Cayetano to Taguig youth leaders: Enable people to do what is right

Leaders do not just tell people what is wrong, they also enable them to do what is right.

This was Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s encouragement to Sanggunian ng Kabataan (SK) Chairpersons of Taguig who gathered on Thursday night for dinner and fellowship with leaders of the city.

Focusing on principles, Cayetano urged the young leaders to stick to what they know is right in order to serve their constituents well.

“Why principles? We can debate on opinion, we can debate religion, but we cannot debate on principles. As leaders, we cannot only tell people kung ano ang mali, we have to provide them kung ano yung tama,” he said.

The gathering, held in Barangay Hagonoy, was attended by City of Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano along with barangay chairpersons from the first and second districts as well as representatives from the EMBO barangays.

The senator called on the youth in attendance to practice three principles: victory, vision, and value. Starting with victory, he stressed the importance of defining success on one's own terms.

“You cannot have victory kung wala kang parameter, sukatan, o measurement of what victory is,” he said.

Transitioning to the principle of vision, Cayetano pointed out the vital connection between a clear vision and the attainment of victory and success.

“When you have a vision, lilinaw sa inyo y’ung victory at saka success,” he said.

“You might not be confident about yourself, but when you’re confident about your vision, when you value yourself, other people will see that,” he added.

Drawing from his own faith, Cayetano then talked about recognizing the inherent value of every person, reminding the young leaders of their significance in the eyes of God.

He also encouraged them to embrace their worth and treat others with respect and kindness, reminding them that Jesus gave His life for everyone because He values each and every person.

“If you think you’re worthless, think twice. God already said, ‘You are worth dying for,’” he said.

Eyeing to continue the engagement with the young leaders, Cayetano invited them to monthly talks on principles as an avenue to foster leadership development and community service.

He also left the young leaders with a call to action, urging them to lead with purpose, courage, and dedication to serving their community, guided by the grace of the Lord. ###

Hey there sports fan, It has been a week of significant numbers in sports. There's the most talked-about 51 points in basketball in a long while. There is the three-point record chase, which is littered with numerical trivia (Like, do you know who is No. 3 on the all-time list of three-pointers made? Answer below). There's lucky 13. There's even the "Death Five." Perhaps the most defining numbers in sports the past week were the ones that popped up alongside the win-loss records of teams in the Premier Volleyball League and the UAAP women's volleyball tournament. It's the points system that was used to break ties in those two tournaments. And boy, did those points make a difference. Ask PLDT coach Rald Ricafort. His team tied Creamline at fourth and fifth places in the ongoing PVL All-Filipino Cup, but the team lost out on the chase for the last semifinals ticket by a single point, 24-23.  Understand that the High Speed Hitters didn't even need to convert any of their three losses to wins to earn the needed points to boot out the defending champions. Had they forced deciding sets in defeats to Chery Tiggo and Cignal toward the tailend of their preliminaries calendar, they would have made the Last 4. Same goes for the UAAP. National U and season surprise package University of Santo Tomas fnished with identical 12-2 (win-loss) records and traditionally, UST would have gotten the top seed because it defeated NU in three sets while the Lady Bulldogs' win over the Tigresses in their next encounter lasted four sets. But because the points system was applied, NU finished at No. 1 and UST dropped to No. 2. The significance? The difference in positions meant the Tigresses will have to battle defending champion La Salle in the semifinals, albeit with twice-to-beat protection, while NU gets to take on No. 4 Far Eastern U,

It was the second straight win for the Flying Titans in this round-robin semifinal phase, following up their five-set triumph over the Creamline Cool Smashers the other day.

Royse Tubino went full blast at the attack line and unleashed 17 points including crucial kills late in the third set that anchored Choco Mucho to the much-needed victory.

“Yung mindset talaga namin dito, kailangang maipanalo namin kaagad para mataas yung makuha naming points dito sa semis,” said Tubino, who highlighted her performance with 15 attacks and two blocks.

Sisi Rondina also waxed hot for the Flying Titans by scattering all her 18 points on kills apart from managing 14 digs.

The Flying Titans encountered stiff resistance late in the third after sisters Eya and EJ Laure conspired for three straight points to trim the Crossovers’ deficit from 23-19 to 23-22.

Tubino stopped the bleeding with her own quick attack to bring Choco Mucho at matchpoint, 24-22, but Eya was not yet done, retaliating with her own down-the-line spike to keep Chery Tiggo afloat, 24-23.  But a costly service error from Ponggay Gaston that went long ended the match in favor of the Flying Titans.

Choco Mucho also shackled Chery Tiggo with its tight defense, limiting Eya and EJ to single-digit productions with only Cza Carandang finishing in twin figures with 10 points.

The Flying Titans also took advantage of the Crossovers’ weak serves, receiving the ball well and executing a variety of plays with Mars Alba finishing with 14 excellent sets.

Choco Mucho hopes to sweep the semis and advance to the championship round on Sunday, May 5, when it squares off with Petro Gazz at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Chery Tiggo, which absorbed its second straight defeat, tries to keep its slim chance of making into the finals when it faces Creamline on the same day.
