In the Philippines, Christmas is a major annual celebration, as in most countries of the Christian world. It is celebrated as a public holiday in the country on December 25, concurrent with other countries.
As one of the two predominantly Catholic countries in Asia (the other one being East Timor), the Philippines celebrates the world's longest Christmas season spanning what it refers to as the "ber months".With Christmas music played as early as August, the holiday season gradually begins by September, reaching its peak in December.
The celebrations of Christmas in the Philippines have deep influences ofCatholicism, tracing their roots back to Spanish colonial rule from 1521 to 1898. Currently, the Philippines holds the longest running festivity of theChristmas season in the world, which begins on September 1.
Christmas Day in the Philippines is primarily a family affair. The Misa de Gallo is celebrated on December 25 and is usually one of several Masses that all family members (including non-churchgoers) are present and is often celebrated between 10 pm and midnight, a schedule preferred by many Filipinos who stay up late on Christmas Eve for the night-long celebration of the Noche Buena. Fireworks and most merrymaking devices are sometimes used at the start of Christmas.
Preferably in the morning, Filipinos typically visit their extended family, especially to pay their respects to senior relatives. This custom of giving respect is enacted through the "Págmamáno". A supplicant takes the back of an elder's hand and presses it against the forehead while giving the greeting, Máno, pô (lit. "[Thy] hand, please"). The elder often responds by reciting a blessing or simply acknowledging the gesture, and in return gives "Aguinaldo" or money in the form of crisp banknotes, often placed in a sealed envelope such as an ang pao. Godparents, in particular, are socially obligated to give presents or aguinaldo to their godchildren, to whom they often give larger amounts compared to other younger relatives.
A festive lunch may follow the "Págmamáno". The menu is heavily dependent upon the finances of the family, with richer families preparing grand feasts while poorer families choose to cook simple yet special dishes. Some families choose to open presents on this day after lunch.
When nighttime falls, members of the family usually return home or linger to drink, play parlor games, and chat. Some may opt to have another feast for dinner, while a minority spend the entire day at home to rest after the previous days' festivities.
The song "Christmas in Our Hearts", released by Jose Mari Chan in 1990 has become the most famous song for Christmas in the Philippines. It is synonymous with the start of the Christmas season, often played in homes, shopping malls, and on radio stations as early as September.
For many Filipinos, simply being with friends and family is the essence of Christmas. It's the time when Balikbayan relatives come home and barkada reunions abound. Busy students and office workers take breaks to stay home with their parents.
Christmas in the Philippines became the most touching event for me since I am living here as an expat.
Christmas in the Philippines is a big deal. Unlike in most other parts of the world, Filipinos begin celebrating Christmas in September. The “ber” months, as they are called, herald the start of the Christmas season with traditional lanterns being made, carols heard in shops, and Christmas gifts stacked high on shelves. Many people ask: “Do they celebrate Christmas in the Philippines?” and the answer to that is a resounding “Yes!”
Sweet words are easy to say; nice things are easy to buy; but good people are different to find. Life ends, when you stop dreaming; hope ends, when you stop believing; friendship stops, when you stop sharing. A good friend of mine sent me this quotation. I commented back: So very true and very well said!
We're thinking back. We deleted friends in social networks and different other connections. Some mutual friends - not only on Facebook - didn't remain as mutual. Some good new relationships have begun and made possible because of a mutual acquaintance. Or, we're looking forward to renewing relationships. Some seasonal greetings brought back special memories.
Keep in mind, our life is borrowed. This is going to be a little bit complicated now, so keep going. No rental charges are collected from us. Many of us have forgotten this and live life to the fullest. Our life is equal to a book from a library that lends one. But how insatiable and unbearable are we in disdainful acting towards life and therefore to ourselves?
Life seems to be nothing, just being ready to riddle one with bullets. Life seems to be nothing, just being broken through indifference and unreliable and immoral behavior. Life seems to be nothing for those people who don't understand cries from the heart of other people around them - cries for their hearts and families, for justice and for many other things.
Life with all its ups and downs, is just a loan, but for many of our fellow creatures it just seems to be nonsense to be littered like a dump. And, if people try to survive, especially during these days, and if they just experienced (once more!) indifference, arrogance, ignorance or cheating by whomever - they will give up!
I can assure you that every one of us can at first help in prayers and in reading the bible. "Proverbs" is the probably most down-to-earth book in the bible. Its teachings prepare you for daily life, the street and the market place, but not for the schoolroom. The book offers warm pieces of advice you get; practical guidance for making your way on earth. Proverbs covers any kinds of questions you might have right now. Anybody can relate to the generalities of Proverbs, because this book simply tells how life works most of the time.

Eyewitness footage obtained by Reuters on Sunday (December 29) showed the moment a Jeju Air plane crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, killing 62 people.
The coming of a new year always inspires people to reflect on their lives and set goals to improve themselves. This annual ritual, known as making New Year’s resolutions, has become a tradition around the world. These goals reflect a universal desire to turn over a new leaf, yet their execution often proves more challenging than anticipated.
Throughout the year, people struggle to keep their resolutions, most of these being dropped a few months after. Recent studies have shown that New Year’s resolutions have a high failure rate. Research studies estimate that only nine percent of people successfully keep their resolutions for an entire year. The reasons for the failure are unrealistic goals, lack of planning, impatience, and external pressures, such as the demands of daily life.
The most common themes in New Year’s resolutions are on health and financial well-being.
A survey by Drive Research found that 79 percent of New Year’s goals involve improving health, including exercising more, eating healthier, and losing weight. A 2024 survey by a U.S. organization found that the top resolution among 23 percent of the respondents – which is also a universal theme in resolutions – is to save more money. Another resolution related to financial health is to pay off debts.
Other health-related resolutions often include improving sleep habits and managing stress by adopting stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, or mindfulness practices. Other surveys include resolutions on personal development (learning new skills), working on relationships (spending more time with family), and breaking bad habits (quitting smoking or cutting back on alcohol) as popular themes.

The practice of making resolutions dates back over 4,000 years to ancient Babylon during a New Year festival where people would make promises to their gods in hopes of earning divine favor. In ancient Rome, Julius Caesar established Jan. 1 as the start of the year, naming the month after Janus, the two-faced god symbolizing the past and the future. Romans offered sacrifices to Janus and vowed to improve their lives.
Centuries later, early Christians adopted the tradition, using New Year’s Day to reflect on past mistakes and resolve to live better lives in the future. Today, this practice has evolved into a secular, global phenomenon, with millions crafting resolutions aimed at personal growth and fulfillment.
To improve oneself for a better life has been on the minds of people around the world and through the ages. And New Year’s resolutions – even if these are not kept until the end of the year –show that we are challenged by the same hope.
Guided by our past years’ resolutions on the common themes, many of us will again take time to make promises for new behavior in the new year. Today is Sunday, a good day to do that.
As we reflect on our resolutions for 2025, may we be guided by gratefulness to list goals that we can achieve, and most of all, that will also benefit the people we live and work with. Include in your list doing acts of kindness and taking a 30-minute walk – at least twice a week.

We closed 2023 with Juan Karlos suspended in the air with his Ere and now we are closing 2024 with alt pop act Dionela who scored big with Sining featuring R&B star Jay R. He is now on the solo route with the No. 1 selling Marilag. Between them are the music of some of the most exciting music discoveries ever and of long-time favorites who continue to dominate the hit lists year after year.
We still had the usual hitmakers from overseas like Taylor Swift, Cruel Summer; Bruno Mars, Die with a Smile with Lady Gaga; Ariana Grande, We Can’t Be Friends and others. But not a lot of them compared what the Pinoys accomplished. It was, in truth a superb year for original Filipino music. And I am happy that local acts mostly outsold the foreigners in their own turf and they also filled up concert halls.
Dionela with Jay-R
Leading the pack was the girl group BINI which finally broke through to the big time after five years of trying. They had a sparkling summery sound that kids absolutely loved. Their hits like Pantropiko, Cherry on Top, Salamin Salamin and Karera earned them recognition here and abroad, including the MTV EMA for Best Asian Act. They also sold out the Smart Araneta Coliseum for two nights.
BINI was not the only one who scored big in the concert scene. In fact, live entertainment had an excellent year in 2024. We had great foreign acts like Laufey, Akon, Ne-yo, Enhypen, Stray Kids, 2NE1 and Dua Lipa but I am, of course, proudest of the local guys.
Ben&Ben
Juan Karlos had the MOA in SRO mode. So did December Avenue and Ben&Ben. Arthur Nery was at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. So was SB-19. Katrina Velarde packed the New Frontier Theater. So did newcomer Maki. Even long-established idols like Martin Nievera, Lea Salonga, Gary Valenciano, Raymond Lauchengco and Mark Bautista had great turns on stage. Let us wish for more of these in 2025.
As for the hits, here according to Billboard Philippines are the most downloaded, the most streamed, the most performed and most listened to songs in 2024. There are new names like the reclusive hip-hop idol from Morato, Hev Abi and familiar ones like Up Dharma Down whose Tadhana has been in the top rungs of the hit lists for almost a decade. Check them out.
Maki with TJ Monterde and KZ Tandingan.

You can check out Billboard Philippines for the rest of the hit tunes by which we will remember this passing year.
And before I forget, 2024 was also the year when Jose Mari Chan succumbed to public demand. No more sneaking around or peeping from corners for our Mr. Christmas. After demurring for years, he finally launched the earliest celebration of the season in the world by performing Christmas in our Hearts live in a mall show.

Häufigstes Schmerzmittel mit überraschenden Nebenwirkungen
Anzeige
Medikamente gegen Schmerzen: Welcher Wirkstoff hilft?
(diase)
