Miss Universe 2017 Pageant Takes on New Format

By: , Manila Bulletin

The announcement of the Top 16 semifinalists for the Miss Universe 2017 beauty pageant takes a new twist during the finals in Las Vegas, Nevada on Nov. 26 (Nov. 27 in Manila).
“For the first cut, three candidates from each region will be selected based on scores plus one spot for the girl with the most votes in that region,” said Norman Tinio, of normannorman.com, a popular blog on international and local beauty pageants, during an interview in Parañaque City on Thursday night.

Tinio said: “And then, there will be four remaining Wild Card spots from around the world.”
“So there will be four girls from the Americas, four girls from Europe, four from girls from Asia, Africa and Pacific; and four wild cards. A total of 16 semi-finalists,” said Tinio.
While fan votes will help advance a candidate to the Top 16, unconfirmed reports said that the 92 candidates will choose among themselves a girl who will also join the Top 16 semifinalists.
The worldwide fan voting for the Miss Universe 2017 pageant will end on Nov. 25, one day before the finals.
In high spirits
Rodgil Flores, head of the Kagandahang Flores beauty camp which trained Miss Philippines Rachel Peters, will fly to Las Vegas to catch the Miss Universe pageant on Sunday, Nov. 26. Flores will be accompanied by his cousin Gio Flores.
Also, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and mentor Jonas Gaffud of the Aces and Queens beauty camp have left for Las Vegas for the Miss Universe contest.
“On our way to Las Vegas! Excited for Miss Universe 2017,” said Gaffud as he shared a picture with Wurtzbach at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 in Parañaque City on Thursday.
Wurtzbach has been chosen as one of the telecast judges in this year’s pageant.
Flores said Peters is in high spirits as the pageant date approaches despite the controversy on social media that leaked her reported evening gown for the finals of the Miss Universe contest.
Reacting to the design of the evening gown that leaked, Flores said: “She brought six gowns for the Miss Universe contest. We have already chosen which gown she will wear in the finale.”
He refused to confirm if the evening gown that went viral was for the finale. “Abangan na lang po nila. Ilang araw na lang naman.” (Let’s just wait for the finals).
Peters slammed the uploader of her evening gown on the Internet.
“To whoever leaked pictures of my evening gown, thank you for teaching me a lesson about being more careful who you trust.
“Not sure what your intentions were but no matter what, you’re not dragging me down.
“At the end of the day, it’s not about the dress you wear, how you walk or even the elements of surprise. What’s important is that you are kind and true to yourself… that’s when a girl truly shines!” said Peters.
It has been a tradition for the management of the Bb. Pilipinas beauty contest not to reveal the outfits of their competing delegates to international pageants until the finals night.
Flores said he texted Peters after the preliminary competitions.
“I congratulated her for her wonderful performance. Basta happy s’ya at happy kami kasi andun ‘yung control, very queenly s’ya,” said Flores. (I’m happy and we’re happy (during the preliminaries) because the control is there, she’s very queenly).
Flores said that based on the performance of Peters in the preliminaries, “she deserves a spot in the Top 16.”
Sought to give his final advice to Peters, Flores said: “Just stay focus. This is it! Ang lapit-lapit na! You worked so hard for the past years, eto na yung culminating night.”
Flores also said the Bicolana beauty queen is not the type of person who will back out because of pressure.
“Gagalingan pa n’ya lalo kasi na-inspire s’ya dun sa comments and reviews sa prelims n’ya which is outstanding naman yung performance n’ya. At saka boto lang po kayo for Rachel,” said Flores. (She will do her best in the finals because she was inspired by the positive reviews and comments she got during the preliminaries which is outstanding. Let’s continue to vote for Rachel).

Miss Universe 2017 Candidates Stay Behind to Explore the Philippines

ABS-CBN News

MANILA – Several candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant obviously loved the Philippines that some of them decided to extend their stay in the country.
One week after the coronation, some of the contestants have been hitting the beach and taking to social media to share their awesome pictures.
For instance, Miss Universe US Virgin Islands Carolyn Carter is currently admiring the beauty of Palawan. Aside from visiting the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Carter went on to explore Palawan by heading to El Nido.
Like Carter, Miss Universe Germany Johanna Acs is also in Palawan with her family.
“Today I really felt like I found paradise on earth... Warm heartedly recommending everyone to visit this place once in your life! It was so worth the 6 hours drive from Puerto Princesa,” she wrote on Instagram.
On the other hand, Miss Universe Israel Yam Kaspers Anshel is in Boracay.
Miss Universe New Zealand Tania Dawson, meanwhilee, is exploring the beauty of Cebu.

DESPITE the loss of the country’s bet in the Miss Universe pageant yesterday, many still felt satisfied with the results of the pageant.
“It only shows that Miss Universe now prefer women with substance over the pretty ones,” said Ram Morales, an academic coach who watched the pageant at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) in Pasay City.
He and his friends bought tickets at P5,000 each for an upper box seat at the venue and brought a Philippine flag as they rooted and cheered for Ms. Philippines Maxine Medina, who qualified in the top six choices of the judges.
He said even if Medina did not win the title, her performance was more than enough to make him proud as he had come to accept her Waterloo, her communication skills.
“We all have imperfections, it just so happened that Maxine’s weakness is Q and A,” he told Cebu Daily News.
Medina was the first candidate for the question and answer portion and was asked, “What is the most significant change you’ve seen in the world in the last 10 years?”
Medina answered, “In the last 10 years of being here in the world, I saw all the people bringing in one event like this in Miss Universe. It’s something big to us that we are one. As one nation, we are all together. Thank you. Maraming salamat po.”
A Cebu-based actor, Albert Chan Paran, also watched the event at SM MOA yesterday.
“Watching it live with our kababayan having the same goal, dream and prayer to make our very own Miss Philippines Maxine Medina to win back to back, you can feel the tension, the nerve-cracking feeling and the pressure where you feel restless,” Paran told Cebu Daily News.
Another Medina supporter, Marlon Garcia Wafer, chief executive of Wafer Models, said that he also rooted for Medina for the Miss Universe crown.
“I know Maxine did her best to win the crown. My only regret is that the interpreter was not used for its purpose. She could express her ideas most probably if she spoke our language. I think we should enjoy the privilege of allowing us to answer in our dialect so why not do it to be more comfortable just like the Latina candidates,” he said.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, on the other hand, said he still preferred the Festival Queen over the Ms. Universe pageant.
“You know, I think that is why I like the Festival Queen. There you see beauty, wa’y interview interview. And you see dancing. It’s so nice,” the mayor said.
He said he doesn’t really care about the interview portion of the pageant.
“I don’t care about the speaking. Even here, during our Miss Cebu, they put a lot of weight on the interview. I don’t care so much about the interview because there were some beautiful contestants of Miss Cebu that did not win because they don’t know how to answer well. Natural, sa nerbyos na. (Naturally because of nervousness.),” Osmeña said.
Osmeña said the pageant did not really interest him anymore, saying, “Really, after all, they all really look alike.”
Provincial police director Senior Supt. Eric Noble had his own preference: Ms. Thailand.
But he said Medina’s performance was still something to be proud of.
Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale wasn’t able to watch the pageant because of a meeting.
She said, Medina’s loss was “sad, but anyway, di gyud seguro atong time kay ato baya ang last year (It is sad but maybe it is not our time because we won last year).”
While the pageant was going on, the police got three alerts — two theft alarms, one in Barangay Capitol Site and another in Barangay San Roque, and a report of a Japanese national found dead inside his condo unit in Barangay Apas.

TWELVE of the 86 Miss Universe candidates visited SM Seaside City Cebu at the South Road Properties (SRP) on Tuesday afternoon.
These were delegates from Argentina, the Bahamas, Czech Republic, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Namibia, Romania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, and Venezuela.
The pageant beauties were welcomed by global casual apparel brand, Uniqlo, at their store located on the mall’s upper ground floor.
They arrived at 5:15 p.m. and proceeded to change into Uniqlo’s new Spring-Summer collection, which they later on modeled for local press and bloggers.
The candidates appeared in the brand’s latest offering of denim pants, cotton crew neck shirts, and jackets.
Uniqlo chief operations officer Katsumi Kubota gave the welcome remarks.
They did not stay for more than 10 minutes at the store as they also had to visit Forever 21 and Flawless, also at same mall.
At around 6:30 p.m., they headed back to Jpark Island Resort and Waterpark in Lapu-Lapu City where the pageant’s swimsuit presentation was held Tuesday morning.
At the resort, a gala party was held for all of this year’s Miss Universe candidates.
