Phivolcs located the earthquake's epicenter at 12 kilometers (km) southwest of Jipapad, Eastern Samar.

It was initially recorded at 4.8-magnitude in San Jose de Buan, Eastern Samar before it was revised to 5.0-magnitude.

The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 37 km, was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs' instruments said it was "slightly felt" at Intensity II in Villareal, Samar; Dulag, Leyte; and Mapanas, Northern Samar,  while it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Basey, Samar.

Phivolcs said it does not expect damage to property, but aftershocks may occur.

This Valentine's Day, PCW advocates self-love, setting boundaries for flourishing partnerships.

How many times have you set aside things that may hurt or degrade you in the name of "love"?

That love inside you may be so pure that you feel compelled to sacrifice not just many things but also a significant part of yourself.

However, if it is already altering your values and taking away your aspirations, can you honestly still call it "love"?

Perhaps there were times when you felt insecure or frustrated about the love you deserve, pushing you to unconditionally exert all you've got and leading you to give more and more from an almost empty cup.

However, as love beautifully abounds through the magic of fulfillment and satisfaction, it still should not overshadow the power of freedom, independence, and self-respect as suggested by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW).

On this special day dedicated to love and those who cherish it, PCW reminds women to empower themselves by fostering "self-love," a principle upon which the treatment of their partners should be based.

"By nurturing their self-love, self-worth, and self-esteem, women can navigate romantic relationships with confidence, resilience, and authenticity, ensuring that they can draw the line when they are disrespected, degraded, devalued, or abused," adds PCW.

 Tips for single ladies

It is noted that women who have not yet found love prioritize their well-being.

PCW emphasizes the necessity of self-care and caution when choosing a partner, urging individuals to observe how their potential partner treats them and others.

"Never ignore red flags or tolerate behavior that undermines your self-worth," advises PCW.

'Controlling' partner

The Inter-Agency Council on Violence Against Women and their Children (IACVAWC) identifies 'controlling behavior' as a sign of a potentially unhealthy relationship.

'Green flags?'

Moreover, IACVAWC warns that initial positive qualities in a partner may eventually transform into negative traits or behaviors due to various influences.

'Abusive' relationships

In light of abuses in some relationships, PCW emphasizes that there is no excuse for such behavior, and assures women of their right to feel safe, respected, and unconditionally loved.

Under the Republic Act 9262, also known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) Act, PCW outlines various forms of violence against women (VAW), including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse.

PCW acknowledges different reasons why some women may not recognize such 'red flags,' but reiterates that they are not defined by the abuse they endure.

PCW emphasizes the need for women to embrace their strength and resilience 'to break free from the chains of an unhealthy relationship.'

Lastly, the national commission notes that a healthy relationship should not define one's happiness but rather complement it.

Flood warnings up in parts of VisMin; 'amihan' to bring rains over Luzon

BY LIZST TORRES ABELLO

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday, Feb. 11 said flash floods or landslides are still possible in parts of Visayas and Mindanao, while light rains may occur in most parts of Luzon.

PAGASA said Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Region will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms caused by the easterlies or the warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

It continued to advise the public to be vigilant against flash floods or landslides that may occur in these areas in times of moderate to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, weather specialist Grace Castañeda said the northeast monsoon or locally known as "amihan," became "slightly strong," and is affecting parts of Luzon.

Castañeda said amihan may bring cloudy skies with light rains to Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, Kalinga, Apayao, Aurora, and Quezon.

"Bahagya muling lumakas ang northeast monsoon o amihan at sa kasalukuyan ay nakakaapekto ito sa malaking bahagi ng Luzon kung saan ngayong araw ay magdadala ito ng maulap na kalangitan at mataas na tyansa ng mga mahihinang pag-ulan at pag-ambon lalong lalo na sa may silangang bahagi ng Luzon (The northeast monsoon slightly re-strengthened and currently, it affects huge part of Luzon where it brings cloudy skies and high chance of light rains and rain showers especially to the east portion of Luzon)," she said.

In Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will prevail caused by amihan.  Moreover, PAGASA said the rest of Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies or localized thunderstorms.

It also advised the public to be wary of flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms.

PAGASA issues sunspot warning: 'Never directly look at the sun'

BY LIZST TORRES ABELLO

Sunspots or "dark patches," caused by "concentrated magnetic fields" were observed on the sun, an event that plays an important role in the solar cycle, which occurs every 11 years.

(PAGASA)

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday, Feb. 11 warned the public to "never" directly look at the sun without protection, as the sunspots can cause "serious harm" to the eyes, which may lead to permanent damage like blindness.

"Always use approved solar filters designed for safe solar viewing," said PAGASA.

PAGASA explained  the sunspots may be "worrisome," yet still connotated it as a "natural aspect" of the actions of the sun.

"This cycle, driven by the solar dynamo, governs the Sun's alternating periods of heightened and reduced activity," it said.

PAGASA also noted that sunspots can affect technological systems including satellites and communication networks, however, the impacts are amenable.

"Thus, it's important to recognize sunspots and the solar cycle as regular phenomena, enriching our understanding of solar dynamics without causing undue concern," it said.

PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda said on Wednesday morning, Jan. 31 that the LPA has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical depression or entering the Philippine area of responsibility but its trough or extension will still bring significant rains.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will be felt in Northern Mindanao, South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, General Santos, Caraga, Davao Region, Central Visayas, Biliran, Samar, Eastern Samar, and Southern Leyte.

PAGASA warned that moderate to heavy rains may cause flash floods or landslides in these areas.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon, locally known as "amihan," may bring cloudy skies with light rains to Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, Bicol Region, and Northern Samar.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will be felt throughout Metro Manila, Western Visayas, and the rest of Luzon.

The rest of Mindanao will also have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by the trough of the LPA  T he public was also warned that severe thunderstorms may cause flash floods or landslides in the affected areas.

Meteor showers to be observed in December — PAGASA

BY LIZST TORRES ABELLO

Geminid and Ursid meteor showers will light up the December skies, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its monthly astronomical diary.

PAGASA said the Geminid meteor shower will be active from Dec. 4 to 17, with the peak occurring on Dec. 15.

The Geminids may produce up to 150 meteors per hour during its peak activity, which will occur at 3 a.m. on Dec. 15.

"The meteor shower will reach its peak near the time of the new moon, presenting minimal interference from moonlight," PAGASA said.

It said when the constalletion, Gemini or the "twins" rises above the eastern horizon, Geminids will be visible at 7:13 p.m.

"It most likely to put on spectacular displays at around 2 a.m. when its radiant point is highest in the sky," PAGASA added.

Meanwhile, the Ursid meteor shower will be active from Dec. 17 to 26, with the peak occurring on Dec 23.

Phivolcs observed the lava flow at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 22.

Meanwhile, the Mayon Volcano Network had recorded one volcanic earthquake and 111 rockfall events on Thursday, Nov. 23, it said.

Phivolcs said the lava still flows at approximately 3.4 kilometers along Bonga gully, 2.8 kilometers along Mi-isi gully, and 1.1 kilometers along Basud gully.

Moreover, the volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission had an average of 1,623 tons per day as of Nov. 22.

Phivolcs advised the public to refrain entering the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and be vigilant against the risks from pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, lahars, and sediment-laden streamflows among other volcanic hazards.

Hazardous eruption may still be expected in Mayon Volcano as Alert Level 3 is maintained, which means that it is currently "in a relatively high level of unrest,” it added.

PAGASA said Bicol Region, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to shear line—an area where the cold northeasterly winds and warm easterlies converge.

The public is warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rains in the affected areas.

Due to the amihan, cloudy skies with light rains will prevail over Cagayan Valley and Quezon, while partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will affect Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.

PAGASA said the rest of Mindanao will also have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers caused by localized thunderstorms.

The public is advised that flash floods or landslides may also occur during severe thunderstorms.
