Keep your guard up vs Covid-19—expert

BY ANALOU DE VERA

A medical expert reminded Filipinos to continue practicing the different layers of protection as the Philippines is once again experiencing an upward trend in Covid-19 infections.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante said that the pandemic is not yet over.

In a recent statement, the Department of Health (DOH) said that Covid-19 cases nationally “show continued increase with reported cases in the recent week at 1,533 cases per day as of May 10, which is a 75 percent increase from last week.”

On Sunday, May 14, Solante said that this current rise in cases “is expected and will be the new normal wherein we see periods of increase [in] cases.”

The public should “not to be complacent because anyone can get the infection whether vaccinated or unvaccinated because of the ability of [the] current subvariant to evade our immune response.”

He advised the public to update their Covid-19 vaccination, particularly the general population who are already eligible to receive the second booster shot.

Solante also highlighted the importance of wearing face masks.

“We should also advise the public to wear face mask[s] in high risk areas,” he said.

“Face mask is encourage[d] but not mandatory, and should be worn for those with high risk population to develop severe Covid such as elderly population, immunocompromised and those with comorbidities,”  he added.

He also emphasized the importance of Covid-19 testing and isolation.

“For those who are symptomatic— with cough, sore throat, and those with fever, they are encouraged to be tested for Covid so that if positive, they should isolate themselves to prevent transmission,” said Solante.

“For those in the high risk population who are symptomatic, they should consult their doctors for proper treatment using antivirals,” he added.

by Analou de Vera, MB

Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) (MANILA BULLETIN)

Health facilities can still file their application for renewal of accreditation with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) until the end of this month.

“Please be informed that PhilHealth will extend the period of filing of application for renewal of accreditation for CY 2023 of health facilities until Jan. 31, 2023,” PhilHealth said in a statement on Monday, Jan. 9.

This move is aimed at ensuring “continuous access to quality health services by all Filipinos,” it said.

“Only applications with the complete documentary requirements submitted to the respective PhilHealth Regional Offices on or before the said period shall be accepted,” it noted.

“Applications received for renewal of accreditation beyond this period shall result into a gap in accreditation,” it added.

The state health insurer said that health facilities may coordinate with PhilHealth regional offices if they have clarifications.

Beware of fake medicines—health expert

by Analou de Vera

Medicines (File Photo)

An infectious disease expert reminded the public to remain vigilant against fake medicines as this may cause an adverse effect on one’s health.

“Ang magiging epekto niyan sa katawan talagang hindi maganda. So, kailangan talaga natin na suriin (The effect of that on the body is not good. So, we really need to check),” said infectious disease expert Dr. Rontgene Solante during a public briefing on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

“Unang-una hindi natin alam kung mas mataas ang mga adverse reaction or reaction ng mga gamot na ‘to dahil hindi natin alam kung ano ang quality (First of all, we don’t know the possible adverse reactions that can happen [if you take these] drugs because we don’t know its quality),” he added.

Solante advised the public to only purchase medicines from “authorized and reputable drug stores.”

He urged the public to be extra cautious when buying medicines online.

“More importantly siguro we discourage online unless the online site na iyan ay authorized government or private na mga healthcare delivery drugs or drug stores (we discourage the online purchase [of medicines] unless the online site is authorized by the government or these are private healthcare delivery drugs or drug stores),” he said.

PAGASA: Several areas in Mindanao to experience moderate to heavy rains due to ‘Queenie’

Published November 1, 2022, 9:08 AM

by Analou de Vera

Tropical Storm Queenie (DOST-PAGASA)

Tropical Storm Queenie will bring moderate to heavy rains in some parts of Mindanao on Tuesday, Nov. 1, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Queenie was last spotted 490 kilometers east of Davao City, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center with gustiness of up to 80 km/h, the PAGASA said in its latest weather update.

“Tonight through tomorrow: Moderate to heavy rains possible over Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands,” the weather bureau reported.

“Light to moderate with at times heavy rains possible over Eastern Visayas, Davao Oriental, and the rest of Caraga Region,” it added.

PAGASA said that flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, “especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall.”

“The hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals is not ruled out over the eastern portion of Caraga and in some areas in Eastern Visayas today (Tuesday). Per latest track and intensity forecast, the highest wind signal that will likely be hoisted is Wind Signal No. 1,” it said.

Queenie is “forecast to track generally west northwestward to northwestward” on Tuesday “before turning north northwestward” on Wednesday, Nov. 2, “while over the sea east of Caraga-Davao Region area,” PAGASA said.

The weather bureau said that Queenie “may weaken into a tropical depression” on Tuesday, Nov. 1, “due to increasingly unfavorable conditions. Further weakening into a low pressure area is likely by Thursday, possibly earlier.”

On the other hand, 89 out of 121 provinces, highly urbanized cities, and independent component cities were placed under Alert Level 1, the DOH said.

The DOH has observed a decline in the country’s case trend and hospital admissions.

“This means that our key indicators, such as the healthcare utilization rate (HCUR), are showing improvements. We attribute this development to every Filipino who continues to cooperate with our Covid-19 response,” said DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire.

“But while we see a continuous decline in case and admission trends, we must remember that deescalation does not mean that the battle with Covid-19 is already over. These current numbers are not permanent; we must all work together to maintain these low numbers,” she added.

PH short of 106,000 nursing staff—DOH

by Analou de Vera, Manila Bulletin

Nurses in PPEs

The Philippines is currently facing a shortage of healthcare workers, particularly of nurses, the Department of Health (DOH) bared on Thursday, Sept. 29

“Ngayon, ang nakikita natin talagang kakulangan would be our nurses (Now, what we are seeing is that we lack nurses),” said DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire in a press briefing.

“We have a shortage or a gap of around 106,000 para mapunuan natin yung mga facilities natin (We have a shortage or a gap of around 106,000 so that we can fill our facilities) all over the country, both public and private,” she added.

The country is also struggling with shortage of doctors, especially in far-flung areas, said Vergeire.

Aside from doctors and nurses, Vergeire also noted that the Philippines is also in need of pharmacists, radiologic technologists, medical technologists, midwives, physical therapists, and dentists.

“If you talk about shortages in healthcare workers, marami tayong shortage ngayon (we have a lot of shortages now),” she said.

Migration

Among the reasons why there is a shortage of medical workers in the Philippines would be the migration of healthcare workers, said Vergeire.

Vergeire said that the DOH wants to maintain the current deployment cap of healthcare workers. Currently, the government has set a 7,000 cap on the deployment of medical workers overseas.

“Kung kami po ang tatanungin sa Department of Health, we would like to sustain and maintain this cap na wala na pang magiincrease pa sa mga naipapadala nating mga healthcare workers natin abroad (If the DOH is to be asked, we would like to sustain and maintain this cap so that there will be no increase in the number of healthcare workers to be sent abroad),” she said.

The DOH is also coordinating with the Department of Migrant Workers and the Department of Labor and Employment regarding possible “incentives” for healthcare workers in order “ for them not to leave the country.”

Vergeire said that they are also pushing bills in Congress that seek to improve the conditions of medical workers in the Philippines.

Plantilla positions

Vergeire also urged medical professionals to apply in the plantilla positions being offered by the DOH.

“We have around 624 plantilla positions for nurses, 1,332 midwives plantilla [positions], and we have around 63 dentists na kailangan natin (that we need),” she said.

“We are calling our nurses here in the country, midwives in the country, our dentists, and other healthcare professionals, we have vacant plantilla positions,” she said.

“Kayo po ay makipag-ugnayan lamang sa aming DOH-HR Bureau para maiproseso natin ang inyong mga papel (Just contact our DOH-HR Bureau so we can process your papers),” she furthered.

The DOH is doing several measures to encourage health workers for them “to stay and work here in our country,” said Vergeire.

“Kailangan po namin ang tulong niyo sa ngayon, para po mag continue ang operations ng bawat facility dito sa ating bansa (We need your help right now, so that the operations of every facility in our country can continue),” she appealed.
