GMA Network and Ayala Foundation team up to honor the works of Dr. Jose Rizal

by Manila Bulletin Entertainment

The production and creative team of GMA Network’s top-rating and phenomenal series ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’ take part in the latest #MagingMagiting advocacy program of Ayala Foundation, Inc. which highlights the heroism of Dr. Jose Rizal.

This Dec. 29, Ayala Foundation will premiere on its Facebook page the seventh edition of the Digital Magiting Conference with the theme “Rizal Revealed: Muling Kilalanin ang Magiting na Bayani.”

Present during the recorded digicon were GMA Senior Vice President for Entertainment Group Lilybeth G. Rasonable; Vice President for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy; Creative Consultant of Maria Clara at Ibarra, Suzette Doctolero; the show’s director, Zig Dulay; and Kapuso Drama King Dennis Trillo who plays the role of Ibarra.

Rasonable recounts the moment they pitched the exceptional concept of Maria Clara at Ibarra for the first time, “One of the most nerve-wracking processes para sa aming mga producer ay ang mag-present sa top management lalo na kapag ang konsepto ay kakaiba. But I am proud to say that those concepts were the ones greenlighted by our bosses. And we thank our top management because that is the reason why the Entertainment Group has been able to present a really wide range of topics.”

Ching-Sy also shares how they came up with the story of a Gen Z who enters the world of Noli Me Tangere, “At that time we were looking for material that will challenge the drama department in all aspects of production. It was Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdes who came up with the idea. Sabi niya, ‘why don’t we do a retelling of Noli and El Fili?’ And then Suzette Doctolero took the challenge and she added the element of Gen Z to resonate with the younger audience.”

Meanwhile, Doctolero highlights the nationalism of Rizal as seen in his works and now in the hit series, Maria Clara at Ibarra, “Ang mga akda ni Rizal ay napaka-relevant pa rin hanggang ngayon.

Viewers of the digicon are primarily public school teachers. Hence, GMA Network and Ayala Foundation aim to inspire them to see Rizal in a new light and therefore share with their students a newfound enthusiasm for his novels.

“Each and every one of us sa broadcast industry has that responsibility to promote love of country. Tulad sakin na dekada na ang binilang sa pagpo-produce ng programa, nandun ‘yung gusto mong magpatawa, magpaiyak, at magbigay ng impormasyon pero dahil sa ganitong programa na naghihikayat sa kabataan na mahalin ang bansa nila, mare-realize mo na you have so much power to help shape a country,” Rasonable said.

Ching-Sy added that Rizal is an epitome of the greatness and brilliance of Filipinos, “Bilang media practitioner, mae-embody ko ang kagitingan ni Rizal by sharing these stories. I hope kaya nating i-showcase sa buong mundo ang artistic excellence ng mga Pilipino. Kung paano ang directing, acting, design, and cinematography, we have to share to the world how beautiful our stories are.”

Moreover, Dennis believes that through his craft, he can manifest the patriotism of Rizal, “Pinatunayan ni Rizal ang kagitingan niya sa pamamagitan ng paglaban kung ano ang tama at makatarungan. Malaki ang role namin para ipakita sa kabataan ang ganda ng bansa at mga katangian natin para mas lalo nilang mahalin ang pinagmulan nila.”

Catch Maria Clara at Ibarra, weeknights at 8 p.m. on GMA and at 9:40 p.m. on GTV.

Viewers abroad can also catch the program via GMA Pinoy TV. For more stories about the Kapuso Network, visit www.GMANetwork.com.

GMA Network hosted a historic contract signing with ABS-CBN to license some of Star Cinema’s most popular and well-loved movies.

The news was confirmed by the two media giants via simultaneous reports on “TV Patrol” and “24 Oras” on April 5.

Present during the virtual event were GMA Network President and Chief Operating Officer Gilberto R. Duavit Jr.; Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Felipe S. Yalong; GMA Network Films, Inc. President and Programming Consultant to the Chairman and CEO Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdes; First Vice President for Program Management Department Jose Mari R. Abacan; Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications Angel Javier-Cruz; Assistant Vice President For Program Management Department Mitzi Garcia; and Assistant Vice President for Corporate Communications Jojo Aquio.

Laurel; Vice President of Corporate Communications Kane Errol C. Choa; PR Director Christelle Belmonte; and PR Manager Tonichi Tataro.

“Every storyteller’s dream is to have as many people as possible experience their creations. And now, because of the kindness of our friends at GMA, we have the special opportunity to bring our Kapamilya stories to a new audience. We hope the Kapuso find joy and inspiration in viewing our Star Cinema movies, and we also look forward to a new era of friendship and cooperation within our small industry,” said Katigbak.

Duavit said: “Because the significance of our partnership today ushers in the possibility of a far broader set of conversations, potential partnership, and cooperation that will have the benefit not only neutrally to GMA and ABS-CBN but as importantly, if not, perhaps, more importantly to the benefit of the public we both serve, the Filipino viewer. Looking forward since we have, as they say, broken the ice. There’s great optimism that these conversations will continue or start and continue, and we look forward to the possibility of this type of opportunity again, moving forward.”

Some of the notable movies that will air on GMA-7 include “Alone/Together,” “How to Be Yours,” “Till My Heartaches End,” “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank,” “Ang Cute ng Ina Mo!,” “It Takes a Man and a Woman,” “Just The Way You Are,” “Fantastica,” “Can We Still Be Friends?,” “Finally Found Someone,” “No Other Woman,” “Won’t Last A Day Without You,” “Must Be…Love,” “The Panti Sisters,” “Isa Pa With Feelings,” “James & Pat & Dave,” “Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay,” “Feng Shui,” “Suddenly It’s Magic,” and “I Love You, Hater.”

Prior, GMA teased about the historic collaboration.

“Ang mga pelikulang napapanuod sa GMA, madadagdagan. Dahil ang dating impossible, mangyayari. Abangan ngayong Abril,” said the voice-over, while the logos of GMA Pictures, Regal Entertainment, Viva Films, and OctoArts Films were being flashed on screen. “The START of new age of television,” this text also appeared,  emphasizing the word “STAR.”

This is not the first time that GMA and ABS-CBN have joined forces.

In 2020, Kapamilya star Kathryn Bernardo worked with Kapuso actor Alden Richards on the highest-grossing Filipino film “Hello, Love, Goodbye,” directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and produced by Star Cinema.

Andrea Torres - Newest Kapuso Leading Lady

GMA-7 is continuously developing new leading ladies. After Bianca King, Kylie Padilla and Jackie Rice, a new set of Kapuso female artists are being launched as the next important stars of the network. One of them is a girl named Andrea Torres, the new Cecilia Fulgencio in the afternoon series 'Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga' with Mikael Daez as Carlos Miguel Altamonte.
Wait, but who is this girl named Andrea Torres? Is she new in the business?
Andrea Elizabeth Torres was born on the 4th of May, 1990. She first started her career in showbusiness as a print ad model. During her early teens, she became one of the female contestants in the reality-based loveteam search of ABS-CBN called 'QPids'. That time, she was paired with Dominic Roco. It's fun to think that they're both with GMA-7 now.
She moved to Kapuso network and appeared in the teen show Ka-Blog as one of its main hosts. While hosting the show, she is also busy with college. She took up Communication Arts in the University of Sto. Tomas.
Just in mid 2011, she appeared in the afternoon series 'Blusang Itim'. It seems like her stint in the primetime show 'My Beloved' with Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera became her stepping stone to be noticed by the network.
Some of her movie credits include Loving You, Shake Rattle and Roll 9 and 10 and You To Me Are Everything.

Sarah and GMA Fight

GMA Network addressed all issues raised by Sarah Lahbati - starting from her posts in the social networking and microblogging site Twitter, which were eventually picked up by the media.

"Sarah Lahbati's Artist Management Contract with GMA Network is effective until February 21, 2015. There is no provision for leave of absence in said contract. Any leave is subject to prior agreement between the Network and Sarah. Therefore, Sarah's unilateral decision to go on leave, despite its earlier disapproval by the Network, is a violation of her contract with the Network. Further, her declared trip to Switzerland for an indefinite period, without the prior and approval of the Network, will be an additional violation of her contract!"

Klaro? No more comments.

GMA Network Goes Green

I said it already many, many times: I admire people, who go green taking care of our environment. Sure, also if those people are from the media. I have a lot of friends there - of course, also in GMA-Television-Network, which turns 60 this year.

GMA is really going beyond business as it counts among its priorities the corporate social responsibility of promoting environmental awareness and conservation. In a press release, one could learn that today GMA perpetuates eco-friendly practices and projects to counter the effects of environment degradation.

"GMA Network, as a media company, plays an important role helping save the environment, "said Carmencita G. Arce, consultant of the company's Corporate Affairs Division and one of the proponents of GMA's Network environmental advocacy program dubbed "Kapuso ng Kalikasan". GMA has implemented a number of "green initiatives, i.e. enegery and water conservations.

GMA Network is also conscious of proper waste disposal and has been implementing a waste management scheme that encourages employees to reduce, recycle,a and reuse office materials and supplies. Vry important - look at our surroundings, especially our rivers: they are full of trash. The drainage systems are also clogged by wastes of different kind.

Among any other things, of course, GMA-Network also produced special environmental documentaries like "Signos: Banta ng Nagbabagong Klima, which provided a comprehensive view of climate change. During the Earth Day Celebration, GMA Network produced a special "One Earth-One Journey", which showcased the essence of the Earth Day Celebration through music merged with visual art display that highlighted the importance of preserving our beloved Mother Earth.

Kudos to GMA-Network! Hopefully many other media institutions will follow!
