Rising star Jess Martinez recalls the first day of taping for TV series: 'Nanginginig ako nun'

Everything is looking up for rising star Jess Martinez, who has shifted her focus from being a social media influencer to pursuing a career in acting.

After spending some time concentrating on TikTok, Jess seems to have discovered what truly brings her joy and fulfillment.

'I'm not testing the waters. I want to go full-time now. I love showbiz,' said Jess during an interview in Boro, Quezon City recently. Portraying different characters allows her to showcase her talent.

'I'm not in showbiz for fame, but what I like about it is that I get to express my emotions. I love acting because it allows me to showcase my diverse personalities. Being an influencer is routine-based. However, in show business, I get to portray different characters,' she said.

Her love for acting started when she started watching TV series. It was then that she told herself she wanted to try showbiz.

'My family is in business. It is my personal decision to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. When I watched different series like Marimar, I told myself I want to be a star one day, or be seen on television,' said Jess.

Jess currently appears in the Kapuso series 'Sanggang Dikit' starring Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado. But her first acting gig was for the popular afternoon series 'Abot-Kamay Na Pangarap.' Then she also guested in Regal Studios and Pepito Manaloto. 'Memorable ang 'Abot-Kamay' dahil four weeks ako roon. Whenever I have scenes with Wilma Doesnt, who is my Tita there, she helps me out.'

She excitedly recalls her first taping day with versatile actress Carmina Villaroel. 'My first taping day ever was a scene with Carmina Villaroel. Nanginginig talaga ako nun. Isa lang ang line ko noon pero kabado talaga ako. Natutunan ko talaga dapat mabilis ka sa catch up and meron kang presence of mind kasi minsan kung may binigay sa'yo na script, hindi assurance na yun na talaga ang sasabihin mo. Pwede siyang tanggalin or baguhin. Dapat, you have to be in the moment. You have to be fast. (My first taping day ever was a scene with Carmina Villaroel. I was nervous then. I only had one line then, but I was nervous. I learned that you have to be quick to catch up and have presence of mind, because sometimes, even if you are given a script, it doesn't guarantee that you will say it. It can be removed or changed. You have to be in the moment),' said Jess. 

Having a recurring role as a policewoman in 'Sanggang Dikit,' Jess said she feels comfortable working on the set of the new series.

'Super bait nila Jennlyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo. I'm comfortable with them because we had workshops before the taping. In that training, nakabulo na kami ng friendship. (Jennlyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo are super nice. I was comfortable with them because we had workshops before the taping. In that training, we have developed a friendship.)'

Before acting, Jess was heavily immersed in social media, particularly in the fashion and lifestyle sectors. 'Through TikTok, I get to express who I am. I get to dress up and get a glimpse of how my family is.'

However, Jess wanted to explore other fields, so she decided to venture into the entertainment industry. She's one of the exclusive talents of the Artist Circle, headed by its President and CEO Rams David.

''They are family to me because they accept me for who I am. I'm happy I chose Artist Circle because I'm not only improving as an artist, but also as a person,' Jess said.

Born in Cotabato City, Jess grew up in Davao City. Then Jess and her family moved to Manila in 2020. Since then, Jess hasn't returned to the province.

At 23, Jess admitted she only had crushes. 'Wala pa akong pinapakilala sa parents ko. I've never been in love, but I have crushes.'

Jess admires celebrity siblings Atasha and Andres Muhlach, Alden Richards, Kyle Echarri, and Heart Evangelista.

On love teams, Jess said: 'I'm not closing my doors to love teams. But if I had the chance, gusto ko iba-iba ang partner.'

Actress Shyr Valdez is also guiding Jess in her journey in show business. Asked what she learns from Shyr, Jess said: 'Always stay grounded. Kahit ano ang maabot mo sa showbiz, dapat grateful ka sa mga tumutulong sa iyo sa industry. (No matter what you achieve in showbiz, you should be grateful to those who help you in the industry.)'

G-Force celebrates 20 years of purposeful and creative dancing

G-Force, the dance group founded by celebrity choreographer Georcelle “Teacher Georcelle” Dapat-Sy, celebrated its 20th anniversary this month. The highlight of their celebration was the “G-Force Project 2025” concert, recently held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Hundreds of performers danced on stage in a spectacular show that close to 2,000 attendees witnessed. The performers included celebrities Maja Salvador and Cassy Legaspi (mentees of Teacher Georcelle), international choreographers/dancers Ben Tovale and Laurence Kaiwai, and G-Force teachers, Teacher Georcelle herself, and over 700 students of the G-Force Dance Center in their schools in Shangri-La Plaza, Quezon City, Alabang, and BGC-Blanco. There were over 30 dance production numbers spanning various genres, ranging from hip-hop, K-pop, OPM, and sexy.

The youngest student-dancers were four years old, and the oldest was 71. The concert culminated with all the performers dancing to the song “I’m G,” while the members of the audience followed the choreography in their places.

Spotted in the audience were news anchor Iya Villania and her husband, TV host Drew Arellano, and social media sensation Niana Guerrero.

Maja, who was a teenager when Teacher Georcelle first taught her dance moves, was thrilled to be part of the exhilarating show. “I am happy na kapag may ganitong G-Force Project ay naiimbitahan tayo. I can’t say ‘no’ to them,” said Maja.

Georcelle was extremely happy with the show and the people’s response. The support is a testament to the creative movement she has been advocating these past two decades.

“It’s a humbling and deeply fulfilling experience,” she said. “What started as a movement has become a national force—not just in dance, but also in culture. I’ve realized that consistency in passion and purpose creates a legacy. G-Force has become a platform for the transformation of lives, careers, and mindsets.”

G-Force will continue to promote expression, discipline, and confidence through their dance workshops. Additionally, they are planning several special initiatives, including a dance retreat, a workshop series in Canada, and another dance concert at The Theatre at Solaire on July 20.

Visionary Teacher Georcelle assured, “G-Force will continue to be a cultural movement—integrating more technology, wellness, and global collaborations. But at its core, we will always be about people—helping the next generation move not just with rhythm, but with purpose.”

Katrina Anne Johnson and Annabelle Mae McDonell crowned Binibining Pilipinas 2025

A licensed pharmacist and a pageant veteran were crowned Binibining Pilipinas 2025 during a televised competition on Sunday, June 15.

Licensed pharmacist Katrina Anne Johnson, 27, of Davao, won Bb. Pilipinas International 2025, while pageant veteran Annabelle Mae McDonell, 24, Iligan, was named Bb. Pilipinas Globe 2025.

Johnson will represent the Philippines at the 2026 Miss International pageant. On the other hand, McDonell will vie for the title of Miss Globe 2025.

This was the second time for Johnson to compete in the Binibining Pilipinas contest, having won first runner-up in 2023.

In her bio, Johnson described her parents as role models. Her interests include spending time with her loved ones and her dogs, sightseeing, cooking, make-up, as well as volunteering and meeting new people.

The beauty queen from Davao said that giving back to the community is something her mother made sure to instill in her childhood. 

As a medical professional, that love for service has driven me to resonate and empathize with my patients deeply. My advocacy revolves around healthcare and how it is, unfortunately, a privilege instead of a right here in the Philippines. I hope to spread awareness on the importance of healthcare in the overall betterment of our country, Johnson said recently.

McDonnell, 24, gained a following among local fans after finishing as the first runner-up in Miss Universe Philippines 2022. This achievement allowed her to compete in the inaugural Miss Charm in Vietnam the following year. She finished as the first runner-up, while Luma Russo from Brazil won the crown.

First runner-up honors at the 61st Binibining Pilipinas pageant went to Dalia Khattab of Las Pinas. At the same time, Kathleen Enid Espenido of Siargao was the 2nd runner-up.

Q&A portion

During the final question and answer portion, Johnson was asked: Lies told a thousand times become the truth. What is your reaction to this statement?

Johnson answered: I think social media and the internet are such a blessing to all of us because they allow us to create a community online with people from all around the world.But yes, fake news is a rampant issue nowadays, and to be honest with you, I think the best way that we can combat that is to make sure that we're educating people on how to discern information. We need to be aware. We need to regulate and make our online communities a safe space for everyone. Thank you, she ended.

Then McDonel was given the question: A woman was recently seen emerging from a drainage basin. If you can spend time with her, what insights or lessons do you wish to gain from the circumstances that led to her life condition?

She commented: Speaking as someone who experienced involuntary hunger and malnourishment at the age of 15, I say that I wish you never go hungry another night. I think that when you hit rock bottom, don't despair and don't use that as your identity, but rather use rock bottom as your launch pad. I have done exactly that. I have sold bread, I sold ukay-ukay clothes, and all the more rackets just to survive and support my family. You can do it as long as you believe in the beauty of your dreams

Out of 36 official candidates for this year's pageant, the selection was narrowed down to 14 contestants after the swimsuit and evening gown competitions.

Candidates who also finished in the Top 14 were Jercy Raine Cruz, Makati; Joanne Marie Thornley, Pampanga; Alyssa Mildred Villarina, Rizal; Maria Andrea Endicio, Quezon; Francesca Beatriz Alvalajon, Aklan; Jemille Justine Zosa, Mandaluyong; Anna Carres De Mesa, Batangas; Maria Alexandra Mata, Tarlac; Jerimi Nuqui, Caloocan; and Mia Betina Golosino, Malabon.

Johnson won Best In Evening Gown while Khattab was named Best In Swimsuit.

The winners of the evening gown and swimsuit categories were the most anticipated among the special awards during the pageant. In many cases, recipients of these special awards went on to become big winners in the competition.

Other winners of special awards were Johnson, Bb. Dunkin; Bb. Pizza Hut, Espenido; McDonell, Miss Philippine Airlines; Khattab, Bb. Urban Smiles; Cruz, Bb. Playtime; Cyril Reign Nulud, Bb. Friendship, and Alvalajon, Face of Binibini, and Best In National Costume.

Villarina, 24, is this year's winner of the Manila Bulletin Readers' Choice award. The special award was presented to Villarina by Barbie Atienza, Head of External Affairs, Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, and Badette Cunanan, Public Relations Manager, Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation.

She will receive a grand vacation and pampering package at the Manila Hotel worth P100,000 plus a one-year free subscription to the Manila Bulletin.

Cunanan described the turnout of voters for the Manila Bulletin Readers' Choice Award  this year as overwhelming. She also thanked the supporters of the Manila Bulletin in this pageant journey.

BINI marks anniversary with more shows abroad, surprises for Blooms

BINI has just concluded a successful month of May and is now diving headfirst into an even more exciting June as they celebrate their 4th anniversary. 

Fans can look forward to a variety of engaging activities and surprises, including new music, thrilling events, collectible merchandise, and, of course, fresh content from the group.

As part of the month-long celebration, fans of Blooms can look forward to eight exciting surprises specially curated for them. Following their global debut, BINI has performed at some of the most sought-after venues around the world. Highlights include their sold-out concert at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on May 18, as well as packed shows at the Ovo Arena in London on May 25, the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto on May 30, and The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City on May 31. More shows are planned for the future.

BINI is the first Filipino girl group to travel from city to city aboard a touring bus to reach BINIverse World Tour’s next 10 legs: The Theater at MGM National Harbor in Washington, DC (June 3); Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont (June 6); 713 Music Hall in Houston (June 9); The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Dallas (June 10); The Theater at Las Vegas Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas (June 13); Peacock Theater in Los Angeles (June 14); The Summit at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula (June 15); Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco (June 17); The Paramount Theatre in Seattle (June 20); and Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Center in Vancouver (June 21).

Kuh Ledesma speaks about the perseverance of a mother's love

Mother's Day has passed, but pop diva Kuh Ledesma believes that we should celebrate Mother's Day every day.

"One of God’s greatest blessings is the love of a mother for her child. It is selfless. It is enduring.  A mother is willing to sacrifice without expecting anything in return. She forgives without hesitation and prays constantly for her child," said Kuh as she prepares for a special post-Mother’s Day celebration, "Mamma Mia," at the Hacienda Isabella on May 31.

Kuh believes that a mother’s love is steadfast, especially when life becomes messy. It doesn’t give up, it doesn’t give in—it continues to hope and believe even when others no longer do. It is a love that stands the test of time, just like the bond between Kuh and her daughter, Isabella.

Kuh revealed that their journey hasn’t always been easy, adding that deep personal challenges marked the years. 

It came as an unexpected blow when Kuh’s marriage fell apart—a painful and turbulent season that deeply affected Isabella.

The trauma of witnessing her parents’ separation, twice, left lasting emotional and mental wounds. The mental anguish was further aggravated by prescribed psychotropic medication, which Isabella took for years.

Kuh said that it took time, faith, learning from the experiences of others with the same challenges who had overcome similar situations, and biblical counseling to realize that true healing would not come from medicine alone. 

It was through Kuh’s unwavering relationship with Jesus Christ that she found the strength to see her daughter through.

She would not believe that the psychotropic drugs were the solution to Isabella's healing, but in the power of prayer and holding on to the promises of God and God's faithfulness, and most of all, in Isabella's obedience to the word of God.

Kuh remained steadfast, prayerful, and immovable."It was in those hardest months that her love for Isabella proved deepest. In meals prepared with care, in conversations filled with God's word, in prayers—countless, unrelenting prayers," she said.

But most of all, in her decision to stay and endure the process and not let the psychotropic drugs and psychiatrists handle the situation, walking away would have been easier, but not beneficial. "And without a doubt, believing that God can do the impossible and that God is the true healer."

Today, Kuh continues to minister to other parents going through the same trials, offering comfort, wisdom, and the reminder that they are not alone. "That healing is possible. That God is very able."

"And by God's grace, after a long break, Isabella is once again sharing her incredible talent through her music and her art," Kuh added. 

With her recent very successful concert and return to the recording studio, Isabella isn’t just going back to what she used to do—she’s stepping into a new chapter with a deeper purpose, becoming who God designed her to be and using her God-given talent to the fullest.

Kuh also believes that there is no shame in sharing their story. "The process was not simple, but it was God's plan and purpose for both of them to learn how healing happens and how God can use their experience to encourage others who are going through similar challenges."

She believes in Isabella's tremendous talent in singing, thus she continues to mount concerts to encourage Isabella and unashamedly asks for the support of friends and family.

Behind that, moving up and moving forward is Kuh—the mother whose perseverance, relentless prayers, and unshakable faith have been the anchor. "Sometimes with force, sometimes with tears, but always with hope. Always with love."

Citing 1 Corinthians 13:70-8, Kuh mentioned: "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

On Instagram, Rachel described Hajji "a happy, optimistic man who valued having a good, comfortable life, yes, but more importantly, he prioritized providing for his partner, mother and children." 

Rachel also said his father was a professional entertainer who performed at two more events before he was admitted to the hospital for surgery. 

"2 months of hospital stays and spending time with him at his home, and I was still not prepared as I helplessly watched him breathe his final breath," she wrote on April 23.

Hajji, 70, has passed away after a battle with colon cancer. As of April 24 at 3:30 a.m., the family has not released any details regarding Hajji's wake and funeral.

Beloved dad and son

Hajji's demise was confirmed by Girlie Rodis, the talent management for the Alejandro family, on April 22.  The full statement:

"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito 'Hajji' T. Alejandro.

"At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time.

"To God be the glory. - Alejandro family."

'We craved his company'

"He never got old.

"What happens when the brightest star in a galaxy dies? My Dad was our sun and we were the planets, orbiting around him, basking in his warmth and light. As kids, we tagged along to all his activities, be it shows, rehearsals, basketball games — it didn’t matter what it was. We would fall asleep at Dolphy’s house if he was there for an all-night poker game. There was nowhere else we would rather be than by his side because every minute in his presence was fun.

"Even as adults, we craved his company even as we got married and went about our own lives. I hung on to his every word about politics, financial investments or the latest joke he planned on including in his next concert with the Hitmakers. He loved to make people laugh as much as he loved to sing and dance.

"My Dad was a happy, optimistic man who valued having a good, comfortable life, yes, but more importantly, he prioritized providing for his partner, mother and children. And his way of doing that from the time he had me at the young age of 19, was through his golden singing voice, which is why regardless of how he was feeling, he never cancelled shows.

"Even when he was already in considerable pain, he performed in 2 more events before he was admitted into the hospital for surgery. For Dad, every show is a blessing and performing for you all is our highest calling as singers.

"2 months of hospital stays and spending time with him at his home and I was still not prepared as I helplessly watched him breathe his final breath.

"What happens to those a star of this magnitude leaves behind? I don’t have answers for that yet as I struggle to grasp living in a universe without our Daddwaps. But I intend to make him proud in everything I do, to live by his code of honor and goodness, to perform for you all with everything I’ve got and leave it all on the stage every single time.

"I will now just be singing and dancing with Dad in my dreams…"

The Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) has officially selected the candidates for the 2025 Binibining Pilipinas pageant during a final closed-door screening at the New Frontier Theater on April 2.

The roster of 36 new Binibinis features a blend of fresh faces and pageant veterans, each bringing unique stories and inspiring advocacies.

The official candidates of the 61st Binibining Pilipinas pageant are: 

The latest batch of Binibinis is carefully selected by a panel composed of the reigning Binibining Pilipinas 2024 queens and the BPCI Executive Committee.

Now part of the exclusive and legendary Binibini sisterhood, the candidates will compete in the grand 61st edition of the country's most prestigious beauty pageant to earn the right to represent the Philippines on the international stage.

As of 2024, there are two official titles in Binibining Pilipinas: Binibining Pilipinas International and Binibining Pilipinas Globe. The winners compete in Miss International and Miss Globe. 

Recent rumors indicate that the country's most prestigious beauty pageant will introduce new titles. The BPCI is expected to make an official announcement soon.

Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz, 73, revealed she has been in a relationship with a younger man for 28 years.

During an interview at the press conference of the horror movie "Untold" in San Juan City on March 31, Gloria identified her partner of 28 years as Michael O. De Jesus, President and CEO of the Development Bank of the Philippines.

Asked to describe their relationship, Gloria said: "It's super good!"

"He's younger than me. But he and my former husband, we used to go out together. Sabi ko, I can handle two guys at the same time. Always open your options."

Gloria added: "He became old na rin. He's a serious banker."

The former beauty queen, who will turn 74 in April, said the younger man usually adjusts in a relationship if the woman is older. "He became older na rin. He became mature."

In 1986, Gloria married businessman Gabriel Daza III. Years later, they separated. Gabriel passed away in 1994, but Gloria said she never had any regrets or trauma about marrying when she was younger.

"We're very good. We had too many friends. But we parted as friends. And he became a better father. My former husband looks very much like Belle (Isabelle Daza) and Ava. I am very close to my in-laws. I don't have any real trauma," Gloria also said.

On sex life, Gloria said: It's good! Jellytime! I'm just kidding. That's my daughters' business." Jellytime is a safe and gentle all-natural water-based personal lubricant.

Gloria commented on other female celebrities whose relationship with younger men did not work out: "They should have enjoyed it. But in Filipino life, the guy has always to be the boss. He should be financially and spiritually responsible for you. I don't know their style."
