True love goes all the way

By Fr. Roy Cimagala

INDEED, that is how true love is. It never says enough in itself-giving. If it would cost one’s life, so be it. It would always take the initiative, never waiting for some favorable conditions to start loving. It may involve some episodes of anger, but it would always end with mercy.

We can learn these qualities of true love from the first reading of the Mass of Tuesday after Epiphany Sunday. (cfr. 1 Jn 4,7-10) “Let us love one another, for charity is of God. And every one that loves, is born of God, and knows God,” it says.

And it describes the extent to which this love goes in this way: “In this is charity: not as though we had loved God, but because he has first loved us, and sent his Son to be a propitiation for our sins.”

It obviously would look impossible for us to have that kind of love which we are meant to have since we are supposed to be God's image and likeness, sharers of his life and nature. We should not waste time worrying about that apparent impossibility. We are told that as long as we do our part, imperfect as it is, it would be God himself who would do it for us and with us!

If we truly love God and everybody else, with a love that is nothing less than a participation of the love God has for us and as commanded by Christ to us, then we will never say enough in our self-giving.

Even if such an attitude would already seem to be going beyond common sense, our reason and other human and worldly standards that we usually use to measure our love, we would still go on giving ourselves, never saying enough. We would just give and give, even if we seem to consume ourselves in death.

This is, of course, an overwhelming prospect, but that is what true love is. It is some kind of madness that knows no limits. It is given without measure, without cost, without any calculation.

And even if such total self-giving is not reciprocated, it would still go on loving. It is purely gratuitous. Even more, even if it is not only unreciprocated but is also violently resisted and rejected, it would still go on loving.

Obviously, if we are to rely only on our own powers, there is no way we can have this kind of self-giving. This can only take place if we are truly identified with Christ, if we have his grace and are corresponding to it with all that we have got.

It’s only in this condition that we can go beyond the limits of our natural self and above the usual drama in life. We of course have our limitations, physical, mental, emotional, etc. And yet, as long as we are truly with Christ, we can still manage to give ourselves unstintingly. The spiritual and supernatural in us through Christ would enable us to give ourselves despite our natural limitations and worldly conditions.

It is God’s grace that does the trick. It’s when we correspond sincerely to God’s love for us that we get a self-perpetuating energy to do our best in any given moment. It’s when we can manage to do the impossible.

We need to help each other to do and give our best in whatever task we have out of sheer love for God and neighbor. The appropriate training should be established in homes, schools and everywhere. The proper climate and environment should be created for this purpose.

PhilHealth Konsulta: Unlocking healthcare for all

BY MANILA BULLETIN

E CARTOON JAN 3, 2025 (1).jpg

Healthcare remains a critical need for millions and the promise of accessible and affordable medical services under the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act seems to be a beacon of hope. Yet, for many Filipinos, this promise often seems out of reach — not because of lack of programs, but due to failure in awareness and accessibility.

One such program is the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation Konsultasyong Sulit Tama (PhilHealth Konsulta) — introduced as a key component of the UHC Act. It is a government initiative aimed at providing members with comprehensive primary healthcare services. These include regular check-ups, diagnostics, medical prescriptions, and specialist referrals — all for free or at a minimal cost. The program is meant to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, by offering everyone equal access to quality medical care. This program is a legal entitlement, a right granted to PhilHealth members and dependents, ensuring they receive essential healthcare services, irrespective of income or geographic location.

According to the PhilHealth website, it has on record 108,505,167 beneficiaries — 62,236,523 members and 46,268,644 dependents as of December 2023. However, only 20,744,674 are registered with PhilHealth Konsulta — 14,545,416 members and 6,199,258 dependents. This underscores how the program is underutilized. The number of people who actively engage with this service is far below what it should be.

A fundamental reason lies in awareness, or rather, the lack of it. Despite being a law-mandated benefit, many PhilHealth members remain oblivious to its existence, much less its eligibility requirements or the extent of its coverage. Whether due to ineffective communication strategies, limited outreach, or a general disconnect between government programs and the public, PhilHealth Konsulta has yet to reach its full potential.

The poor dissemination of information is not just a minor inconvenience — it is a failure in public service. Those who need the program the most, particularly in rural areas or among marginalized communities, remain unaware of their entitlements. This means that millions of pesos in health funds, intended for the well-being of Filipinos, sit idle in PhilHealth coffers each year. The financial resources allocated for primary care services that could help prevent more serious health conditions are not being used to their full capacity. In fact, PhilHealth was in the limelight recently after Congress decided not to grant it any subsidy under the 2025 national budget owing this to its ₱600-billion reserve funds lying idle. While the law mandates that PhilHealth needs to have a reserve fund, the amount reaching as high as ₱600 billion may be too much considering that millions need healthcare assistance. This idle fund represents untapped potential for the prevention and treatment of countless diseases that could burden the nation’s healthcare system in the long run. More importantly, it’s a glaring indicator of inefficiency in public service. Every unutilized benefit is a missed opportunity for improved public health and a wasted investment in a system designed to support the nation’s health needs.

PhilHealth cannot afford to let this situation continue. While PhilHealth Konsulta’s existence is a powerful tool, its potential will remain unrealized until more is done to ensure its visibility and accessibility.

The consequences are not only economic but social. The underutilization of the  program perpetuates inequality in healthcare access, especially for the poor and underserved sectors. In the long run, this could lead to a vicious cycle where the lack of primary care services results in the escalation of medical conditions that would have otherwise been preventable or manageable.

PhilHealth Konsulta is a tool for health equity and justice. The funds allocated for this program belong to the people, and they must not go to waste. If the government and PhilHealth officials take the necessary steps to raise awareness and ensure participation, PhilHealth Konsulta can become the cornerstone of a healthier, more equitable Philippines. It’s time for all Filipinos to realize their right to health and for PhilHealth to fulfill its mandate — so that no one is left behind in this health revolution.

A new batch of young, smart, and beautiful women is ready to compete for the Miss Supermodel Worldwide crown.

They kicked off their pageant journey with the official sashing ceremony held at the Velvet Studio last December 23.

For its 2025 edition, Miss Supermodel Worldwide is celebrating the theme "Faces of Bloom," emphasizing the transformative journey of these young women as they evolve into confident and edgy supermodels.

Ronn Litao, Sales & Marketing Director of Miss Supermodel Worldwide Philippines is excited about their upcoming activities, which include The Miss Supermodel Worldwide Philippines 2025 Runway Show and the High Fashion photo shoot both scheduled from January 16 to 18.

Note that Miss Supermodel Worldwide Philippines has joined forces with Shaped Women Organization, a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting women who are victims of social injustices by providing them access to free private legal services.

"As you all know, our company is technically a newbie in terms of pageantry, but we acknowledge the importance of our partnership in building our network and allowing us to send our message across the country," Ron said.

Also present during the sashing ceremony is Thea Casuncad, reigning Miss Supermodel Worldwide, who gave aspirants sound advice.

“Masasabi ko lang po sa kanila is maging tapat sa sarili nila. Huwag panghihinaan ng loob at magtiwala lang talaga kasi ayon yung magdadala sa kanila sa international stage, yung tiwala mo sa sarili mo, yung lakas ng loob mo,” Thea said.

Winwyn Marquez flaunts bikini bod to greet New Year

BY NEIL RAMOS

Winwyn Marquez surprised fans recently posting on social media several photos of her wearing a two-piece bikini.

In the caption, the beauty queen-actress made it appear as if she’s simply ringing in 2025.

“New year, new photos. Hello, 2025,” she wrote.

However, many believe there is more to the move than that.

They insist that Winwyn is actually dropping a clue about her making a comeback to pageantry this year, particularly the Miss Universe Philippines tilt.

win 1.jpg

Talk about it actually started November last year after Winwyn posted on social media a photo of her holding a flower over her face.

She captioned it with “Filipina” together with a crown emoji.

Just a few weeks later, Winwyn shared a video of her dancing to “Mexicana,” the official song of the recent Miss Universe pageant.

So, is she?

As of writing, Winwyn is yet to confirm the issue.

Winwyn made history in 2017 as the first Filipina to win the Reina Hispanoamericana crown.

No one has duplicated the feat so far.

Note the daughter of screen veterans Joey Marquez and Alma Moreno, is a cousin of Michelle Dee, who competed and finished in the Top 10 of Miss Universe 2023.

Winwyn is mom to daughter Luna.

BLACKPINK to BTS: Big 4 labels set for major events this year

The top four K-pop powerhouses — YG Entertainment, HYBE, SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment — are preparing to take 2025 by storm with full group comebacks and large-scale world tours, ensuring an exciting year for fans worldwide.

YG Entertainment

It has been about three years since YG Entertainment’s girl group BLACKPINK released its last album, “Born Pink.” Though the girls renewed its group contract with YG, the four members — Rose, Jennie, Lisa and Jisoo — have been focusing on their solo act under separate agencies, releasing hit songs like “APT.” for Rose, “Mantra” for Jennie and “Rockstar” for Lisa, while Jisoo is set to star in series and movies.

This year, BLACKPINK is finally slated to reunite as a full group, garnering high anticipation from its global fans.

YG Entertainment’s chief producer and founder Yang Hyun-suk announced in July that in 2025, many of its artists will pick up their act simultaneously. “It will be the year that BLACKPINK's comeback and world tour begins,” he said.

The details and timeline of the group’s new album release and world tour have not yet been revealed, but the group’s comeback is expected to contribute significantly to YG’s financial success this year.

The agency is also set to roll out new releases for its boy group TREASURE, following a leadership shake-up. In a recent video on the agency’s YouTube, Yang revealed that Choi Hyun-suk and Jihoon will pass their leadership positions to Junkyu and Asahi. The group has a new mini-album planned for February and a full-length album in July or August.

“TREASURE plans to showcase a different concept than before … It is preparing an album that can express (the members') honest feelings and approach you more comfortably,” the producer said, adding the group will have various events, including a world tour in October.

HYBE

Since the members of K-pop juggernaut BTS began their mandatory military service one by one in 2022, HYBE’s label BigHit Music has been putting its best effort to fill the void of the members’ hiatus, releasing solo albums the members worked on before enlisting.

Jungkook and Jimin have been dominating domestic and global music charts with their albums “Golden” and “Muse,” respectively, even while serving in the military. Jin and J-hope picked up their solo acts after getting discharged last year.

After about three years, all seven members are to have completed mandatory service, with RM, Suga, V, Jimin and Jungkook being the last to be discharged this June.

When the agency announced the group’s hiatus upon serving in the military, it said it “hopes for BTS to resume activities as a full group in 2025.”

As 2025 also marks the 10th anniversary of “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life” series, BTS' musical trilogy released under the theme of young adulthood, the band is expected to return with a full group release this year.

Another HYBE label, Pledis Entertainment, will have its boy group Seventeen wrap up its "Right Here" world tour in the first half of this year. The band is slated to perform at Mexico's music festival Tecate Pa'l Norte in April.

NewJeans from another HYBE subsidiary, Ador, is expected to go through legal battles with its agency after the members declared the termination of its exclusive contract in November — a claim the agency refuted.

SM Entertainment

SM Entertainment has been known as one of the most crucial pillars in K-pop history since it was founded in 1995. The company produced first-generation K-pop artists like H.O.T and S.E.S and continues its success with fifth-generation stars like aespa and NCT.

The agency is celebrating its 30th anniversary this February with a two-day festival, “SM Town Live 2025.”

The concert, which will be held on Jan. 11 and Jan. 12 at Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro District, Seoul, will invite major artists who have been under the agency over the decades, like Tony An from H.O.T. and Bada from S.E.S., BoA and TVXQ as well as Red Velvet, NCT 127, aespa and its first virtual artist Naevis.

The concert will start in Seoul and tour in four different cities — Mexico City, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo — until August.

This year, the agency plans to take another step toward debuting its first new girl group in five years.

JYP Entertainment

JYP Entertainment will be running major concert tours worldwide for its big-name artists like Stray Kids and Day6.

Stray Kids, which had historic success as the first artist in Billboard's 69-year history to top the Billboard 200 six consecutive times last month, will be picking up its world tour on a bigger scale. The group is scheduled to begin the second leg of its “dominATE” world tour in March, adding five Latin American and five European destinations for the first time since their debut, alongside 10 cities in North America.

The tour is expected to draw an average audience of 50,000 per show, with a total attendance of almost 1 million people.

JYP’s breakout band Day6 is also slated to hold its world tour to expand its global fan base, traveling to cities like Jakarta, Osaka, Manila, Sydney, Los Angeles and New York throughout May for its third world tour, “Forever Young,” which kicked off in September in Incheon.

Court of Appeals: TVJ owns 'Eat Bulaga!' trademark

After a year of brawling, the Court of Appeals has finally put an end relating the rightful ownership of the iconic "Eat Bulaga" trademark.

The appellate court's ninth division upheld the ruling of the Marikina Regional Trial Court Branch 273 favoring Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon's claim of the "Eat Bulaga" name.

The CA maintained that the original decision pertaining to the ownership of the well-liked noontime variety show's title was error-free.

The CA also confirmed that Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) is liable for unfair competition and copyright infringement.

It also ordered TAPE and GMA to refrain from using "Eat Bulaga" and "EB."

It also ordered the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines to cancel TAPE’s trademark registrations for "Eat Bulaga," "EB," and any corresponding logos.

The ruling asserted that "the exclusive right of scientists, inventors, as well as artists and gifted citizens over their intellectual property and creations, must be protected and secured" and that covers Tito, Vic and Joey, and one of EB's creatives Jenny Ferre.

"Awareness of, and compliance with, intellectual property laws is certainly the obligation of all persons, natural or juridical," the CA added.

"To attain the advantages provided by society's scientists, inventors, artists, and other gifted citizens, there must be respect for and enforcement of their rights and one way to carry this through is to guard against unauthorized trespass."

Despite being aware that Joey was responsible for the show's name, the CA claimed that TAPE "resorted to bad faith and fraud" when it asserted ownership of the "Eat Bulaga" trademark in 2011.

CA Associate Justice Zenaida T. Galapate-Laguilles wrote the ruling on December 13, 2023.

Associate Justices Carlito B. Calpatura and Selma Palacio Alaras concurred.

TAPE is set to appeal the court's decision.
