treat other people as co-equals.

Filipinos are adventurers. We have a tradition of separation. Our legends speak of heroes and heroines who almost always get separated from loved ones, and move to far-away lands. There, they find wealth and power.

Our Spanish colonial history is filled with separations caused by the reduccion (hamleting), and forced migration to build towns, churches and galleons. American occupation enlarged the space of Filipino wandering, including America. There is documented evidence of Filipino presence in America as far as back as 1587.

Now, Filipinos composed the world's largest population of overseas workers. Today's citizens of the world bring BAGOONG (salty shrimps paste), PANSIT (sauteed noodles), SIOPAO (meat-filled dough), including the TABO (ladle) and TSINELAS  (slippers).

Filipinos recreate their home, or feel at home anywhere. Filipinos have PAKIRAMDAM (deep feeling/discernment). We know how to feel what others feel. Being MANHID (dense) is slur. In our PAKIKI-PAGKAPWA (relating), we get not only to wear another man's shoe but also his heart.

Filipinos are very spiritual. We transcend the physical world. We have a sense of KABA (hunch). A Filipino wife instinctively feels her husband or child is going astray, whether or not tell-tale signs present themselves. Filipinos spiritually makes him invoke divine intervention. Rightly or wrongly, Filipinos are always acknowledging, invoking or driving away spirits into and from their life.

Filipinos are timeless. For nearly half-a-millennium now, the Western clock encroached into our lives. Except for official functions, Filipinos will still measure the time with feeling. Our time is diffused, not framed.

Appointments are defined by UMAGA (morning), TANGHALI (noon), HAPON (afternoon), or GABI (evening). Our most exact time reference is probably KATANGHALIANG-TAPAT (high noon), which allows many minutes of leeway. There is really no defenite time. A Filipino event has no clear-cut beginning nor ending. We have a fiesta, but there is VISPERAS (evening), a day after the fiesta is still considered a good time to visit. The Filipino Christmas is not confined on December 25, it somehow begins months before December and extends up to beyond the first days of January.

Filipinos are spaceless. The Filipino concept of space is not expressed in kilometers but with feelings. We say MALAYO (far) or MALAPIT (near). Indigenous culture did not divide land into private lots but kept it open for all to partake of its abundance.

One's party may expropriate the street! So do SARI SARI - stores! Provincial folks dry PALAYAN (rice grain) on the high ways. Religious groups matter-of-factly commandeer streets for processions and parades. "Filipinos eat, sleep, chat, socialize, quarrel, even urinate ANYWHERE!

So what makes the Filipino special? Brown, spiritual, timeless, spaceless, linguists, groupists, weavers, adventures? Filipinos should contribute their traits to the world-wide-community of men. But first, they should know, like and love themselves...!
