ROUSED TO ANGER?

Anger. A day rarely goes by without us feeling angry. It is not necessary to cite examples. Sometimes, it's just a minor reason like we hate the fly at the wall. Sometimes anger has important reasons.

Anger seems to become the main part of our daily life. That's why it is really important to talk (again?) about this phenomenon. As I said, anger is one of the most basic emotions. Everyone can really get angry. If someone told you, he won't get angry, better don't believe him.

Anger is a terrible feeling of being against something or someone. It can be my neighbor, because he is still (!) burning poisonous plastic and rubber garbage. Many of us get angry observing some politicians during those days worldwide.

Anger is a hostile emotion that sets people against one and another, or even against themselves. By its nature, anger involves opposition, hostility, hatred and dislike. Anger, however, is simpler to define than to identify. Emotions of antagonism can take a wider variety of faces. Expressions of anger range from the overt, in-your-face brand of open hostility to the cold indifference of a silent individual.

Anger at the workplace is becoming very common nowadays.

One of my good friends works as a stewardess. Imagine yourself 35,000 feet up, pushing a trolley down a narrow aisle surrounded by restless passengers. A toddler is blocking your path, his parents not immediately visible. A passenger is irritated that he can no longer pay cash for an in-flight meal, another is demanding to be allowed past to use the toilet. And your job is to meet all of their needs with the same show of friendly willingness. For a cabin crew member, this is when emotional labor kicks in at work.

A term first coined by sociologist Arlie Hochschild, it’s the work we do to regulate our emotions to create “a publicly visible facial and bodily display within the workplace”.

At times, anger can be felt like an inner fire. It hits you in the gut. You see red and feel hot and maybe sweaty. Your stomach gives you problems, our blood pressure rises, and breathing rate increases. Not only neighbors or politicians are the reason for anger. The silent withdrawal and lack of understanding and innumerable shortcomings of a partner or in the family are often an indication that one is angrily punishing the other for not doing things his or her way.

Back to the workplace: unhelpful attitudes such as ‘I’m not good enough’ may lead to thinking patterns in the workplace such as ‘No-one else is working as hard as I seem to be’ or ‘I must do a perfect job’, and can initiate and maintain high levels of workplace anxiety.

When research into emotional labor first began, it focused on the service industry with the underlying presumption that the more client or customer interaction you had, the more emotional labor was needed.

However, more recently psychologists have expanded their focus to other professions and found burnout can relate more closely to how employees manage their emotions during interactions, rather than the volume of interactions themselves. Perhaps just only today you turned to a colleague to convey interest in what they said, or had to work hard not to rise to criticism. It may have been that biting your lip rather than expressing feeling hurt was particularly demanding of your inner resource.

But in some cases maintaining the façade can become too much, and the toll is cumulative.

In another friend's last position, the “customer was king”.  She was working in a shopping mall. Many times, she got a tirade of abuse from several customers. “When I explained what happened to my senior, I was told I must have said or done something to warrant this response… I was then told I should go and apologize.” Yes, that's how it is!

As I stated earlier: Minor things could become the start of anger. Over the years, handling the stress caused by suppressing one's emotions became much harder. Small things seemed huge, we easily dreaded going to work and  anxiety escalated.

Across the globe, employees in many professions are expected to embrace a work culture that requires the outward display of particular emotions – these can include ambition, aggression and a hunger for success.

The way we handle emotional labor can be categorized in two ways – surface acting and deep acting.

A few years ago, the New York Times wrote a “lengthy piece about the “Amazon Way”, describing very specific and exacting behaviour the retail company required of its employees and the effects, both positive and negative, that this had on some of them. While some appeared to thrive in the environment, others struggled with constant pressure to show the correct corporate face.

“How we cope with high levels of emotional labour likely has its origins in childhood experience, which shapes the attitudes we develop about ourselves, others and the world,” says clinical and occupational psychologist Lucy Leonard.

“Unhelpful attitudes such as ‘I’m not good enough’ may lead to thinking patterns in the workplace such as ‘No-one else is working as hard as I seem to be’ or ‘I must do a perfect job”, and can initiate and maintain high levels of workplace anxiety,” says Leonard.

Workers are often expected to provide good service to people expressing anger or anxiety – and may have to do this while feeling frustrated, worried or offended themselves.

Take the example of a particularly tough phone call. If you are surface acting you respond to the caller by altering your outward expression, saying the appropriate things, listening while keeping your actual feelings entirely intact. With deep acting you make a deliberate effort to change your real feelings to tap in to what the person is saying – you may not agree with the manner of it but appreciate the aim.

Both could be thought of as just being polite but the latter approach – trying to emotionally connect with another person’s point of view – is associated with a lower risk of burnout. Good thing: many offices over the last decade have created recreational or rest spaces in a bid to mitigate employee stress.

When things get tough, you might be very lucky  talking to colleagues to unload. “It’s the saying it out loud that allows me to test and validate my own reaction. I can then go back to the person concerned,” one of my former officemates in Germany explained many years ago.

Those who report regularly having to display emotions at work that conflict with their own feelings are more likely to experience emotional exhaustion

Remaining true to your feelings appears to be key – numerous studies show those who report regularly having to display emotions at work that conflict with their own feelings are more likely to experience emotional exhaustion.

Of course, everybody needs to be professional at work and handling difficult clients and colleagues is often just part of the job. But what’s clear is that putting yourself in their shoes and trying to understand their position is ultimately of greater benefit to your own well-being than voicing sentiments that, deep down, you don’t believe.

Where it is possible, workers should be truly empathetic, be aware of the impact the interaction is having on them and try to communicate in an authentic way. Easy to say, yes, I know. But let's give it a try!

ABS-CBN, TV5 drop merger deal

By Aric John Sy Cua  and Arlie O. Calalo

RIVAL networks ABS-CBN and TV5 have called off the investment deal they signed earlier following an initiative in the House of Representatives to have the agreement investigated.

Competing cable companies Sky Cable and Cignal have also terminated their deal.

In a statement it released on Thursday, ABS-CBN said: "In disclosures to both the Philippine Stock Exchange and the Securities Exchange Commission today, Sky Vision Corporation ('Sky Vision'), ABS-CBN Corporation, Lopez Inc. and Cignal Cable Corporation ('Cignal Cable') announced that they have mutually agreed to terminate the sale and purchase agreement dated August 10, 2022."

The agreement involved the acquisition by Cignal Cable of a 38.88-percent equity interest in Sky Cable and the subscription by Cignal Cable to an "exchangeable debt instrument to be issued by Sky Vision and the proposed acquisition by Cignal Cable of a convertible note issued by Sky Cable."

ABS-CBN said that the termination was formalized through a memorandum of agreement.

In a separate disclosure, the two networks said they have "mutually agreed to terminate" their agreement covering the proposed acquisition by ABS-CBN of 34.99-percent equity interest in TV5 and the subscription by ABS-CBN to a "convertible note" to be issued by TV5.

TV5 has been broadcasting some ABS-CBN shows after the franchise of the former media flagship of the Lopezes was not renewed in 2020.

The two networks then revealed they were working out some kind of a merger.

Sagip Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, who was at the forefront of the campaign to deny ABS-CBN a new franchise, promptly declared he will have the House investigate the deal.

Another critic of the merger, lawyer Lorenzo "Larry" Gadon, said on Thursday TV5 might have eventually realized that the agreement could jeopardize the company's future.

"What cannot be done directly, cannot be done indirectly," Gadon told The Manila Times.

"The TV5-ABS-CBN deal on the sale of 35 percent stockholdings may cause the revocation of the franchise of TV5 or may cause the denial of its application for a renewal once its franchise expires," he said.

Gadon ran for senator last May under the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, the party of the father of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., former president Ferdinand E. Marcos.

He said that because the ABS-CBN is tainted with foreign funds, "the whole equity of TV5 will also become tainted with foreign funds."

Such a merger will also violate the constitutional requirement that a mass media organization must be fully Filipino owned, he said.

PH gets recognition anew; Palawan topped the 21st Wanderlust awards

by Jun Marcos Tadios, MB

Palawan was hailed as the Most Desirable Island in the world at the recently concluded 21st Wanderlust Travel Awards in the United Kingdom (UK), the Department of Tourism (DOT) disclosed on Thursday, Nov. 10.

DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said the new recognition of Palawan reflects the beauty and competitiveness of the Philippines in word spectacle.

The award was given on Wednesday, Nov. 9, by the prestigious Wanderlust travel magazine.

Cebu was also nominated this year as the Most Desirable Region (Rest of the World) by the award-giving body.

“On behalf of the Department of Tourism, we thank the readers of Wanderlust Magazine for their love and support for the Philippines!” said Frasco, adding, “The recognition reflects the effort of the government to revive the tourism industry.”

Frasco vowed that the DOT and its attached agencies would continue to herald the beauty and rich culture of the Filipino people.

“Rest assured that we will continue with our mission to herald the Philippines and the Filipino brand to the world and to ensure the continued sustainability of our islands,” she noted.

The Philippine Tourism Board, through the Philippine Department of Tourism-Central Visayas Office, also placed 6th among hundreds of entries in the Wanderlust Sustainability Initiative Category for its Dive7 Program.

Earlier this year, Conde Nast Travel (CNT) also named the Philippines among the 40 most beautiful countries worldwide, specifically citing the remarkable cave system of the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the mysteriously uniform Chocolate Hills of Bohol, and the panoramic views of the Banaue and Cordilleras Rice Terraces.

The following month, the renowned Travel + Leisure magazine also named the country’s tourist magnets Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu part of the 25 Best Islands in the World.

Time Magazine also lauded Boracay as one of the 50 World’s Greatest Places of 2022.

In September, the Philippines topped Asia’s leading dive, and beach destination, while the historic Walled City of Intramuros was Asia’s leading tourist attraction at the World Travel Awards (WTA) in Vietnam.

The series of awards added to the country’s long list of recognitions earned at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diaz hopes to maintain or surpass her bronze medal finishes in the 2015 Houston, 2017 Anaheim and 2019 Pattaya editions, while Sarno and Ando seek a podium finish after both placed fifth in their weight classes last year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Beating expectations, Philippines posts faster Q3 growth despite inflation

Ramon Royandoyan - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine economy managed to squeeze out a modest growth in the third quarter, beating expectations of a slower expansion in the face of boiling inflation.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew 7.6% year-on-year in the July-September period, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported Thursday.

The latest reading was slightly faster compared to the upwardly revised 7.5% expansion recorded in the previous quarter. It was also way past market expectations of a 6.1% growth.

Quarter-on-quarter, the PSA said GDP grew 2.9%, a turnaround from 0.1% contraction posted in the preceding quarter.

READ: No reprieve for Filipinos as inflation boils to over 10-year high in October

That the economy grew slightly faster last quarter came as a surprise as consumer spending, a major growth engine, feels the heat of sizzling inflation. Data showed household final consumption expenditure grew 8.0% year-on-year in the third quarter, slower than 8.6% recorded in the preceding three months.

Three subsectors that was responsible for last quarter’s growth: restaurants and hotels, transport, and food. The PSA reckoned that consumer spending hit P10.37 trillion in the first nine months, accounting for 73% of GDP.

Consumer spending did all the heavy-lifting while government support fades. Data showed government spending sharply slowed to 0.8% annually in the third quarter from 11.1% in the second quarter. Speaking to reporters, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the national government downloaded much of its spending earlier in the first half of the year. This meant, there were fewer public resources available to spend.

Nicholas Mapa, senior economist at ING Bank in Manila, said Filipinos are likely extending so-called “revenge spending” activities after almost two full years under lockdowns. This, despite an elevated inflation that’s pushing up the cost of living.

“One explanation would be overseas Filipino remittances which may be supercharged by a more favorable exchange rate.  However we believe that consumers are also digging deeper into savings, which unfortunately have yet to return to pre-Covid levels,” Mapa said in an e-mailed commentary.

“For now, it appears that households can fund extended revenge spending activities by drawing down on savings for a little longer however this could increase their vulnerability to potential shocks to income down the road,” he added.

Leonardo Lanzona, an economist at Ateneo De Manila University, shared the same view. “Perhaps people had started hoarding in anticipation of higher prices,” he said.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas had projected in August that inflation would peak by September or October, but the latest data showed that might not be the case. The PSA earlier reckoned price growth would accelerate further in November, as the damage wrought by recent typhoons has yet to be priced in.

Despite the inflation onslaught, the Marcos administration is still on track to meet its watered-down goal. In the first nine months of the year, GDP averaged 7.7%, above the government’s 6.5-7.5% target for 2022.

Domini Velasquez, chief economist at China Banking Corp., said this would strengthen the case for another set of interest rate hikes. The benchmark rate is now at 4.25% and is expected to soar higher as the BSP vows to match the US Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hikes.

“It also provides more room for wiggle room for the BSP to raise rates by at least 6% without slowing growth too much,” she said in a Viber message.

Neben Beitragssatz: Auch Rentenniveau zukünftig stabil – Minsiter Heil will aber Reformen

Davao de Oro's 2022 National Children's Month to raise mental health awareness and more interventions

To boost advocacy on the welfare and protection of children, the provincial government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), successfully participated in the 30th National Children's Month (NCM) kick-off ceremony held at the Capitol lobby on November 8, 2022.

This year's theme, “Kalusugan, Kaisipan, at Kapakanan ng Bawat Bata Ating Tutukan,” focused on the mental health and well-being of children after the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) found out that in 2021 mental health was among the problems encountered by children due to the pandemic.

Around 400 children participated in the festivities, as they received loot bags, party snacks, and being entertained by clown shows. Filipina child star/actress Yesha Camile also gave an inspirational message and song for the children.

Meanwhile, Governor Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga administered the oath to parents and teachers (Panatang Makabata), emphasizing the importance of protecting children's rights.

"Special Month ni ninyu mga bata ... tanang makaayu ninyu buhaton namo ... kaming tanan diri nga mga dili bata... palangga kaayu mo namo" matud ni Gov. Gonzaga.

Provincial Child Welfare Focal Preciosa Toledo said in an interview that the provincial government will continue to strengthen its mental health support services for children. Such interventions include psychosocial treatments, counseling, family therapy, support hotlines, and among others that are in line with their rights to survival, development, protection, and participation.

"Pakusgan nato ang mga programang hisgutanan on protection of our children. Ang atong opisina sa PSWDO andam kaayu nga muhatag sa serbisyo (ug) ginapakusgan nato ang adbokasiya kung unsaon nato pag-detect ang atong mga bata nga naa nay mga issues on mental health" Toledo said.

Ms. Toledo added that more programs await the children this month that include the provincial children's congress and Bulilit Fun Day which will be participated by the day care children of the province.

Further, on the culmination day, November 28, 2022, Governor Gonzaga will be presenting her Local State of the Children's Report as part of the month-long activities.

Under Republic Act 10661, the month of November is designated as NCM celebration to commemorate the adoption of the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) on November 20, 1989. (JF, Photos by A. Dayao)

Which is a better place to live, Davao or Cebu? Why?

Any of the two, actually. Both cities are bustling metropolitans here in the Philippines; with constant economic growth and paradise-like sceneries. But to guide you better, check on some pointers laid down below. I’ve also attached some video highlights to entice you more to choose any of these two amazing cities! *winks*

Why choose Davao?

  • Listed as one of the safest cities in the world
  • An ideal place for start-up businesses and entrepreneurial ventures
  • Much fresher air and cleaner environment
  • Cheap cost of living
  • Not so much of a metropolitan as there is less skyscrapers and buildings

Why choose Cebu?

  • Have access to better quality of life and better standard of healthcare
  • Experience a metro lifestyle with a provincial rate
  • Considered as an economic hotspot (well or course, second to Manila)
  • More ideas for recreational activities
  • The entire island is laid with the best beaches, waterfalls, and mountain tops to make you feel like one with nature.

One might argue that these two cities are both heaven here on earth. I am not saying that it is but rather you’re more likely to achieve a relaxing, calming, and laidback way of living in these cities rather than in Metro Manila.
