Tourism will help fast-track our economic recovery and growth

The country witnessed in the past few weeks a flurry of events related to tourism. Just a few days ago, the Philippine Travel Exchange or PHITEX tallied a record-breaking ₱172 million in business sales leads in just two days. PHITEX, now in its 21st year, is the biggest government-led travel trade event organized by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB). Alongside it, the 6th World Travel Expo was being held in another hotel and also recorded robust sales and attendance. Based on these two separate events, there is so much optimism in the coming months, especially in 2023, for the pandemic-battered tourism industry.

Before these two events, stakeholders gathered in a “Philippine Tourism Industry Convergence Reception” where the President made his message clear — that his administration is committed to revitalize the tourism industry.

“It became very clear that as we transform our economy, one of the possible and high potential drivers for the transformation for the economy was tourism and the reason is we in the Philippines have been so fortunate to have been born in this very beautiful country. Even more so, we have been so lucky to be born to such beautiful people,” the President said. To his credit, the President was up and about as an unofficial “tourism ambassador” as he led in various events that will help promote and publicize the country not only to international travelers, but also to domestic tourists. 

The President spearheaded the ceremonial lighting of the San Juanico Bridge, the first of its kind in the country where a bridge will feature an aesthetic light and sound show. It is touted as the newest tourism drawer, an attraction that will repurpose the bridge not only as a vital link between Samar and Leyte, but as a catalyst to help boost local tourism around the area.

Over the weekend, the President also joined the MassKara Festival in Bacolod City, highlighting the message that the country is “reemerging from a crisis.”

“The pandemic is fading away. We are learning to manage it… it is now time for us to go back to work, to go back to our normal lives, to remind ourselves of all the opportunities that were before us before the pandemic,” he said, noting that the MassKara Festival signaled not only the opening of Bacolod City, but more so the country to tourists all over the world.

Stressing the vital role of tourism in our economic development, the President’s latest vlog also suggested that Filipinos must “explore, travel, and discover the beauty of the Philippines.” 

“Please remember that every trip and travel inside our beautiful Philippines will help in our (economic) recovery,” the President said. He also noted that the coming weekend — a long one due to the declaration of Oct. 31 as a non-working holiday — is an opportune time to join our families to discover the countryside.

He added: “From the beginning, we have already identified tourism as one of the key drivers to revitalize our local economy. We can create more jobs if we develop our tourism sector.”

So, what is there for us to do? Time to pack our bags, check our cars (or the bus schedules), book a hotel or resort online, and just go as every peso that we spend for local enterprises is a peso that will help lift up their lives, their communities, and ultimately, our country. 

𝐃𝐝𝐎’𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐩 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤

 

Being one of the province’s economic driver that attracts a big number of tourist visits, Davao de Oro’s tourism wellness loop bounces back from the unfavorable changes brought by the pandemic over the past two (2) years. 

Recently, the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro through the PAO-Tourism Division headed by Senior Tourism Officer Christine Dompor, visited some of the tourism destinations of the province together with the Provincial Administrator Fatima Montejo. The team conducted a site inspection to assess and measure possible interventions from the provincial government to further intensify the service quality offered by the wellness loop.

The team visited ten (10) tourism facilities on Saturday (August 6, 2022): Bilawa Hot Waterfalls in Brgy. Mainit and Pagkokorowan Gaw Bukanan in Maco, Lake Leonard (Danao) Aqua Eco Park in Brgy. New Leyte, Maco, Tambo Viewdeck+Cafe, Tagbibinta Falls, Maragusan, Maragusan Eco Solid Waste Management Park, Pyalitan Falls, Maragusan, Mt. Patong Sea of Clouds, Angel Farm and Flower Garden, and De Oro Suites in Maragusan.

In Barangay Mainit, Maco, local officials led by Brgy. Captain Michelle Lim welcomed the provincial team led by PA Montejo.  It is where the Bilawa Hot Spring is located and is one of the top earning and mostly visited Community-Based Ecotourism destinations with over 200 coop-members.  Recently, the province was able to have its  10% share of revenue for its three (3) months of operation amounting to PhP600, 000.  

These tourism destinations not only popularized Davao de Oro in the market, but it also served as a gateway for more job opportunities for the locals. Its revamp from the pandemic generated more income-generating revenues and established cooperatives with its local workforce such as farmers, fisherfolks, mountain and boat guides, and caterers.

The team also met with Mayor Angelito J. Cabalquinto of Maragusan, and discussed plans for infrastructure provisions and other necessities in some tourism sites in Maragusan.

Recently, the tourism  division of the province in partnership with the provincial health office conducted a Covid-19 vaccination drive to various tourism facilities to further secure its operations amidst the pandemic. (PAO-IPRD DdO)

Another farm-to-market road opens new beginnings in Brgy. Napnapan Pantukan, Davao de Oro. Recently, completed Barangay Development Program (BDP) funded projects undergo ongoing official turn-over ceremonies by the provincial government.

In total, Davao de Oro ranks second after Davao City with the most projects from BDP of the National Task Force ELCAC, with one-hundred twenty-eight (128) projects received by sixty-five barangays (65) formerly under the brink of chaos due to insurgency.

The right implementation of the BDP-funded projects in DdO sets a trajectory for sustainable development in tourism in the province. Formerly hidden and hard to reach, more eco-tourism spots were now discovered and businesses began to boom which open more jobs for the people. From coffee shops in the mountain ranges and lake-side to highland resorts and adventure parks are some of BDP’s positive impacts in Davao de Oro.

According to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Davao de Oro is the best implementer for the BDP Projects, evidence of good governance through implementing government programs for the benefit of communities in far-flung communities.

Governor Tyron Uy, together with the DILG, PNP, AFP, and the office of Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), personally handed the completed FMR in Brgy. Napnapan with a length of 1,580 meters, following other turn-overs of much-needed community projects such as water systems, and health centers.

Davao de Oro: Making change happen

Davao de Oro Province--- From farm to market roads, to schools in the hinterlands, sustainable agricultural developments, livelihood for the marginalized sectors, infrastructure projects, digital innovations, tourism circuits, pandemic mitigating initiatives, and the eradication of insurgency are some of the significant achievements of Davao de Oro in the last five years.

Through its strategic 4Ps+ program which stands for Planet (Environmental Management and Disaster Preparedness) People (Social Protection and Human Development), Prosperity (Economic Development), Peace (Peace, Justice and Security) and Plus (Good Governance), PLGU-Davao de Oro proved that change could happen, bringing its name into the limelight.

Not only did Dabawenyos witness this year’s SOPA of the Governor at the comfort of their homes, but also people from across the globe as the event was live-streamed via official social media platforms of the province reaching thousands of views and engagements.

Following health and safety protocols, the event was attended by the officials of the provincial government of Davao de Oro, municipal mayors of the province, Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and partners from the National Government Agencies.

The highlight of this year’s SOPA are the feats of Davao de Oro as a province that brought substantial changes to the lives of every dabawenyo.

“We had surely come a long way. We used to be the hotbed of insurgency, now our peace and order situation is one of the most stable in the Davao Region. From a place feared by many, we became one of the most visited provinces in the entire country by tourists even in the middle of a pandemic. From a laggard economy four years back, we are now one of the most competitive provinces in the Davao Region. Kaning tanan, atong kadaugan! It is our collective work that made the change happen. We made this change happen and let’s continue to make change happen. Dabawenyo, sa tanang panahon, magpabilin kitang bulawanon!”, said Governor Uy.

Just in time with the Governor’s SOPA is the celebration of the country’s golden festivity, Davao de Oro’s “Bulawan Festival”, from October 25-29, 2021, which will happen via online platforms.

The 5-day virtual celebration will highlight events such as “Pre-SOPA Broadcast Talkshow” giving a glimpse of the governor’s SOPA, “Bulawan Opening”, and “Sayaw de Oro” in the first day. On the second day will be the Bahandi, which will feature the “Peoples of Davao de Oro”, “Bulawanong Kalinaw” which will showcase peace initiatives of the province.

The third day of the virtual festivity will feature the “Shoplokal Launch”, an online portal that will showcase Davao de Oro’s local products, “Agri Oro” showcasing the best practices and stories of the farmers and fisherfolks of the province, and the “Byahe ni Gov” a virtual tour giving pride to the tourism circuit destination of the province.

The fourth day of the celebration will brandish the “Pasasalamat”, a tribute concert for the frontliners of Davao de Oro, featuring the renowned band in the country, “Ben&Ben”, and the last day of the online Bulawan Celebration will be the “Bulawanong Pahalipay”, a raffle activity inviting dabawenyos for the chance of winning special prizes and the “Tiktokan Bakunation Campaign” highlighting the province’s Bakunation Campaign. No stopping ‘summer’ fun in the Philippines, DOT says

Summer, as they call it, has come but as the threat of the coronavirus disease remains, would it still be more fun in the Philippines? Yes, according to Department of Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

“There is no stopping summer. Marami nang tourist destinations ang nagbukas ngayon — nagbukas na ang Boracay, Puerto Princesa — marami nang pwedeng puntahan ngayon (There are so many tourist destinations that reopened like Boracay, Puerto Princesa — there are many sites to visit now),” said Puyat said in an interview over DZRH on Saturday, March 6.

The national government, along with the Local Government Units (LGUs), is even trying to revive the economy via tourism as more areas have started to open their borders and also eased the travel restrictions like cancelling the Travel Authority and Medical Clearance Certificate as requirements.

Several destinations also have no age restrictions which are perfect for a quick getaway with the whole family including grandparents and children.

“Ang pamilyang Pilipino malungkot ang bakasyon kung hindi kasama ang buong pamilya. Ito na ang pagkakataon na ang buong pamilya ay magkasama-sama at ma-enjoy nila nag napakagagandang beaches sa Pilipinas (Filipinos want to travel with their families. This is the opportunity for the whole family to get together and enjoy the beautiful beaches in the Philippines),” Puyat said.

Aside from the opening of favorite vacation spots in the country, Puyat said that the streamlining of required travel documents will also encourage more tourists to visit these destinations.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases approved last month a uniform set of travel protocols for land, air, and sea across the country while keeping strict health protocols in place.

These include the scrapping of the mandatory coronavirus disease (COVID-19) testing, except when required by the local government unit (LGU) of destination, as well as the need to go on quarantine unless the traveler shows symptoms.

“When we travel sinusunod namin yung mga travel requirements as respect na rin to the LGUs kaya nararamdaman namin kung gaano kahirap kapag maraming hinihinging documents. At least ngayon mas simple na ang requirements (we follow the travel requirements as respect to the LGUs so we know how hard it is when there are many documents needed. At least now, the requirements are simpler),” Puyat shared.

While many people are now confident to travel amid the pandemic, the tourism chief reiterated the need to strictly follow the minimum health protocols even during a vacation such as wearing face masks and face shields, maintaining physical distancing, and practicing proper hand hygiene.

“Kailangang meron pa rin na minimum health and saftey protocols lalo na ngayon na dumating na ang vaccine. Mabuti nang mas maingat para we are good to go (Following the minimum health and safety protocols is a must even during vacation especially now that the vaccine already arrived. It is better to be more careful),” she added.

Tourists were also reminded to always book with accommodation establishments and tour operators that are accredited by the Department of Tourism to ensure their health and safety during their trip.

Puyat said tourists from Metro Manila can still avail of its subsidized RT-PCR test at the Philippine General Hospital for as low as P900 to help reduce travel costs.

Igacos won’t allow island-hopping despite tourism reopening

ISLAND-HOPPING within the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) will still be prohibited once tourism operations within the island resume on March 1, 2021.

Igacos Tourism Officer Jennifer Dagohoy Cariaga said in a radio interview on Wednesday, February 24, that island-hopping, one of the main tourism activities on the island, is still not allowed.

Cariaga did not further elaborate on the reason why the local government had temporarily suspended island-hopping activities.

The prohibition of island-hopping had been an existing guideline on the island prior to the suspension of Samal's tourism activities on December 18, 2020.

In a previous report, island-hopping was suspended to regulate the movement of the public as a mitigating measure against Covid-19.

She also said resort-hopping will also not be allowed.

"Kung asa ka naka-book, dili ka pwede magsuroy. Dili ka pwede mag-resort-hopping (Once you are booked to a certain establishment, you cannot roam anywhere and do resort hopping)," Cariaga said.

As of Wednesday, the city government has yet to issue an executive order (EO) on the complete guidelines, which Cariaga said the mayor will issue within the week.

She also added they would still implement the "no booking, no entry" policy.

As to the operational capacity, only 50 percent of the resort’s capacity will be allowed to maintain the required physical distancing.

Meanwhile, Cariaga said the local government is planning to lift the 24-hour liquor ban as they set to allow establishments to sell liquor. She, however, said liquors should not be consumed in public and even on resorts.

Beach resorts started the resumption of their operation on August 1, 2020, while tourism activities such as island hopping, scuba diving and aqua sports activities resumed on September 16.

Tourism activities on the island were suspended on December 18, 2020, in anticipation of the influx of tourists who wished to celebrate Christmas in Samal.

The Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) approved the request of the Igacos government to reopen its tourism industry.

In a news report from state-owned media PTV Davao on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, Uy confirmed that the IATF granted their appeal to allow the gradual reopening of the island to tourists under a limited capacity after submitting their appeal to the national IATF.

Only resorts and other tourism-related establishments accredited by the local government and the Department of Tourism will be allowed to operate, he said.

Uy added that tourists outside Davao Region will also be allowed to visit Samal, but they must abide by the imposed requirements.

"Kadtong sa mga (Those from) outside Davao Region, they will go through the antigen test. Isa pud na sa gi-unsa pud sa IATF sa amoa (These were the regulations that the IATF ordered us to implement). Anyway, ang (the) antigen, ang mag-conduct ana [is] ang city unya libre na siya (will be provided by the city for free)," he said.

‘New normal’ tourism demands it:

DOT chief underscores need for uniform travel protocols

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat reiterated on Wednesday, Feb. 17 her call for the enforcement of standardized health protocols across all active tourism destinations in the country.

She noted that based on the results of the latest Philippine travel survey, one the top desires of the traveler-respondents was to have standardized travel and safety protocols in the various travel destinations so that the booking process would become easier.

“This is exactly our complaint because we in the DOT, we really go around and we follow all the protocols because we want to see how it is to travel,”

Puyat said in a virtual briefing wherein she discussed the survey findings. 

“Admittedly, kahit na kami, nahihirapan din kasi (even us are having a hard time because) different provinces [have] different protocols and I agree that it is really important to have uniform travel protocols,” she added.

The online travel survey, which was a follow-up to the May 2020 survey, was conducted by the DOT from Nov. 28 to Dec. 30 last year. It was carried out with the Asian Institute of Management (AIM)-Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center and Guide to the Philippines in a bid to support the crafting of the department’s strategy to jumpstart the tourism industry. 

Another common traveler sentiment that authorities learned from the survey is the need to “personalize” travels.Based on the survey, “value-sensitive” travelers prefer trips that are tailored according to their needs and objectives. Meanwhile, simplified trips to tourism destinations with the most relaxed health protocols and reduced cost and are a better fit for “price-sensitive” travelers.

In a bid to help travel agencies and tour operators enhance their packages and services, the tourism chief said that the department will roll out development initiatives such as business-to-business meetings, bench marking, product audit, and familiarization tours featuring new sites and attractions that will entice more people to travel domestically. 

“As always, we shall be taking a multi-lateral approach to address current issues relating to the pandemic, working more closely with local government units, stakeholders, and local communities,” Puyat said.

“Guided by the new survey results, the DOT and its partners will be able to plot the crucial next steps for the recovery of the tourism industry, creating better, more efficient, and effective strategies where there is mutual and inclusive growth for all,” she added.

Titled “The Evolving Landscape of Domestic Travel in the Philippines: A study of travelers and tourism enterprises amidst the pandemic,” the survey gathered responses from a total of 7,243 travelers from all 78 provinces in the country, as well as 108 tourism enterprises to get their views on traveling under the “new normal”.

DAVAO CITY IS NOW PHILIPPINES' CACAO CAPITAL

After years of promoting the cacao industry, Davao City finally grabs the recognition as the Cacao Capital of the Philippines given by the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday.

Not only that, Davao City is also the regional winner for Organic Program under the local government unit (LGU) category.The two recognition were received by Mayor Inday Sara Duterte from DA Secretary William Dar in a virtual event on Monday afternoon.

“For the past few years now, Davao cacao has been recognized as among the world’s best, with our local brands making waves in international chocolate competitions, and a growing number of Filipino and foreign chocolate makers sourcing their beans here,” Mayor Sara said in her acceptance message.

Mayor Sara noted that from the year 2015 to 2019, the city has produced 2,289 metric tons of cacao, making Davao the biggest cacao producing area in the entire country. “While it is one thing for our cacao and chocolates to be renowned internationally, to be recognized by the national government is just as important for us, for this is an affirmation and a celebration of the efforts of our cacao farmers and processors, and everyone in the cacao industry,” she said.

Mayor Sara also highlighted the contribution of the city’s cacao industry players and organic agriculture partners for Davao City to get the latest recognition.

“I thank all of our cacao industry players and organic agriculture partners because all of your efforts have brought Davao City these accolades.”

The mayor said that the goal of local agriculture is not just to ensure that there is food on the table for each Dabawenyo, but to make it a viable and sustainable industry for our farmers and all stakeholders.Mayor Sara sees the agri awards as an inspiration for the city to continue to work harder for a more flourishing agricultural industry. Branding of Tourism and Investment Workshop held

Davao de Oro Province---Barely 2 months after finally gaining its identity as the “Golden Province,” the Province of Davao de Oro through the Tourism and Investments Promotion Division in partnership with Information Division held a two-day Branding of Tourism and Investments Workshop at the Vice-Governor Conference Room, Legislative Building, Provincial Capitol of Davao de Oro on February 27-28, 2020.

The workshop was attended by the Municipal Information Officers of the 11 municipalities, Chairperson of Municipal Tourism Council, Local Economic Investment Promotion Officer, Business Permit and Licensing Officer, representative from the Municipal Planning Office and Chairperson of Business Chambers.

The workshop aims to establish a distinctive brand identity and tagline for each municipality in terms of promoting their place for tourism and investment and, since the province of Davao de Oro is composed of 11 municipalities distinctly having their own natural uniqueness in terms of environmental and economic endowments bestowed upon them which could be the foundation for the whole Davao de Oro to retain its brilliance amongst other provinces.

Before coming up with their respective branding, each municipality undergone a process of determining their municipality’s unique strength in a bird’s a view and taking account concrete gifts which asserts their significance from the pool of the best places on earth.

On the second day, branding for investments in the various municipalities were focused in the workshop, promoting business ventures that would hype up their marketing, adding identity to their products, setting them apart from other business ventures outgrowing to gaining people’s side and loyalty.

Soon enough, the whole province of Davao de Oro will completely engrave its golden brand offering more employment opportunities for all dabaweños, creating additional demand for goods and services paving the way for a sustainable economic development for the golden province.

Comval Tourism receives six pearl awards

Compostela Valley Province-- Six (6) pearl awards were received by the Provincial Tourism Office through the Supervising Senior Tourism Operations Officer (SSTOO) Ms. Christine Dompor of Compostela Valley during the conduct of the 20th Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) National Convention on October 2-5, 2019 at the Fort Ilocandia Resort, Ilocos Norte.



With this year’s theme, “Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All”, tourism officers and tourism stakeholders from all over the country had convened to share their knowledge, build networks, immersed in different communities and learned from these visits towards sustainable tourism.


According to Dompor, ATOP is an organization of tourism officers from all over the country who aims to strengthen its capabilities in tourism development, strive towards the highest standard of information and services for tourists, promote the welfare of its members and other partners, and foster unity in the industry.

Dompor added that the highlight of the four-day event of the DOT in Ilocos is the pearl awards were the association are being recognize for their exemplary practices, programs, and innovations employed by the Local Government Units (LGUs) in tourism governance. Together with the Department of Tourism (DOT), ATOP encourages Local Chief Executives to actively participate in the country’s tourism development initiatives. The award-giving program also is supported and partnered with the technical partner, the University of Sto. Tomas (UST).

Now on its 15th year, the PEARL AWARD: ATOP-DOT Best Tourism Practices of the Philippines Awards, honors local governments, and tourism officers who have contributed the significantly towards achieving sustainable tourism development in their respective communities.

“As of this year, ATOP added a new set of categories open to all levels, provincial, city and municipal were out of 300 plus entries all over the country, Compostela Valley was able to reap 6 pearl awards,” the tourism officer said.

For Provincial Category Comval were able to receive the 1st Place for Best Tourism Month/Week Celebration for the Tourism Month 2018 activities and 1st Place for Best Tourism Event Sports Festival for Visit Davao Summer Fun in Comval.

While for the Municipal Category Grand Champion for the Best Tourism Festival as Contemporary/other art form in NABIFILMEX of Nabunturan; 1st Place for Best Tourism Event Festival as Heritage Conservation for Lyurot Festival of Golden Valley in Mabini; 2nd Place for the Best Tourism Event-Adventure for the Tapok Tunob sa Langub Caving activity in Mawab, and a Special Citation for Best Tourism Event Festival as Thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest during the conduct of Simbalay Festival in the municipality of Nabunturan

All in all, 6 trophies garnered by the Comval delegation with two (2) LGUs already making names out of its tourism programs and projects.

Davao Norte gears up for 51st Kadagayaan Festival 2018

Week-long festivities will usher in the 51st Kadagayaan Festival of Davao del Norte, this time featuring the "Visit Davao Summer Festival 2018" aimed at showcasing the province's diverse culture and rich natural resources.

The festival, which will run from June 24 to July 1, will honor the 'Dabaonons' proud heritage, multicultural identity, resiliency and creativity, said Davao del Norte provincial tourism head Noel Daquioag.

Among the activities lined up for the festival is the holding of the Investment Conference (ICon), in partnership with the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalem-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Daquioag said the festival is also being supported by the Department of Tourism, which is also organizing a tourism fair featuring interactive exhibits to be showcased in an open-air pavilion in partnership with the local government units and industry leaders.

The exhibit, he said, will be on the province's must-visit destinations, such as popular beaches and waterfalls, coral gardens, marine park, and culture farm for pearls. Another pavilion will feature an Agri-Aqua Trade Expo with a highly-interactive exhibit of industry-based products.

Daquioag said one of the main highlights will be the Binibining DavNor 2018, which organizers hope to become the grandest beauty pageant in the region.

I am honored and blessed being invited to become one of the distinguished judges along with selected government official, beauty queens, beauty pageant mentors and other influential personalities.

Another will be the Hudyaka 2018, featuring the different festivals all over Mindanao, showcasing the heritage of the island's tribes and ethnic groups.

Meanwhile, some 300 participants will see action during the MUSAMAN TriDavNor National Triathlon competing in the 1.5-km swim, 40 km bike and 10-km run.

Daquioag said the race aims a promote a healthier lifestyle and at the same time promote the province's tourism sites.

DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES –The Philippines scored yet another tourism marketing coup with its successful hosting of the Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon last Sunday in this premier Mindanao city, the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Thousands of people welcomed and cheered over 2,000 competitors in the different categories of this prestigious international sporting event that featured 21 world champions, including men’s professional big winner Mauricio Mendez of Mexico.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Tulfo Teo said tens of thousands foreign and domestic visitors descended in Davao City for the spectacle race, rendering hotel resorts in the area fully-booked days before the three-day event began.

“Once more, we have showcased Davao City as an outstanding venue for major international events and as a safe haven for truly great fun experience,” said Teo, a self-made Davao travel entrepreneur before her ascent to the DOT top post.

Both Teo and Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio vowed to facilitate and host other popular sports events this year, including a segment of the World’s Strongest Man competition next month in the backdrop of immense Mt. Apo.

“I’ve been wanting to do the Ironman here. I am very happy that it’s here now and we welcome you all wholeheartedly,” Mayor Duterte-Carpio said during the media day at the Ayala Land’s Azuela Cove in Davao City’s Lanang district.

The triumphant 22-year old Mendez, a heartthrob among women enthusiasts, said he has fallen for Davao City’s pristine scenery, luscious greenery, the exotic local cuisine and the Filipino hospitality.

Mauricio finished second in last year’s IRONMAN in Cebu City and a seven-time first-placer in previous IRONMAN and XTERRA professional triathlon competitions.

Women's pro-winner Radka Kahlefeldt of Czech Republic has competed several times in the Philippines while Cebu native Jorry Ycong topped the Asian Elite category.

The triathlon included a 1.9-kilometer swim, followed by a 90-kilometer bike, and ended with a 21.1-kilometer run.

A record-high 1,800 professional triathletes from 39 countries like Australia, Japan, Hungary, Mexico, United States, South Africa and the Czech Republic competed the 9-hour event that also featured Filipino celebrities Matteo Guidicelli, Wilfred Uytengsu, Kim Atienza, and Bubbles Paraiso.

The organizers prepared special medals for the finishers, crafted by a prominent Mindanaoan artist named Kublai Millan.

Teo also lauded the local Philippine National Police (PNP) region 11 police office and hundreds of community volunteers for ensuring security and traffic safety throughout Sunday’s race.

“Tourism does not only seek to promote destinations but also wellness for local and international visitors to pamper themselves, and Mindanao offers a complete package for holistic health and fitness, and nature adventure,” said Teo.

“Marami pang darating na events, not only in Davao but in other places din para ma-promote ang iba pang destinations (There will be more events not only in Davao but also in other emerging tourist destinations),” Teo added.

Teo said the event is aligned with the DOT’s “Go South” program to promote world-class destinations like Siargao, Samal Island, Camiguin, Zamboanga and Tawi-Tawi, and Mindanao’s products, food, culture and tradition.

Tourism remains vibrant in Boracay

Boracay Island – Officials of the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Tourism (DOT) conducted an aerial inspection of Boracay Island on Thursday, ahead of the Senate onsite investigation on the escalating environmental degradation in the world-famous beach resort in Aklan.

According to DENR Undersecretary and spokesman Jonas Leones, the officials are gathering sufficient evidence on the extent of pollution and contamination of its waters.

After the aerial inspection, the officials gathered for an inter-agency meeting in preparation for the Senate investigation this Friday.

DOT Secretary Wanda Teo, DENR Undersecretary Ernesto Adobo, and DENR Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna, among others, were present during the meeting.

Teo noted that even amid reports of environmental problems in Boracay, tourism remains vibrant in the island.

But Mario, a 32-year-old hat vendor in Boracay who declined to reveal his surname, said that since the government’s plan to temporary close the island from tourism activities was made public, it has affected his and other ambulant vendors’ livelihood.

Mario, who relies on the crowds for his livelihood, said there were fewer tourists coming to the island in the past few days.

It has become evident with his regular earnings from an average of P8,000 per day, which is now down to about P2,000-P3,000 per day.

He said most of the ambulant vendors in Boracay have been complaining of lesser earnings.

Selling hats has been his family’s only source of livelihood for the past four years.

And with seven children to feed, the closure of Boracay island to tourist activities will inflict a huge blow on Mario’s family.

Should the government implements the temporary closure of the island to ease the negative impact of heavy tourism, he said he will just follow what the government deems beneficial for Boracay.

Another vendor, Rene, said he will just look for an alternative livelihood for the meantime. He has been selling sunglasses to tourists and visitors for the past four years.

The fate of the vendors and establishment workers in the island will partly rely on the decision of the Senate after its investigation scheduled this Friday.

The Senate will conduct an onsite inspection of the island before the Senate-led inquiry in the afternoon.

One of the issues that they will look into is the compliance of resorts and establishments to existing environment and tourism laws.

The roughly 1,000-hectare Boracay Island recently made headlines when President Duterte threatened to close it due to overdevelopment, congestion, and escalating environmental degradation.

Tourism Accolades for The Philippines

These 7,107 islands are finally getting the recognition they deserve. After being perennially ignored for a long time in favor of other exotic Asian locales, the Philippines is now among the emerging destinations shaking up the world of travel. Thanks to aggressive marketing campaigns and effective branding strategies undertaken by the Tourism Department and supported by the the Filipino public here and abroad, Philippine tourism is on the brink of a renaissance.

Travel guide creator and publisher Lonely Planet included the Philippines in the list of top 10 countries to visit in 2015 in its “Best In Travel 2015” guidebook—one of only two Asian countries on the tally. (The other is Singapore, which takes the top spot.)

The write-up on the Web site states, “Many would say the time is well overdue for the Philippines to be recognized as the next big travel destination in Southeast Asia,” citing its “beautiful coastlines, fringed by dive-tastic coral reefs, sprinkled with sunbathe-ready white sand, backed by swaying palm trees and dotted with simple resorts of nipa-palm thatched huts.”

It adds that there are “plenty” of live-changing experiences (such as “clinging to the back of a jeepney speeding through the crowded streets of Metro Manila”), as well as “street parades, food festivals, sports tournaments and live music shows.”

From “hundreds of places that are exciting right now,” the destinations that made the recommendations guide are “just 10 countries, 10 regions and 10 cities,” each “chosen for its topicality, unique experiences and ‘wow’ factor.” (“Best In Travel 2015” is now on sale through www.lonelyplanet.com for $14.99.)

In a separate story on the Lonely Planet Web site, writer Trent Holden raves about the nation’s capital. He says, “Boasting everything from craft beer, street food and speakeasy bars, to live music and a contemporary art scene, Manila is emerging as one of Asia’s most happening capitals,” crediting the development to “a new generation of fun-loving Manileños determined to put it back on the map.”

The country is also on the radar of luxury travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler. Its Readers’ Choice Awards for Top Islands in the World named Palawan as the number-one choice and Boracay as the 12th.

Meanwhile, travel industry publication TTG Asia, a licensee of Travel Trade Gazette, hailed the Philippines “Destination of the Year,” an award bestowed upon the “most outstanding destination [in the region] for taking proactive steps and initiatives towards the development and promotion of the travel industry.”

All these are expected to raise the profile of the country in 2015, which the DOT declared as Visit the Philippines Year, “an invitation for all to experience the enduring promise of more fun in the Philippines.”

World Tourism Day Run Highlights Tourism and Water

The Philippines Department of Tourism – Centraluzon, together with the Alliance of Travel and Tour Agencies of Pampanga (ATTAP) and the Pampanga Agents Travel Society (PATS), will lead the celebration of WORLD TOURISM DAY on September 29, 2013, Sunday, with a massive FUN RUN at the Clark Parade Grounds starting at 5:00 in the morning. The Mindanao Tourism Council is ready for the "Southern Invasion" from May 20-21, 2011 with a delegation of its officers, travel operators, members of the media (I am glad, I'll be joining!) and other tourism stakeholders for the biggest beach party in Southern Philippines.

Wellness and Medical Tourism in The Philippines

Since living in the Philippines for good, I have always observed the country's world-class physicians, very often a modern technology and the so very true brand of caring and compassion of Filipinos. no wonder that wellness and medical tourism in the Philippines is becoming more and more important as the country positions itself as a premier gloabl destination.

One thing is very clear: the pool of foreign tourist patients and health buffs in the Philippines is increasing dramatically. The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) is doing well, pushing tour operators to develop more medical and wellness tourism packages. that will cater to the growing number of foreign patients visiting this country nowadays and in the future. 

I am not sure if this will materialize: The DOT honestly expects the Philippines  to corner a total of three billion US$ (!?) from the global medical tourism industry by 20154, if more or less 200,000 foreign patients arrive here annually. I wish these will figures really become true - for the sake of the Philippines. 

Of course, the innate hospitality of the Filipinos is very well-known, but health care providers should also constantly upgrade their facilities to be at par with world-class standards.

More Complaints in Bureau of Immigration

Said to say: since a couple weeks the complaints regarding the personnel performance in several branches of the Philippine Bureau of Immigration augment. Good to know, that the B.I. is evaluating the performances of its personnel, especially assigned at the Ninoy Aquino international Airport in Manila and other ports following numerous complaints from the public of poor service.

The BI officer-in-charge Ronaldo Ledesma has ordered supervisors to immediately submit personnel evaluation and performance reports of all immigration officers assigned to the immigration arrival and departure counters as part of the bureau's thrust to improve efficiency and service delivery.

Ledesma said he issued the order after receiving reports that many immigration officers were not in their designated counters even when there were long queues of passengers waiting for their turn to be processed. I also learned this from several news reports and some good friends, who arrived in the Philippines last week via Manila.

I really like Ledesma's statement saying, "As immigration officers they are mandated by law to perform their duties without utmost zeal and dedication. They should be in their counters every time a plane lands at the airport." very well said, Sir! Let's hope so!

One thing more: Ledesma said he also ordered the bureau's training director to design a new training module for immigration officers to enhance the service delivery in the country's various ports. Good luck!
