On fake news and social media in the country

This week, politicians’ attention is on the Pulse Asia survey on Filipinos’ take on fake news and its sources. One senator even wants the government to make social media companies accountable (see “risa-on-fake-news-govt-must-hold-social-media-networks-accountable”). If Meta refuses to go to the EU, appear in their chambers and be questioned, who the heck is the Philippines, why would they listen to PH congressmen and senators? What can the government do to address this problem? I have a couple of suggestions which can be done without the need for legislation.

First - start weaning away from these social media services, and instead use the official government websites for proper information dissemination. One of the possible reasons why government agencies use social media is because it is easy and convenient to post articles, unlike their websites. This should not even be an issue (what is the DICT doing?). That being said, government agencies can also tap the University of the Philippines Office of the Vice-President for Development’s IT Development Center for assistance and training.

Another possible reason is social media access is free (on mobile) or has preferential affordable packages for these online services. Why is this? PH telcos and social media companies have a deal - which always involves money (business first, as always, who cares about its impact on Philippine democracy!?). First thing to do is to compel PH telcos to provide the same preferential treatment to all government online services, everything under .gov.ph (and whilst they are at it, CHED and DepEd must also get .edu.ph included!). Imagine, it is free or more affordable to access social media sites, which promotes and spreads fake news, than sites that debunk these fake news. How is this fair? This anti-competitive behavior calls for an Philippine Competition Commission inquiry on why and how PH telcos selected these online services, whilst not providing the same for other less known social media services (e.g., how can Mastodon sites compete against them?) and online services or even locally-developed online services. And in the long term, a new law that enforces net neutrality (hello, madam senator)- that prevents the internet service providers to provide preferential treatment to any online service (including their own).

Finally, we hear about educating Filipinos to be more critical of what they read, hear and watch. However, to be very effective, this should have started at the elementary level (yeah, DepEd again!). Whilst fake news and misinformation cannot be eradicated, what can be done is to restrict its spread. Companies such as Meta (which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp), Alphabet (which owns YouTube and Google Search), Twitter, and ByteDance (which owns Tiktok) bombard users with fake news and misinformation because it provides better engagement, translating to more revenue - so despite what they say about cooperating with governments (Yes, not only the Philippines) to combat fake news, at the end of the day, profit still rules for them.

With the exception of a law on net neutrality, the government has options on how to mitigate the spread of fake news. The real question is “Is the government willing?” What can DICT do? Well, that is for another article.

Facebook no longer attractive among teens

INTERNET use has increased massively in the past two decades and today, there are more active users than ever. Social media websites, in particular, have become extremely popular, with Facebook being the third most visited site in 2021.

Despite the recent rise of Instagram businesses and influencers, Facebook remains the most popular marketing platform — in 2021, 78 percent of its users said they have found new products and services on the platform according to data published by BroadbandSearch.

TikTok, on the other hand, was the most downloaded app last year after launching internationally back in 2017.

Social media is a big part of teenagers' lives — new generations are now being born in a digital world where texting and sharing videos have largely replaced real-life (or irl, as Gen Zs would say) communication. Tracking what interests young people and, particularly teenagers, when accessing the internet is a fascinating, useful tool for spotting larger trends and even peeking into the future.

Striving for answers, the team at TradingPedia examines a new report called "Teens, Social Media and Technology" by the Pew Research Center. It uncovers some interesting tendencies in young people's preferences such as the fact that nearly all teens right now use YouTube whereas only 32 percent say they use Facebook.

While Facebook remains the top platform of choice among all age groups in the US and worldwide, American teens prefer to spend their time mostly on YouTube. The website which launched in 2005 as a video streaming platform is now the most popular social media site among teenagers in the US, with 95 percent saying they have ever used it and 19 percent admitting they visit it almost constantly.

Next in popularity is TikTok (and its original Chinese version Douyin) which was released in 2016 but did not become globally available until 2018 when it merged with the Chinese social media platform Musical.ly. Of those surveyed by Pew Research Center, 67 percent say they have used the app and 16 percent say they use it almost constantly.

The third most popular social media platform among US teens is the video-sharing service Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms (known until recently as Facebook Inc.). Sixty-two percent of respondents are Instagram users, while 10 percent open or use it almost constantly.

Photo sharing app Snapchat is following closely, with 59 percent of teens using it. Fifteen percent say they are constantly on it.

Meanwhile, less than a third (32 percent) of all teens in the survey visit Facebook, and only 2 percent are almost constantly on it. Note that researchers did not include Facebook's Messenger as a separate platform in the survey, so it is likely that these percentages reflect the use of both Facebook and Messenger.

Teens were also asked about several other social media platforms and the results show that 23 percent used Twitter, 20 percent used Twitch, 17 percent were on WhatsApp, 14 percent used Reddit and a mere 5 percent say they ever used Tumblr.

Things change quickly in the world of social media, even more so when it comes to young people and their preferences. Facebook was once the most used social media website among teenagers in the US with 71 percent of them being on it in 2014.

Data from a similar survey by Pew Research Center shows that from 2014 to 2015, Instagram was the second most popular after Facebook with 52 percent using it, while Snapchat was used by 41 percent of respondents.

By 2018, when researchers conducted yet another survey, there was a significant shift in the social media landscape. Facebook's popularity dropped, and it had become the fourth most used platform with only 51 percent of teens using it. YouTube had replaced it — 85 percent of teenagers in the US said they used the website. Another interesting fact is that two platforms from the 2014 to 2015 survey were not present in the 2018 statistics — Vine and Google+, which were discontinued.


Teens on social media

Since TikTok exploded in popularity in 2018 and 2019, there have been concerns that the app and the short video form of the content, may affect users' attention spans and cause addiction.

However, findings from the Pew Research Center report show that YouTube is used more frequently than TikTok, at least at first glance. Nearly three-quarters or 77 percent of teens visit YouTube at least once a day compared to 57 percent who say they are daily TikTok users. Daily (or more frequent) use of platforms drops to 51 percent for Snapchat, 49 percent for Instagram, and 18 percent for Facebook.

But when we look at how many use TikTok and Snapchat at all, we could see that a larger share of users log in daily or more frequently. Around 86 percent of those who use the two platforms open them every day. And a quarter of users are on the apps almost constantly.

This brings us to the next question — is it hard for teens to stop using social media? Unsurprisingly, the short answer is "Yes," at least for half of the youngsters that took part in the survey.

More than a third of teens or 36 percent say they spend too much time on social media, while 55 percent think they spend just the right time on these platforms. Another 8 percent believe their time on social media is "too little."

Researchers also asked them how hard it would be for them to quit social media and 54 percent of respondents said it would be hard — that would be "very hard" for 18 percent of teens and "somewhat hard" for 35 percent. For 20 percent of teens, this task would be "very easy," while 26 percent found it "somewhat easy."

Moreover, 78 percent of teens who say they spend too much time on social media admit it would be hard for them to quit it, with 29 percent describing it as "very hard."

Immer präsent, gut drauf, perfekt gestylt - das Leben in den sozialen Netzwerken kann auf Dauer anstrengend sein. Immer mehr Promis setzen deshalb aufs digitale Fasten. Auch "Normalos" brauchen vielfach eine Pause.


Für rund sechs Wochen war es auf den Social-Accounts von Schauspieler Tom Holland still geworden. Mit einem Video auf Instagram meldete sich der Spiderman-Darsteller schließlich wieder zurück  - nur um sich dann wieder von seinen Fans und Followern zu verabschieden.


"Ich habe eine Pause von den sozialen Medien eingelegt, um meine geistige Gesundheit zu schützen, weil ich Instagram und Twitter als zu stimulierend und überwältigend empfinde", sagte der 26-Jährige in einem Instagram-Video, das er am Sonntag veröffentlichte. Demnach gerate er in eine Spirale, wenn er online Dinge über sich lese. "Und das ist letztlich sehr schädlich für meinen geistigen Zustand."


Prominente Gesellschaft 

Die Liste von Promis, die sich in den vergangenen Jahren ganz bewusst eine längere Pause von sozialen Medien genommen haben, ist lang: Auch Musiker Ed Sheeran, Popstar Britney Spears, Sängerin Miley Cyrus, Schauspielerin Selena Gomez oder Sänger Justin Bieber - um nur einige zu nennen - legten einen sogenannten Digital Detox, also eine digitale Entgiftung, ein. Die Gründe waren ganz unterschiedlich: zu viel Hasskommentare, zu viel Bildschirmzeit, zu viel Selbstinszenierung.

Auch in der Politik sind soziale Medien umstritten: Bundeswirtschaftsminister Robert Habeck etwa hatte Twitter bereits 2019 verlassen und ist auch bis dato nicht zurück gekehrt - obwohl andere Politiker die Plattform nahezu im Stundentakt als Sprachrohr verwenden. "Das war eine der weisesten Entscheidungen, die ich in meinem Leben getroffen habe, da rauszugehen", sagte Habeck in der ZDF-Sendung "Markus Lanz" Anfang 2021. In seinem Blog schrieb er damals: "Twitter ist wie kein anderes digitales Medium so aggressiv und in keinem anderen Medium gibt es so viel Hass, Böswilligkeit und Hetze." 


Zwischen Depression und Anerkennung 

Der Wunsch nach einer digitalen Pause ist auch bei ganz normalen Usern groß. Laut einer Umfrage des Digitalverbands Bitkom will ein Zehntel der Menschen in Deutschland im Jahr 2022 wieder mehr Zeit offline verbringen - und rund 43 Prozent haben dies in der Vergangenheit schon ganz bewusst getan, um sich wieder besser zu fühlen. 

Doch wie "schlimm" sind soziale Medien wirklich? Zahlreiche Studien haben sich bereits mit den Auswirkungen von Instagram, Twitter und Co. beschäftigt - doch die Antworten sind nicht ganz so eindeutig, wie man meinen könnte.

Die Universität Bath stellte beispielsweise in einer Umfrage im Frühjahr 2022 fest, dass bereits eine digitale Auszeit von einer Woche das allgemeine Wohlbefinden verbesserte, Ängste und Depressionen abnahmen. Dass die Ergebnisse so ausfielen, könnte aber auch an der Rekrutierung der Teilnehmenden gelegen haben. Immerhin mussten sie vor dem Start einwilligen, eine Woche auf soziale Medien zu verzichten -  und waren so möglicherweise schon stärker motiviert, eine Pause einzulegen.


"Bewusst versacken"

Auch andere Studien sehen einen Zusammenhang zwischen Nutzungsdauer und Depressionen. Was jedoch zuerst da war, lässt sich schwer belegen, heißt es. Denn möglicherweise beschäftigen sich Menschen mit einer Neigung zu Depressionen auch häufiger mit sozialen Medien als andere. Andere Studien, wie die der Universität von Abu Dhabi von 2019, zeigten auch negative Konsequenzen vom Digital Detox: Teilnehmende berichteten während ihrer Social-Media-Abstinenz von Stress und Einsamkeit. 


Ständig online - Digitale Reizüberflutung

"Wichtig ist, dass wir selber mitbestimmen, wieviel, was, wann und wie lange wir die Zeit mit Medien verbringen", sagt Mediencoach Kristin Langer von der Initiative "Schau hin" der DW. "Und dass wir nicht durch andere Personen und Mechanismen, wie zum Beispiel Push-Nachrichten und Erinnerungen, reingezogen werden. Man darf 'versacken' - aber sollte sich dessen dann auch bewusst sein." 

Welche Auswirkungen soziale Medien auf das eigene Leben haben, sei immer von der Persönlichkeit abhängig, sagt Langer. Während die einen von neuen Netzwerken profitierten, empfinden andere Druck und auch Neid - angesichts anderer User und Userinnen, die es im Leben scheinbar besser haben als man selbst.


Die neue App für mehr Echtheit? 

Könnte "Be Real" Abhilfe schaffen? Die neue App aus Frankreich will mehr Authentizität in die Welt der sozialen Medien bringen. In der App kann man also nichts bearbeiten, keine Filter auf die Fotos legen und nicht mehrmals hintereinander posten. So soll es echte Einblicke in das Leben der User geben, so das Versprechen von "Be real".


Depressiv dank Instagram?

Die App fordert die User per Nachricht dazu auf, innerhalb von zwei Minuten ein Foto zu machen. Wann die Nachricht kommt, weiß man im Vorfeld nicht. Sie kann am Vormittag oder auch spät am Abend auftauchen und richtet sich an alle vernetzten Freunde und Follower. Egal ob man gerade die Wohnung aufräumt oder sich die Fußnägel schneidet - wenn die Aufforderung kommt, soll all das abgelichtet werden. Postet man außerhalb dieses Zeitfensters, wird das Foto von der App als "spät" kommentiert. 


Ganz risikofrei ist jedoch auch diese App nicht, warnt die Initiative "Schau hin". Gerade Jugendliche müssten darauf achten, dass sie in der Eile nicht etwas posten, was ihnen im Nachgang doch unangenehm ist oder wo vielleicht eine weitere Person abgebildet wird, die nicht mit aufs Bild möchte. Hier müsste der rechtliche Charakter stärker betont werden, denn es geht hier um das Recht am eigenen Bild, das man persönlich wahrnimmt. Außerdem können die Benachrichtigung für das tägliche Foto dazu führen, dass Benutzer konstant darauf warten - und sich ihre Medienzeit damit auch nicht signifikant ändert.

Veteran actress Susan Roces passes away, tributes flood social media

THE Queen of Philippine Movies Susan Roces has passed away, her family confirmed. She was 80 years old.


"With great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved Jesusa Sonora Poe, whom many of you know as Susan Roces. She passed away peacefully on a Friday evening, May 20, 2022, surrounded by love and warmth, with her daughter Grace, her nephews Joseph and Jeffrey and many of her family and close friends. She lived life fully and gracefully," a statement from the office of Roces' daughter, Senator Grace Poe-Llamanzares, read.


"Remember her in her beauty, warmth and kindness. She is now with the Lord and her beloved Ronnie — FPJ. We will miss her sorely but we celebrate a life well lived. Susan Roces — daughter, mother, grandmother, a true Filipina and a national treasure."


Jesusa Purificacion Levy Sonora-Poe in real life, Roces made her acting debut in the 1952 film "Mga Bituin ng Kinabukasan."


She was married to the "King of Philippine movies," Fernando Poe Jr. from 1968 until his death in 2004.


Roces was last seen portraying Lola Flora in the long-running TV series, "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano."


Condolences and tributes from personalities in show business and politics flooded Twitter.


"Susan Roces," "Rest in Peace," and "Lola Flora" — the character Roces last portrayed in the long-running TV series, "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" — quickly reached the top trending topic list of the social media app.



"My sincerest condolences to Sen Grace and the family and loved ones of Ma'am Susan Roces... Rest in peace po Ninang Susan... you will be missed..." Senator-elect Francis "Chiz" Escudero shared via his Twitter account, @SayChiz.


"Rest In Peace Ninang Susan Roces," Senator-elect Jose Victor Ejercito also tweeted.

Scammers now target intelligent users

The number of social media users recently scammed, hacked, and even harassed online is alarming. While cyber crime victims before were the clueless titos and titas, now, journalists, doctors, teachers, and even those in the religious communities have fallen to the more sophisticated forms of scams. We could see now the impact of cyber crime across all ages and spectrum of society.

My job as the Tech Editor and Information and Communications Technology head of Manila Bulletin has made me the unofficial 24/7 tech support guy for my friends. Just last week, I got urgent messages from five of my friends asking about different cyber security issues.

I always tell my friends to be careful when clicking links from emails. Scammers could convincingly copy websites to look the same as the real ones. Check the URL before clicking, hover the cursor on top of the link, check the lower-left corner of your browser. If you don’t recognize the URL, don’t proceed.

Never trust Facebook-sponsored posts immediately. Facebook allows scammers to target you using its platform. If a sponsored post asks you to log in to your account, it’s a scam. Don’t proceed. If you see these scam ads, it means the scammers target you. Using the Facebook algorithm, the scammers know that you are more likely to click their sponsored post.

These are the messages I got from my friends. With the help of some members of the Phillippine Hacking University (PHU) group, we recovered three Facebook and one Instagram accounts. Read on and learn how not to be a victim of cyber scams.

Scammers are out there waiting for your to make that mistake of clicking and engaging with them.

Question: I got a private message asking me to post an article through an instant Facebook article. He will pay 60 dollars per published article and 120 dollars for videos. Is this legit?

Answer: That’s a scam. It happened before. A struggling Facebook page immediately grabbed what seems to be an opportunity. Instead of getting that 60-dollars for the article and 120-dollars for the video, the scammers took over the page. If you agree, the scammers will then ask you to give them access to your Business Manager Account, don’t!. Giving permission will provide them with authority to kick you out as owner/admin of your page.

Question: I got a message that says my Facebook account would be verified and have that blue check after my name. I need to follow the instruction and install an app from someone who claims to be from Facebook.

Answer: That’s a scam. Facebook will never ask you to install an app to verify your account. Be careful. Third-party apps you would install could not only compromise your social media account but also take over your computer.

Question: I got a message from a friend that says I won a government agency raffle. I need first to send PhP 28,500.50 for a tax clearance fee to get the one million-peso prize.

Answer: That’s a scam. Never believe a message like this or its variants. Sometimes, scammers would use your friend’s account to ask for money from you. Never send anything. Verify first if it is really from your friend or that agency who said that you won something.

Question: I think hackers compromised my Facebook account. Someone is accessing it without asking permission. What would I do?

Answer: If you’re worried about the security of your FB account, go to

 https://www.facebook.com/hacked. Facebook will walk you through how to change your password if you think your account is compromised. After following all the instructions, immediately activate the 2FA feature to add an extra layer of protection to your account.

Question: I got a message saying that he has access to my email. As proof, he gave me the old password that I used for my account. He told me that he would forward my incriminating messages and photos to my friends and family if I won’t pay US$100 using bitcoin.

Answer: This is a scam. These criminals usually get email addresses from compromised databases. A breach like this is not your fault. To secure your email, you need to change your password regularly. It would be best to use a password that you could easily remember but difficult for hackers to guess. Don’t worry. A message like this is a scam, and the sender has no access to your email.

Remember, always think before you click.

Facebook in Germany

I was glad and satisfied learning just an hour ago, that Germany's antitrust watchdog restricts Facebook's data collection via other sites.

Facebook faces restrictions in Germany on its collection of data from other sites that it owns like WhatsApp. The social media giant intends to appeal, claiming the watchdog underestimated the competition it faced. Sure, I didn't expect another reaction. But, is  the social media giant abusing its market?

Fact is: the company will only be able to use data from various non-Facebook programs and apps that it owns, such as WhatsApp and Instagram, with explicit user consent. Currently, Facebook bundles together much of the information it gleans from users across its various platforms.

Allow me quoting Mr. Andreas Mundt, president of the antitrust watchdog in Germany, who said yesterday (Thursday, February 8, 2019), "In future, Facebook will no longer be allowed to force its users to agree to the practically unrestricted collection and assigning of non-Facebook data to their Facebook accounts".

Of course, the ruling, which came after a one-year investigation, does not yet have legal force and Facebook has a month to appeal the ruling, which it says it intends to do.

"The Federal Cartel Office underestimates the fierce competition we face in Germany, misinterprets our compliance with the GDPR, and threatens the mechanism European law provides for ensuring consistent data protection standards across the EU," Facebook said.

Well, while living in the Philippines,  I am with Facebook since ten years now. Several friends of mine deleted already their Facebook accounts because they worried that the tech giants are getting more and more out of control. But, aren't all of us already sitting in a glass house?

And here the thing: WhatsApp and Instagram can still collect data from their respective users; however, pooling  this information with a user's Facebook data will only be allowed if that user provides their consent. Operating with double standard?

Facebook can only collect data from third-party websites, such as interfaces that have a "like" or "share" button, with the user's permission. If consent is not given, Facebook can only collect the data to a very limited extent.
The cartel office said that the extent to which Facebook collects data without the consent of a user is "abusive."
It said Facebook could face fines of up to 10 percent of its annual global revenue, which grew by 37 percent to $55.8 billion (€49.2 billion) in 2018, if it fails to comply. Wow.

The antitrust watchdog said Facebook dominates the German market for social networks with 23 million daily and 32 million monthly users, a market share of 95 percent. It pointed out that one of its competitors, Google+, plans to discontinue its social network by April 2019. How about the Philippine market?

However, in its calculations, the cartel office did not consider Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Xing as competitors to Facebook. It said those services "offer only a selection of social networking services." It claimed that even if they were included, Facebook, with Instagram and WhatsApp, would still dominate the market.

PNP warns public on social media posts

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday urged the public to be careful with social media posts that may be used by criminals this holiday season.
PNP deputy spokesperson Supt. Kim Molitas said social media users should exercise restraint when posting their whereabouts or their itineraries for the holiday season on the site as this may be used by criminals. 

“Netizens should take precautions and be aware of the consequences of anything that they post on social media in real time,” she said.
The PNP did not want to cause alarm, but urged the public to limit the information that they post online and make sure their posts are restricted to family and friends.
The PNP said there has been no increase in petty crimes even with the coming holidays. 
“Our efforts did not go to waste because we sustained the campaign against crimes even before the holidays,” Molitas said.
She said it is the first time that there has been no reported increase in the number of petty crimes before the holidays.
Molitas said the PNP hopes to continue this trend even after the holiday.

Ten years ago, I was still a freshman, when it comes to Internet and blogging. When I started my first own blog as German expatriate living in the Philippines, a very special social network came across my path. The Facebook! I started chatting with some media friends from allover the Philippines.

Actually I started with "Friendster". Friends from the whole globe! Facebook was introduced to me as new site for college kids.

Nowadays, May 2018, we're experiencing different headlines, when we it comes to social media networks. Despite scandals over fake news and data privacy, one thing is for sure: the social network Facebook is unlikely to disappear any time soon.

Fast forward to April 2018: founder and CEO of “The Facebook,” Mark Zuckerberg, sat before US Congress trying to convince lawmakers his social network, initially set up as a way for students to stay in touch with each other, does not pose a threat to the stability of Western democracy and does not treat its users’ personal information with disdain.

The hearing saw him admit that his company had not done enough to prevent the service it provides being used for fake news, foreign interference in elections and data leaks. In March, it emerged that a political consultancy called Cambridge Analytica used data harvested from millions of Facebook users without their consent. The scandal rocked Facebook to its core and has forced its founder to reconsider how it does business.

In the latest round of his grand apology tour Zuckerberg faced the European Parliament this week (it's Friday, May 25, 2018 while writing this piece!) and faced even tougher questioning, just as Europe is poised to introduce new laws that will give it some of the strictest data privacy rules in the world: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Actually, during the first year, I found Facebook’s evolution and societal function both equally fascinating and disturbing.

The biggest question of all that gnaws at the back of my mind is whether there is any stopping Facebook in the future?  It looks increasingly like the answer is no.

“Friendster failed for simple reasons: the time wasn’t right,” says Bernie Hogan, senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute. “Not only is it about the readiness of people to participate in a social networking site, but it’s also just about the nuts and bolts.”

Friendster and MySpace helped blaze the trail for Facebook's global popularity, but they failed to achieve even close to the same success as their successor.

The kind of engineering that allows Facebook to function every day simply wasn’t available back in the early days of the new millennium. But by 2004, internet speeds had increased and the coding that underpins websites had become more sophisticated. The technical limitations of earlier social networking sites like Friendster and Friends Reunited cleared the runway for Facebook.

But despite technical barriers, those other sites paved the way for Facebook at a time when people were still a little wary of putting too much of themselves out on the internet. In the 1990s, internet users were warned against even sharing their first name online, but now words like “oversharing” and “selfie” are so common they are recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary.

Facebook - bone or ban? Fact is, Facebook is becoming that de facto, online identity provider. I am with Twitter and LinkedIn. But bear with me, most time, I spend being online in Facebook.

Once the mid-2000s rolled around, Facebook was also able to hire a lot of talented engineers from Silicon Valley, which helped it put together the kind of website infrastructure that could scale-up with an exponentially growing user base. Your Newsfeed doesn’t curate and customise itself – its launch needed engineers to cook up algorithms that picked the most valuable updates from your friends’ updates.

But Hwang points to another serendipitous factor in Facebook’s global rise: mobile phones. In a lot of developing countries, people only have cheap mobiles to access the internet. In fact, a lot of these users think Facebook is the internet.

“We can’t discount the power of mobile,” says Hwang. It’s made “social networks much, much more pervasive. You have social media at all times in your pocket, which makes it this powerful platform for news and conversation that operated in a slower way in the desktop-only era.”

As Facebook’s popularity has spread, so too have predictions of an imminent “tipping point”. One 2014 study from Princeton University forecast that Facebook could lose “80% of its peak user base between 2015 and 2017.” This prediction was made long before the Cambridge Analytica scandal did so much harm to the company’s reputation. So, how has Facebook managed to accumulate the business equivalent of a cat’s nine lives?

For starters, it has become so engrained and intertwined in the digital ecosystem of the 21st Century that it is hard to now untangle it. Oxford’s Hogan points to a concept he calls “interoperability.” This is where a Facebook login is often required to use and operate other online services.

“Just today I went out to buy concert tickets,” Hogan says. “I had to log into Facebook. I don’t use Facebook, but I had to dust off my login. Facebook is becoming that de facto, online identity provider.” I am sure, you experienced the same my dear readers.

Facebook also taps into basic human needs, according to psychologists. Even with social media movements like #DeleteFacebook, mass privacy concerns or even just calls to leave the site on the back of pedestrian design tweaks, people just can’t stay away.

“Almost everybody comes back,” says Catalina Toma, associate professor of communication science at the University of Wisconsin. “Social networking sites tap into what makes us human: we like to connect with others.” Yes, we don't go out and meet friends somewhere for a chat or a beer or coffee. We are connected with them via Facebook.

But there are tangible benefits beyond those that keep people hooked.

“Lots of studies show the more people use Facebook, the more social capital they derive – resources that we get from just being connected to other people,” says Toma. “There’s emotional support, asking for advice, asking for recommendations.”

For many Facebook users, the pros outweigh the cons: tracking down long-lost friends, getting leads to a job, expanding their business. They can deal with the glamorized glimpses. All this keeps people coming back for more, despite the onslaught of what Toma calls “glamorized glimpses”. These are the carefully curated peeks into the lives of everyone else, who all seem to be doing better than you. “They feel worse, but they cannot stop,” Toma says. I strongly have to agree!

Facebook is bound to have a grip on our lives. “Social media companies seek to exploit one’s attention for profit,” Hogan says. “It’s not even ambiguous. It’s exactly what Zuckerberg said in Congress: ‘Where do you get your money?’ ‘We get it from ads.’”

Right place, right time: the rise of internet-connected mobile devices in turn fueled the rise of Facebook.

But even after the Cambridge Analytica disaster – Zuckerberg eventually published an apology to the 87 million Facebook users whose data was inappropriately shared  – there’s still no stopping the social media steamroller.

“Facebook’s business is still going to accelerate,” says Scott Galloway, a professor of marketing at New York University who wrote The Big Four, a book about how powerful a tiny handful of technology companies are becoming. “Consumers talk a big game but where is the first place they go to express their rage? Facebook and Instagram. And with 2.2 billion monthly active users, advertisers have no choice but to be on Facebook.” That could change, though, as advertising dollars follow young users who abandon the platform.

Still, there’s plenty of stability with older people – even among senior citizens. The site’s true future could boil down to what world governments decide to do, if anything, about Facebook’s growing influence.

“I don’t think the question is [what is] ‘killing Facebook’,” says Sherry Turkle, professor of the social studies of science and technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “I think the question is what would get people to an appropriate use of Facebook. To the extent that we ‘knew’ about it before, we found ways to put it out of mind. Now, we can no longer do this.” We’re now all too familiar with the dangers of data leaks and fake news.

Let's face it: there’s also the simple fact that Facebook has a monopoly. “Facebook’s sheer size and cash on hand means that they can either acquire or effectively shut down any competition,” says Galloway, pointing to examples like WhatsApp and Instagram, which were eventually absorbed into the Facebook behemoth.

For now, Facebook is still so entrenched in our daily lives, there’s not going to be an immediate escape.“What’s more likely to happen is that people start to realize the markets and economy might be better off – by stimulating innovation, creating new jobs – if we were to break it up and have multiple firms instead of just one,” Galloway says. That’s the more likely outcome than Facebook just crashing, burning and disappearing altogether, according to the experts.

For this to happen, governments will crack down on regulation to make Facebook less powerful. And while Facebook’s success has satisfied our human needs for connections, its sheer size, massive user base, and staying power has brought with it unprecedented scrutiny – like the kind we’ve seen this week in Europe.

Rest in peace, Facebook? Surely a big NO!

Does our social media betrays our mood?

Clues to the state of your mental health may be hiding in plain sight – in the tweets you send and the Facebook updates you post. There it is in your Facebook timeline or Instagram gallery – a digital footprint of your mental health.

I was shocked but - on the other way also very interested checking out more on BBC. This February, BBC Future is exploring social media’s impact on mental health and well-being – and seeking solutions for a happier, healthier experience on these platforms. 

One thing is really clear: it’s not hidden in the obvious parts: the emojis, hashtags and inspirational quotes. Instead, it lurks in subtler signs that, unbeknownst to you, may provide a diagnosis as accurate as a doctor’s blood pressure cuff or heart rate monitor.

For those who see social media mainly as a place to share the latest cat video or travel snap, this may come as a surprise. It also means the platform has important – and potentially life-saving – potential. Following the BBC:  in the US alone, there is one death by suicide every 13 minutes. Despite this, our ability to predict suicidal thoughts and behavior has not materially improved across 50 years of research. Forecasting an episode of psychosis or emerging depression can be equally challenging.

But data mining and machine learning are transforming this landscape by extracting signals from dizzying amounts of granular data on social media. These methods already have tracked and predicted flu outbreaks. Now, it’s the turn of mental health.

Studies have found that if you have depression, your Instagram feed is more likely to feature bluer, greyer, and darker photos with fewer faces. They’ll probably receive fewer likes (but more comments). Chances are you’ll prefer the Inkwell filter which converts colour images to black and white, rather than the Valencia one which lightens them.

Even then, these patterns are hardly robust enough in isolation to diagnose or predict depression. Still, they could be crucial in constructing models that can. This is where machine learning comes in.

While checking out all these details, I try to recall my last posts and reactions in social media. Maybe at this moment, you think about yours too.

Allow me to share more with you, my dear readers: researchers from Harvard University and the University of Vermont used these techniques in their recent analysis of almost 44,000 Instagram posts. Their resulting models correctly identified 70% of all users with depression. compared to a rate of 42% from general practitioners. They also had fewer false positives (although this figure drew from a separate population, so may be an unfair comparison). Depressive signals were evident in users’ feeds even before a formal diagnosis from psychiatrists – making Instagram an early warning system of sorts.

Meanwhile, psychiatrists have long linked language and mental health, listening for the disjointed and tangential speech of schizophrenia or the increased use of first-person singular pronouns of depression. For an updated take, type your Twitter handle into AnalyzeWords. It’s a free text analysis tool which focuses on junk words (pronouns, articles, prepositions) to assess emotional and thinking styles. From my 1017 most recent words on Twitter, I’m apparently average for being angry and worried but below average on being upbeat – I have been pretty pessimistic about the state of the world recently. Enter @realdonaldtrump into AnalzyeWords and you’ll see he scores highly on having an upbeat emotional style, and is less likely than average to be worried, angry, and depressed.

The behaviour we exhibit online can be used to inform diagnostic and screening tools – so the opinion of Chris Danforth, University of Vermont.

But far beyond this quick and sometimes amusing scan of emotional and social styles (AnalyzeWords tells you if you’re more “Spacy/ValleyGirl” than average), researchers are exploring profound questions about mental health.

Telling signals of depression include an increase in negative words (“no”, “never”, “prison”, “murder”) and a decrease in positive ones (“happy”, “beach”, and “photo”), but these are hardly definitive. Taking it a step further, researchers at Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Vermont extracted a wider range of features (mood, language and context) from almost 280,000 tweets. The resulting computational model scored highly on identifying users with depression; it also was correct in about nine of every 10 PTSD predictions.


The ratio of positive to negative words was a key predictor within the model, says Chris Danforth, one of the researchers and Flint professor of mathematical, natural and technical sciences at the University of Vermont. Other strong predictors included increased tweet word count.

What to do with all this information? Empowerment would be a good start. 

Reservations persist more broadly in this field, though, especially around privacy. What if digital traces of your mental health become visible to all? You might be targeted by pharmaceutical companies or face discrimination from employers and insurers. In addition, some of these types of projects aren’t subject to the rigorous ethical oversight of clinical trials. Users are frequently unaware their data has been mined. Yes, include me in. And -maybe- you too!

As privacy and internet ethics scholar Michael Zimmer once explained, “Just because personal information is made available in some fashion on a social network, does not mean it is fair game for capture and release to all”.

BBC news made me very thoughtful: Data mining and machine learning offer the potential for earlier identification of mental health conditions. Currently, the time from onset of depression to contact with a treatment provider is six to eight years; for anxiety, it’s nine to 23 years. In turn, hopefully we’ll see better outcomes. Two billion users engage with social media regularly – these are signals with scalability. As Mark Zuckerberg wrote recently while outlining Facebook’s AI plans, “there have been terribly tragic events – like suicides, some live streamed – that perhaps could have been prevented if someone had realized what was happening and reported them sooner.”

Quoting BBC again - and here, I really strong agree: mental health exists between clinic appointments. It ebbs and flows in real time. It lives in posts and pictures and tweets. Perhaps prediction, diagnosis and healing should live there, too.

Fake news are not new but just simply to be spread via the World Wide Web and here especially social media platforms. Actually since several months, I avoid reading and especially spreading news in Facebook. Good to know that Facebook to tackle fake news with educational campaign….
Users will be directed to Facebook’s help center where they can get detailed advice. Facebook is launching an educational tool as part of measures it is taking to counter fake news.
For three days, an ad will appear at the top of users’ news feeds linking to advice on “how to spot fake news” and report it. The campaign, which will be promoted in 14 countries, is “designed to help people become more discerning readers”, the social media firm said. These countries are Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Myanmar (Burma), Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina,United States and Canada.
But experts questioned whether the measure would have any real impact. “Until Facebook stops rewarding the architects of fake news with huge traffic, this problem will just get worse,” Tom Felle, a lecturer in digital journalism at City University told the BBC. Starting Friday, April 7, 2017, users who click on Facebook’s ads will be redirected to its help center, where they will see a list of 10 tips for identifying false stories.
These include looking at an article’s URL, investigating the source of a story and thinking more critically about whether an article is a joke. It also recommends being “sceptical of headlines”, as false news stories “often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation points”.
Facebook’s new guide is a useful primer on the basic principles of good journalism. If all the millions who will see it popping up in their feeds read and digest it, maybe it will have an effect.
But it will only be there for three days and one has to suspect that it will be read in the main by people who are already suitably sceptical about hoaxes and propaganda. So I’m not convinced that this will be seen as a game changer in the battle to make Facebook a place you go to find the truth, rather than wallow in your friends’ prejudices.
What could be more effective is a German plan to combat hate speech and fake news that Facebook does not like one bit. German chancellor Angela Merkel’s government has just approved plans which could see social networks fined up to 50 million Euros if they fail to remove illegal con-tent within 24 hours.
However, critics also said the tool was just one part of a broader strategy, and that there was “no silver bullet”.
Indeed, in my opinion, Facebook should go further. One of the biggest problems with fake news is that the algorithms that run social media sites like Facebook and search engines such as Google are being gamed by black ops companies.
Facebook has been under pressure to combat fake news on its platform after claims it was used to sway voters during the US presidential campaign. Examples include a story that falsely claimed President Obama had banned the pledge of allegiance in US schools, and another fake news item, saying former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was part of a paedophile ring. Facebook has since taken action to improve its monitoring and reporting processes.

Miss Universe 2017 Candidates Stay Behind to Explore the Philippines

MANILA – Several candidates of the 65th Miss Universe pageant obviously loved the Philippines that some of them decided to extend their stay in the country.
One week after the coronation, some of the contestants have been hitting the beach and taking to social media to share their awesome pictures.
For instance, Miss Universe US Virgin Islands Carolyn Carter is currently admiring the beauty of Palawan. Aside from visiting the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Carter went on to explore Palawan by heading to El Nido.
Like Carter, Miss Universe Germany Johanna Acs is also in Palawan with her family.
“Today I really felt like I found paradise on earth... Warm heartedly recommending everyone to visit this place once in your life! It was so worth the 6 hours drive from Puerto Princesa,” she wrote on Instagram.
On the other hand, Miss Universe Israel Yam Kaspers Anshel is in Boracay.
Miss Universe New Zealand Tania Dawson, meanwhilee, is exploring the beauty of Cebu.
