This program helps preserve marine environment in Tiwi, Albay

Biodiversity blooms in barangays


In a small town in Albay, the marine environment houses diverse aquatic species crucial for biodiversity. Unfortunately, the climate crisis is set to worsen the reduction of diversity in marine ecosystems, which prompts the need to adopt sustainable practices and preserve with urgency the resources in coastal regions. 

The Environmental Conservation for Sustaining Tiwi’s Aquatic Resources (ECO-STAR), a program by the Philippine Geothermal Production Company (PGPC) which is a unit of SM Investments Corporation, helps rehabilitate the beach and mangrove areas across 14 coastal barangays in the town. This effort contributes to the fight against declining biodiversity protection and, ultimately, climate warming.

To better serve local communities, the program has developed a watch station area that would serve as the town's information center for coastal and fishery education, which includes addressing the harmful effects of illegal fishing. 

"Our holistic approach to coastal conservation not only focuses on environmental protection but also on improving the livelihoods of local families. By integrating education, community engagement, and sustainable practices, we aim to create lasting benefits for both the environment and the people,” said Napoleon Saporsantos Jr., president at PGPC. 

The company said since the program’s inception, it has overseen the planting and nurturing of over 300,000 mangrove and beach tree species and facilitated the rescue and release of 327 sea turtles, which received financial support through its fundraising events. 

Meanwhile, since 2017, PGCP said it has contributed to restoring the Bariis River in the town through coastal clean-up activities, solid waste management, tree planting, and awareness campaigns. This river, formerly polluted, now has one of the most acceptable qualities recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau.

“While the Bariis River is crucial to our renewable energy operations, our primary goal is to ensure the health of our ecosystems. Clean rivers contribute to a healthy environment overall, and that’s why we are dedicated to their preservation,” he added.  

Moving forward, the program seeks to continue working toward transforming Tiwi into an Eco-Adventure Marine Park, with plans underway for team-building activities, wildlife conservation, and livelihood improvements.

Collective action is key to protecting our natural resources, which starts by building on awareness about their decline and later joining eco-initiatives that champion their conservation. ECO-STAR shows it takes a village to help restore our finite resources, urging each of us to act now and preserve the biodiversity that thrived long before us.

The new song, which is set to become another trending hit from the group. is the new anthem of Penshoppe which encapsulates and reflects what the brand stands for.

Loyal and new customers, as well as fans of BINI, can now share in the experience as the new collections and photos of BINI will be featured in Penshoppe stores nationwide. A music video showcasing the collaboration will also be released on Oct. 20.

BINI fashion: Fun, sustainable, evolving

Dressed in an assortment of cropped tops, shrunken cardis, asymmetrical pleated skirts, and patchwork trousers, the P-pop group Bini look like young girls playing dress-up with whatever they can get their hands on. That DIY vibe when it comes to their looks has persisted since their launch as teens back in 2021.

Now in their early 20s, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena have a string of catchy songs under their belt including “Salamin, Salamin,” “Pantropiko” and “Karera,” with the accompanying music videos that have been listened and danced to countless times.

Stylist Ica Villanueva, the group’s visual director, is responsible for whatever the girls wear in public, whether the event is big or small. In an interview with Lifestyle, she talked about how she landed the styling gig, her bid for sustainability, and what she has planned for Bini as the girls grow up and mature.


Starting the conversation on women empowerment

When AS Watson became a signatory early this year of the Women’s Empowerment Principles, a global movement under the United Nations Women Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, the global health and beauty retailer strengthened its commitment to promoting inclusivity and opportunities for women.

Watsons Philippines, in particular, has 80 percent of its workforce made up of women, according to its senior assistant vice president for marketing, public relations, and sustainability, Sharon Decapia. This is 10 percent higher than the global level, she pointed out during the “Move with PowHer” forum held last Monday at KMC One Ayala in Makati City.

“Majority of our customers are also female,” Decapia told Lifestyle at the event. “At least 60 percent, based on our club membership.” Thus, the mounting of “Move with PowHer” for the first time, she pointed out.

My German teacher told me they no longer use it, and have 'ss' instead, so I wanted to confirm the validity of that statement.

You’ve already received lots of correct and good explanatory answers, so I just want to vent my anger. Not at you but your teacher!

I cannot believe that after over 20 years some non native German teachers still think that the ß has disappeared. Where have they been all this time?
I have lost count about the amount of times I had to explain it to people that the rules have changed but the letter is still there. I can understand the confusion in 1995 when it might not have been too clear what exactly changed. But not 23 years later.

Any German teacher who still says that the ß has gone clearly has not had a proper look inside a textbook lately or any German books, magazines, newspapers or websites. Shame on them!
