Church must guide PH youth to the ‘right path’ — VP Sara

by Raymund Antonio, MB

Amid temptations of substance abuse, rebellion, and extremism that face today’s Filipino youth, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Wednesday, Oct. 26, called on the Church to shape the minds of the youth and guide them toward the “right path” as she vouched for the government’s support.

Vice President Sara Duterte speaks during the Jesus is Lord Church Pastors’ Congress at Novotel Manila on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022. (OVP photo)

The official spoke during the Jesus is Lord Church Pastors’ Congress at Novotel Manila for its 44th anniversary.

Citing the Church’s “significant role” in shaping the mind and conscience of the community, especially the youth, Duterte underscored how Filipinos all over the world seek the Church when they celebrate milestones and struggle with life’s challenges.

But she particularly urged the Church to guide the Filipino youth and contribute in rebuilding the nation.

“Our youth are vulnerable and easily impressionable and I call upon the Church to help us guide our young Filipinos into the right path. The lures of substance abuse, violent extremism, and rebellion keep pulling away our country’s future. I believe this is where the Church can support nation-building,” the Vice President said.

“Your ministries to the communities have never been more relevant than now when our youth’s mental and psychological health are held hostage by various social media influences and peer and social pressure,” she added, noting also how the isolation brought by the Covid-19 pandemic led to loss of confidence to navigate life.

(Photo from Inday Sara Duterte/Facebook)

“Without professional help and spiritual guidance, some have been driven to self-harm and harm others,” she furthered.

But aside from the youth, the official also highlighted how the Church must unify the family as society’s basic unit.

“As you come together to reinforce your vision of nation-building, rest assured that we, at the government, are your partners in advocacies and ministries for the Filipino people,” she said, adding that a society guided by a “moral compass” is a shared dream by the Church and government.

“The call to build a strong nation is an open invitation. It is for us all. After all, we speak in universal truths of kindness, compassion, love, joy, and peace for all,” Duterte asserted.

The Vice President, who shared that Bro. Eddie Villanueva’s Jesus is Lord Church is the same age as hers, expressed admiration for the Church’s 44 years of dedication “to spreading the word of God and winning spiritual battles for our nation.”

“Your commitment and sacrifice to reach out, spend time, and minister to these people have truly changed lives one prayer at a time,” she said.

On anger and our love for the Church

By Fr. Roy Cimagala *

THAT gospel episode where Christ drove away those who

converted the temple area into a market place (cfr. Jn 2,13-22)

reminds us of what is known as righteous anger and of our duty to love

the Church, not only as a physical building but most especially as the

very People of God, the very Mystical Body of Christ of whom we are

members.

Yes, there is such thing as righteous anger which we have to

understand well since it is a very delicate emotion or passion that

can easily turn bad if we are not careful. Remember St. Paul saying,

“Be angry but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger,

and do not make room for the devil.” (Eph 4,26)

Anger is one of our God-given emotions, locked into our

nature as persons. It has its legitimate use. But precisely because of

our precarious human condition here on earth, we have to be wary of

it. In fact, anger is also considered one of the capital sins, along

with pride, envy, greed, lust, gluttony, sloth, that can beget many

other sins.

If ever we have to be angry, let’s try our best to be angry

in the spirit of Christ who showed anger over the self-righteous

Pharisees and scribes, and over those who turned the temple area into

a market place. Christ’s anger is what is called righteous anger, one

that is done always in charity and in the truth, and not just due to

opinions and biases. It’s an anger that is meant to correct, purify,

heal.

Besides, Christ’s anger is only momentary. It does not last

long. As a psalm would put it, “his anger lasts only a moment, but his

favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing

comes in the morning.” (30,5) He is slow to anger, and quick to

forgive. We need to have a strong grip over this particular emotion.

But more importantly, the gospel episode referred to here

reminds us that we should develop a great love for the Church not only

in her physical dimension as in her buildings and all the materials

used in her liturgical celebration, which is already a tall order, but

more so in her real essence as the very Mystical Body of Christ and

the very People of God.

We need to be more conscious and skillful in our Christian

duty to love the Church. This cannot be taken for granted anymore,

especially these days when the world is developing in a very rapid

pace that often leaves behind our spiritual and religious

responsibilities.

The Church is nothing other than the people of the God,

gathered together at the cost of his own life on the cross by Christ.

This is because we from the beginning are meant to be God’s people,

members of his family, partakers of his divine life.

We have to understand that this gathering of the people of

God is not achieved merely by some political, social or economic

maneuverings. It is a gathering that is described as “communion,”

where our heart and mind work in sync with the mind and will of God.

It is a communion where the love of God for us is

corresponded to by our love for him. And this is done not only

individually by each one of us, but also collectively, all of us

together in an organic way. Thus, we need to help one another in this

common, universal concern.

Most Beautiful Catholic Churches in Mindanao

By: theteam@twomonkeystravel.com

WE’RE KACH & JONATHAN HOWE

We had both started out on the same path before we ever knew each other existed. We both decided to leave the nine-to-five career lifestyle, sell off our possessions and travel the world. Our paths first crossed in the small, historic town of Luang Prabang in Laos. I (Jonathan) was on a budget motorbike trip around Asia, while Kach was backpacking with her brother and sister.

We spent a lot of time together for a couple of days, visiting waterfalls and exploring the countryside on my motorbike, but then it was time to continue on our separate ways.

1. Caraga Church

Caraga Church, also known as San Salvador del Mundo Church, was built in 1884 and was known to be the oldest church in Mindanao and one of the few remaining Spanish colonial era churches in Mindanao. In 2012, it has been declared as a National Historical Site by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Not only an important cultural property, this church is significant not only in the province but to the whole country, since it is where Christianity began, in the Eastern part of the Philippines. This old stone church is made of coral and limestone blocks/rocks placed on top of each other, while the upper half is constructed mainly of wood. Main door has inscription of the symbol of Christ which dates the structure’s foundation in 1884. It also houses several artifacts including the two centuries-old giant seashells that serve as holy water font, a baptismal font used during the Spanish era, church bell that dates back to 1802 and an antique statue of San Isidro Labrador. Fascinating relics, a significant part of Christianity in the country, truly, this is one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines.
