Catindig offers Alas’ historic bronze to past national team players

MANILA, Philippines — Dawn Macandili-Catindig offered Alas Pilipinas’ historic bronze medal in the AVC Challenge Cup to the past Philippine women’s volleyball team players, who have been part of the program’s ups and downs.

The veteran national team libero was one of the two remaining members of the 2018 Asian Games team with captain and setter Jia De Guzman ushering in the Alas era of the national team.

Catindig and De Guzman provided great leadership to the young Nationals and made history by winning bronze in the country’s successful Challenge Cup hosting — the program’s first AVC medal since 1961.

Although only two of them were the holdovers of the past national squads, Catindig still credited the current team’s success to the former players since she started representing the country in 2017.

I love working with people who are as passionate and hardworking,” she added.

Catindig protected the country’s floor with Jen Nierva as Alas swept Pool A for a breakthrough semifinal appearance in the AVC but got swept by finalist Kazakhstan. On Wednesday, the Nationals completed their historic run with a bronze-clinching win over Australia.

Despite going through a lot of heartbreaks as a national team player with three straight fourth-place endings in the past Southeast Asian Games, the Cignal HD Spiker was fulfilled after a great run with her younger teammates like Angel Canino, Thea Gagate, Fifi Sharma, Eya Laure, and Sisi Rondina.

“Thank You [Lord] for giving me the strength to continue despite the heartbreaks. Every year, You give me renewed hope that it’s gonna be different. That I might make a difference,” said Catindig, who thanked all her teammates, coaches, their fans, the Philippine National Volleyball Federation, and her mother team, Cignal.

“Thank you cap, (Jia) for steering the ship. You keep us grounded! I got yo.

Catindig is part of the PNVF’s long-term plan as president Tats Suzara expressed his intention to keep this bronze medal team and pool members Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, and Casiey Dongallo.

The national team mainstay believes the best is yet to come after showing a lot of promises despite the limited time to prepare.

“We started with no expectations, less than a week to train together, and a challenge in front of us. I’m so proud of all these people who embraced their roles and did it with all their heart FOR THE TEAM. That is why it was easy to play with a light heart because everyone was working hard and at the same time respecting each other’s space,” Catindig said.

The younger Filipinas side remained in the second spot of Group A, only this time with a -1 goal difference (GD) and three points off its dominant 6-1 win against tournament host Indonesia earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the top seed North Koreans surged to a +13 GD following back-to-back clean sheets in their group fixtures for six points.

With one game apiece, Indonesia and South Korea settled for the third and fourth spots as they tackle each other later in the same day at 7 p.m.

Jon Il-chong not only opened the scoring for North Korea in the 17th minute but also delivered a brace 10 minutes later to seize control early into the game. By halftime, the Philippines was not only scoreless but trailing big by four.

Still, the Filipinas couldn’t find their breakthrough in the last half, with North Korea’s Son Jo-ye closing the onslaught with a final goal in extra time to give their side complete control of the group table.

In their dominant opening win, captain Alexa Pino and forward Nat Collins posted braces each, which are now coming in handy to keep the Philippines’ chances of advancing to the second round alive.

Should the Philippines endure the tough climb, a spot to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup berth awaits them as the ultimate reward.

Creamline overpowers Choco Mucho, inches closer to PVL AFC title

Playing in their 11th finals appearance, the Cool Smashers displayed their composure despite trailing for a number of times in the two-hour contest to move one win away from retaining the title.

Jema Galanza torched the net by unleashing powerful spikes on all angles to finish with 20 points including 18 kills while Tots Carlos was equally unstoppable at the attack line and erupted for 17 points.

Galanza attributed to their never-say-die attitude in this game, which also served as a rematch of last conference’s finals where Creamline needed a deciding Game 3 to snare the crown.

“Ayoko lang na matapos yung game na to na hindi kami nananalo,” said Galanza, who also contributed two blocks.

“Nakikita ko kasi sa teammates ko na lumalaban sila. Sino pa ba ako para sumuko? Kaya nilaban talaga namin to,” she added.

Choco Mucho came through with strong starts in all sets but Creamline, somehow, found ways to shackle the Flying Titans resolve particularly in the pivotal fourth frame where the Cool Smashers rallied from a 12-9 deficit to 14-all. From there, Galanza and company sizzled with powerful smashes that rattled Choco Mucho’s defense as Creamline went on to unleash a 7-0 run that set the tone for the remainder of the match.

The Cool Smashers also banked on their formidable lineup with Bea De Leon coming off the bench in the second set and finishing with 11 points, and Michele Gumabao and Bernadeth Pons conspiring for 17 points.

Skipper Alyssa Valdez  only played in the first three sets, but contributed with nine points.

Creamline’s all-around effort overshadowed the impressive performance of Sisi Rondina, who exploded anew with 27 points, as well as Royse Tubino, who pumped in 15 points for Choco Mucho.

The Cool Smashers, who were seeded fourth in the semifinals before earning a finals berth, try to close out the series in Game 2 on Sunday, May 12, at the same venue.

PH team finishes ninth in Asian Women's U18 Volleyball Championship

by Kristel Satumbaga-Villar, Manila Bulletin

Team Philippines dominated India, 25-21, 25-19, 25-12, to finish ninth place in the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sports Centre Gymnasium in Thailand Monday.

Katherine Shaine Cortez, a standout from Bacolod Tay Tung High School, distributed the ball well with 26 excellent sets to be hailed as Player of the Game.

Rhose Viane Almendralejo bannered the PH team’s attacks with 16 points, while Dona Mae De Leon and Ana Francesa Hermosura chipped in 12 and nine points, respectively.

It was a revenge of sorts for the Jerry Ye-mentored squad after losing to India in the group stage, 25-14, 21-25, 23-25, 19-25, last week.

After escaping a tight opening set, the Filipina spikers dictated the tempo in the next two sets with a 20-16 advantage in the second frame and a 19-9 lead in the third.

The team is the youngest in the tournament and is composed of players from Western Visayas.

Final date and venue have yet to be announced but the Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion will perform first while the University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe will showcase their routine last for UAAP Season 84. (MB File Photo)

Final date and further details have yet to be announced but respective head coaches of different squads took the development to social media.

Defending champions National University Pep Squad will showcase their routine at second, followed by the University of the Philippines Pep Squad, and last season’s first-runner up Far Eastern University Cheering Squad.

Adamson University Pep, Season 82’s second-runner up, will perform fifth, De La Salle Animo Squad will execute at sixth, and University of the East Pep Squad will carry out at seventh.

NU, FEU, and Adamson maintained their spot at the podium for the past two seasons, particularly in the 81st and 82nd.

From 2013 to 2019, the NU Pep Squad have won six of their seven cheerdance campaigns.

Adamson halted NU’s reign in 2017 as UST and UE placed second and third, respectively.

While the venue has yet to be disclosed, the cheerdance competition was held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City for the past three seasons.

Cheerdance was among Season 84’s nine events along with men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball, men’s beach volleyball, poomsae, and men’s and women’s chess.

The UAAP is set to kick off on March 26 after almost two years since sporting events were put on a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Davao City as sports tourism hub

MEDIA RELEASE
27 March 2018

DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES –The Philippines scored yet another tourism marketing coup with its successful hosting of the Alveo IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon last Sunday in this premier Mindanao city, the hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Thousands of people welcomed and cheered over 2,000 competitors in the different categories of this prestigious international sporting event that featured 21 world champions, including men’s professional big winner Mauricio Mendez of Mexico.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Tulfo Teo said tens of thousands foreign and domestic visitors descended in Davao City for the spectacle race, rendering hotel resorts in the area fully-booked days before the three-day event began.

“Once more, we have showcased Davao City as an outstanding venue for major international events and as a safe haven for truly great fun experience,” said Teo, a self-made Davao travel entrepreneur before her ascent to the DOT top post.

Both Teo and Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio vowed to facilitate and host other popular sports events this year, including a segment of the World’s Strongest Man competition next month in the backdrop of immense Mt. Apo.

“I’ve been wanting to do the Ironman here. I am very happy that it’s here now and we welcome you all wholeheartedly,” Mayor Duterte-Carpio said during the media day at the Ayala Land’s Azuela Cove in Davao City’s Lanang district.

The triumphant 22-year old Mendez, a heartthrob among women enthusiasts, said he has fallen for Davao City’s pristine scenery, luscious greenery, the exotic local cuisine and the Filipino hospitality.

Mauricio finished second in last year’s IRONMAN in Cebu City and a seven-time first-placer in previous IRONMAN and XTERRA professional triathlon competitions.

Women's pro-winner Radka Kahlefeldt of Czech Republic has competed several times in the Philippines while Cebu native Jorry Ycong topped the Asian Elite category.

The triathlon included a 1.9-kilometer swim, followed by a 90-kilometer bike, and ended with a 21.1-kilometer run.

A record-high 1,800 professional triathletes from 39 countries like Australia, Japan, Hungary, Mexico, United States, South Africa and the Czech Republic competed the 9-hour event that also featured Filipino celebrities Matteo Guidicelli, Wilfred Uytengsu, Kim Atienza, and Bubbles Paraiso.

The organizers prepared special medals for the finishers, crafted by a prominent Mindanaoan artist named Kublai Millan.

Teo also lauded the local Philippine National Police (PNP) region 11 police office and hundreds of community volunteers for ensuring security and traffic safety throughout Sunday’s race.

“Tourism does not only seek to promote destinations but also wellness for local and international visitors to pamper themselves, and Mindanao offers a complete package for holistic health and fitness, and nature adventure,” said Teo.

“Marami pang darating na events, not only in Davao but in other places din para ma-promote ang iba pang destinations (There will be more events not only in Davao but also in other emerging tourist destinations),” Teo added.

Teo said the event is aligned with the DOT’s “Go South” program to promote world-class destinations like Siargao, Samal Island, Camiguin, Zamboanga and Tawi-Tawi, and Mindanao’s products, food, culture and tradition.

Goodbye Malaysia - Hello Philippines

Goodbye Malaysia; Hello, Philippines

In Photo: Foreign Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano waves the Southeast Asian Games Federation flag after receiving it from Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose Cojuangco Jr. and outgoing SEA Games Federation President Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar of Malaysia during the closing ceremony on Wednesday night at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur
THE 29th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games Kuala Lumpur has officially concluded in a colorful and vibrant ceremony as hosts Malaysia celebrate in style the 145-gold medal feat in the region’s biggest sporting extravaganza at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Games cauldron, which was lit by Malaysian diving sensation Nur Dhabitah Sabri on August 19, was completely extinguished at exactly 10.17 p.m. (Malaysian time), marking the end of an exciting 12 days of action which saw Malaysia achieving its target of becoming the overall champion.
Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak earlier declared the Games closed at precisely 10.13 p.m.
Over the last two weeks, 4,709 athletes and 2,381 officials gathered in Kuala Lumpur and competed in 404 events over 38 sports. Host Malaysia formed the biggest contingent of 844 athletes and 390 officials.
Earlier on Wednesday, Malaysia raked in another six out of the seven gold medals contested in diving (2), ice skating (3) and weightlifting (1) to complete its gold medal haul to 145.
Thailand took home 72 gold medals for second spot, followed by Vietnam with 58, Singapore 57, Indonesia 38, Philippines 24, Myanmar seven, Cambodia three and Laos two.
Brunei ended its campaign with five silver and eight bronze medals and Timor Leste managed three bronze medals.
The 30th edition of the Games will be hosted by the Philippines in 2019.
It was a a proud moment for Malaysia and Games organizers, Malaysia Organising Committee (MASOC), which, besides its massive achievement on the field amassing 323 medals, also earned recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its great efforts in organizing the Games.
IOC Executive Board member Ng Ser Miang of Singapore presented MASOC Chairman YB Brig Gen Khairy Jamaluddin, also the Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister, with a special trophy.
The traditional hand over of the SEA Games Federation flag to 2019 Games host Philippines was simple but meaningful with outgoing SEA Games Federation president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar of Malaysia presenting the flag to Philippines Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco who then handed it to the Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who will the lead in organizing the country’s first hosting of the Games since 2005.

Arellano looks to forge title showdown against San Sebastian

ABS-CBN News

Arellano University needs just one victory against De La Salle-College of St. Benilde to advance to the Finals. Josh Albelda, ABS-CBN Sports
MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University will try to book its Finals ticket as it clashes with defending champion De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) in the stepladder semifinals of the NCAA Season 92 women's volleyball tournament Friday at the Arena in San Juan.
Ensured of a twice-to-beat edge after finishing the eliminations as the second seed, Arellano needs just one victory against the Lady Blazers in their 3:30 p.m. match to advance to the Finals.
A victory for Arellano will put it in a championship showdown against unbeaten San Sebastian College. The Lady Stags clinched an outright Finals berth after sweeping the eliminations, and they also have a thrice-to-beat edge.
Arellano already holds one victory over CSB, having beaten the Lady Blazers 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 when they met in the elimination round last January 11.
Coach Obet Javier said the Lady Chiefs need to play better in order to pull off another win over the defending champions, however.
"We all know they beat us in the stepladder semifinals last year," Javier pointed out. "We need to really play harder to prevent it from happening again this year."
The Lady Blazers kept their title defense alive with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 over San Beda in the first phase of the stepladder semifinals.
Although it is facing a twice-to-beat disadvantage, CSB remains confident.
"We're in a familiar place," said CSB coach Macky Cariño, whose players came all the way back from the fourth seed to win their first ever title last season. "I'm optimistic we can come through."
In men's play, defending champion University of Perpetual Help and CSB start their best-of-three title duel as the two face off at 1:30 p.m.
Both games will be telecast live on ABS CBN's Sports and Action Channel 23.
In juniors action, reigning titlist Perpetual Help and Emilio Aguinaldo College collide one final time at 10 a.m. with the winner arranging a finals match with Lyceum of the Philippines University, which swept the eliminations to barge into the finals.

SINGAPORE – Perlas Pilipinas remained in strong medal contention as it rebounded from a five-point loss to Thailand Tuesday, clobbering Vietnam, 100-55, in the 28th SEA Games women’s basketball at the OCBC Arena Hall 1 here on Wednesday.
Malaysia kept the fight for the gold wide open in stopping Thailand, 65-56, later in the day.
The Philippines and Malaysia play at 9 a.m. today with the Filipinas needing to win by at least nine points to stay in the hunt for the gold.
Through the second day of women’s basketball, the Malaysians were in the lead in the one-round-robin play with a clean 2-0 win-loss mark.
Allana Lim sparkled with 17 points, Clare Castro towered with 13 markers and seven rebounds and Afril Bernardino struck with 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals as the Filipinas virtually ran a clinic on the Vietnamese side.
Sofia Roman and Analyn Almazan played limited minutes due to injuries but there’s no stopping the Filipinas from running a show on the way to the win-column.
Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1
Unlike against the Thais, the Filipinas found their shooting touch, connecting on a 53-percent clip including three three-point conversions by Cindy Resultay, Danica Jose and Camille Sambille.
The Filipinas waxed hot in the final half, pounding the Vietnamese, 32-11, in the third quarter and, 32-15, in the final canto.

Again On The Top?

Mindanao Daily Mirror fellow columnist Bert Tesorero commented it very well:

"There are varied reactions among the local residents on the victory of the Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacguiao against his Mexican challenger Juan Marguez in a grudge fight in Las Vegas, Nevada, last Sunday. They feel dismayed or even frustrated that thePacman failed to topple the Mexican pug. Others even think Marguez won the fight just because he stunned the Filipino boxer idol with a couple of staggering power punches during the bout. But the ring judges gave the cards to Pacman and that's it."
Government driver Dodong Salvador of Sandawa Homes in Kidapawan City stated:
"Manny is old. His fist doesn't have strength anymore.  He is no longer the Manny of yesteryears!"
Kidapawan Bishop Romulo dela Cruz said Marguez could have gotten the nod of the judges if he had been more on the offensive. Manny was more like the challenger. We have to admire Marguez for the improvement he has shown. But I like the decision!"

Manny Pacquiao - The Spirit of Filipino Unity

I must confess, I have never been a boxing fan, and I am pretty sure, I'll never become one. But meanwhile I became a fan of Manny Pacquiao. If I read all published articles and columns about him, I can't help myself, agreeing with them all. Even as an expat, who really doesn't like boxing.

Manny is Maximus. And as a Manila Bulletin writer voiced out: "He is pound-for-pound the best boxer in the world, the Fighter of the Decade, the People's champion, the fighting pride of Sarangani, a testament to the Filipinio spirit, a symbol of national unity, an inspiration.

Yes, I don't enjoy watching this bloody sport too as it pits one with killer instinct over another, as Philippine Star columnist Domini M. Torrevillas, wrote a couple of days ago.  But, of course, it feels good that there is someone with brave and simple "probinsyano" (provincial) charm giving the Philippines a good image.

Boxing is a job, but as he said, he'll not do it forever. Filipino people love him, people in general, people everywhere... .

For living up to his "lofty billing as the mythical pound-for-bound best boxer in the world  when he dominated and outclassed his American opponent Sugar Shane Mosly", ComVal Rep. Zamora-Apsay commended Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao in House Resolution No. 1207, which she filed on May 9, 2011.

"We have so gotten used to his victories that there is no doubt he will win every time he steps on the ring, But his latest triumph cemented the recognition that he is one of the history's best if not the best prizefight ever", she said.

HR No. 1207 also recognizes the fact that rep. Pacquiao continues to make the country proud and the House of Representatives in particular being the only elected official in the Philippines to have won a world title in the sport of boxing.

"What makes Congressman Manny's accomplishment extra special and meaningful is the fact that he dedicates every fight and victory to the Filipino people. He even symbolically wore yellow gloves to call for unity among Filipino", the lady solon added.

Manny Pacquiao - not such a successful boxer here in the Philippines. For some readers  surely not easy to understand and believe... .

The Philippine Box Icon: Manny Pacquiao

I must confess: I have never been a friend of boxing sport. I changed my mind since last year or so (I don't remember the exact date or incident!). I met Manny Pacquiao's mother during a Rotary convention in General Santos City. I didn't understand, why so many Filipinos admired (and are still admiring!) Manny even as a National hero. Maybe I go the point now... .

Let's face it: when it comes to international sport events: where are the Philippines? When it comes to international sport events, Manny appears more and more in media's headlines.

Looking forward to his next match: it should be the last time Manny will fight at a catch weight. It will be as a welter weight at 147 lb, where he is reigning WBO champaign. No more, no less.

When I browsed www.maxboxing.com I got surprised, learning about trainer Freddie Roach, telling the world, "that he hates catch weight fights"!

Manny Pacquiao is the only fighter in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight classes and will face Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC super-welter weight  title on November 14, 2010 in Arlington/Texas.

If I ask my fellow Filipino friends and neighbors, if they are confident of a win by the Philippine's champ Manny over Antonio, one might not surprised to learn:

- I am always confident that he will win, and we all should be!
- I am confident with his God-given talent, because he is a world-class boxer.
- I am NOT confident, because Antonio is too tall, heavier and used to the welter weight division and had defeated top-ranking welter weights with flourish!

Mmmh - anyway, good luck Manny!
