Travelers should remain cautious amid COVID-19 threat —WHO rep

by Analou de Vera, Manila Bulletin

An official of the World Health Organization (WHO) urged the public to be responsible and still follow the health protocols to avoid possible rise in coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

WHO Acting Country Representative Dr. Rajendra Yadav made the statement as the Philippines already reopened its borders for fully vaccinated international tourists.

“We encourage de-risking travel which means that we have to take necessary steps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection during the travel and after the travel. Blanket travel bans can give a false sense of security and destroy economies,” said Yadav during a public briefing on Friday, Feb. 11.

“However, we must be cautious about interpreting these easy travel restrictions and quarantine requirements,” he added.

Yadav emphasized the importance of maintaining adherence to minimum public health standards.

“Easing travel restrictions and quarantine requirements does not mean that anyone can travel anytime, anywhere they want,” he said.

“We need to follow the minimum public health standards like masking and physical distancing while traveling. Travel only when necessary and keep our safe travels as small as possible,” he added.

Coronavirus: Germany plans new COVID-19 testing rules for travelers

The Health Ministry is reportedly planning to expand obligatory testing to all travelers, even from low-risk areas. The move has been criticized for going too far, as well as for not going far enough.

The new proposal will likely not include those who have been fully vaccinated or who can show proof of having recovered from coronavirus.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn is planning compulsory coronavirus tests for travelers entering the country, regardless of where they travel from, Funke Media Group reported on Tuesday.

The ministry is aiming for "an expansion of test requirements upon entry as quickly as possible," according to a document seen by the media group. The goal is to curb the recent rapid rise in infections, especially with the highly contagious delta variant.

Currently, air passengers and people entering from high-risk areas are obliged to provide a negative test or proof that they have been fully vaccinated or have recovered from an infection.

The new rule would set a blanket requirement, not just limited to high-risk areas or certain types of transport, the report said. But it is unclear whether the change would apply to fully vaccinated people.

"The coordination in the government on this is underway," a Health Ministry spokesperson told Reuters.

Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht opposed the plan, considering blanket testing disproportionate, according to the Funke report.

The news of the plan comes shortly after German lawmakers and officials clashed over proposals to extend freedoms only for those people who have been fully vaccinated.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, the rate of infection across Germany on Tuesday averaged 14.5 new cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days. While this is still relatively low, that rate was just 4.9 on July 6. Nearly 50% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

Can testing stop a fourth wave?

Virologist Martin Stürmer welcomed the possibility of expanding of compulsory testing, saying: "We're actually already seeing that return travelers are contributing in a heightened way to bringing infections into Germany."

He told public broadcaster ZDF that vaccinated and recovered people would likely be exempt, but said such an approach would be "negligent" because even those who have been fully vaccinated can still contract the delta variant.

The virologist was skeptical about the chances of avoiding a fourth wave of infections in Germany. While the connection between infections and hospitalizations would become weaker over time, he said, there are still unknowns regarding the long-term effects of COVID-19.

"We have a virus where we still don't know exactly what consequential damage will ultimately be done," Stürmer said.

MANILA, Philippines - As an old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes a picture is worth more than a thousand words.
AirAsia recently launched #WhyIFly, an online campaign that seeks to drive more people to pursue their travel goals and spread the love of storytelling through beautiful films and photographs.
Company CEO Joy Cañeba shares, “Travel inspiration is everywhere. People are eager to break their routines, and are hungry for new and authentic experiences. Thanks to the Internet, Filipinos are becoming increasingly aware of the beauty and vibrant natural wonders of the Philippines and social media has made it very easy for people to share their discoveries, and spread a sense of wonder.”
To kick-off the campaign, several traveler-storytellers flew to different places courtesy of the airline to get a firsthand experience and to capture vibrant landscapes and idyllic country life many weeks ago.
Some young Filipino travel groups such as Where to Next, Free Spirits PH, SinoPinas, as well as videographer Patrick Martin journeyed far and near to explore Biri Rock Formations of Northern Samar; the bright turquoise waters of El Nido; the undiscovered beaches of Kalibo; and the lush forests of Bohol, and discovered little and large pockets of beauty.
One of the travelers is Javi Cang said the experience let them discover more places that are not known to many.

"If you go San Vicente in Palawan, there's so many nice beaches. If you drive through San Vicente, just on the road side, there will be white sand beaches just like what you see in El Nido and Boracay. It's a little rugged pa and not yet developed, but what travelers can do is just take on the challenge of exploring the areas," shares the 25-year-old finance professional/adventurer.
Below are some of the photos from the travelers, chosen for the exhibit which was displayed on June 23 at the CBTL in BGC.

#WhyIFly aims to inspire more stories and journeys from people through the #WhyIFly Challenge, a call to inspire friends and loved ones to embrace local travel by sharing their travel motivations through beautiful photos in social media. The challenge will take place via Instagram, and will require participants to post one photo of their trip a day for five consecutive days, and provide an answer to “Why I Fly” as captions.
Four winners will be randomly chosen from the pool of entries from June 24 to Sept. 30, 2016 and will win seats for two to Bohol, Palawan, Tacloban or Kalibo and discover their own #AirAsiainBohol, #AirAsiainKalibo, #AirAsiainTacloban, or #AirAsiainPalawan stories. - Alixandra Caole Vila
