Choosing To Believe

Choosing to Believe

Like Many Things in Life, Hope too is a Choice

By MIKE MEDLIN, Manila

Just weeks after two bombings in Davao City and intense fighting in western Mindanao, 104.3 The Edge is challenging the community to take hope.  Starting Tuesday morning the air team will encourage believers in Davao to accept that the hope they want and desperately need for their city begins with them.

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.-II Chronicles 7:14
Hope & healing is our prayer for Davao and the nation.  Consider the recent headlines...
  • Hundreds of Millions of Pesos Stolen in Political Pork Barrel
  • HIV Infection Spread for Asia is the Fastest in the Philippines
  • Youngest Confirmed Prostitute in Davao City Age 9
In times like these, hope and belief are in short supply and that's why the positive message of the Edge Davao is so critical.
Tomorrow morning, I'll be flying out for the week to join the team in Davao for their next fundraiser.  As a listener supported station, the Edge Davao is blazing a new trail for Christian media ministry in the Philippines.  Raising funds in a developing nation is challenging and a real leap of faith for everyone who sits behind the microphone.  Please join me in prayer for this station.

The financial goal set by the station leadership is a humble P72,000.  That's less than $2000 USD and yet enough to cover for the station's lease for an entire year.  If God moves your heart, it would be a real encouragement to the team if their American brothers and sisters would join them in "Fueling Hope for Davao City."  If you'd like to make a special one time donation to their cause please click the link below.

We've set up a special PayPal account for this cause.   Click here to give to Edge Davao.  (The account is set up in Philippines Pesos which are currently exchanging at P43=$1.)

One of my favourite doings as expatriate

I have a lot of favourite things I really enjoy doing as an expatriate living in the Philippines for good: writing, teaching, travelling - and hosting radio shows, i.e. on The Edge Radio Davao 104.3 FM: Sundays from 9 to 11 am and 7 to 9 pm (Philippine Standard Time).

Live on air with United Christian Broadcasters Philippines General Manager Mike Medlin...

Through the Airwaves

irirRe-published from Mindanao Daily Mirror

The Edge Radio Davao 104.3 FM celebrated its 7th anniversary and fund raising part last Januar 18, 2013 with several invited guests and prayer partners. The seven years of service to the community as an agent of encourgament and blessing has been only been airing music and inspirational thoughts that enriches the spirit and soul.

What makes the station so unique from the rest is that it operates solely on volunteers who dedicated their time and talents to run operations from the station manager down to the the DJ's (Disciples of Jesus) and even the program coordinators. These volunteers call themselves "Media Missionaries", who are all serving the same purpose that is to bless and serve the City of Davao and its surroundings with the positive music and powerful messages through the radio ariwaves.

Christian music, that covers all genres from contemporary, rock and metal, reggae, house, dance, jazz and even classical music from the last centuries - just to name a few.

God has enabled the station to endure challenges and victories in the last seven years and the volunteers of this Christian station are hoping to continue with its operation until the following years come.

"We hope to continue to do just that. If there's one thing our city needs, it is a choice between good and bad music. With lyrics that do not gratify negativity, but rather it encourages and influences the minds of the youth," station manager and very good friend Jay Bringas said.

Bringas believes that the young generation of today deserves to have a choice of having that kind of music they wanted to listen to, and encourage the whole community of Davao City to embrace and adopt the station and be part of the call as "Guardians of the Airwaves".

The station manager said listeners can expect better music and programs in 2013. Also, the Edge Radio Davao is the only one in this genre.

Music and Religion

Music and religion belong together like fish and the ocean, light and life, the voice and the ear. In the entire universe, we humans are probably the only beings capable of creating and hearing music. The ability to hear is one of the specific gifts that our Creator gave us. Our fragile planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gases only a few kilometers high. Only this atmosphere is the reason why sound waves can spread through the air. Everything behind this atmosphere is ruled by the sheer endless vacuum of outer space, where galaxies and stars explode and implode in impenetrable silence.

According to the biblical narrative, the world began when God broke through his deadly quiet: "And God said: Let there be light!" (Genesis 1:1). God spoke - and light and life resulted from His audible voice. Because life was created by the word. That is why it is in the nature of every person to listen. Like a parabolic mirror, our souls are created to listen to the eternal space of the hereafter, to try and sense whether a word, a sound  or a voice is trying to reach us from there, in order to fill us with meaning.

I love music. I can't live without it. From time to time I have to express myself regarding to this topic. And, I know, Filipinos love big tunes with great words and beautiful melodies, especially when it comes to classical music.

I am hosting radio shows with classical music in the Philippines since many years. Presently, I am blessed and honoured having such show on "The Edge Radio Davao - 104.3 FM. If your time allows it, please tune in: Sundays from 2 to 4 pm... .

The Abel Family - Die Abel Familie

The German Abel family belongs to one of the first classical music forerunners and paved the way for innumerable and - let me subscribe it - as "indirect foundations laying".

CLAMOR HEINRICH ABEL, was born in the German county Westphalia (which is, by the way, also this writer's home!) around 1640.

Clamor Heinrich Abel became a chamber musician in 1665 and published his edition of sonatas during the period 1674-1677. Notes estates are available until nowadays.

CHRISTIAN FERDINAND ABEL, his son, became a cellist under Johann Sebastian Bach during the years 1715-1737. From him Bach composed i.e. the popular "Viola da Gamba". Bach was also the NINONG (godfather) of his third child. Christian Ferdinand Abel's two sons entered his foot-steps.

LEOPOLD AUGUST ABEL (born March 24, 1718, passed away August 25, 1794), scholar of Francois Benda (1709-17860 became Royal Conductor at the Ludwigslust Castle.

CARL FRIEDRICH ABEL (born December 22, 1723 and passed away June 20, 1787 in London), also student of Bach, remained as "last gambist" (Viola da gamba, a 'on the knees put and played violin). Since 1765 Carl Friedrich Abel arranged and organized concert performances with Johann Christian Bach. Unfortunately happened this without success and Carl-Friedrich Abel became a saucy drinker. One of his symphonies has been ascribed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "KV 18" in e-flat major, but i wasn't Mozart's "18th" composition.

Being a Radio Host in The Edge Radio Davao 104.3 FM?

I have been a radio host in the Philippines from time to time since 1999, when I decided to stay in this wonderful country for good. Being on air has been just for fun. I wasn't thinking about earning a lot of money. I was happy being able sharing music from my private library with people tuning in the stations or following us via live stream.

Since some weeks I got the chance to be back on air. It wasn't just the music i am able sharing with my listeners. I got the chance again (since 2001, while leaving DXGN 89.9 FM The Good News Radio, a member of CMN - Catholic Media Networks) sharing wonderful classical music and some inspirational thoughts, direct from the bottom of my heart.

Now I am back on air. It's 104.3 FM "The Edge Radio Davao", also via live stream www.davao.theedge.ph.

This radio station belongs to UCB Media Philippines. It is a non-stock, non-profit cooperation that raises up and operates a network of independcent FM radio stations play positive and contemporary Christian music.

The goal is to put up a network of media centers and contemporary Christian radio stations all over the Philippines. Right now, the media center is in Makati City and there are more FM stations in Lucena, Agusan del Sur, Kidapawan, South Cotabato and Pagsanjan. They are getting to rock Dumaguete and Laoag as well.
UCB Media is going around the nation and bring the latest and the best from  urban extreme games and local contemporary Christian music.

(With my station manager Liza Faye...)

I am honoured  and blessed being part of it.
