Is the Philippines really a collectivism society?

The Philippines is totally Collectivist.

But not on the National level like some Far East Asian countries. The Philippines is collectivist on the familial level.

Family is one of the biggest Filipino values. If not the biggest. Filipinos in general will put their family above everything. I can tell you this after decades of handling Filipino employees, and twice that living as an actual Filipino.

A Filipino will spill every drop of his blood if it meant making life a little easier for their family. You just need to look at the OFWs, the unsung heroes who keep the economy of the country afloat.

OFWs will work hard to earn qualifications and certifications, visas and permits to be allowed the privilege of working abroad, to slave and toil in a foreign land with no friends or family, working menial jobs like scrubbing toilets or wiping the ass of stinky old people, all to earn a meager paycheck, 80% of which is sent back home to their families at home, to support a mother and father who can’t work anymore, or to send a younger sibling to college.

Five of my cousins are like this. They went to the US, to England, to Germany just to work a job and send money back home to their families.

You can see the level of familial piety in this country, it is not just in the big things like that, but in the little things. Filipinos don’t leave their family to dry, and sons and daughters respect their elders and follow their counsel even if it is contrary to their own desires.

That is just how Filipinos roll.

Comval celebrates 119th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary

Compostela Valley Province---The provincial government of Compostela Valley joined the celebration of the Philippine Civil Service Anniversary with the theme: “Civil Service at 119: Upholding Integrity and a High Trust Society,” on September 2, 2019 at the capitol lobby, Cabidianan, NabunturanComval.

Attending the program were Governor Jayvee Tyron L. Uy together withComvalProvincial Director of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Nancy Alex Tuason, Regional Director of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Ma. Teresa Tuburan-Pacudan, Vice Governor Maricar S. Zamora, Provincial Officials, Provincial Government (PG) Heads and Assistant PG Heads, Heads of the National Agencies, officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the provincial capitol employees.

Director Tuason, congratulates all the members of the CSC for their dedication, sacrifices and loyalty to the Philippine Government.

 “Those who have been in the Civil Service for more than 20 or 30 years and those who are new to the civil service especially the millennial who prepared toward in the government instead of the private sector or going into business or going abroad you all deserve to be congratulated,” said Tuason

“You have won my admiration because the government needs young blood with fresh and proactive mind and strong conviction na kayanatinitoparasapagbabago,” she added.

 Tuason also explains about the importance of integrity in the government service. “Upholding integrity in our work is not a walk in the park, hindiganunkadali. It is emotionally challenging when we become friends with our clients and associate. The pakikisamais so important.

Meanwhile, the provincial government also celebrates the National Crime Prevention Week for the bureaucracy achievements and contributions of the men and women in uniform in government who uphold the country’s societal goals and overall mission.

 On the other hand Governor Uy, expressed his gratitude to the Comval CSC Director and the NAPOLCOM Regional Director for gracing the convocation program as jump-starting the Civil Service Month and the National Crime Prevention Week.

 “We have to observe those qualities of a good public servant isipkitaangmgafrontlinersnamgdeliver in terms of government services in our province,” said Governor Uy.

“We have to work with passion, we have to work that our clients and our constituents ngasilaangatoangbidapermi,” the governor added.

The anniversary celebration is also anchored on one of the “Ambition Natin 2040” key areas for development planning which is building a high trust society.

Society’s social weaklings?

Refusal and compassion characterize society’s attitude as regards social weaklings and handicapped people. It’s a topic which one gladly drives out, represses or tries to forget. I have written about this topic many times, although I have missed more about it.

Even in different groups, some segments of society are distant from them. The socially discriminated and handicapped people don’t correspond to performance, work, capacity, stress and competition in our daily surroundings. Opinions like these – well, that’s how people do it!

The anti-social slum inhabitant has not accepted his responsibility, and the antisocial confidence trickster, certainly not blind and without having difficulty in walking, doesn’t believe in us. That’s it! Finished!

The “bobo”, the alcoholic, the without means “gentleman of the road” – so what! Did everybody not choose his own living condition? In plain words: the ideals of success, ability, efficiency, and competitiveness in our performance-oriented society and its business life describe such fringe groups as “standard violators”, such as in failure, flop or slacker. But remember: a tax evasion or corruption is more costly than a social welfare client.

Do you have a social weakling or handicapped people in your surroundings – in your company? Mostly, these persons appear as a monotonous mass through the glasses of prejudices. How very painful!

Honestly, but true: hindrance and handicap drive into poverty many times. Prevailing opinion is that poverty is going for a fault. The affected people draw back themselves with a sensible sense of shame. And, have you given notice already: most handicapped people feel isolated in their surroundings. Meeting such people sometimes becomes even a bashful situation, while giving the appearance of normality. In my opinion: this must not be happened!

Sometimes we try to avoid any communication, because we might say something wrong. Then – just put a smile on your face, as I often did. I really plead for more integration. Let’s give “such people” autonomy and acceptance starting in school or kindergarten yet. Let’s increase more livable offers for organizations. Social weaklings and handicapped people don’t hinder, hamper or prevent us from living in a society with a much philanthropist face. We are all human beings.
