From Piñata to Pescaíto: Event Highlights in May

Culinary discoveries, informative events, cultural performances, and more — the events in May show what makes InterNations the special place it is.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity

Did you know? Wednesday, 21 May, was World Day for Cultural Diversity — not that the InterNations Community needs any prompting to connect across cultures!

The Dublin Africans and Friends Group headed to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham to join the local Africa Day celebrations — food, music, and cultural performances included.

Speaking of Africa: on 12 May, the Virtual Travel Group hosted another one of their “Countries around the World” sessions, this time focused on the Central African Republic. Through short video presentations, guest speakers, and panel discussions with natives, these sessions give attendees a glimpse into the respective country and its culture.

And Guangzhou turned into Mexico — at least a little — for the Cinco De Mayo Fiesta on 10 May. Attendees enjoyed a variety of delicious Mexican dishes, received souvenirs sponsored by the Mexican Consulate, tried their luck with the piñata, and had a lot of fun socializing and dancing the night away.

Tasting Traditional Flavors

Local cuisine plays a large role in most cultures; and Italy is no different. In Copenhagen, the Brunch & Coffee Group got the chance to try an Italian treat that doesn’t usually make it onto the menu of your local pizza and pasta place: Olive Ascolane.

Italian food was also on the agenda of the Santiago de Chile Movies & Theatre Group, who Welcomed May at an Italian Place on Labor Day.

Ambassadors in Seville invited everyone to a Pescaito Pre-Feria Night on 2 May. Feria de Abril is an iconic week-long festival in Seville, where fried fish (pescaíto frito) is a traditional treat. Plus, attendees enjoyed dancing — or learned to dance — the Sevillanas to live Flamenco music.

If you’re in Reading on 29 May, you have the chance to sample some traditional Romanian food with the DinnerNations Group. But hurry, there are only a few spots left!

Of Road Trips & Weekend Tours

We packed the bus with dreams and light,
Chased fading roads into the night ...

With these lovely words (and more — the whole event description was a poem!), the Trinidad & Tobago’s Ambassadors invited the community on a Road Trip to Sans Souci that took place last Sunday, 18 May.

You’re in Stockholm this Sunday, 25 May? Then why not join the Out & About Group as they Explore the Baltic History in Sweden at a special exhibition of the National Maritime Museum.

Also this weekend, the Lisbon Portugal Explorers Group will journey to the Southern Alentejo region. Next to visiting Beja and Serpa, their itinerary also includes attending the Islamic Festival at Mértola. Safe travels, everyone!
