Philippines' Internet at 19!

When Philippines was connected to the internet on March 19 nineteen yars ago, the Internet was seen as a high-tech thing only computer nerds would understand and enjoy. It was also very expensive - it costs 10,000 US$ a month to lease a 64K line connecting to the united States.

Now an ordinary Filipino can share photos with tons of friends on Facebook, watch videos on You Tube, and get the largest news online for low as 10 Pesos under the Smart Network. Efforts of companies like a Smart Communications, Inc. to bring down the cost of internet use have contributed tremendously to its pervasiveness and dynamism in the country today.

About half of Filipinos already have access to the Internet, with 30 millions of them having a Facebook account and 10 millions present on Twitter. And sure, also me, living as an expat in the Philippines: yes, you can count me in... .

Now, that the Internet is being used to transmit bigger and bigger volumes of information, improving speed is essential. Indeed, the Internet has come a long way from being the turf or nerds and academics to being an indispensable tool in the daily life of Filipinos.

In a report titled "The State of Broadband 2012: Achieving Digital Inclusion for All", the UN agency Broadband Commission for Digital Development said mobile broadband usage accounted for 6.9 percent of the growth in Philippine gross domestic product in the past decade.

SMART's mangroves continue to flourish along the shoreline of Cagsao in Camarines Sur (see photo above).

"We are proud and fulfilled that our environmental initiatives are being recognized as one of the world's best practices when it comes to protecting the environment", said Darwin Flores, SMART Public Affairs' Senior Manager for Community Partnerships.

I strongly agree with you, Sir. Kudos!

PLDT Security Guard in Davao City Returns Lost Money!

His honesty brought him honor. I met him several times, while paying my PLDT-bills.

When Ramil A. Rayos, security guard at PLDT-Smart Payment Center in Davao City returned a lost envelope containing cash to its owner, he was just doing his job. After all, it is indeed part of a guard's duty to return lost things to their rightful owners. Little did he know that he will be praised for his action.

"I commend SG Ramil Rayos for his honesty. He should be emulated by everyone!" said AMMG Head Rene G. Banez.

On July 26, 2010, Rayos found an envelope containing more than 4,000 Pesos on top of a writing ledge at the payment center. Instead of keeping the money for himself as some people would probably do, he waited for the owner to come back for it.

So when Shane Delgado, an employee of the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, went to the payment center looking for an envelope she inadvertently left earlier, Rayos immediately ascertained her ownership of the lost envelope. He notified his detachment commander and the three of them went to the office of Mindanao Asset Protection division Head Wilfredo A. Arcinue where Rayos returned the envelope to Delgado.

A man of humble circumstances, Rayos earns up to 3,500 Pesos every payday as a security guard. Rayos never thought twice about returning the money, saying: "I would rather work and earn my own money than spend somebody else's!"

Kudos to you and God bless!

Kudos to present BI Commissioner Marcelino Libanan and his whole staff.

Do you have a cellphone? SMART or GLOBE?

Anyway, fact is: the cellphone companies' competition is getting more and more  preheated.

Really, it's an other first in prepaid history: the new SMART BUDDY SIM keep no-expiry reserve load. It's indeed like having a secret pocket in your SIM. Wow, imagine: now, addition to regular load and call & text load, SMART BUDDY gives you no-expiry reserve load that stays safe in your sim's RESERVE LOAD wallet until you're ready to use it. Just draw from your RESERVE LOAD and convert it to regular airtime or any call and text offer. Just visit your favorite retail outlet.

When I browse the Internet, I found another interesting article: Phone a friend with GLOBE Tattoo Broadband! I am sure you agree with me: Have you ever had one of those days when you slept through your alarm and woke up sweetly a half-hour later, only to be enveloped by the icy panic that pushes you to rush in a frenzy to start your hectic day grind? You leave the house in record time, waving down a ride, yet with a sinking feeling you've forgotten something. That's when it hits you: your precious mobile phone is sitting comfortably on your nightstand at home. Yipee, this just happened to me last week. I really started smiling while reading this.

In a pinch, GLOBE has the lifesaver for us. All we need to do is whip out our laptops, plug in our new GLOBE Tatoo Broadband stick, and we cal call away, straight from our PC. Yes, I also find a website: surf over to www.globe.com.ph/tattoo.

We are really lucky under the SUN... .

Philippine Long Distance Company and its goals

PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone -Company-) has been my sponsor for six months for my former radio show "Classics at Night"on an FM station in Davao City together with "Deutsche Welle" (the "German International BBC") as a rebroadcasting partner.

Some of my in-laws are still working with and for PLDT.

Please bear with me, if PLDT feels great to be a winner! I am not talking about PLDT's 3rd quarter results, which shows a core net income up to 11% to 31 billion PHP! Allow me, my dear readers, to mention the Quill Awards!

PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone) and SMART received a total of 13 Quill Awards from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), one of the world's most prestigious of business communicators.

The Philippine Quill Awards of Excellence and Merit are conferred to organizations that have the highest level  of thought leadership, strategic management, creativity, resourefulness and succesful solutions.

SMART Communications also bagged eight Quill Awards including three awards for its various communication campaigns and programs for 'Tipid Sulit  Pinas!"
