Globe warns vs online offers for SIM registration assistance

by Jonathan Castillo

Globe cautions its customers against offers of SIM registration assistance online and advises them not to share personal information to protect their data security and privacy.

There are already reports of individuals taking advantage of the SIM registration requirement. They offer their services through social media either for free or for a fee and request the name, photo, valid ID, birthday, cell phone number, and address of SIM users.

Such personal information, when in the wrong hands, may be used to impersonate their owners, access their accounts, steal money or other fraudulent activities. Identity thieves may also open accounts in another person’s name, run up debt, or commit crimes, causing damaged reputation and financial problems.

“We want to remind our customers to be wary of these types of offers and to only use official channels for their SIM registration,” said Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe Chief Privacy Officer. “Your personal information is valuable and we urge you to protect it from those who may want to use it for unlawful purposes.”

Instead of seeking help from unknown individuals, customers may register their SIMs for free at https://new.globe.com.ph/simreg. Registration through the GlobeOne app will also start later this month. They may also ask a trusted family member or friend for assistance.

Starting February 2023, Globe will also have assisted registration sites for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and users of basic or feature phones. The list of Globe’s registration sites will be announced through our official websites in the coming weeks.

There are 87.9 million SIMs under the Globe network. So far, over 7 million have registered.

To make the SIM registration process accessible and convenient for all, the company is offering multiple channels for registration. Customers are encouraged to take advantage of these options and complete their SIM registration before the deadline on April 26, 2023 to avoid the risk of SIM deactivation.

The SIM Registration Act, which requires mobile phone users in the Philippines to register their SIMs with their service providers, is being implemented to address the growing problem of fraudulent activities enabled by anonymous SIM use.

Great music, fun memories at GDay festivities

Thousands gathered over the weekend for fun and exciting activities Globe held for its highly anticipated "917 #ExtraGDayEveryday," the biggest GDay celebration yet.

Events were held at the Circuit Events Ground Makati and the Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa City on September 17 or "917 day," without adverse incident except for apparent attempts to jam mobile signals at both venues.

"Our 917 GDay this year marked the first time we had many on-ground events, and we are glad that our customers went out to participate in them. We really wanted to pursue face to face events which we have been missing since the pandemic. We are only too happy that our customers found time to enjoy the festivities," said Jerome Patalud, head of Globe Rewards.

The GMusic Fest drew thousands of spectators at Circuit Events Ground Makati for a day of great music and fun at experiential booths, bringing home Globe freebies along with new memories.

Over 6,000 spectators came for the half-day event, staying throughout the show to enjoy the lineup of world-class artists Globe brought together to regale its valued customers.

Enjoying the GMusic Fest was Kathlyn Guinto, a Globe customer for 15 years now. On Twitter, she raved about seeing Thai singer Phum Viphurit and the "queens" from Drag Race Philippines.

"It was my first time watching Phum Viphurit perform live. Finally! WOW. WOW. WOW.... Thank you for bringing them here, Globe!" she said in her post.

G Music Fest also featured K-Pop group bugAboo, whose G Music Fest appearance was their first time performing live in the Philippines, and top Filipino acts such as KAIA, Matthaios, The Juans, Unique Salonga, and I Belong to the Zoo.

Festival goers were also safely ferried in and out of the venue through free rides on GET electric buses deployed for the event.

UNCOMMON, ODD, UNACCUSTOMED

My column in Mindanao Daily, BusinessWeek Mindanao and Cagayan de Oro Times

Our globe and its population bear innumerable strange facts. Following many people's opinion, this world shows mostly worried characteristics and symptoms nowadays. No wonder. Just try to consume and digest today's headlines and news from all around the globe. Yes, I'm experiencing very strange feelings while watching and reading the daily news.

On the other hand: It is a world with quickly bridged distances -  our Mother earth is becoming smaller and smaller. Any tourist, even with little time and with only a small budget, can travel to other faraway cultures. But joining them as well as different races and religious communities requires first of all, great care, tact, instinctive feelings, empathy, and logical ideas.

The stranger whom we meet for the first time during a business meeting, for example, maybe an uncommon, odd and extraordinary guy. He may be someone from a foreign country, who speaks another language and whose skin is of another color. He may be a migrant, a restless hiker or the expatriate in our neighborhood.

The foreigner beside you and me can become a provocation or a challenge. Strangeness can become exoticism. Maybe, that's why my family and I decided to move to the Philippines. On the other hand - going abroad can open other and even better horizons. We must not feel as "a stranger in paradise". By the way, I never did!

However, a migrant bears a juxtaposition of optimism (even calculated optimism!), confused feelings, nostalgia, and homesickness. Yes guys, during the first  years of my expat's life here in the Philippines, the round trip ticket was always in my mind, because no one among us can escape his native roots.

But, I am really a lucky guy. I experienced an amazing tolerance in the Philippines. A real practicing tolerance. Until  now! Already, during my first business meetings, I met supportive, forbearing and  broad minded people. A wonderful mix of different cultures without giving up own identities... .

The following quotation remains always in my mind: "I have nothing to offer but blood, sweat and tears!" - The British statesman and former Prime Minister Sir Winston L. Churchill (1874-1965) said this in 1940 - certainly, in a sad interrelation during World War II. Anyway, I like that remark. Blood, sweat and tears. Because of new challenges and changes - also as an expatriate in the Philippines doing business here.

Every new challenge in a strange country means a change. Changes in life are necessary and important. Let's alter or make a difference; let's put one thing for another; let's shift; let's quit one state for another; let's take fresh clothing. Let's burn the "lock fat" away. Blood, sweat and tears - and remember: nothing comes from anything.

A burning globe

A burning globe

IN MY OPINIONKlaus Doring
Look around. Just any place on our globe. Yes, it’s burning. Natural disasters, terrorists attacks, war. Will be Asia another one? Heaven forbid – no!
As US, Japanese and South Korean warships carried out joint exercises, Pyongyang marked a national anniversary with an artillery drill. The saber-rattling coincided with a flurry of diplomatic activity in Tokyo.
On Wednesday (April 26, while writing this piece) North Korea conducted a large-scale conventional live-fire military drill in the region of Wonsan on its east coast, South Korea’s Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed on Tuesday. In a statement, the South’s military said it was “closely monitoring” the situation and “maintaining readiness.”
Indeed, North Korea suffers a  crisis – South Korea remains relaxed! How long?
International concerns have been heightened in recent weeks that the North could soon carry out another nuclear test or missile launch, in defiance of United Nations sanctions. The reclusive country, where 40 percent of the population is undernourished according to the Global Hunger Index, often marks significant anniversaries with shows of military force. Although it was feared a nuclear test or ballistic missile launch might happen on Tuesday, no such test happened during the morning.
The harsh rhetoric continued from Pyongyang, with a top military general repeating that the North was ready to use preemptive strikes to defend itself. “The situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula is so tense that a nuclear war may break out due to the frantic war drills of the U.S. imperialists and their vassal forces for aggression,” General Pak Yong Sik told a major meeting of senior military and civilian officials.
The North Korea to US is very clear: ‘don’t mess with us’! Meanwhile the US nuclear submarine docks in Busan.
US President Donald Trump has vowed to prevent North Korea from becoming capable of striking the US with a nuclear missile and ruled out nothing including a military strike. As a show of force, he sent the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to waters off Korea. The fleet was carrying out drills with Japanese warships.
South Korea’s navy was also carrying out exercises with US destroyers in waters off the Korean peninsula.
As the drills continued, the US Navy said the nuclear-powered guided missile submarine USS Michigan arrived in the South Korean port of Busan on Tuesday. The submarine was not expected to participate in joint naval exercises.
Trump’s UN ambassador Nikki Haley said the US wasn’t looking for a fight with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un and wouldn’t attack “unless he gives us reason to do something.” She praised China’s increasing pressure on North Korea, seen by Washington as key to reigning in Pyongyang’s military ambitions.
Meanwhile we can observe an increased diplomatic activity. Top envoys from Japan, South Korea and the US held talks in Tokyo, with US envoy Joseph Yun saying he and his counterparts agreed to coordinate “all actions” on North Korea. They also agreed China had a key role in pressuring Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear and missile program. According to Japan’s foreign ministry, China’s envoy for North Korea was also due to visit Tokyo for talks.
In my opinion, only peace talks help. Let’s continue praying for peace. Not only in Asia.

Really, it's an other first in prepaid history: the new SMART BUDDY SIM keep no-expiry reserve load. It's indeed like having a secret pocket in your SIM. Wow, imagine: now, addition to regular load and call & text load, SMART BUDDY gives you no-expiry reserve load that stays safe in your sim's RESERVE LOAD wallet until you're ready to use it. Just draw from your RESERVE LOAD and convert it to regular airtime or any call and text offer. Just visit your favorite retail outlet.

When I browse the Internet, I found another interesting article: Phone a friend with GLOBE Tattoo Broadband! I am sure you agree with me: Have you ever had one of those days when you slept through your alarm and woke up sweetly a half-hour later, only to be enveloped by the icy panic that pushes you to rush in a frenzy to start your hectic day grind? You leave the house in record time, waving down a ride, yet with a sinking feeling you've forgotten something. That's when it hits you: your precious mobile phone is sitting comfortably on your nightstand at home. Yipee, this just happened to me last week. I really started smiling while reading this.

In a pinch, GLOBE has the lifesaver for us. All we need to do is whip out our laptops, plug in our new GLOBE Tatoo Broadband stick, and we cal call away, straight from our PC. Yes, I also find a website: surf over to www.globe.com.ph/tattoo.

We are really lucky under the SUN... .
