Ornella Brianna: Following her mom's footsteps?

By Manila Bulletin Entertainment
Published Oct 2, 2025 12:18 am
Ornella Briana
Ornella Briana
A Swiss-Filipina rising star in Philippine theater, Ornella Brianna, carries the legacy of her artist mom.
She was born in Hong Kong, and her life has always been surrounded by creativity, culture, and performance. The eldest of three siblings, Ornella grew up watching her mother perform in various events in Hong Kong while taking musical and dance classes at her mother’s own studio. She is the daughter of international stage performer Tricia Canilao, who performed Kim in Miss Saigon (Netherlands) and Gigi and Ellen in Miss Saigon (Asia and UK), and in Hong Kong Disneyland.
She confessed, “I really want to play Kim one day! Miss Saigon is one of my favorite musicals, especially when I got the chance to watch it when it was here in the Philippines, so it’d be great to play Kim.”
Making a name for herself.
When her family moved back from Hong Kong in 2016, Ornella took her very first theater workshop with Repertory Philippines, under the mentorship of Ayam Barredo.
There, she stepped into her first leading role as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. It was an experience that sparked her love for musical theater. Just a year later, she appeared in A Christmas Carol with 9Works Theatrical.
Now, as a teenager, she makes her highly anticipated return to musical theater in Alice in Wonderland. It’s a moment that feels like “coming back home” to the stage that shaped her.
As an artist herself, she doesn't care what kind of roles would be assigned to her.
“I don’t really mind what roles I’m assigned, even if I have my preferences. I see every role as an opportunity to learn and grow.
“Being in the ensemble teaches teamwork and discipline, supporting roles allow me to develop character work, and lead roles challenge me to carry the story with confidence.”
For her, even if she’s not being cast, it teaches resilience and humility.
“I truly believe in the saying, ‘there are no small roles, only small actors’ because theater isn’t just about being in the spotlight, it’s about collaboration and storytelling. Every role, big or small, helps me become a stronger and more versatile artist.”
She’s her mom’s daughter, no matter what.
There is no denying that she looks up to her mother.
“One of the most important things my mom always told me was to give 120 percent in everything I do. She explained that if I only give 100 percent and I fall short, I might end up at 80 percent or 90 percent. But if I push for 120 percent, then even on the days I don’t feel at my best, I’ll still be giving 100 percent.”
“Another piece of advice she gave me was that talent isn’t the only thing that matters. What’s just as important is being a good person, because people will only want to work with you if you’re kind and respectful.
“I’ve always admired her as an artist because when she performs, she has the ability to capture the attention of an entire room. I only had the chance to see her perform a handful of times since most of her shows were either before I was born or when I was too young to remember, but the moments I did witness, and especially the times I was able to perform alongside her, showed me how kind, cooperative, and inspiring she is to work with.
“As a mother, she has always been supportive of me and my brothers, doing anything she can to help us achieve our dreams. She is the strongest and most caring person I know, which is why I look up to her so much.”
“At the same time, she has never wanted me to simply become a ‘mini her,’ especially when it comes to performing. She always told me that she tries not to interfere with my voice or acting, so that I wouldn’t just copy her, but instead grow into my own kind of artist.”
She knows what she wants as an individual.
Although Ornella is Tricia’s daughter, Tricia consistently encourages her to be independent.
With her mother’s legacy as inspiration and her own fearless determination as fuel, Ornella Brianna is stepping into her own spotlight — not as someone’s daughter, but as an emerging artist boldly carving her own path.
Ornella is a determined individual who confidently pursues her own path. She is a singer, dancer, and actor, and has also excelled as a competitive ice skater, earning gold medals in the Philippines and internationally.
Her creativity extends to drawing and painting, but she feels most inspired by musical theater.
Besides Kim, she has many dream roles such as Maggie or Connie in A Chorus Line, Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Eurydice in Hadestown, Cinderella or the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Elphaba in Wicked, and even Angelica or really any role from Hamilton.
As a teenager who dreams of finding a space in a competitive world of theater, she’s mature enough to provide a sound advice for aspiring theater artists, “Stay open to every opportunity, never stop working hard, and remember that each experience, whether it feels like a success or a setback, can teach you something valuable that will help you grow both as a performer and as a person.”
Catch her in Repertory Philippines’ production as Tweedledee, which opened on Aug. 23 till Dec. 14 at Rep Eastwood Theater.
In the production, she has a partner named Tweedledum; their characters are from the English nursery rhyme "Tweedledee and Tweedledum" and Lewis Carroll's 1871 book Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. The names have since become synonymous in Western popular culture slang for any two people whose appearances and actions are identical. (Contributed by Jude Cartalaba)

In recognition of his enduring impact and exceptional contributions to Philippine media, Mr. Eric S. Canoy, Chairman and President of Radio Mindanao Network, Inc. (RMN), has been conferred the prestigious 2025 Golden Dove Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring over four decades of visionary leadership, innovation, and public service in the broadcast industry.

Mr. Canoy has served as the steward of RMN Networks since 2008, following a tenure in various key roles within the organization that began in 1978. Under his leadership, RMN has not only expanded its nationwide reach but also modernized its platforms, including the landmark renewal of its Congressional Franchise (RA 10818) in 2016. He oversaw RMN’s pioneering efforts in High Definition (HD) Radio and the launch of UHF television channel CTV31, which marked the country’s first foray into international entertainment broadcasting with E! Philippines.

A staunch advocate for regional and hyperlocal storytelling, Mr. Canoy also leads RMN-MMV, the network's exclusive marketing arm, and is the driving force behind Media Bai, the first-ever media summit focused on hyperlocal marketing strategies and content creation for the Visayas and Mindanao (VisMin) audience.

Beyond RMN, Mr. Canoy has played influential roles in other broadcast entities such as Interactive Broadcast Media, Inc., and serves on the board of Radio Veritas Global Broadcasting System, Inc. In 2010, he was appointed by then-President Benigno Aquino III as President of IBC-13, where he led efforts to streamline operations in preparation for its privatization.

This Lifetime Achievement Award is a fitting tribute to Mr. Canoy’s relentless dedication to innovation, public service, and the promotion of regional voices in media. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of broadcasters, communicators, and storytellers across the nation.

Apart from this recognition, the RMN Network also garnered other winners in the 28th Golden Dove Awards, such as Best Documentary Program: “Hanip, Harabas, El Niño Phenomenon: Mga Hamon ng Pagbangon”, Best Field Reporter: Chzianelle B. Salazar of DZXL 558 Manila, and most notably, the coveted Best FM Radio Station in Metro Manila, which was awarded to 93.9 iFM Manila.

The Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Golden Dove Awards recognize individuals who have contributed to the advancement of the broadcast industry, elevating the standards of excellence and professionalism, and fulfilling the ideals of the Filipino people.

Bella Thompson

Bella Thompson is ready to kick ass!

The twenty-something actress is gearing up for her first villain role in the upcoming Pinoyflix indie film Beyond The Call of Duty, which stars Martin del Rosario, Paolo Gumabao, and Maxine Trinidad.

She discloses, “I play Jade, the only female villain in the film. She’s a hacker with strong combat skills – smart, fierce, and calculated. She’s the type who can hold her own in any situation. One of those roles that leave a mark.”

Thankfully, Bella’s previous martial arts and military reservist training paid off and kept her in tip-top shape for the role.

She adds, “I underwent Basic Civil Military Training with the Philippine Navy. I’m a reservist. We trained in land navigation, gun handling, and small unit tactics. Outside of that, I’ve been boxing and doing Muay Thai since I was 13. I also learned basic arnis back in Cebu. All that training helped me connect with the physical side of Jade.”

Aside from dabbling in the heady action scenes, Bella is also excited about tackling the very first kontrabida role. She recalls, “I auditioned in November 2024, and when I got the news, I was genuinely excited. It was my first kontrabida and first action role, which was a big step. Plus, being part of a project with such a strong message and veteran actors is an opportunity I value.

She elaborates more on her acting paradigm shift, “Yes, it’s a huge shift, and I love it! Most of my past roles were more on the emotional or light side, but Jade is intense and action-driven. I enjoy characters that challenge me, and I’m open to more offbeat or unconventional roles moving forward.”

Some of Bella’s past movie projects include Ang Kwento ni Makoy with Buboy Villar. She also played the younger version of Beauty Gonzalez in After All.

Bella, currently co-managed by Viva Artist Management and Tyronne Escalante Artist Management, has just finished a Viva film, In Between, with Sue Ramirez and Diego Loyzaga. She also plays Honey Bee Ryder in Ang Mutya ng Section E, which she describes as a fun and colorful project.

As part of her offbeat role, Bella also looks forward to honing her villainess chops under the tutelage of iconic kontrabida actors.

She reveals, “I’m really looking forward to working with Mr. Jeffrey Santos and Sir Dindo Arroyo, both legends regarding kontrabida roles. I grew up watching them, so it’s exciting to share the screen and learn from their experience finally.”

Produced by LCS Film Production and Pinoyflix Films, Beyond the Call of Duty is directed by Jose “JR” Olinares, Jr., and Chavit Singson serves as executive producer.

The movie project also boasts collaborating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Teejay Marquez, Devon Seron, Alex Medina, Ramon Christopher, Dindo Arroyo, Mark Neumann, Migs Almendras, Rob Sy, Marlon Mance, and many others are also part of the cast.

Binibining Pilipinas 2024 winners reveal their favorite beauty queens

Jul 14, 2024 03:47 PM

The winners of the 60th Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant (Facebook)

By Robert R. Requintina

In a moment of vulnerability, the newly crowned queens of Binibining Pilipinas 2024 expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the fans' support and acknowledged their pivotal role in the pageant community. They emphasize the need for sensitivity in comments, as they, too, are human.

Binibining Pilipinas International 2024 Myrna Esguerra and Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2024 Jasmin Bungay made the appeal during their visit to the Manila Bulletin main office in Intramuros last July 12.

"We appreciate your support. Thank you for posting. Without you, pageants would not have reached this far. But we must be sensitive about what we say because we are also human," said Myrna.

She added: "We are not perfect, and we commit mistakes. But that doesn't mean we can be criticized that much to the point you will break a woman down. Let's be kind to one another."

Jasmin said, "To the pageant fans, two things: we appreciate you guys. We thank you for all the support throughout the pageant journey. You are the reason why pageants are still thriving and relevant in the Philippines and why many people and ladies aspire to be beauty queens.

"And No. 2, I hope the pageant community is kinder to one another, especially the ladies. We are on a platform where we are open to criticism, but that does not give us the license to bring a lady down. I hope we embody pageants, which are women's empowerment. We empower women regardless of how they look and regardless of size. The standard now is diverse, and we are starting to appreciate different kinds of beauty," Jasmin said.

pag1.jpeg
Binibining Pilipinas 2024 queens visit the Manila Bulletin main office in Intramuros on July 12. From left: Crystal Jean Dela Cruz, Bb. Pilipinas 1st runner-up; Myrna Esguerra, Bb. Pilipinas International 2024; Mae Kimberly De Luna, winner, 2024 Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award;  Bb. Pilipinas Globe 2024 Jasmin Bungay; and Trisha Martinez, Bb. Pilipinas 2024 second runner-up.

Emotional

At the Manila Bulletin office, pageant veteran Trisha Martinez, who placed 2nd runner-up in the Bb. Pilipinas 2024 beauty contest, became emotional as she remembered the criticisms she faced from fans during the prestigious national pageant on July 7.

"There's too many to mention. Although she was not there, it was Mariel De Leon. We have a similar body type. So, I was body-shamed for being a bit bigger than the prototype of a beauty queen.

"So I'm size-medium, I am size-large. So when I knew Mariel was crowned, I think in 2017, I thought na puwede rin pala. So Mariel was a huge part of my motivation," Trisha said.

Jasmin was visibly moved at this moment.

"Whenever Ate Trisha mentions bashing, I feel that the people outside do not know what's happening inside. If you ask any of the ladies kung mananalo so Trisha, kung may reklamo sila just because of her extra excess, walang makakapag-sabi. We see how she is throughout the journey. If she won a crown that night, no one would contest because of her size.

b2.jpeg

"People say Ate Trish was a front-runner; some would say na hindi because she's big. Pero sa amin talaga, she is a deserving winner," said Jasmin.

Trisha commented: "Last year, when I joined Binibining Pilipinas, I was not bashed. I was one of the fan favorites.

"Pero hindi nila nakita yung part of me na malaki ako. But the second time was difficult because one single mistake, people would see you.

"This time yung body ko ang napansin nila. I improved on my pasarela and my communication skills. Pero hindi nila napansin yun.

"Pero I became a runner-up and I could still see comments na hindi raw kasi ako nag-diet kaya runner-up lang siya. It hurt so much," she said.

b3.jpeg

Trisha, who shed tears, said she felt her efforts for this year's competition were invalidated. She believes there will always be bashers in her life.

"But you know what, kahit na ano pa ang marating mo sa buhay, there will always be trolls. May comment talaga sila sa'yo. That's part of being a beauty queen," Trisha also said.

Myrna said criticisms do not define a person, but "you define who you are."

She added: "Comments that matter will come from people who matter. The people you love."

"Ate Trish, we love you," Jasmin said.

b4.jpeg

Favorite beauty queens

The Binibinis continued to answer the question about their favorite beauty queens.

"As for favorite beauty queens, I go for the current ones. I would say Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray.  Dalawa talaga. Hindi kasi ako makapili," Jasmin said.

She also said: "Aside from bringing honor and pride to the country by winning Miss Universe, they represented multi-faceted women. Like Pia, now she is venturing into an image of being an author and international brand ambassador. So, it just attests to how far we can go as women.

"Even with Catriona Gray, during her journey, she set the standard so high for the next beauty queens, for us, the next generation, to further develop ourselves into holistic women so that they will not look down on beauty queens. During her stint, she used the platform to introduce our country well. So I admire both of them because they represent powerful women," said Jasmin.

b5.jpeg

Myrna voted for Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj.

"She was there during the coronation. During rehearsals, we gathered around her, and she prayed for everyone. Sobrang special ng moment na yun because maraming girls ang umiyak during that moment.  It tells a lot about how God works in our lives. As a born-again Christian, it's amazing how God can make your life bigger than you can imagine.

"In life, it's not enough that you are doing better. There should be a purpose for why you are doing things you are good at. So I love how Venus influenced people, and she's fearless in showing how God transformed her life. I applaud her for that," the beauty queen from Abra said.

b6.jpeg
Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award

Crystal Jean Dela Cruz, 2024 Bb. Pilipinas first runner-up, said she also admires Venus.

"I can relate to her because she came from the province with no water or electricity, and I felt that, too. Even if I look like a girl with a multicultural background, I have to make my way to the places I want to go. She has changed many lives by bringing positivity and inspiration to me and other girls. She came from humble beginnings, and she worked her way up. I like to be her. During the rehearsals, I saw her. I was a fangirl at that moment. You can feel her authenticity, and she's like a storyteller to me," she said.

Mae Kimberly De Luna, winner of the Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award, said Samantha Bernardo inspires her.

"The first time I saw her, it was love at first sight. She's so beautiful, and I met her two years ago. I learned her stories, and that's when I realized she inspired me. But if I were to choose,  dalawa sila: Samantha Bernardo, and Pia Wurtzbach. We've seen their struggles and challenges in Binibining Pilipinas, which left a mark. They said never to give up on your dreams. They also came from humble beginnings. And no matter their challenges, they fight for it," said Kim.
