MUSIC, CHRISTMAS AND GOD

Are all terms in the right order? In logical sequence? For some of you, my dear readers, they must have passed out by a dozen. 

Honestly, writing about political topics is really tiring me. Especially now and today. While writing this piece, I am getting tons of political news.Yes, I am very well understanding everything. But why do I choose "Music, Christmas and God"? Again, the right (or wrong?) order doesn't matter. Really!

Christmas is just around the corner. Almost.  I become very thoughtful and melancholy during the season. That's okay. Maybe also you. I try to delete topics such as war, corruption, killing, pandemic,natural disasters et cetera et cetera pp. I even try to delete them here in my opinion. I try to look forward to Christmas with a happy heart.

Christmas is just around the corner. God is with me daily. He is my companion during every second of my life. And, what has this to do with music?

Music has been my second life companion for many years. I remember the day my parents first lugged the heavy accordion up our front stoop, taxing the small frame. They gathered me in the living room and opened the case  as if it were a treasure chest. And guys, it really was. And, it was several days BEFORE Christmas. 

"Here it is," my parents said. "Once you learn to play it, it will be with you for life!" Thank God, it is. Believe it - up to now. Here in my house in Davao City. My very first instrument... .

Anyway, back to the past: if my thin smile didn't match my parents' full-fledged grin, it was because I prayed for a piano! It was at the end of the 1950s, and I was glued to my AM- and ShortWave Radio Stations, playing classical music 24/7. Accordions were nowhere in my hit parade - even later during the 1960s and 1970s... .

Sometime on a Sunday, one of my favourite days till now, I started taping radio shows with classical music. It seemed that I was hanging on every note. I joined the college band. But I admired classical composers such as Beethoven and Mozart, just to mention two. I never became perfect in my piano play to coax sweet sounds. I also admire people who can do so. But I developed a passion for music.

Music, God - and, yes: Merry Christmas to all of you - also from this corner, even there are still some more days.... .

Blessing of the Special Music Collection witnessed by Liceo University Chairperson Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez

Thanks to a father’s love for music, his lifetime legacy of music books, CDs and DVDs will undoubtedly benefit untold generations of musicians at the Liceo de Cagayan University Conservatory of Music, Theatre and Dance.

Liceo University Librarian Linda Mondoñedo receives the official documents for the transfer of ownership of Johann Baecker's Special Music Collection from his son, Prof. Horst Hans Baecker.

Last August 7, 2019 Horst-Hans Bäcker, Associate Dean of the Conservatory, and Professor for Composition, Conducting and Historical Informed Performance, donated some 2,000 books, music sheets, and about 1,000 and DVDs for the reference and research of students at the Conservatory Office.

The collection was the lifetime legacy of his late father,  Johann Bäcker, and was officially turned over to the Conservatory by his wife Regina and son Horst-Hans and received by University Librarian Linda Mondoñedo in behalf of the University in a blessing and turnover of what shall henceforth be known as the "Special Music Collection" as a tribute to the late musician.

The event was also witnessed by University Chairperson Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez and President Dr. Mariano M. Lerin, the immediate family of the benefactor and faculty and students of the Conservatory.

When his father passed on nine months ago, Prof. Bäcker, shipped the music collection to his second home, Cagayan de Oro, Philippines.

Johann Bäcker was born on November 25, 1932, in Deutsch-Stamora, one of two German regions in Romania. He was a third generation of musicians in his village, but when he was younger, his father didn't want him to  follow in his footsteps and  be a professional musician.

His parents sent him to the provincial capital Temeschburg to get a 'real' profession. There, he learned to play the clarinet in secret. Right after his graduation, he became a member of the Romanian State Orchestra in Ploesti and the State Film Orchestra. Finally, he mustered the courage to confess to his father that he had become a professional musician just like his forebears.

Later that year, Johann became the clarinetist for the Dance Hall Orchestra in Bucharest where he met his future wife Regina while out dancing with friends.

Two years after getting married, the couple bore their only child, Horst-Hans. In 1973, the family moved to Germany and Johann became a professor for Clarinet, Flute, and Saxophone at the Music school in the City of Datteln, near Dortmund. During this same year, he also became the conductor of the City Wind Orchestra.

Unlike his father, Johann shared his passion for music with his son Horst. He would bring the youngster to orchestra rehearsals, and he had him learn piano at the age of 5. Horst grew up with a heart for music and pursued the same path as his father, and grandfather, and his forebears before him.

Now valued at close to a million pesos, Johann accumulated his vast collection of music books and score sheets  for his son and students over his lifetime, not stopping even when he had already retired. 

He envisioned that it would benefit young people studying music and indeed, his “Special Collection” had finally found a home with the Liceo de Cagayan University Conservatory of Music, Theatre and Dance where it would serve generations of musicians to come. (with Ena Marie E. Tiro)

The Abel Family - Die Abel Familie

The German Abel family belongs to one of the first classical music forerunners and paved the way for innumerable and - let me subscribe it - as "indirect foundations laying".

CLAMOR HEINRICH ABEL, was born in the German county Westphalia (which is, by the way, also this writer's home!) around 1640.

Clamor Heinrich Abel became a chamber musician in 1665 and published his edition of sonatas during the period 1674-1677. Notes estates are available until nowadays.

CHRISTIAN FERDINAND ABEL, his son, became a cellist under Johann Sebastian Bach during the years 1715-1737. From him Bach composed i.e. the popular "Viola da Gamba". Bach was also the NINONG (godfather) of his third child. Christian Ferdinand Abel's two sons entered his foot-steps.

LEOPOLD AUGUST ABEL (born March 24, 1718, passed away August 25, 1794), scholar of Francois Benda (1709-17860 became Royal Conductor at the Ludwigslust Castle.

CARL FRIEDRICH ABEL (born December 22, 1723 and passed away June 20, 1787 in London), also student of Bach, remained as "last gambist" (Viola da gamba, a 'on the knees put and played violin). Since 1765 Carl Friedrich Abel arranged and organized concert performances with Johann Christian Bach. Unfortunately happened this without success and Carl-Friedrich Abel became a saucy drinker. One of his symphonies has been ascribed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "KV 18" in e-flat major, but i wasn't Mozart's "18th" composition.

Side by Side - A Piano Duet Concert in Davao City

It was (again!) an enchanting evening. Hundreds of classical music lovers (including me!) experienced a wonderful concert with the two concert pianist ladies Daphne C. Jocson (member of the quintet "The Five Davao Lady Pianists and very good friend of mine!) and Mary Anne Espina.

Daphne Cabaguio Jocson is a dynamic collaborating artist in local and foreign classical music circles. She performs with professional artists in Manila, Davao City and the United States. She is indeed an advocate of honing promising young artists in the country thus, takes precedence in collaborating with young and upcoming musicians.

Daphne was a featured soloist of the Manila Symphony Orchestra then known as the Manila Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Professor Basilio Manalo and Professor Arturo Molina where she performed the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor - both my favourite piano concertos as well.

Recently Daphne was engaged as pianist/repititeur for several productions, among others, Dulaang U.P.'s "Noli Me Tangere" and Ryan Cayabyab's musical "Ageless Passion". 

A 2007 Aliw Awardee for the Best Instrumentalist category, Mary Anne Espina has been featured in the Filipino Artists Series at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In 2010, she was presented by the GSIS Museo ng Sining in cooperation woth the embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany  in a solo concert in celebration of Robert Schumann's 200th birthyear. In 2011, Mary Anne collaborated with pianist Jonathan Coo in an all Liszt repertoire , as a tribute to Franz Liszt's 200th birthyear. 

Known for her excellence in chamber music, Mary Anne is one of the most sought after collaborating artists in the Philippines today.

The classical music evening in the Apo View Hotel brought us compositions from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gabriel Faure (one of the greatest french composers of the 19th century), Johannes Brahms (with one of my favourite Hungarian Dances, the No. 5), Johann Sebastian Bach, Fritz Kreisler  (an Austrian born violinist and composer), and Agot Espino (born 1957), Philippine pianist, pedagogue and christian songwriter.

Thank you so very much Daphne and Mary Anne for a wonderful evening with classical music.

DOST brought STARBOOKS to Davao City

A humble contribution of the Department of Science and Technology to the world of education was introduced by its Davao Regional Office on November 17, 2011 at NCCC Mall, Davao City called STARBOOKS.

STARBOOKS or the S&T Academic and Research=Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Station is a new academic resource for students and researchers. STARBOOKS contains thousands of digitized science and technology resources in various formats (text and video/audio). STARBOOKS aims to create interest of students to enroll in the field of Science and Technology; encourage great and curious minds to develop new ideas, such as inventions and innovations; and inspire one's capacity for entrepreneurship and research.

DOST XI Regional Director, Dr. Anthony Sales, said that the STARBOOKS will support the students and teachers alike while undertaking research. Dr. Sales added that STARBOOKS complements the scholarship program of the DOST as it enhances the science capabilities of students from all levels in the region.

Likewise, STARBOOKS is helpful to our entrepreneuring kababayans in the countryside as it provides technology videos ranging from food processing to laundry soap making and other livlehood materials.

DOST is looking forward to the availment of the STARBOOKS by Local Government Units (LGUs), Non-Government Organizations, Educational Institutions and Private Institutions to make Science and Technology Information accessible to every Filipino. In fact, Councilor Jose Louie Villafuerte representing Mayor Sara Duterte during the RICE 2011, is optimistic of getting one for the City of Davao.

DOST XI welcomes stakeholders who are interesting in putting up a STARBOOKS in their area. All that is required are computer, pod, space measuring 3m x 4m (with specifications for physical set up of the kiosk), mandatory training, and a focal person.
