Sara to Filipinos: Love God, country

15th VICE PRESIDENT Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, takes her oath as vice president during rites in her hometown in Davao City, on Sunday, June 19, 2022. (UPDATED) TAKING her oath as the country's next vice president, Sara Duterte-Carpio on Sunday urged Filipinos to commit themselves to loving "God, family and country." She was sworn in by Supreme Court Associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando at the San Pedro Square in Davao City before a crowd of 5,000 people.

Her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman, held the Bible by which she took her oath while her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, joined them on stage.

In her inaugural address, Duterte-Carpio said she believed that "we should commit to heart the priorities of God, country, and family" as one country united and determined "to overcome our difficulties and achieve our aspirations." She said the voice of the 32.2 million Filipinos that voted for her "was loud and clear — with the message to serve our motherland, and this message has been reiterated in my oath: to consecrate myself to the service of the nation." "There is a God. A God whose will transcends the desires of our hearts, one whose will direct us to the way that we might not have imagined — but a way that consecrates ourselves every day to help our fellowmen overcome the difficulties they face in their lives, to change lives, to save lives," Duterte-Carpio said.

"If we all take a moment to listen to the call to serve and decide to heed the call — in the same way that many are already devoting their lives as hardworking farmers and fisherfolk that ensure there is food on our tables, dedicated health workers who help the sick, brave soldiers who fight for our country, honest and fair entrepreneurs who support our economy, patient school teachers that guide our children — I believe the country will be heading toward a future of hope, security, strength, stability and progress," she said.

Duterte-Carpio called on the people to become patriots and draw inspiration from the life and works of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

"May his memory light up the fire within us to become patriots. Rizal taught us that selflessness and sacrifice could change our country's fate and shape our children's future. The bravery of Rizal completes the fabric of our identity as Filipinos," she said.

"Let us show our love for our country by taking care of our families and communities despite the unending challenges that come our way," she said.

She noted that "a strong, loving, happy family sets down all the basic foundations essential in the development and growth of a child." "Today, our children are facing a very complex future, one that is rife with conflict and uncertainties. Some of these challenges include the winding cycle of poverty, the trauma of broken families, the life-long baggage because of irresponsible and bad parenting, the abandonment issues due to an absentee parent, the anguish of gender confusion and discrimination, the destruction brought about by drugs, the lure of easy money in criminality, cases of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, the failure to identify and speak up against different kinds of abuses, the life-altering effects of teenage pregnancy, the detrimental effects of illiteracy, the emotional injury of bullying, unstable mental wellness, recruitment to support terrorism, misinformation in the internet — and the list could be endless," she said.

Authorities to enforce ‘multi-layered security plan' for Sara's oath-taking on June 19

by Antonio Colina IV

DAVAO CITY – Security forces here will enforce a ‘multi-layered security plan’ for the oath-taking of presumptive Vice President Duterte tentatively set for June 19 at the San Pedro Street in this city.

PMaj. Ma. Teresita P. Gaspan, spokesperson of Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said in an interview over Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR 87.5) on Tuesday that the historic event is expected to draw around 20,000 attendees from different parts of the country.

She said the security cluster will enforce stricter security measures to ensure the safety of the crowd.

She said the venue will be open to the public.

She added that no perimeter fence and pavilion will be mounted at the venue to make it more convenient for the public to witness Duterte’s oath-taking but added that this will make it particularly challenging for authorities to control the crowd.

But Gaspan assured the security forces are ready to secure the venue, with DCPO receiving augmentation from the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Davao to maintain order during the event.

She said the local authorities have yet to meet for creation of a multi-layered security plan, securing the “inner, middle, and outer layers” of the venue.

She said the city’s Public Safety Security Command Center will be at the helm of drafting the security plan together with other members of the security clusters during the coordinating conference.

She said backpacks, jackets, and bladed weapons will be prohibited at the venue on this date.

She said it remains uncertain whether outgoing President Duterte will attend his daughter’s oath-taking but added that if the President will attend, the enforcement of the security plan will have to be coordinated with the Presidential Security Group.

On Monday, the outgoing mayor announced that she considered no other place but this city as a venue for her inauguration.

She said that a transition team has been created to coordinate with the Office of the Vice President.

Duterte served as vice mayor from 2007 to 2010, mayor from 2010 until 2013, elected as mayor in 2016 when her father ran for President, and was reelected in 2019 with youngest brother Sebastian as the vice mayor.

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on the result of the VP race

It is often said that the voice of the people is the voice of God. In this regard, I humbly concede my vice presidential bid to Rep. Leni Robredo, who, by all accounts and with 96% of the votes already tallied, is our country's presumptive Vice President-elect. Rep. Leni is not only leading the race, she has clearly won it.

While losing an election hurts, nothing is more painful than the sight of a divided country. Thus, I call on all the other candidates to respect the people's will and rally behind presumptive President-elect Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte and his presumptive Vice President-elect Leni Robredo.

Let us begin the journey toward healing and unification.

I am confident that Vice President-elect Leni will likewise respect and value the people's will by giving her full support to the country's new President and his vision to end the disorder in the people's lives and introduce real change to our country.

I call on the people to rally behind our newly elected leaders. It is in this crucial hour that our voice is needed the most. Let us work together and let the process of real change begin.

Cayetano leads CNN online polls

The Senate leader also took the lead in CNN Philippines' online polls. During the debate, the news outlet asked online readers who their VP bet is. Cayetano was the top choice, garnering 41 percent of the votes.

In a separate statement, Duterte congratulated his running mate, describing him as the clear winner in the debate. "Alan was able to show the political will, courage, and strength of character that we are offering to the Filipino people. He was able to distinguish himself from the others and put forward our bold solutions to end the country's disorder and realize meaningful change. His performance affirmed my decision to pick him as my running mate. He will truly fight for the people," Duterte said.

This was echoed by Atty. Paola Alvarez, spokesperson of PDP-Laban, Duterte's political party. "Sinusuportahan talaga namin si Sen. Alan bilang ka-tandem ni Mayor Duterte. Lubhang nagustuhan namin ang kanyang debate performance. Naipakita niya kung ano talaga ang agenda ng tambalang Duterte-Cayetano. Pinamalas talaga niya ang tapang ng loob at political will na kailangan sa ating mga namumuno," Alvarez said.

Cayetano is running with Duterte under a comprehensive platform of government, which aims to end the country's disorder caused by crime, illegal drugs, and corruption.

PRESS RELEASE
03 October 2015

Cayetano thanks Duterte for supporting his VP bid

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano expressed his gratitude to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for supporting the senator’s vice presidential bid in the upcoming national elections.

In an interview following their dinner meeting on Tuesday (September 29), Duterte was asked by media members in Davao City to compare Cayetano with other possible candidates for vice president, to which the mayor responded, “Wala, wipe out ‘yan sila lahat sa kanya.”

Duterte also lauded the Senate leader’s “good grasp of practical solutions” for the country’s enduring problems on poverty, poor infrastructure, and lack of inclusive economic growth.

Cayetano, for his part, thanked the mayor for believing in his ability to serve the country in a higher office. He said he also continues to pray for a president who will take on the challenge of creating genuine change in the lives of Filipino families.

“I join my fellow Filipinos in hoping for the best. Mayor Duterte is a very decisive person, he’s the type of leader who offers concrete solutions to problems and really takes action,” the senator said in a radio interview a day after he officially announced his plan to run for VP.

“When I announced my candidacy in Davao, I took a step of faith. I told myself that a good partner is really worth waiting for," he added.

The senator, meanwhile, stressed that whatever happens in the following months preceding the 2016 polls, he will remain committed to his goal of pushing for real change and a more inclusive growth throughout the country.

Philippine Vice President Binay Quits Cabinet Amid Graft Probes

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay, who is running for president next year, has resigned from the cabinet in a break with President Benigno Aquino as he is investigated for corruption.

Binay is being probed by the Ombudsman's office for alleged corrupt practices while serving as mayor of the financial district of Makati in the capital Manila.

He was mayor for two decades and his approval and trust ratings remain the highest among the country's top five national officials, beating Aquino, according to a survey by independent pollster Pulse Asia released on Monday.

But his ranking in surveys for possible candidates in the 2016 presidential election fell to second place for the first time this month, according to Pulse Asia and another pollster, Social Weather Stations.

"This is voluntary and there is nothing that can change his mind," Mar-Len Abigail Binay, Jejomar Binay's daughter and a member of the House of Representatives, said in a radio interview, adding her father was "very tired" of not being able to fight the accusations.

Allies of Aquino in the Senate have been steering months-long probes into allegations of kickbacks, ill-gotten wealth, bid rigging and money laundering against Binay, his son who is the current Makati City mayor, and his business associates.
