4 dogs beheaded - P15,000 reward up for info on person responsible

September 06, 2021

POLICE personnel of the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) have launched a manhunt against the person responsible for beheading four puppies in Barangay San Miguel and a P15,000 reward was put up for those who could help identify the perpetrator.

The dogs were found beheaded in a lot in Barangay San Miguel on September 4. It was immediately reported to barangay officials, and it was found out that the beheading happened on September 3.

Initial investigation revealed that the owner of the dogs ordered the puppies to be thrown as they were infested with lice, but the owner denied doing the beheading.

San Miguel Barangay Captain Dionn Phillip Heramil has offered P5,000 and a certain Sir Jimmy offered P10,000 as reward for those who could identify the person responsible for the crime.

“Kung kinsay makatodlo sa pag patay sa 4 ka itoy ug pag potol sa mga ulo niini adunay madawat nga reward worth P5,000 gikan sa atong maabtikon nga kapitan Dionn Phillip Heramil ug P10,000 gikan kay Sir Jimmy, nag total sa kantidad nga P15,000,” said Barangay San Miguel Igacos in a Facebook post.

“Ayaw kamo kabalaka kay magpa bilin confidential ang inyong identity.

Kung aduna kamu impormasyon palihog e contact atong Kapitan Dionn Phillip Heramil – 09071515906,” it added.

Bantay Hayop Davao, meanwhile, condemned the incident and vowed to help in the investigation.

“The viral photos of 4 puppies around 2 to 3 months old that started yesterday was a shocking sight, painful, unacceptable and unforgivable. Karumal-dumal. Isang kawalang respeto at kawalang dangal. Masahol pa sa isang halimaw ang gumawa nito at sa tingin namin ay hindi ito normal. A person capable of doing such a psychopathic act and display it for others to see is a work of a criminal that cannot be simply allowed on the loose,” it said in a Facebook post. (LMY)

Bridges

1982, I visited Davao City for the first time in my life. I learned about the awesome project of a bridge from Davao City to Samal Island. I can't see this bridge till today. But the topic is back in the news.

We are all bridge builders during our whole life. I am not talking about the raised platform on a ship or a bridge mounting for false teeth or, as in the bony part of the nose. I am talking about spiritual bridges establishing connections between us and other people - or, between God and us.

Another elementary example is the "birthday bridge" or the turn to the new year, that takes us from the old into a new period of life. A very important bridge in life takes people to me and me to people. It matters not if our skin is black or white, if we are rich or or poor, man or woman, being sad or happy.

So obvious our daily life is that we might even forget simple things easily. Self-esteem, respect and freedom from anxiety are the necessary and conclusive foundations for this kind of bridge.

Small but important bridges every daily - how easily are they to be built: gestures of love - like a medicine; a handshake together with commendation and praise, encouraging words, a warm smile, instead of a superficial "How are you?" and the expected "Fine" or "OKAY LANG!".

Allow me to say it clearly and direct to the point: Separations result from crumbled or fit for demolition bridges.
Destroyed spiritual bridges can be found at any corner. Look into your neighborhood or, don't drive away and repress this topic in your family. Insignificant trifling matters, minor arguing, misinterpretations, results in silence - and after the destroyed bridge follows an in invincible wall not only between estates but also in the hearts and minds of stubborn human beings.

I was born and grew up together with my parents in a parish house. Up to the time of my active performances - among many other things - I did learn this:

"Build your own bridge to God and never doubt in Him. Always remember His promise. When a rainbow appears, it confirms His proximity and neighborhood and His faith. God's unique bridge, a rainbow, is always there and durable, long lasting and solid. The main bridge, which afford passage to God, is the institution "church".

Summer Adventure Awaits Tourists in Samal Island

DAVAO CITY - The Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte is known for its beautiful beach resorts, the main reason why tourists frequently visit the island.
However, there are other ways that tourists can enjoy Samal this summer.
One is through an extreme water adventure. Visitors can try the giant water slide and water blob at Maxima Aqua Fun Resort in Barangay Peñaplata.
According to Erma Hagnaya, during her firsts attempts, she got scared. But eventually she found them quite funny and enjoyable.
"Scared at first but if you have tried it, it's fun," says Erma.
You can also ride the banana boat, drive a jetski, and of course, go scuba diving. Samal has a rich marine life. There are different varieties of corals, colorful fish and giant clams.
Samal also has a new attraction: Johnny's ride, which is similar to an open cable car.
A 30-foot high and 30-foot long canopy walk is also a must-try. At the finish line, you will have an adrenaline rush because of the super drop!
But if you want to experience nature trip, trek and swim at Hagimit falls. Hagimit actually has nine falls. Tourists keep on coming back because of its clear and cold water, which is perfect for summer.
Your itinerary would not be complete if you will not visit the Monfort Bat sanctuary in Babak, Samal, which is home to more than 2.5 million bats.
In fact, it holds the title of the Guinness World Record of largest colony of Geoffroy's Rousette fruit bats.
Tourist guide Analyn Baldoza says the area used to be a hiding place for Samal residents during the World War 2.
There are about 70 bat caves in Samal. No wonder Samal is considered as the bat cave capital of the Philippines.
Samal Island can be reached through a motorboat or a ferry at the Sta. Ana Wharf or at Km 11 and 12 in Sasa.

Canadian Chamber Head Weighs in on Investors after Samal Kidnapping

DAVAO CITY -- The abduction last September of four people -- two of whom are Canadians -- in the Island Garden City of Samal has affected business prospects in the region and how the case will be resolved will be crucial to investor confidence, the head of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (CanCham) said.

Canadian PM-Elect Justin S. Trudeau -- AFP
“The recent kidnapping has been given fairly wide publicity in Canada and has temporarily affected business,” CanCham President Julian H. Payne said in an interview during a recent visit to the city.

The Government of Canada, on its Web site updated Oct. 27, has warned its nationals to exercise a high degree of caution when traveling to the Philippines and advised against “all travel to the Mindanao Region, excluding urban areas of Davao City.”

The advisory applies to the Davao Region provinces of Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte, which covers Samal.

“Those [Canadians] already doing business in the area would not be affected because while they know there are some risks, the existing businesses know how to cope,” Mr. Payne said.

Among the biggest Canadian companies operating in the Philippines are those in the mining and insurance industries.

But Mr. Payne said those who are still in the prospective stage may have second thoughts and are likely to postpone their plans following the advisory.

“There is a temporary effect but in the long term, it will all depend on how the kidnapping is resolved,” he said.

A video of the kidnap victims uploaded on YouTube last month is still being validated by the Special Investigation Task Group Ocean View.

Supt. Antonio E. Rivera, spokesperson of the Davao Police Regional Office, said they submitted the copy of the video to the Manila headquarters since the local office does not have the equipment for verification.

The 2:22-minute clip, which was posted on YouTube on Oct. 13, showed the two Canadians and the Norwegian manager of the Holiday Oceanview Marina where they were kidnapped, together with a Filipina hostage presumed to be a partner of one of the kidnapped Canadians.

They were surrounded by eight heavily armed men with the recognizable black flag of the terrorist group ISIS behind them.

Canada’s advisory is significant in the context of the Philippines’ hosting the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit this month.

Canadian Prime Minister-Elect Justin Trudeau is among the leaders of APEC’s member-economies scheduled to arrive in Manila for the Nov. 18-19 summit.

Mr. Trudeau, who is due to be sworn in on Wednesday after winning in Canada’s Oct. 19 legislative elections, will also attend UN climate talks in Paris on Nov. 30 where the Philippines is also a participant. -- with reports by AFP

Shallow Gimmick and Samal Island

By friendly permission of Mindanao Daily Mirror, where I am also writing my regular column "In My Opinion", I like to share with you the Editorial from February 18, 2011:

Shallow gimmick
The local government of the island Garden City of Samal has come up with a gimmick ostensibly to entice more tourists, specially foreigners, to visit the island city and enjoy the amenities offered by beach resorts therein. The booklet, shaped and designed like a passport, will be available at the Davao International Airport, overland transport terminals, and malls in Davao City.

At first blush, the "passports" look great as tourism, particularly, beach resort operation, and is the island's main industry. Scheduled for release next month , the booklet contains discount coupons of beach resorts, a list of activities and other tourism information guides. so says Nelson Aquino, officer-in-charge of the IGACOS tourism office. Some 30 beach resorts are operating in the island most of which are located along the coastline facing Davao City.

On closer look, the "passport" is nothing bunch a shallow gimmick and an empty gesture to welcome visitors. The local government's effort to attract more tourists to the island will be more meaningful and significant if it revises, better yet repeal altogether, the controversial revenue ordinance that imposes heavy fees on users of the island's recreational facilities as well as plain visitors.

Anyone who goes to Samal Island even for a short visit is charged with an entrance fee of 5 Pesos. In all likelihood, it is the only place in the world that imposes an entrance fee for visitors. That's only for starters. The so-called environmental user's fees also include: Island hopping or plain sightseeing: 20 Pesos per person per day; strolling at mangrove board walk: 20 Pesos person; mountaineering: 20 Pesos per person; spelunking: 25 Pesos per person; extreme adventure sports: 30 Pesos per person; snorkeling or scuba-diving: 50 Pesos per person; photo documentation: 500 Pesos per day; research: 500 Pesos per group; and video documentation: 1,000 Pesos per day.

Noting the unfriendliness and oppressiveness of the ordinance to beach resort users, resort owners and operators have filed a suit before the Regional Trial Court in Panabo City seeking to declare the new revenue code as unconstitutional. The local government's imposition of exorbitant fees to users of beach resort facilities is one sure way of driving away tourists.
