Juan Ponce Enrile outlives 8 popes, set to see 9th

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

May 6, 2025 | 6:04pm

MANILA, Philippines — Many Filipinos joke about the longevity of former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, and now, they have another point of reference to quip about.

Since being born on February 14, 1924, the centenarian has seen the Catholic Church led by eighth Supreme Pontiffs.

Following the passing of Pope Francis last month, Enrile is set to witness the leadership of a ninth pope.

At the time of his birth, the pope was Pius XI who succeeded Benedict XV two years earlier.

The first conclave Enrile was alive to see was the election of Pius XII in 1939. Nineteen years later, he was succeeded by John XXIII, who was pope for four years.

People will be aware that there were three popes in 1978 — Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II — and the latter led Catholics for 26 years, the third-longest pontificate in history.

Benedict XVI succeeded John Paul II but historically renounced the papacy in 2013, a first in six centuries, leading to the election of Francis, the first Latin-American pope.

The College of Cardinals will gather and be sequestered in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel beginning May 7 to decide the new leader of the Catholic Church.

With three Filipino cardinals taking part in the vote, there is a possibility that Enrile will live to see a first-ever Filipino pope.

Therapist-author: 'K-dramas transform lives but should not replace therapy'

Korean-American therapist and author Jeanie Chang

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

May 1, 2025 | 5:57pm

MANILA, Philippines — Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Jeanie Chang is very much aware how much K-dramas can affect people's lives and their well-being.

Chang is the Korean-American author of "How K-Dramas Can Transform Your Life: Powerful Lessons on Belongingness, Healing, and Mental Health," a best-selling book that draws the correlation between K-Dramas and livelihood.

The therapist visited Taguig last April 26 for an intimate talk and book signing session, where she briefly discussed the topics her book tackles.

She told those present, including Philstar.com, that she wrote the book for herself, "What you're reading is my own mental health and self-care."

For Chang, the reason why K-dramas do well or connect a lot to viewers is because they talk about people.

Related: IU remembers co-star Kang Myung Joo as 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' tops new survey

Chang said she loves hearing people say they feel validated about watching K-dramas, noting the core of human nature is to be understood, which many fans K-dramas make them feel.

"[K-dramas] allows the space to feel something like crying, we all have our emotional experiences," Chang continued. "Mental health hygiene is finding a way to navigate all the moments of your life."

The author shared that K-dramas are mostly written by women, and writers get a lot of say over the directors (which are mostly men). Chang also pointed out that most K-drama audiences are women.

The cover of Chang's book features the Korean word "jeong," which means kinship, belongingness, attachment, and in the Filipino context, "bayanihan."

The concept is touched upon in the book and in K-dramas as is "noonchi," the Korean art of emotional and social intelligence. In fact, Chang's name on social media is Noona's Noonchi.

Related: Lee Dong Wook, Lee Joo Bin lead 'The Divorce Insurance' cast

Chang said the concept of "noonchi" is keenly observing and assessing relational dynamics, showing empathy and compassion in decision-making, and heightened attunement and discernment.

Another concept tackled in her book and in K-dramas is filial piety — deep sense of family obligation, pleasing parents, and bringing honor — which has Eastern origins but is universal in nature.

e therapist shared that grief is the biggest issue brought to her by readers and viewers, trumping depression. The Korean author shared her list of Korean dramas that they can watch in addressing this issue. These include "My Mister," "Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha," and "Vincenzo."

Chang stressed that after watching K-dramas, people should not let it replace therapy.

"Series are only powerful healing tools, if you think you need therapy then you should get it," Chang ended. "Lean into a community, you don't have to be alone or lonely."

MANILA, Philippines — The Samsung Performing Arts Theater (S-PAT) will once again host performances spanning different genres in celebration of International Dance Day this April.

After a successful debut in 2024, the International Dance Day Fest returns this year with the theme "Dance For All" and a bigger line-up of artists, over 1,200 performers.

International Dance Day was conceptualized by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute back in 1982 and is now celebrated annually every April 29 as a tribute to the "father of modern ballet" Jean-Georges Noverre.

This year's celebration in the Philippines will kick off with an opening gala on April 23 featuring a special performance of "Autobiography (v 105)" by the United Kingdom's Company Wayne McGregor.

Chris Mohnani, S-PAT's Managing Director, shared in a media conference that the inaugural edition was supposed to have an opening gala but it wasn't put together on time.

But now with the assistance of the British Council, plans can now push through and funds from the opening gala will be for the benefit of the Artists Welfare Project, an initiative offering healthcare to a number of dancers.

"International Dance Day isn't just a celebration of inclusivity, it's a reminder that dance is for everyone," Mohnani added.

Company Wayne McGregor will also conduct a special workshop and masterclass on the festival's second day, April 24, which will be highlighted by the Folk and Traditional Dance Gala at S-PAT.

Participating groups for Day 2 include Bayanihan, The National Folk Dance Company, the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, and the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe.

Day 3 (April 25) will be dedicated to the Street Dance Gala, last year's most exciting portion, with performances by tropy-winning groups UPeepz, A-Team, Power Impact Dancers, and many more.

The following day, April 26, is a Ballet Gala featuring leading companies Ballet Philippines, Ballet Manila, and the Philippine Ballet Theater, plus the participation of the American Ballet Theatre and Hong Kong Ballet, among others.

Wrapping up the celebrations on April 27 is the Contemporary Gala which will this year focus on artists from outside Metro Manila.

Also the point of special focus on the closing day is paradance led by the decorated Philippine Para Dancesport Team.

Outside of the performances, multidisciplinary movement group Fifth Wall Fest will showcase site-specific works, while a dance market and bazaar will open throughout the festival.

March 4, 2025 | 7:13pm

MANILA, Philippines — Different generations of Filipino-American "High School Musical" stars reunited at one of the many Oscars parties held after the 97th Academy Awards.

Olivia Rodrigo and Vanessa Hudgens both attended the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party held in the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, coming together on the red carpet after snapping individual photos.

Both actresses-singers wore black outfits — Olivia in a leather halter top Roberto Cavalli dress and Vanessa in one-shoulder thigh-high feathery Dolce & Gabbana dress.

This marked Vanessa's first red carpet appearance since giving birth to her first child with husband and American football player Cole Tucker who was her date for the night.

Meanwhile, Olivia was accompanied by boyfriend Louis Partridge, star of the "Enola Holmes" movies.

The two previously crossed paths at the 2022 Met Gala when Vanessa was co-hosting the red carpet and Olivia was an invited guest.

Vanessa starred in the three "High School Musical" films, while Olivia broke out in the "High School Musical: The Series" inspired by the trilogy.

In the show, Olivia's character Nini auditions to play the role of Gabriella Montez originated by Vanessa.

Other former Disney stars in attendance at the after-party were Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Lindsay Lohan, as were new Oscar winners Mikey Madison and Zoe Saldaña.

Palme d'Or winner "Anora" topped the Oscars this year as it won five of its six nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress for Madison, and filmmaker Sean Baker winning Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.

The honors made the director the first individual to win four Oscars for the same film, and the only other person since Walt Disney in 1953 to win four Oscars in one night (Disney's wins were for four different categories).

Among the pieces the PPO are expected to perform during the tour are Felix Mendelssohn's "Symphony No. 4 Italian," Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake Suite," Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5," among others.

"This tour is also a way to connect with our fellow Filipinos in the UK and introduce our rich musical heritage to international audiences."

From May 13 to 16, the PPO will perform single shows in Bristol Beacon, London's Cadogan Hall, Birmingham's Symphony Hall, and Guildford's G Live.

Denise Julia to file defamation suit vs BJ Pascual, Killa Kush

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Young artist Denise Julia is planning a defamation suit against celebrity photographer BJ Pascual and content creator Killa Kush following a viral issue involving all three parties.

The issue surfaced after Pascual referred to Julia as his "worst" work experience during Kush's podcast, citing her cancelation of a planned shoot.

Julia broke her initial social media detox to issue a response, sharing screenshots of conversations between her and Pascual's managers about a photoshoot that was expanded to include a music video, which ballooned the planned budget.

Pascual also posted screenshots feeling compelled to share additional information because what Julia had shown did not reflect the full context.

The two communicated following the podcast episode's release and the issue's eruption, expressing openness for a resolution after the holidays.

However, on Christmas Day, Julia appeared to reference comments made by Kush, with the singer posting on X (formerly Twitter) that she plans to meet her in court.

Among the comments addressed were alleged twisted narratives involving Kush, receipts Julia claimed were just Kush "trash-talking" behind her back, accusations of overusing Julia's name and photos for engagement at Kush’s events, and claims that Kush had asked to make out with her.

"Trash talks people in front of us but puts a smile on her face when she sees them, talking about love and light after milking my issue for a hate train, I could go on but I'll save that for court," Julia said.

Julia also shared an exchange with Kush, where she declared her intention to go to court: "Assuming you'd make a TikTok out of this too, I'll just add that to the lawsuit. So thanks in advance." Kush responded simply with gratitude and well wishes.

The singer also later reposted one of Pascual's screenshots post with a screen recording of their managers' conversations for full transparency.

"We went into this wanting to work with you — we're genuine fans and were so excited about the collaboration," she said. "From the very beginning, we were upfront about our budget and what we can afford to execute the music video, the Photoshoot, the album art, the trailer and press photos. I had moved my entire release date just to be able to work with you, out of respect for your time."

Julia said what hurt the most was seeing her character publicly attacked over something out of her control as it was a private business negotiation between their managers

"You targeted me to bring me down. I thought this was something we had agreed on to talk about in person. We are now in contact with our legal team about a defamation suit. I hate that this had to go this way when it didn't have to," Julia ended.

Jose Mari Chan pitches touring 'Going Home to Christmas' musical

Jose Mari Chan pitches touring 'Going Home to Christmas' musical

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

November 30, 2024 | 5:23pm

MANILA, Philippines — Singer-songwriter Jose Mari Chan suggested that Repertory Philippines should stage its newest production, "Going Home to Christmas," around the country.

Repertory Philippines held the gala premiere of "Going Home to Christmas" last November 29 at Makati's Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza with the entire Chan family present.

The production revolves around several strangers on Christmas Eve at the airport and their personal associations with Christmas.

Ahead of the gala, the theater company's president Mindy Perez-Rubio recalled the musical was five to six years in the making. Artistic director Jeremy Domingo added that its conception was proposed by the iconic musician himself.

Domingo, who is making his directorial debut, called up "the great Jose Mari Chan" onstage during the premiere to share a few words.

"Not great, just a humble singer-songwriter," Chan simply said.

"It's always been my dream since I was a young boy, as a singer-songwriter, to write a full-length musical in the tradition of Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein II," Chan said." Thanks to Repertory Philippines for giving me a boost in fulfilling that dream."

Chan went on to thank Perez-Rubio, Domingo, musical director Ejay Yatco, and writers Robbie Guevara, Luna Grino-Inocian, and Joel Trinidad.

After the show, Chan returned onstage to shake hands with each individual member of the "Going Home to Christmas" cast.

"You gave wings to my songs. I hope that maybe this show can be brought to different parts of the Philippines — not only to Cebu, also Bohol, Dipolog, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo," Chan suggested.

One cast member suggested Vancouver — a reference to the musical's events — which earned laughs from the crowds.

"I'm speechless, the whole show, there were tears in my eyes, you've brought light to my songs," Chan ended.

'Hello, Love, Again' sets single day box office record, to donate some proceeds to typhoon victim

Kathryn Bernardo, Cathy Garcia-Sampana and Alden Richards during the red carpet premiere of "Hello Love Again" on Nov. 12, 2024 in SM Megamall

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

November 20, 2024 | 9:51am

MANILA, Philippines — "Hello, Love, Again" starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards, continue to break box office records less than a week since its global premiere.

The sequel initially set the record for the biggest opening day by a Filipino film at P85 million then became the highest-grossing for a Filipino film in North America with $2.4 million (almost P141 million).

For comparison, the 2019 original also directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana earned $1.99 million (P116.7 million) during its entire North American run.

The film earned P245 million on its first three days in the Philippines en route to earning P566 million as of November 18.

The current box office earnings include P131 million from Saturday alone, yet another box office record.

It is on track to become the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time, currently held by last year's "Rewind" starring Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, which claimed the title from the 2019 original "Hello, Love, Goodbye."

"We're so blessed because binigyan ng mga tao ng chance 'yung pelikula namin at lahat ng nare-receive namin. Wala na kaming mahihiling pa," said Kathryn.

Alden added as he expressed his thanks to supporters, "No words can express how grateful we are for the turnout and we're very happy na maraming naka-appreciate nito."

Part of the proceeds of "Hello, Love, Again" will go toward helping the victims of Typhoon Pepito, which passed through the Philippines over the weekend.

Kathryn and Alden will also represent the film as it closes the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.

"Hello, Love Again" continues to screen in the Philippines and North America, and later this week opens in five countries in the Middle East — where a huge population of Filipino migrant workers may boost ticket sales even further.

MANILA, Philippines — The popular Halloween event, Opulence Ball, is returning for a third edition, this time taking inspiration from the glitz, glamour, and allure of the 1970s.

The Opulence Ball is the brainchild of host-entrepreneur Raymond "Mond" Gutierrez and events specialist Ashleigh Rye as part of the former's efforts to make Manila a premiere party destination in Asia.

The inaugural event held in 2019 carried a "Let Them Eat Cake" theme inspired by Marie Antoinette, and because of the pandemic, the ball made its grand comeback last year with a mythology and folklore theme.

The 2023 edition saw celebrities and invited guests hitting the red carpet with their fashion interpretations of deities from around the world.

With nothing to hold it back, the ball returns with a "The Velvet Underground" theme inspired by the '70s, an era filled with hedonistic pursuits and individualistic expressions.

Guests invited to the event on Halloween night in Makati's Manila Peninsula will be dazzling in '70s outfits, echoing the decade's creativity and beauty. Mond and Ashleigh tapped the likes of Solenn Heussaff, Catriona Gray, Isabelle Daza, Marina Summers, BJ Pascual, Jason Dhakal, and Christi McGarry for teasers of the 2024 Opulence Ball, and all are expected to be in attendance on October 31.

MMFF 2024 announces second batch of films.Posters for the second batch of MMFF 2024 movies

Metro Manila Film Festival

SENTOSA, Singapore — The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) unveiled the second batch of films that will be competing at the festival's 50th edition later this year.

The five movies were unveiled during an event last October 22 in Mandaluyong's Podium Hall hosted by Jake Ejercito and Isabelle Daza. These entries were chosen among finished films submitted on or before September 30.

The films are the romance films "Hold Me Close" and "My Future You," thrillers "Topakk" and "Uninvited," and horror movie "Espantaho."

"Hold Me Close," helmed by Jason Paul Laxamana, who competed last year with "Penduko," sees him reuniting with his "Expensive Candy" stars Julia Barretto and Carlo Aquino.

Barretto last headlined an MMFF film in 2016 for "Vince and Kath and James," while Aquino's last entry in the festival was back in 2012 for Chito S. Roño's "Shake, Rattle and Roll XIV."

Roño directs Judy Ann Santos in "Espantaho," her first movie since the 2019 MMFF movie "Mindanao," where the actress is joined by Lorna Tolentino and Mon Confiado.

The director himself is coming back to the film festival after a decade when he competed with "Feng Shui 2."

"Uninvited" stars Nadine Lustre and Vilma Santos — the two most recent Best Actress winners at the festival — along with Aga Muhlach under the direction of Dan Villegas, his first MMFF film since 2017's "All of You."

Richard Somes' "Topakk" is headlined by Arjo Atayde and previously screened in several international film festivals last year including Cannes, Locarno, and Sitges.

In the cast with Atayde are Julia Montes, Sid Lucero, Kokoy de Santos, Enchong Dee, and Vin Abrenica.

"My Future You" is the first MMFF movie of love team Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin, under the direction of Crisanto Aquino.

The first batch of films announced earlier this year were "The Kingdom" starring Piolo Pascual and Vic Sotto; Vice Ganda's comeback movie "And The Breadwinner Is" directed by Jun Robles Lana; last year's Best Director Pepe Diokno adapting "Himala: Isang Musical;" Zig Dulay's "Green Bones;" and Kerwin Go's "Strange Frequencies: Haunted Hospital."

The 10 competing films of MMFF 2023 managed to collectively bring in P1.069 billion, beating the previous record held by the 2018 edition, a feat mostly attributed to the Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera movie "Rewind" — currently the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time.

Over 70 Filipino authors and publishers, as well as around 700 Filipino titles, including books and graphic novels, will be featured at next year's edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The significant moment will showcase the Philippines' history, culture, and heritage, particularly when it comes to literature, with Jose Rizal — who published "Noli Me Tangere" in Germany — inspiring the country's participation theme, "The imagination peoples the air."

National Book Development Board Chairperson Francis Ang II said it would "reinforce efforts to promote the growth of the Philippine book industry, and gain local and international support and recognition."

Binibining Pilipinas 2024 queens decide: 'Mahal mo o mahal ka,' 'fan o AFAM'

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

September 13, 2024 | 11:20am

MANILA, Philippines — The victorious queens of Binibining Pilipinas 2024 visited Philstar.com's office where they were asked several questions related to relationships.

The queens were first asked the ever-popular love conundrum: mahal mo o mahal ka?

"For the sake of choosing a side hmmm... I would choose mahal ako," said 2nd runner-up Trisha Martinez. "I'm a beauty queen, napakarami kong dapat mahalin so dapat intindihin and mahalin niya ako."

Fellow runner-up Christal "Tala" dela Cruz laughed because she wanted to choose both options, instead going with "mahal ako."

"Kasi if you love me, I will learn to love you. If mahal mo ako, that's when you know a person would do anything for me, risk anything for me. I will love him then for the way he makes [an] effort, that's real love," Tala added.

The crowned queens, Binibining Pilipinas International Myrna Esguerra and Binibining Pilipinas Globe Jasmin Bungay, both chose "mahal ko."

"I can only speak for my present self. Ewan ko para sa'kin all these years [were] 'gusto ko, gusto ko, gusto ko' muna bago ako magustuhan. Ganun lang, preference!" explained Jasmin.

Myrna shared that based on the past, people cannot force connection no matter how hard they try.

"I would rather choose the one that I love instead of the one who loves me. If that happens, I may just hurt the person and I don't want to hurt anyone else," Myrna said. "I don't want to go into a relationship knowing I'm not able to love this person for who he is."

The queens were then asked if they would rather date a fan or an AFAM (a foreigner assigned in Manila).

Trisha prefers Pinoys over foreigners so she went with dating a fan, "I want to see his perspective of me and I also want to show the true me with or without the crown."

Tala giggled as she pointed out she looks like an AFAM, being half-Australian, but like Trisha, she went with dating a fan.

"[Fans are] very loving, they show appreciation and give gifts, what more if you became more?" Tala continued. "You would love that idea that this person truly loves you more than the pageantry, you would show your true self and that's beautiful."

Jasmin similarly answered dating a fan for two reasons, the first being a fan sees something good in you and it's a chance to show more of oneself.

"And as a fan of a lot of people, I think it's nice 'yung mga dreams ko in my head could happen to me and I could make it happen for someone," Jasmin explained her second reason.

Myrna began by saying she would not date someone who loves her just because of her physical appearance.

"Sometimes, admiration isn't love and I don't want that. I'd rather date an AFAM than date a fan. I want to receive a pure and genuine love," Myrna chuckled.

She also shared being in a relationship where she was loved just because she's beautiful. She was not sure if he loved her for who she was as a person or for her career.

"I don't want that to happen again, and well, an AFAM has good genes. So, why not?!" Myrna ended with a laugh.

MANILA, Philippines — The Christmas season is truly in full swing in the Philippines as ice skating concert "Disney On Ice" announced it would be coming back to the country with a brand new show concept.

"Disney On Ice" made a grand return to the Philippines last year by bringing its "100 Years of Wonder" show, coinciding with Disney's 100th anniversary looking back at its century of success.

Prior to that, the popular ice skating concert was last seen in the country on January 5, 2020, several weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the entire globe.

Just a few of the characters expected to appear are Anna, Elsa, and Olaf from "Frozen," Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," Rapuznel from "Tangled," Belle and the Beast from "Beauty and the Beast," Maui and the titular character from "Moana," and Mirabel from "Encanto."

The show will incorporate cutting-edge figure-skating, eye-catching costumes, stunning set designs, innovative lighting, thrilling special effects, and high-flying jumps.

Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel wears fan letters in 'Drag Race Philippines' appearance

Kristofer Purnell - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Miss Universe 2022 and Filipino-American designer R'Bonney Gabriel appeared on reality competition show "Drag Race Philippines" in an outfit made from letters sent to her by fans and supporters.

The second episode of "Drag Race Philippines" Season 3 carried a sustainability theme where the competing queens had to make two outfits: one from sari-sari store products and one from recycled material provided by production.

R'Bonney, an advocate for sustainable fashion, was the special guest judge for the episode and joined in on the challenge's theme.

The beauty queen-designer stitched together fan letters to cover her shoulders, legs, and hair.

"Kept all my fan letters from last year and incorporated it into my guest judging look I designed for 'Drag Race Philippines' because I love y'all," R'Bonney said in one Instagram post, and in another said, "I had a feeling that hoarding all my fan letters would come in handy one day."

R'Bonney is the first Filipino-American to be crowned Miss Universe and since her coronation has made frequent visits to the Philippines.

Drag queen Myx Chanel won the episode's maxi challenge and badge with their superhero-villain concept while contestants Angel and Tita Baby were dramatically spared from elimination by host and main judge Mama Pao Ballesteros.
