Kinofest 2023 to screen latest German films in SEA, Pacific Region

Goethe-Institut is organizing the second edition of the annual German film festival, KinoFest, scheduled to run throughout September to November 2023.

After an online debut last year, KinoFest 2023 is returning in an offline format, taking place in various cities across Southeast Asia and the Pacific region. It will be held in cities in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam.

KinoFest is a joint production involving eight Goethe-Instituts in Southeast Asia, showcasing the latest films released from 2021 to 2023.

"This year, KinoFest features a diverse selection of German films, including dramas, documentaries, comedies, fiction, and thrillers. These films touch on important themes such as interconnections, immigrations, and entanglements," said Ingo Schöningh, regional head of cultural programs at Goethe-Institut Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Gugi Gumilang, the curator of KinoFest 2023 added, "The curation of KinoFest departs from the idea to show that German cinema is a rich and diverse tapestry of influences and voices that reflect the country's complex history and its evolving cultural landscape."

In Manila, the KinoFest kicks off on October 19 at 6 p.m. at Gateway Cineplex Cinema 6 with the 2023 release "Sun and Concrete" (Sonne und Beton). The second screening of the film on October 22 at 3 p.m. will be followed by a Q&A session with the director, David Wnendt, and the author of the book on which the film is based, Felix Lobrecht.

The screenings of other films will follow from October 20 to 22 at the Gateway Cineplex 10 Cinemas 6 and 7. A total of seven new German films will be screened along with four experimental films from Germany and the Philippines by Khavn Dela Cruz.

Tickets to the KinoFest 2023 are priced at P200 for all films with regular discounts applicable for students, senior citizens, and PWDs. The opening night on October 19 is free and open to all on a first-come-first-served basis while tickets for the rest of the Manila screenings may be purchased at the cinema counters of Gateway Cineplex 10, via the Gateway Cineplex 10 website, or via the Araneta City App.

The KinoFest in Manila is made possible through the support of the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

German Film Week October 20-24 in Davao City

 BY

A carefully selected lineup of contemporary German Cinema, many of which are already receiving numerous awards in international film festivals, highlighted the 2017 German Film Week beginning September 27 at the SM Supermalls.
Organized by the Goethe-Institut Philippinen in partnership with SM Retail, SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc., SM Cinema and with support of Film Development Council of the Philippines, the German Film Week offered a diverse selection of films for audiences, with the goal of promoting German language and Culture.
“We are truly excited to unveil this year’s film and new voices to Philippine audiences,” said Goethe-Institut Philippinen Director and Head of Cultural Programs Dr. Ulrich Nowak. “Whether mainstream, romantic comedies, or micro-budget indies, we made sure our festival attendees will be entertained and pleased.”
The German Film Week opening night recently took place at the SM Mall of Asia Cinema 4 with German filmmaker Markus Goller as its special guest.  Goller, who is the director of My Brother Simple/Simpel, which opens this year’s festivities, had a Q and A session after the film’s screening.  The succeeding film screenings ran from September 28 to October 5 at cinemas at the SM Mall of Asia and SM City North EDSA for Metro Manila.
Aside from the Manila leg, the German Film Week will move on to other Philippine locations: at SM City Clark from October 8 to 12; SM City Cebu from October 14 to 18; and SM City Davao from October 20-24.
The festival will screen 12 films that tackles issues of family, romance, journey, society, terrorism, German history and more.
The opening film My Brother Simple/Simpel directed by Markus Goller, a film based on French bestseller about two brothers – one mentally handicapped – who try to find their long-lost father. Other family related films include Toni Erdmann directed by Maren Ade follows the story of Winfried and his career woman daughter Ines; and Daniel Levy’s The World of Wunderlichs about a single mother accompanied by her family on her casting journey.
There are also films about modern romance. Karoline Herfurth’s You’ve Got a Message/SMS für Dich is about love in the digital age; while The Bloom of Yesterday/Die Blumen von gestern by Director Chris Kraus is a love story set in the world of academic discipline. Return to Montauk directed by Volker Schlöndorff relives a great but failed love affair.
The German Film Week also brings us to the world of punk rocker Fussel as he struggles between therapy and real life in Happy Burnout; and Marija, a young woman who fights to live a freer, self-determined life. On the other hand, Mark Rothemond’s My Blind Date with Life, on the other hand shows how Saliya Kahawatte loses his  eyesight, yet succeeds in his career.
There are also films that we can say are ripped from the world headlines. Robert Thalheim’s Old Agent Men/Kundschafter des Friedens is about how Jochen Falk and two further former Stasi agents embark on a dangerous mission to rescue the kidnapped president of Katschekistan; while Welcome to Germany/ Willkommen bei den Hartmanns tells the story of Diallo, a Nigerian asylum seeker who is taken in by a family in a posh district of Munich.
German Film Week also presents the screening of Captive directed by acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Brillante Mendoza. Captive will be screened during the week-long festival in SM Mall of Asia and SM City North EDSA. Captive was screened in competition during the prestigious 62nd Berlin International Film festival, the prestigious Berlinale.  This will be followed by a film appreciation video.
“The Brillante Mendoza screening is an addition to this year’s program,” said Dr. Nowak. “Our goal at the institute has always been to promote cultural exchange between Germany and the countries we support. And this is one way to achieve that goal—to share German features and highlight Filipino creativity.”
Tickets to the 2017 German Film Week are priced at P100 for all German films and P200 for Director Brillante Mendoza’s film. The opening screening on September 27 was free and open to all on a first-come-first-served basis.
Tickets may be purchased at the cinema counters of participating SM malls. The German Film Week is made possible through the partnership with SM Retail, SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc. and SM Cinema with the support of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. Goethe Institute Turns 50 - Goethe Institut wird 50! (Part II)

The Goethe-Institut Manila 50th Anniversary celebration meant everything: meet people, meet good old friends - but the most important thing: learn more about Philippine-German relations. Goethe and Rizal, and much more.

The round table discussion on the roles of international institutions and art communities moderated by Jay Cruz was very interesting indeed. The part "Music of Rizal" after the opening speeches of the German Ambassador and the director of the Goethe Institut was really touching. Sometime later followed documentary film screenings such as "As told By Butterflies" by Nawruz Paguidopon, or "Entablado" by EJ Mijares.

Another unique part was the presentation of commemorative stamps. I would like to thank the Director of the Goethe-Institut in the Philippines, Mr. Richard Kuenzel for his friendly and immediate permission to publish some parts of his second speech:

"Please allow me to touch a very precious chapter of this year's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in the Philippines. As you all know, this is also the year of the 150th anniversary of the National Hero of the Philippines, Dr. Jose Rizal. The Postmaster of our host country as well as the National Historic Commission encouraged us to have a commemorative stamp printed which underlines the very special relationship between Dr. Rizal and Germany. Not only studied dr. Rizal in Heidelberg ophtalmology and has his most important work "Noli me tangere" printed 1887 in Berlin. Not only was the last remaining copy of the film "Noli me tangere' (1961, Gerardo de Leon) restored 1996 in the Federal Film Archive in Koblenz/Germany and was passed to the late President Cory Aquino, and not only put in the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe-Institut all efforts into restoring the two manuscripts "Noli me tangere" and "El Filibusterismo" - resting in the national Library - by experts and trainers from Germany, but beyond these facts Dr. Rizal did open his heart to very important facets of life in Germany at the end of the 19th century, and by doing so established the actual first substantial cultural relations between our two countries.

...

To conclude the presentation of the stamps commemorating the very tender personal relationship to germany, in which Rizal compared the feeling of exotism with a friend, I should like to draw your extension on Rizal's last poem which he wrote in the night before his execution. Hidden in a kerosine lamp, he gave the paper to his sister Trinidad, the last person to visit him in the cell. "There is something in it," he whispered. - MI ULTIMO ADIOS was soon after translated into German by Pastor Karl Ullmer in 1897. "Last farewell" - "Letztes Lebewohl"."

Goethe Institute Turns 50 - Goethe Institut wird 50!

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Philippines, der Botschafter der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf den Philippinen, Mr. Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch (links) and the Director of the Goethe-Institut, the German Cultural Center in the Philippines, der Direktor des Goethe-Instituts auf den Philippinen, Mr. Richard Kuenzel.

Good friend of mine Mr. Helmut Frielinghaus, German Language Consultant, Goethe Institut Manila and his beautiful wife.
Herr Helmut Frielinghaus und seine huebsche Gattin.

It has been indeed an outstanding and touching 50th Anniversary celebration last March 7, 2011 in Makati City with a lot of special guests, i.e. the German Ambassador Mr. Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch, the Ambassador of Austria, Mr. Wilhelm Donko, the Ambassador of Greece, Mrs. Xenia Stefanidou, the Ambassador of Italy, Mr. Luca Fornari, and the Ambassador of Switzerland, Mr. Ivo Sieber. Among many other VIP's one could also meet the Philippine Postmaster general Atty. Antonio de Guzman. the Honorable Adolfo Ascuno, Chancellor of the Philippine Judicial Academy of the Supreme Court as well as Dr. Raul Sunico, President of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Allow me to quote H.E. the German Ambassador in the Philippines, who said:

"Today we do not celebrate the German patron/poet who would turn 262 years. We celebrate 50 years of Goethe Institute/House in Manila, a German sponsored but home-grown institution. A true spiritual-cultural joint venture.

As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe out it: "The best education for a clever person is found in travel!"

The mother tongue of Goethe and Einstein and the present pope offers a gateway to German/European higher education. A qualification that opens the door for better jobs and salaries.

Goethe and Rizal tried to blend their works with their foreign experiences. Businessmen, politicians and diplomats usually concentrate on what is doable. The better ones try to translate visions into reality."

Foreign Language Education in The Philippines (III)

Foreign language teaching in the Philippines - so far so good! The demand in high-schools and university teachers is indeed big.

During my last stay in Manila I learned that the Department of Education, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Manila, has launched a program that introduces German as foreign language to High Schools in the Philippines (Pilot). In order for this program, proven to be a success since its formation, to establish itself further and to meet the demand for teachers, Goethe Insitut is offering 16 teacher scholarships for Philippine universities in 2011.

Participation in this scholarship program will enable universities to incorporate the study of German into their curriculum as well as be part of the German network. The scholarships will occupy a period of six months of German teacher training (April - October 2011)  at the Goethe Institut Philippinen in Manila.

Of course, applications are only viable through the universities and departments that focus on the establishment of German as a foreign language in their schools. Private applications will not be accepted. in addition to this, applicants must be already employed by the university at the time of application and have a long-term contract with the school.

Foreign language education in the Philippines - in this case the German language - and such scholarships of the Goethe Institut Manila - another big step into the future.

Understanding each other is good. Gut, wenn wir uns verstehen.

Foreign Language Education in The Philippines

As faculty member (German Language, Institute of Languages) I do enjoy teaching at the University of Southeastern Philippines, Davao City, starting almost three years ago. Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Goetheinstitut in Manila, USEP became one of its partner schools:

http://www.goethe.de/ins/ph/map/net/ska/enindex.htm

I'll be attending the collaborative conference  on "Sustainable Development of Foreign Language Education in the Philippines (Secondary and Tertiary Levels)" in Manila, organized by the Alliance Francaise de Manille, Embassy of France, Embassy of Germany, Embassy of Japan, Embassy of Spain, Embassy of Italy, Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes, and the japan Foundation, Manila.

I like to quote Japan Foundation Manila Director Shuji Takatori:

"The said event will showcase the cooperative efforts of various foreign government cultural/language agencies and pertinent institutions in promoting a long-term implementation of the Philippin Government's program in foreign language education, it's significant for foreign organizations to be engaged in a laudable endeavor - the Filipino student's communicative competence in foreign language as well as in depth understanding and appreciation of foreign culture in preparation for a linguistically diverse workplace; thus, the undertaking - "working hand-in-hand / strengthened partnership" with the host country leading to the inclusion of Foreign Language Education in the standard academic curriculum is for the attainment of the Filipino's youth's global competitiveness."

The Department of Education and the CHED will inform about the current situation of the participating languages in the Philippines in High-Schools as well as in universities (e.g.existing language programs, possible teacher trainings, teacher education, evaluation, quality standards, needs, program goals and questions.

I am sure, it will be an exciting time for me while joining this event. I am also sure, that I'll be reporting more details about this topic after being back from Manila.
