A heat index ranging from 42°C to 51°C indicates impending “danger,” as “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely,” and “heat stroke is probable with continued activity,” PAGASA said.

Aside from Dipolog City, dangerous heat indices were also recorded on Sunday in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte (43°C); Central Luzon State University, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija (43°C); Dagupan City, Pangasinan (43°C); Legazpi City, Albay (43°C); Masbate City, Masbate Legazpi City, Albay (43°C); Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pasay City (43°C); Davao City, Davao del Sur (42°C); Laguindingan Airport, Misamis Oriental (42°C); Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (42°C); Roxas City, Capiz (42°C); and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (42°C).

The highest heat index in the country so far this year was recorded on May 12 in Legazpi City, Albay at 50 °C.

In the next 24 hours, the intertropical convergence zone or ITCZ, a weather system where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, may cause rains in southern Mindanao, PAGASA said.

However, the rest of the country will continue to have hot and humid weather with possible isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon or evening.

BY ELLALYN DE VERA-RUIZ

The seven-day positivity rate for Covid-19 in Metro Manila has slightly increased, while several other areas in Luzon have registered “high” rates over the past week, OCTA Research said on Sunday, May 14.

OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said the positivity rate in Metro Manila rose slightly from 22.7 percent on May 6 to 25.4 percent on May 13, which is classified as “high” in OCTA’s metrics.

David noted that high positivity rates were also observed in Bataan (from 12.5 percent on May 6 to 20.2 percent on May 13), Batangas (from 23.2 percent to 33.7 percent), Benguet (from 17.4 percent to 20.3 percent), Bulacan (from 20.1 percent to 25.2 percent), Camarines Sur (from 45.1 percent to 46.5 percent), Cavite (from 35.3 percent to 36.9 percent), Isabela (from 25.9 percent to 36.6 percent), Laguna (from 26.6 percent to 29.9 percent), Oriental Mindoro (from 10.5 percent to 29.5 percent), Pampanga (from 19 percent to 24.8 percent), Quezon (from 29.4 percent to 42.7 percent), and Rizal (from 38.8 percent to 44.4 percent).

The peak of the surge, particularly in Metro Manila, may occur "within one to two weeks," the OCTA fellow said on May 10.

Positivity rate refers to the number of individuals who yielded positive results from among those who have been tested for Covid-19.

The benchmark for the positivity rate set by the World Health Organization is 5 percent.

On May 14, the Department of Health reported 2,109 new Covid-19 cases across the country, of which 868 cases were recorded in Metro Manila.

David projected that the country may record 1,400 to 1,600 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, May 15.

He said the country’s current positivity rate is 23.4 percent, down slightly from 23.6 percent on May 13.

Keep your guard up vs Covid-19—expert

BY ANALOU DE VERA

A medical expert reminded Filipinos to continue practicing the different layers of protection as the Philippines is once again experiencing an upward trend in Covid-19 infections.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Rontgene Solante said that the pandemic is not yet over.

In a recent statement, the Department of Health (DOH) said that Covid-19 cases nationally “show continued increase with reported cases in the recent week at 1,533 cases per day as of May 10, which is a 75 percent increase from last week.”

On Sunday, May 14, Solante said that this current rise in cases “is expected and will be the new normal wherein we see periods of increase [in] cases.”

The public should “not to be complacent because anyone can get the infection whether vaccinated or unvaccinated because of the ability of [the] current subvariant to evade our immune response.”

He advised the public to update their Covid-19 vaccination, particularly the general population who are already eligible to receive the second booster shot.

Solante also highlighted the importance of wearing face masks.

“We should also advise the public to wear face mask[s] in high risk areas,” he said.

“Face mask is encourage[d] but not mandatory, and should be worn for those with high risk population to develop severe Covid such as elderly population, immunocompromised and those with comorbidities,”  he added.

He also emphasized the importance of Covid-19 testing and isolation.

“For those who are symptomatic— with cough, sore throat, and those with fever, they are encouraged to be tested for Covid so that if positive, they should isolate themselves to prevent transmission,” said Solante.

“For those in the high risk population who are symptomatic, they should consult their doctors for proper treatment using antivirals,” he added.

There are so many unique Filipino practices that set us apart from other cultures. Some of them include:

  • "Pagmamano"

A traditional way of greeting elders by taking their hand and placing it on one's forehead as a sign of respect. This practice is still widely observed in many Filipino households and formal gatherings.

  • "Pabitin"

A traditional Filipino game where prizes are hung on a bamboo frame and participants try to grab as many prizes as they can by jumping and reaching up to the frame.

  • "Sari-sari stores"

Small neighborhood convenience stores found all over the Philippines that sell a wide variety of goods, from snacks and drinks to household items and toiletries. They are a unique feature of Filipino culture and are a convenient one-stop-shop for many Filipinos.

  • "Kamayan"

A traditional Filipino way of eating with one's hands, usually done during feasts and special occasions. Food is served on banana leaves and diners use their hands to scoop up portions of rice and viands.

  • "Pasalubong"

The practice of bringing gifts or souvenirs for friends and family when returning from a trip. It's a way of showing thoughtfulness and appreciation for loved ones and is an important part of Filipino hospitality.

The basis of our hope

WHEN Christ told his disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit to them (cfr. Jn 15,16-16,4) after he shall have died, resurrected and ascended into heaven, he was reassuring them—and us—that despite whatever we experience in this world, we can have hope to reach our final destination, which is to be with God in heaven, fully transformed into his image and likeness as God wants us to be.

We should just learn how to strengthen our hope always, since that is a crucial virtue to have. Given our condition as a pilgrim here on earth, exposed to all sorts of challenges, trials, difficulties and the like, we should make sure that we are always on the move toward our ultimate, spiritual and supernatural goal. That’s what hope does for us.

We should not get distracted or entangled by our earthly affairs, whether good or bad, for as the Letter to the Hebrews would put it: “For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.” (13,14) Thus, we have to always strengthen our hope. Our earthly affairs should only be a means and occasion to foster our hope to get us to our ultimate destination.

Hope is first of all not just a virtue that we produce, cultivate or keep to ourselves. It is first of all a gift of God, given to us in abundance. It is the gift of Christ himself who, by the Holy Spirit, is made present in us through his words, his sacraments, his Church. All we have to do is to correspond to this wonderful reality as faithfully and vigorously as possible.

That is why we need to be most mindful of the truths of our faith, giving time to meditate on them and to make them sink in our very consciousness. We have to be wary of our tendency to be carried away by our earthly concerns, no matter how legitimate they are. For again, as the gospel would say, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mk 8,36)

It’s important that just like in that management style called MBO (Management by Objective), we have to have a clear vision of our ultimate goal and make it the strongest desire of our life, so that we don’t get entangled with the ups and downs and the drama of life.

Christ has warned his disciples—and us—that because of him, we will encounter severe trials that would go to the extent of testing our very faith. We have to be ready for this eventuality by always developing a sharp sense of discernment of what the Holy Spirit would be prompting us to think, say, do and react.

We also need to be constantly reminded of what Christ himself assured us. “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (Jn 16,33) We need to be ready when some fears, and worse, anxieties and depression, would come to us.

This, of course, will require some significant effort, because nowadays people are getting too hooked in their earthly, temporal affairs. Some of them who are considered more on the successful side, get too immersed in them that they forget their spiritual and supernatural goal. Others, who are more on the losing side, eventually fall into discouragement and despair. They end up finding no meaning in life.

We should do everything to sharpen our sense and virtue of hope!

Falling in love with your life

Sometimes, we feel our life is turning miserably. Our negativism doesn't allow us to keep our eyes, ears - and, most important! - our minds, hearts and souls opened. We're reaching our breaking point.

This breaking point can be the prelude to our strongest moment. Can be! Must not! But if yes, then it is when we reach our breaking point,  we discover our real strength. Allow me to ask you, my dear readers: "What happens to you or with you when you reach your breaking point?" Do you face it or do you run away? I'll be giving you a very simple answer: If you face it - you break it. If you run away (and/or close your ears, eyes and mouth) - it breaks you!

Everyday - a dull reality! Many of us will answer this question with a big YES! Actually, we do like to cover a newborn's day already with a grey veil. But, each day has a new face, but sometimes we don't have the strength to watch its countenance. Of course, not every day has adventures and highlights. Would be really too easy!

Contrary to what might be expected, I look back on experiences that, at the same time, seemed especially desolating and painful with a particular satisfaction. Indeed, everything I have learned, everything that has truly enhanced and enlightened my existence, has been through affliction and not through happiness.

If it ever were to be possible to eliminate affliction from your earthly existence, the result would not be to make life delectable, but to make it too banal and trivial to be endurable.

By observation, we can feel that many of us need help to manage our everyday life. We need something that would keep us going as we journey through life. Many times we can also learn from other people and their experiences.

And here is one more thing: Affection is the humblest love - it gives itself no airs. It lives with humble and private things: soft slippers, old clothes, old jokes, and the thump of a sleepy dog's tail on the kitchen floor. The glory of affection, the disposition of mind, the good will and tender attachment, that can unite those who are not "made for one and another"! .

For me life has been a thing of ups and downs in approximately equal measure. I don't have something sensational to report every day about my progress. Often, I wonder if fulfillment in life is necessarily tied to change for the better. But one thing is for sure: I keep staying in love with life.

Falling in love with your life means taking advantage of what you have and chasing after the things you want. It means doing, going, and truly living.

You discover what you’re wildly passionate about, and you make time for those things.

Love is beautiful, but it isn’t everything. There are so many other things to be passionate about besides a person—art, photography, music, writing, literature, sports, exercising, work—to just name a few. When you start falling in love with your life, as opposed to investing all your time and energy into a relationship, you find time for the things that light a fire within you, the things that inspire and fuel you. And your life becomes more satisfying and complete as you focus on those things rather than romance.

You become more in-tune with your wants and needs. Falling in love with your life means learning what you love, what you desire, and what you need. It means focusing on your goals and how you can, and will pursue them. It means discovering what you really want out of relationships, out of yourself, out of your existence on this earth, and creating a well-designed plan for your future.

You value the relationships that you do have, instead of focusing on the ones you don’t. Romantic relationships aren’t the only things that fill your life with love and happiness. When you’re focused on things other than your love life, you invest more time in the people who fill you—your family members, friendships, and other platonic relationships. And you learn the incredible value of those people.

You travel, explore, and live selfishly. When you fall in love with your life, you want to squeeze every minute dry. You want to travel to new places, try new foods, explore, and live how you want. This isn’t wrong. Falling in love with your life means taking advantage of what you have and chasing after the things you want. It means doing, going, and truly living.

You shift your focus to other important pieces of life. When you’re not focused on a relationship, you take and make more time for other things—your career, hobbies, future, finances, etc. Your priorities shift in healthy ways and you learn to ground yourself rather than letting a relationship ground you.

You spend more time doing things, rather than wishing for things to happen. Falling in love with your life means that you don’t like to waste time. You don’t like to chase things that don’t build or grow you. You don’t like to live a mediocre, uninspired existence. When you love your life you do things, rather than being a passive character in your own story.

You value advice from others, and take time to lend a listening ear. You want to learn, to experience, to grow, to be inspired. Thus, you value the advice and guidance given to you from others and you’re more willing to be a support system for people who may need you.

You spend more of your days outside or in nature. I know it's terribly hot at the moment. But, the world around you has more value now. You enjoy hiking, walking, biking, or just sitting outside in the shade. You love just being—around friends or solo, just soaking in the beauty the world has to offer.

You pray often, and feel both humble and thankful for what you’ve been given. Every day, life surprises you with its beauty and wonder. You find yourself praying for the blessings you’ve been given, and relying on your faith to pull you through the hard times. You trust that you will find love when the timing is right; in the meantime, you are thankful and humble for where you are.
