Binibining Pilipinas 2024 winners reveal their favorite beauty queens

Jul 14, 2024 03:47 PM

By Robert R. Requintina

In a moment of vulnerability, the newly crowned queens of Binibining Pilipinas 2024 expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the fans' support and acknowledged their pivotal role in the pageant community. They emphasize the need for sensitivity in comments, as they, too, are human.

Binibining Pilipinas International 2024 Myrna Esguerra and Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2024 Jasmin Bungay made the appeal during their visit to the Manila Bulletin main office in Intramuros last July 12.

"We appreciate your support. Thank you for posting. Without you, pageants would not have reached this far. But we must be sensitive about what we say because we are also human," said Myrna.

She added: "We are not perfect, and we commit mistakes. But that doesn't mean we can be criticized that much to the point you will break a woman down. Let's be kind to one another."

Jasmin said, "To the pageant fans, two things: we appreciate you guys. We thank you for all the support throughout the pageant journey. You are the reason why pageants are still thriving and relevant in the Philippines and why many people and ladies aspire to be beauty queens.

"And No. 2, I hope the pageant community is kinder to one another, especially the ladies. We are on a platform where we are open to criticism, but that does not give us the license to bring a lady down. I hope we embody pageants, which are women's empowerment. We empower women regardless of how they look and regardless of size. The standard now is diverse, and we are starting to appreciate different kinds of beauty," Jasmin said.

Pilipinas International 2024; Mae Kimberly De Luna, winner, 2024 Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award;  Bb. Pilipinas Globe 2024 Jasmin Bungay; and Trisha Martinez, Bb. Pilipinas 2024 second runner-up.

Emotional

At the Manila Bulletin office, pageant veteran Trisha Martinez, who placed 2nd runner-up in the Bb. Pilipinas 2024 beauty contest, became emotional as she remembered the criticisms she faced from fans during the prestigious national pageant on July 7.

"There's too many to mention. Although she was not there, it was Mariel De Leon. We have a similar body type. So, I was body-shamed for being a bit bigger than the prototype of a beauty queen.

"So I'm size-medium, I am size-large. So when I knew Mariel was crowned, I think in 2017, I thought na puwede rin pala. So Mariel was a huge part of my motivation," Trisha said.

Jasmin was visibly moved at this moment.

"Whenever Ate Trisha mentions bashing, I feel that the people outside do not know what's happening inside. If you ask any of the ladies kung mananalo so Trisha, kung may reklamo sila just because of her extra excess, walang makakapag-sabi. We see how she is throughout the journey. If she won a crown that night, no one would contest because of her size.

b2.jpeg

"People say Ate Trish was a front-runner; some would say na hindi because she's big. Pero sa amin talaga, she is a deserving winner," said Jasmin.

Trisha commented: "Last year, when I joined Binibining Pilipinas, I was not bashed. I was one of the fan favorites.

"Pero hindi nila nakita yung part of me na malaki ako. But the second time was difficult because one single mistake, people would see you.

"This time yung body ko ang napansin nila. I improved on my pasarela and my communication skills. Pero hindi nila napansin yun.

"Pero I became a runner-up and I could still see comments na hindi raw kasi ako nag-diet kaya runner-up lang siya. It hurt so much," she said.

b3.jpeg

Trisha, who shed tears, said she felt her efforts for this year's competition were invalidated. She believes there will always be bashers in her life.

"But you know what, kahit na ano pa ang marating mo sa buhay, there will always be trolls. May comment talaga sila sa'yo. That's part of being a beauty queen," Trisha also said.

Myrna said criticisms do not define a person, but "you define who you are."

She added: "Comments that matter will come from people who matter. The people you love."

"Ate Trish, we love you," Jasmin said.

b4.jpeg

Favorite beauty queens

The Binibinis continued to answer the question about their favorite beauty queens.

"As for favorite beauty queens, I go for the current ones. I would say Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray.  Dalawa talaga. Hindi kasi ako makapili," Jasmin said.

She also said: "Aside from bringing honor and pride to the country by winning Miss Universe, they represented multi-faceted women. Like Pia, now she is venturing into an image of being an author and international brand ambassador. So, it just attests to how far we can go as women.

"Even with Catriona Gray, during her journey, she set the standard so high for the next beauty queens, for us, the next generation, to further develop ourselves into holistic women so that they will not look down on beauty queens. During her stint, she used the platform to introduce our country well. So I admire both of them because they represent powerful women," said Jasmin.

b5.jpeg

Myrna voted for Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj.

"She was there during the coronation. During rehearsals, we gathered around her, and she prayed for everyone. Sobrang special ng moment na yun because maraming girls ang umiyak during that moment.  It tells a lot about how God works in our lives. As a born-again Christian, it's amazing how God can make your life bigger than you can imagine.

"In life, it's not enough that you are doing better. There should be a purpose for why you are doing things you are good at. So I love how Venus influenced people, and she's fearless in showing how God transformed her life. I applaud her for that," the beauty queen from Abra said.

Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award

Crystal Jean Dela Cruz, 2024 Bb. Pilipinas first runner-up, said she also admires Venus.

"I can relate to her because she came from the province with no water or electricity, and I felt that, too. Even if I look like a girl with a multicultural background, I have to make my way to the places I want to go. She has changed many lives by bringing positivity and inspiration to me and other girls. She came from humble beginnings, and she worked her way up. I like to be her. During the rehearsals, I saw her. I was a fangirl at that moment. You can feel her authenticity, and she's like a storyteller to me," she said.

Mae Kimberly De Luna, winner of the Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award, said Samantha Bernardo inspires her.

"The first time I saw her, it was love at first sight. She's so beautiful, and I met her two years ago. I learned her stories, and that's when I realized she inspired me. But if I were to choose,  dalawa sila: Samantha Bernardo, and Pia Wurtzbach. We've seen their struggles and challenges in Binibining Pilipinas, which left a mark. They said never to give up on your dreams. They also came from humble beginnings. And no matter their challenges, they fight for it," said Kim.

  • "We really want to showcase the beauty of our country," explains Executive Producer Vanessa Verzosa. "The Philippines is really blessed with natural resources. And that's what we want to highlight in the show, inspiring Filipinos to appreciate and love our country."

FB_IMG_1689132494682-7.jpg

Long before the "Love the Philippines!" campaign of the Department of Tourism has become controversial, there is already one magazine show that promotes love for the Philippines, titled IHeartPh.

Now on its 8th season, the magazine show continues to deliver its promise by showcasing more inspiring stories and aspirational features.
"We really want to showcase the beauty of our country," explains Executive Producer Vanessa Verzosa. "The Philippines is really blessed with natural resources. And that's what we want to highlight in the show, inspiring Filipinos to appreciate and love our country."

Piloted in 2018 on CNN Philippines, IHeartPh spreads good vibes here and abroad. In fact, it has been chosen by the Taiwanese government for its tourism promotion.

Serving as a regular TV program partner for Philippine promotion, the beauty of Taiwan has been showcased several times. The most recent of which is the "Love Fun Taiwan" campaign.

"We are proud that our show is appreciated outside the country," beams Verzosa. "Maybe, the reason why the Taiwanese government trusts us is that they see the direction of the show, which is really to promote inspiring stories and aspirational features. The show is aligned to their goal."

IHeartPH has gained the trust and support of big and small companies, global and local brands as well as famous and ordinary personalities in sharing their stories.

"Every story we do is unique and there's always a good takeaway, not only for the viewers but also for me!," shares program host Valerie Tan.

Tan gets to immerse herself in the many stories featured in the program. She enjoys every feature. One of the features she immensely enjoyed was her visit to the Amis tribe, the largest indigenous ethnic group in Taiwan.

There she got a glimpse of how they live, fish, cook, and even dance! "It's interesting to note that just like us Filipinos, they love to sing and dance!"

"Another memorable feature is the rags to riches story of a member of an essential oil company. This proves that your past doesn't define your future, and you can use the challenges you encountered to fuel you for success."

Tan adds that iHeartPh highlights these positive features with that Filipino touch.

"I love experiencing new things and going to new places," shares Tan. "But more than that, my most favorite part is meeting people from all walks of life, connecting with them, and sharing their stories to our viewers."

Eight seasons and counting, IHeartPh is here to stay in the heart of our Filipino viewers. True to its core, the program has been consistently uplifting the image of the Philippines and the Filipinos - spreading good vibes. The program advocates the love and appreciation of our country, helping the government to amplify its tourism campaign.

"There are way too many reasons why I love the Philippines!," volunteers Tan. "First, our beaches are the best in the world. We have a lot of natural resources and wonders.

Undoubtedly, there's still so much to explore. Second, Filipino cuisine! Anthony Bourdain himself said it when he referred to Cebu lechon as the 'best pig, ever'.

Lastly, the warmth and hospitality of the Filipino people are unrivaled. Pinoys are usually kind and warm, and always carry a smile on our faces."

"Our commitment is to showcase world-class visual narratives to our viewers," says program director Jallawee Beritan. "We listen to our viewers because they deserve a program that does not only feed their senses but their soul."

"You can be assured you'll feel inspired after each episode," quips Tan. "No matter where our show takes us; at the end of the day, the Philippines will always be home," And IHeartPh will always be at the heart of every Filipino.

Produced by TV8 Media Productions, IHeartPh Season 8 airs this coming Sunday, July 16, 7 PM on CNN Philippines. Fresh episode every Sunday at 7 PM, with replays on Tuesdays at 4:30 PM.

Philippine television is alive once again after three daily noon shows aired simultaneously and fought for audience, ratings, and advertisements.

Last Saturday, July 1, Filipino viewers were captivated by the return of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and their Dabarkads on their latest show "EAT" aired on TV5. Vice Ganda was cheered as he made a grand entrance in a helicopter to launch "It's Showtime" on GTV Channel. Fans of "Eat Bulaga" on GMA expressed their excitement as Isko Moreno, Paolo Contis and the other hosts welcomed TVJ to their new home and promised to deliver even more fun and entertainment.

E.A.T. is the title of new VJ show

E.A.T. is the title of the legendary noontime show of Tito, Vic, Joey, and the Legit Dabarkads which premiered July 1, at its new home on TV5, the Kapatid network.

The whole gang was treated to a rousing, emotional welcome at the TV5 HQ in Mandaluyong City. Aside from being shown on TV5 free TV, the show was also aired on Cignal, Sat Lite, and streamed on Youtube and Facebook. As previously announced, viewing stations in malls and public places were also set up so that legions of fans can join in the fiesta.

TVJ's family members were there to give their moral support and were seen as teary-eyed at one point. Among them Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto, Helen Gamboa (wife of Tito Sotto), Pauleen Luna (wife of Vic Sotto), Eileen Macapagal - De Leon (wife of Joey), Oyo Boy Sotto, and Kristine Hermosa.

The hosts said  the title E.A.T. stands for a lot of things (Eto Ang Title, Eto Ang Tadhana, Eto Ang True, etc.) but it appears that they will use the title until there's an official decision on who is the rightful owner of the term "Eat Bulaga!"

"Simula ng bagong pakikipagsapalaran. Dito tayo bubuo ng kuwento. Ito na ang bago nating simula," TVJ said as they made a dramatic entrance to the TV5 studio wearing red shirts. The show stretched to almost five hours with the trio singing classic OPM hits like " Ïkaw Lang ang Aking Mahal" and " Awitin Mo At Isasayaw Ko."

Paolo Ballesteros dressed up as Vice Ganda from the rival noontime while Ryzza Mae Dizon impersonated Miss Tapia. The rest of the Dabarkads such as Maine Mendoza, Allan K, Wally Bayola, Jose Manalo, Carren Eistrup, and Ryan Agoncillo delighted the audience with their song and dance numbers.

The show's special guest was megastar Sharon Cuneta  She sang her hits " Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko" and " Bituing Walang Ningning" with TVJ.

Sharon, who is the niece of Helen Gamboa-Sotto, took a swipe at TVJ's former producers when she remarked: "Karangalan ko pong narito ako dahil bumalik sa ere ang ating show ng TVJ. Pero talagang sumama ang loob ko dahil dapat inalagaan kayo. Ayoko ng pinagdaanan nyo. You didn't deserve that."

(It's an honor for me to be here now that your show is back on air. But I admit I was hurt because they should have taken care of you. I did not like what you went through. You didn't deserve that.)

E.A.T. will be shown on the noontime slot of the Kapatid network from Mondays to Saturdays. In its launch episode, it introduced some of the segments that people can start joining starting next week. Some of these are the kiddie contests " Wala Ka Sa Apo Ko," " Vortas 5" and "Wag Kayong Ganun" which replace " Bawal Ang Judgmental."

'Eat Bulaga' congratulates TVJ

The revamped "Eat Bulaga" concluded with a moving and inspiring statement from its hosts during its first month-sary celebration on GMA Network on July 1.

"Ang bagong 'Eat Bulaga,' hindi na ito tungkol sa mga hosts. Tungkol ito sa mga viewers," said Isko Moreno, at the end of the program. "That's why kung mapapansin ninyo, bagong pamamaraan ng pagbibigay saya. Kaya nga tinatawag naming tulong at saya. Yun ang handog ng 'Eat Bulaga.' "

(The new Eat Bulaga is no longer about the hosts. It's about the viewers. That's why if you notice, we have a new method of giving fun. That's why we call it service and fun. That's the offering of Eat Bulaga.)

Isko continued: "Minsan sa buhay natin meron tayong napapamahal sa isang bagay o isang tao. But life must go on. Kapag iniwan ka, palitan mo agad. Tama naman di ba? Yung magdyo-dyowa? Kailangan ninyong mag-move on."

(Sometimes in our lives, we fall in love with something or someone else. But life must go on. If they leave, you change them immediately. Isn't that right? You have to move on.)

"If there's one good thning, eto pangkalahatan na ito, about what is happening in noontime show today, ultin ko, buffet na po. Marami na kayong mapagpipilian. In our own little way, kami'y magsisikap, na makatulong at makapagpasaya. Basta ang aasahan ninyo, ang bagong 'Eat Bulaga,' ay tungkol na sa viewers."

(If there's one good thing, here's the general thing, about what is happening in the noontime show today, I repeat, it's a buffet. You have a lot to choose from. In our own little way, we'll try to help and make you happy. The new 'Eat Bulaga,' is about the viewers.)

Paolo Contis, one of the hosts, said: "Katulad nga ng sinabi ni Yorme, ang noontime (show) ngayon ay parang buffet, pero sana, kami ang lagi ninyong piliin. Happy July 1. Today is our month-sary."

(Just like Yorme said, today's noontime (show) is like a buffet, but hopefully, you will always choose us.)

At the start of the program, Paolo said: "Masasabi nating Ito na ang bagong era ng noontime show habit ninyo. Alam namin na updated kayo sa mga nangyayari. Gaya ninyo excited din po kami.

(We can say that this is the new era of your noontime show habit. We know that you are updated with what is happening. We are as excited as you are.)

"Para sa karamihan isa itong malaking kumpetisyon. Pero para sa programa tulad ng 'Eat Bulaga,' na 44 years na na nagpapasaya, hindi po ito kumpetisyon. Ito ay aming inspirasyon."

(For most it's a big competition. But for a program like 'Eat Bulaga,' which has been entertaining for 44 years, it's not a competition. It's our inspiration.)

Isko said: "Mahal namin kayo. May sakit o wala, the show must go on. Lalabis-labisin na namin. To Tito Sen, Vic, and Joey and their Dabarkads, congratulations sa inyo!

(We love you. Sick or not, the show must go on. We're going to go all out. To Tito Sen, Vic, and Joey and their Dabarkads, congratulations to you!)

"Masaya kami may bago na kayong tahanan. Masaya kami kasi marami ng pagpipilian ang mga tao. Marami na kayong choices.

(We are happy that you have a new home. We are happy because people have many choices. You have many choices.)

"Taos puso sampu ng aming mga kasama, staff, production, the management, TAPE Incorporated, we warmly welcome and congratulate Tito, Vic and Joey. Congratulations po!" Isko added.

On May 31, TVJ and their Dabarkads left GMA Network following issues with TAPE Inc., producer of the longest-running noontime show "Eat Bulaga."

Replacing TVJ and Dabarkads were Paolo, Alexa Miro, Bayani Agbayani, Buboy Villar, Betong Sumaya, Cassy Legaspi, and Mavy Legaspi. Other hosts were added to the show, including Isko who debuted in the program on June 10.
