The reason for our hope

By Fr. Roy Cimagala *

AS we approach the end of the Easter season when we celebrate the truth of our faith that Christ is alive and has gained victory over sin and death, we are reminded of the presence and crucial role of the Holy Spirit who continues Christ’s presence and redemptive work in us till the end of time.

“When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,” Christ said, “he will testify to me.” (Jn 15,26) With these words, Christ was reassuring his apostles, and us, that he would continue to be with us, despite his death, resurrection and ascension into heaven.

Later on, he warned his apostles, and us, that we should not worry even as we continue to have troubles and suffering in this world, since as long as we are with him, everything would be taken care of.

“I have told you this so that you may not fall away,” he said. “They will expel you from the synagogues. In fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.” (Jn 16,1-2)

Given the fact that our condition on earth is that of a pilgrim, we should be strong in this virtue of hope that would enable us to be always on the move toward our ultimate, spiritual and supernatural goal without unnecessarily getting entangled with our human and temporal affairs, let alone, our unavoidable troubles here on earth.

Hope is first of all not just a virtue that we produce, cultivate or keep ourselves. It is first of all a gift from God, given to us in abundance. It is the gift of Christ himself who, by the Holy Spirit, is made present in us through his words, his sacraments, his Church. All we have to do is to correspond to this wonderful reality as vigorously as possible.

That is why we need to be most mindful of the truths of our faith, giving time to meditate on them and to make them sink in our very consciousness. We have to be wary of our tendency to be carried away by our earthly concerns, no matter how legitimate they are. For again, as the gospel would say, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mk 8,36)

It’s important that just like in that management style called MBO (Management by objective), we have to have a clear vision of our ultimate goal and make it the strongest desire of our life, so that we avoid getting entangled unnecessarily with the ups and downs and the drama of life.

This, of course, will require some significant effort, because nowadays people are getting too hooked in their earthly, temporal affairs. Hope gives one the conviction that God has the last word, goodness has the last say. It reassures everyone that it is all worthwhile to suffer a little or a lot in life as long as one does not lose sight of his eternal goal.

Hope gives one a deep sense of peace and joy, and an abiding sense of confidence, regardless of how things play out in one’s life, since life always has more to offer than what we can expect or handle.

When we seem to be overwhelmed by trials, challenges, tasks, pressures that can come anytime, I believe the attitude to have and the reaction to make is to be calm, pray hard, and while we do all we can, we have to learn to live a certain sense of abandonment in the hands of God.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN LIFE?

What counts: Faith? Hope? Charity? Very often I ask myself: What's the sense of doing like and like that? What's the real meaning of life?

Nearly every morning, we get up and hurry to work. We see so many remorseful faces of people as if there are full of problems that a smile to them is like a sunbeam trapped behind the black clouds. Yes, sure, in these pandemic times, many of us might have already forgotten to smile.

Whether in good or bad times, our day at the workplace or in the home office goes on with our colleagues, employees or employers. And leisure time is there, no matter how great or small our zest for life is.

So, we live our life in a logical sequence: day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year.  Every day is a cycle of life: every morning is like a birth and every night like a death.

But how do we live our life? Often we can notice people living an easy-go-lucky way of life. Others feel good and satisfied when they can make someone else's life hell. Others have to escape with their bare life while still others experience life-and-death-struggle.

What counts for us? Success? Power? Or money? Is it contentment? Peace on earth and in our souls? Really zest for life?

If I observe people who really choose to be unhappy even without any reason at all, I feel sad. Being unhappy makes life miserable. Whatever happens around me, I don't like to be unhappy. For me, the meaning of happiness is to try to manage life even with problems and difficulties. Easier said than done! I know, I know.

The Bible states that love is greater than both faith and hope. We couldn't live our lives without faith or hope: without faith, we cannot know the God of love; without hope, we would not endure in our faith until we meet him face to face. Thus, love is the virtue upon which all Christian faith and hope now stand.

Dinah Maria Mulock Craik (20 April 1826 – 12 October 1887) was an English novelist and poet. Allow me to quote her, "When faith and hope fail, as they do sometimes, we must try charity, which is love in action".

Ano ang mahalaga? Paniniwala? Pag-asa? O kaya pagbibigayan at pagtutulungan?

Endure, persevere with faith and hope

By Fr. Roy Cimagala *

GIVEN the fact that we have already been warned by Christ

that the world will end badly and that in our life, we will always

have some trouble, (cfr. Lk 21,12-19) we should be properly prepared

for this condition in our life by learning how to suffer with faith,

hope and optimism, how to endure and persevere in the drama of our

life.

We have to remember that if Christ could not help but had to

offer his life to save us, how can we think that our life and the

world in general would take a different path? Remember Christ telling

his disciples, “A servant is not greater than his master. If they

persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” (Jn 15,20) But let’s

always keep in mind his assurance, “In this world you will have

trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (Jn 16,33)

Let’s just have to learn how to suffer, always with Christ,

that is, with faith, hope and optimism, convinced that all these

troubles will always be for the good. It would also help a lot if we

maintain a sporting spirit in life with a good and healthy sense of

humor.

To be sure, we can manage to find joy in suffering only if

we identify ourselves with Christ. With Christ, suffering becomes an

act of selfless love that can take on anything. Only in him can we

find joy and meaning in suffering. With him, suffering loses its

purely negative and painful character, and assumes the happy salvific

character.

We need to process this truth of our faith thoroughly,

always asking for God’s grace and training all our powers and

faculties to adapt to this reality. That’s why Christ told us clearly

that if we want to follow him, we simply have to deny ourselves, carry

the cross and follow him. There’s no other formula, given our wounded

human condition.

This self-denial and carrying of Christ’s cross will enable

us to see that suffering is obviously the consequence of all our

sins—ours and those of others. Embracing suffering the way Christ

embraced his cross unites our suffering with that of Christ.

For us to have this conviction, we really need to deepen and

strengthen our faith which will lead us to have an unwavering hope

that despite whatever, everything would just turn out right.

With faith and hope, we can manage to endure anything and to

persevere, because as St. Paul told us once: “God, who began the good

work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished

on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Phil 1,6)

The Pauline words somehow tell us that the secret of

perseverance is our strong faith in God, in his omnipotent and

merciful providence that can always make do with whatever situation we

may find ourselves in any given moment.

We have to see to it that we keep that faith alive and

burning. And to make that faith vibrant, we need to keep ourselves

always in love. It’s love that keeps our faith going. It should be a

love that goes beyond good intentions, sweet words and nice feelings.

It has to be expressed in deeds.

One clear manifestation of an operative love that nourishes

our faith that in turn enables us to persevere and to be faithful to

the end is the practice of a daily examination of conscience. Such

practice will help us to be always vigilant and properly focused and

directed.

ARE WE LOSING FAITH AND HOPE ALREADY?

When I listen and lock around, I would have to answer this question with a big yes. Several friends of mine started talking with me and mentioned the good old days. Yes, those were the days my friend! Well, we all know: times have changed drastically. More natural disasters, more wars that hardly anyone speaks of anymore, and a pandemic that I have purposely put at the end of this list.

To be or not to be. Sein oder nicht sein. Shakespeare. To say it clearly: without faith and hope, we're really nothing.

Faith is belief; believe in us, in our works, talents and our personalities. We should also believe in our parents - or much better, in our whole family including the black sheep, which can be found everywhere.

We should believe in our friends, even if it seems to become very difficult nowadays. The pandemic kills many friendships.

Please remember, my dear readers: without faith  and hope will we reach the rock bottom. Don't say, it's a likely story.

The German poet Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1815) has mentioned in his drama "Maria Stuart": "Even the word might be dead, but faith keeps it alive!" Chapter I of Second Thessalonians gives encouragement to all Christians, who were undergoing persecution for or because of their faith. Yes, faith is really not everybody's thing, or "not everyone has faith".

"If I have faith, that can move mountains" (First Corinthians 13,2).

Faith is a tantamount to convincing and conviction. Richard Wagner (German classical composer and poet, 1813-1883) found the following lyric: "Blessed are those people, who know how to live their life in humility and faith."

So, let's even continue believing in our governments or the institution church. Faith means also a belief specially in a revealed religion. Faith is trust or reliance. Faith is indeed a pledged word. Yes, I know. Hope too.

People without faith and hope  in themselves cannot or will never survive. Worth to think about it!

Government services bring hope to Mandaya Tribe in far-flung Sitio Uduan

Davao de Oro Province--- “Naibot gyud ang mga tunok nga among gidala-dala nga mura nag tag upat ka dangaw” said Rubelyn Kilam, a 38 year-old housewife when asked how she felt when government services started to reach her remote village, wherein for years, she was hopeless as their community resides in the farthest spot of New Bataan.

Rubelyn is among the estimated 316 individuals who resides in Uduan, Manurigao of New Bataan. The said sitio holds 43 households with 63 families in total who relies mainly on farming corn, kamote, and abaca for living. With Manurigao identified as one of the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) in the province, reaching the place is not an easy exploit.

With elevated grounds blessed with fertile soil and a good climate for crops, Uduan always has a good harvest. But way back then, they always have trouble exporting their local products in town due to the road situation. Even the residents before cannot easily access proper education, health-care services and other emergencies as the path to the capital deprives them. “Lisod kaayo ang dalan sauna, ang amung agi-an kanang mga gamot sa kahoy ug daghan pa gyud kaayog mga mananap. Masayang lang ang amuang mga produkto ug mahimomg walay bili. Usahay naay mga aksidente ug mangamatay nalang sa dalan tungod kay dili madali ug dala sa hospital.” said Rubelyn.

Now that the national and the provincial government of Davao de Oro continue to roll out its programs under the “Bayanihan 4Ps+” blueprint of governance headed by Governor Jayvee Tyron L. Uy, Sitio Uduan of Manurigao already have an easy access to the capital of New Bataan due to the continuing road infrastructure projects of the PLGU that targets the uplands.

Road infrastructures open a variety of opportunities and brings out the best qualities and potentials of a certain place. This opens an avenue towards progress in tourism, commerce and strengthen one of the golden pillars of the province, its agriculture. It also brings government services and programs closer to the people.

As one of the partners of PLGU-Davao de Oro in promoting sustainability and upholding lives of its constituents especially in GIDA areas, TESDA-Davao de Oro thru the Davao National Agricultural School and Regional Training Center will upskill a total of 135 Mandaya Scholars in Uduan Manurigao through various trainings that will help to them to acquire livelihood skills that fits their community. Being the lead agency of Poverty Reduction, Livelihood, and Employment Cluster (PRLEC), TESDA Secretary Isidro S. Lapeña, also visited Uduan, Manurigao last January 27, 2021 during the launch of the Capability Building cum PICO Hydro Power Project Groundbreaking. Together with Sec. Lapeña are heads of the National Government Agencies such as DSWD, DOST, DAR, DTI, DA, DOLE, DepEd, DENR, NCIP, LBP, AFP, PNP, NORDECO, Mayor Geraldford Balbin of New Bataan and Vice Governor Maricar Zamora who represented Governor Uy. The Department of Agriculture also donated corn seeds to the residents, while Vice Governor Maricar Zamora handed out hygiene kits.

“Nalipay mi nga niabot and programa dire sa TESDA ug sa gobyerno, kay wala gyud mi niasa nga maabtan mi ug serbisyo tungod sa kalayo sa amung lugar, imposible kaayo nga makita mi dire. Karun nagpasalamat mi nga nay training diri nga haum ug magamit namo sa amuang lugar.”said Rubelyn.

The daylight starts to unfold the greatness of Manurigao. Once a remote-area that has no access to government services now benefits and begins to develop the community. With the help of the provincial government in partnership with National Government Agencies, sooner, remote-areas will unleash their dormant treasures. (Jasteen P. Choosing To Believe

Choosing to Believe

Like Many Things in Life, Hope too is a Choice

By MIKE MEDLIN, Manila

Just weeks after two bombings in Davao City and intense fighting in western Mindanao, 104.3 The Edge is challenging the community to take hope.  Starting Tuesday morning the air team will encourage believers in Davao to accept that the hope they want and desperately need for their city begins with them.

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.-II Chronicles 7:14
Hope & healing is our prayer for Davao and the nation.  Consider the recent headlines...
  • Hundreds of Millions of Pesos Stolen in Political Pork Barrel
  • HIV Infection Spread for Asia is the Fastest in the Philippines
  • Youngest Confirmed Prostitute in Davao City Age 9
In times like these, hope and belief are in short supply and that's why the positive message of the Edge Davao is so critical.
Tomorrow morning, I'll be flying out for the week to join the team in Davao for their next fundraiser.  As a listener supported station, the Edge Davao is blazing a new trail for Christian media ministry in the Philippines.  Raising funds in a developing nation is challenging and a real leap of faith for everyone who sits behind the microphone.  Please join me in prayer for this station.

The financial goal set by the station leadership is a humble P72,000.  That's less than $2000 USD and yet enough to cover for the station's lease for an entire year.  If God moves your heart, it would be a real encouragement to the team if their American brothers and sisters would join them in "Fueling Hope for Davao City."  If you'd like to make a special one time donation to their cause please click the link below.

We've set up a special PayPal account for this cause.   Click here to give to Edge Davao.  (The account is set up in Philippines Pesos which are currently exchanging at P43=$1.)
