Selena Gomez becomes first woman to have 400M Instagram followers

Jan Milo Severo - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — A few weeks after dethroning Kylie Jenner as the most followed female celebrity on Instagram, Selena Gomez became the first woman to have 400 million followers on the platform.

Kylie has 382 million Instagram followers.

Selena, however, is the third celebrity who has the most followers on Instagram. Football stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are on the top with 562 followers and 442 million followers respectively.

In her Instagram account, Selena posted photos with her fans celebrating the accomplishment.

"Wishing I could hug all 400 million of you," she captioned the post.

Selena was the most followed woman in 2019 until Ariana Grande and then Kylie took the title.

Her comeback as the most followed woman on Instagram came in the middle of her retreat from social media.

She recently told Vanity Fair that she only has TikTok app in her phone and tried to put filters to avoid hurtful comments.

“People can call me ugly or stupid and I'm like, 'Whatever',” she said.

“But these people get detailed. They write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety... I couldn't do it anymore. It was a waste of my time,” she added.

Toni Gonzaga-Soriano unfollows Instagram friends

Toni Gonzaga’s Instagram profile as of Feb. 9, 2022

by Stephanie Bernardino, Manila Bulletin

Actress-singer Toni Gonzaga has unfollowed her celebrity friends on Instagram.

As of Feb. 9. Toni is only following 22 accounts on IG, including her husband Paul Soriano, son Severiano Elliott, sister Alex Gonzaga, and mom Pinty Gonzaga. Others are the official accounts of her businesses.

After 16 years, Toni bid goodbye to her reality show “Pinoy Big Brother” hours after she hosted the proclamation rally of presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos and running mate Sara Duterte. The “PBB” management also released its statement.

Prior to Toni’s confirmation, Kapamilya reporter MJ Felipe already broke the news.

MJ wrote on Twitter: “THIS JUST IN: According to a reliable source, Toni Gonzaga will no longer host Pinoy Big Brother. No formal resignation but source said Toni has voluntarily endorsed the main hosting job to Bianca Gonzalez.”

“Pinoy Big Brother,” more popularly known by its abbreviated title “PBB,” is the Philippine version of the “Big Brother” reality game show franchise. The show first aired in 2005 and Toni was among the original hosts alongside Willie Revillame and Mariel Rodriguez.

Some believe Toni’s departure from the show has something to do with her appearance as host of BBM-Sara proclamation rally held at the Philippine Arena, Tuesday. Several ABS-CBN executives have expressed disappointment on Toni.

On the other hand, Toni’s hosting stint UniTeam’s proclamation rally ignited viral memes.

Facebook and Instagram down in the Philippines

... and parts of the world

ABS-CBN News

MANILA (UPDATED) - Facebook and Instagram users in several parts of the world reported that the social-network sites were inaccessible late Wednesday and early morning Thursday.
The California giant, which has more than 2 billion users, acknowledged the outage and is working to fix the problem.
"We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible," a Facebook statement said on Twitter.
A short time later, Facebook indicated the outage was not related to an attack aimed at overwhelming the network.
"We're focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack," Facebook said, referring to what is known as a distributed denial of service cyber strike.
According to the website downdetector.com, outages were heaviest in North America and Europe. Users in the Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan also experienced the glitch.
News site USA Today also reported that some users were experiencing issues on Facebook-owned photo app Instagram.
The hashtags #facebookdown and #instagramdown quickly topped Twitter's trending topics worldwide.
Last November, a Facebook outage was attributed to a server problem and a September 2018 outage was said to be the result of "networking issues." - With a report from Agence France-Presse

PNP warns public on social media posts

By: Romina Cabrera (The Philippine Star)
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday urged the public to be careful with social media posts that may be used by criminals this holiday season.
PNP deputy spokesperson Supt. Kim Molitas said social media users should exercise restraint when posting their whereabouts or their itineraries for the holiday season on the site as this may be used by criminals.

“Netizens should take precautions and be aware of the consequences of anything that they post on social media in real time,” she said.
The PNP did not want to cause alarm, but urged the public to limit the information that they post online and make sure their posts are restricted to family and friends.
The PNP said there has been no increase in petty crimes even with the coming holidays.
“Our efforts did not go to waste because we sustained the campaign against crimes even before the holidays,” Molitas said.
She said it is the first time that there has been no reported increase in the number of petty crimes before the holidays.
Molitas said the PNP hopes to continue this trend even after the holiday.
