Gen Z speak: What is 'holding space' and how to practice it

Janine Young - Philstar.com

To hold space is to create a safe, accepting environment in which one can sit with an idea without judging it.

Janine Young

UNITED STATES — The term “holding space” has taken Gen Z by storm and has become a new term used in everyday vocabulary.

It first went viral from an interview clip of "Wicked" stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The interviewer mentioned the musical’s iconic song "Defying Gravity" and that people are really “holding space” with its lyrics, but what does that really mean?

The virality of the clip led to the newfound discovery of the term “holding space,” but this was not the term’s debut.

“Holding space” is actually not a new concept, and anyone who works in the mental health field will be able to attest to that.

According to a Psychology Today article, to hold space is to create a safe, accepting environment in which one can sit with an idea without judging it. An example of this is to “hold space” for emotions, recognizing that it is ok to feel a certain way about something even though it is not the typical reaction, like feeling sad about moving. This is typically a cause for celebration, but at the same time, it is the closing of a chapter, a change in routine. The future is unknown, and that’s scary.

Canadian author Heather Plett has been discussing this concept over a decade before its viral moment. The origin of the term can be roughly traced back to the work of Donald Winnicott, who was a psychoanalyst. “Holding space” is a common tool that modern day mental health specialists tend to use in their work.

Some people have taken the concept of “holding space” and “defying gravity” to create videos on TikTok. The idea is shown in a little more of a literal sense — jumping off a springboard and being launched in the air is literally defying gravity.

But one can also interpret this in a more abstract way. To “hold space” with these diving fails and accept them as part of the journey.

How does one practice or observe "holding space"? There are three different ways.

1. Be present

In some definitions of “holding space,” this plays an integral role. Essentially, being present would require actually listening and being in the moment and processing everything in real-time.

This would be the first step to not judging something. When someone is wholly present, they do not have time to analyze situations or people; they give their most authentic reaction.

2. Be open

Holding space means no judgement. Not being judgmental includes being open, whether that is to new ideas or a different perspective.

3. Listen

The most important aspect of holding space is to listen. It is easy to make quick dismissals and tune out but to really listen? Not so much. Digest every single word and really understand what they mean.

The rising popularity of the term brings with it the rising awareness of mental health resources. In this instance, it is the idea and importance of holding space, which people can come to learn and use in their everyday lives.

Why this interview clip ever became as viral as it did may be a mystery to many, Ariana and Cynthia included, but the expansion in Gen Z vocabulary never ceases to amaze.

Save this term for future use!

Feng shui master Patrick Fernandez on how to ‘seize the year’ 2025

RAZZLE-DAZA - Pat-P Daza - The Philippine Star

January 27, 2025 | 12:00am

Patrick Lim Fernandez of Yin & Yang Shop of Harmony combines classical feng shui concepts with a background in finance and real estate to produce fundamentally sound feng shui recommendations.

Kung Hei Fat Choi, or Gong Xi Fa Cai, dear readers! The Lunar New Year falls on Wednesday, Jan. 29, marking the start of the Year of the Wood Snake. As I’ve done in previous years, I’ve asked Patrick Fernandez of Yin & Yang Shop of Harmony to share his knowledge and guide us on how we can “seize the year” and be more prosperous according to our Chinese zodiac signs. The floor is yours, my friend.

2025 marks the beginning of the summer period of the Chinese Zodiac. The Snake is the first of the summer triumvirate, followed by the Horse and the Goat. As such, there is a strong Fire energy brought about by the Snake, which is fanned even more by the Yin Wood influence of the year.

So, what are the prevalent energies that are present this year that we should maximize? One is to work through others to meet your objectives. The Yin Wood influence of the year emanates a strong collaborative spirit that brings people together. So focus on building genuine connections and fostering meaningful relationships within your professional and personal circles. Also actively seek ways to connect others who might benefit from knowing each other.

Another is to practice long-term thinking and patience. Consider the broader implications and potential long-term impacts of your decisions. Develop strategies that account for various future scenarios and possibilities. Invest time in learning principles that will remain relevant over time.

Industries that look to do well this year are the Water element industries such as hospitality, supermarkets, trading, sales, hygiene and analytics.

Other industries that also look to do well are the Metal industries: Banking/finance, automobile, mining/machinery, jewelry, armed forces, skin care/beauty products, and medical/dental industry.

As we had mentioned last year, through the year 2044, these are some major trends that are present for Trend 9. One is that there are certain industries tied to Fire that will be more prominent than others. These include enterprises that specialize in, or can smartly leverage Technology, including AI and virtual commerce. Others are communication, energy, entertainment, events, the food industry, politics and aviation, even things related to space.

Aligning with these business and industry trends will be beneficial for you and for your business or career. There is also a strong Yin energy tied to this period, which is tied to the Female energy. So we will see the continued rise and prominence of female energy in different areas.

Lastly, there will be an evolving Sense of Self this period. For one, people will become more independent and would want to do things on their own. Additionally, one’s reputation or influence will become a more valuable asset, so cultivating and preserving this will take more importance. There looks to be a rise in spirituality or looking inward and seeking answers for purpose and meaning. Overall, there are quite a number of exciting energies for everyone to look forward to.

Below is a summary of the main energies present for each Zodiac Animal sign.

RAT: The Jade Hall Aspiring Star brings forth a year ripe for wealth building and asset growth. This optimal period encourages bold investment ventures while emphasizing the importance of personal development and learning. Adding a “FAT FAT” Wealth Enhancer can amplify financial opportunities, though careful planning remains essential.

OX: The Canopy Top Star radiates creative vitality, empowering artistic expression and innovation. Often called the Artist Star, it energizes those in entertainment, music, visual arts, film, writing, advertising, and design. Even for those outside creative fields, this astral force opens pathways for personal growth through education and skill development. While this artistic energy may lead to solitude, maintaining social connections and spiritual exploration remains essential.

TIGER: The Heavenly Benevolent Star brings supportive energy, dissolving troubles and serving as a protective shield. Its power helps transform adversity into opportunities while enhancing problem-solving abilities. A Wood Benefactor Dragon can attract positive influences and like-minded individuals. Clear communication of needs and aspirations remains vital for harnessing support and achieving success through collaboration.

RABBIT: The Fortune Virtue Star forecasts a favorable financial landscape, guiding the path to wealth building and future security. It unveils fresh income sources and investment opportunities. This astral energy also hints at career advancements through promotions or raises. Success stems from clear financial planning, budgeting, and strategic investment choices aligned with long-term objectives.

For singles, it promises potential romantic bonds through social activities and community involvement. Those in relationships may find opportunities to deepen their bond through marriage or family planning. This astral force enhances social connections, fostering new friendships and strengthening existing ones.

This timing creates heightened visibility while requiring adaptability and mindful decision-making. Though fluctuations in luck may occur, this phase offers opportunities for growth, self-discovery and showcasing talents, provided one navigates with grace and consultation from trusted advisors.

HORSE: The Great Sun Star heralds a year of promise, radiating positive energy and dispelling negativity. It suggests embracing morning sunlight for rejuvenation and nurturing male relationships for wisdom and camaraderie. Like the life-giving sun, this astral force illuminates opportunities and strengthens one’s spirit through natural and social connections.

GOAT: The Earth Anticipation Star signals challenges in social relationships and family dynamics, particularly regarding elderly relatives who may need increased care. This period calls for reassessing friendships while managing potential household disputes through patient communication. A walk in the park: The need for urban green spaces

BY MANILA BULLETIN

E CARTOON JAN 26, 2025 (2).jpg

Today, we pause to remind ourselves of the value of parks or green spaces in our communities, and the benefits of taking a walk.
In the rapidly urbanizing landscape of the Philippines, parks and green spaces are not mere luxuries but essential components of sustainable city living. They offer a multitude of benefits, from enhancing public health to mitigating environmental challenges. However, the availability and accessibility of these green areas in major Philippine cities remain a pressing concern.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum of nine square meters of green space per person within a 15-minute walking distance. Unfortunately, many urban areas in the Philippines fall short of this standard. For instance, Metro Manila has been reported to have only about five square meters of green space per person, which is below the WHO’s recommended minimum.

Quezon City, one of Metro Manila’s largest cities, has a total green space of 23 percent and a tree coverage of 20 percent.  While this is a positive indicator, it still underscores the need for more accessible green areas across the metropolis.

The health benefits that parks and green spaces provide are well known facts.  Activities like walking in parks or engaging in “forest bathing” (immersing oneself in a forest environment) have been shown to lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety, and boost immune function.

Walking, the most basic form of physical activity, is an often underestimated yet incredibly powerful way to improve overall well-being. It requires no fancy equipment, no gym memberships, and no specialized training—just a comfortable pair of shoes and the willingness to take that first step.

Walking outdoors amplifies these effects. Spending time in nature, whether in a park, along a tree-lined street, or on a beach, helps soothe the mind and provide a sense of calm.

If there are no green spaces nearby, perhaps it is time for you to suggest to your barangay or local government unit to dedicate space for that. Parks also serve as communal areas where people from diverse backgrounds can interact, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

It is also important to remind our community and city officials of the environmental benefits of more green spaces in our communities. Green spaces act as the lungs of a city, improving air quality by filtering pollutants and providing shade, which helps regulate urban temperatures.

Despite the recognized benefits, the distribution and availability of parks across the Philippines are uneven. Rapid urbanization has often prioritized commercial and residential developments over the preservation of green spaces. This imbalance not only deprives residents of the associated health and environmental benefits but also exacerbates urban problems like poor air quality.

Both government entities and the private sector have important roles in integrating green spaces into urban planning. For example, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity has set a target to increase green spaces in the five largest cities by five percent by 2028.

Parks and green spaces are indispensable assets in urban settings, offering extensive benefits that enhance the quality of life for residents. As the Philippines continues to urbanize, it is imperative for both government and private sectors to recognize the value of these green areas and ensure their integration into urban development plans. By doing so, we can create healthier, more sustainable cities that cater to the well-being of their inhabitants.
