Following a viral social media post, Filipino actress and singer Maris Racal trended in the Philippines as a top search term on Google on Dec. 4, according to Google Trends.

The trend emerged after fellow actor Anthony Jennings’s ex-girlfriend Jamela Villanueva posted screenshots of private messages between Racal and Jennings on Instagram at around midnight on Dec. 4, which instantly went viral among Filipino netizens.

The search term “Maris Racal” scored a 100 in the Philippines just before 1 a.m., which signified that Filipinos were searching for her the most on Google at that time. The search interest in Racal remained high throughout the morning of Dec. 4.

YEAR AFTER YEAR

By Klaus Döring

The expressions year after year and year by year have similar meanings, but there are differences in the way they are used. Year after year is often used to focus attention on the fact that something is repeated over and over, as in this example sentence: We vacationed there year after year, until our kids grew up.

Gift giving and receiving and Christmas simply but surely go together is another example.  Many times, it incurs our indignation. Only reluctantly, many of us defer the most important decision during the most jolliest season of the year. What is the best Christmas gift for our loved ones??? Is it really an important decision, or does it delete the real meaning of Christmas? I am sure, many of us know the real answer.

The giving spirit of the holiday season seems to fade in the light of necessary obligations and finances, along with the painful dilemma of giving gifts to those who want to buy as opposed to those for whom you should buy!

Let's think about it: To whom are we obligated at Christmas: our boss, our cousins, our parents, our partner or our children and friends as well? What about the children? Should they give presents to people either then family members? How about the innumerable large families especially in the Philippines, because of economics, resort to the name drawing process at Christmas.

For me, firstly, Christmas is spirit. You can always find ways to give gifts without expenses. The most well known and always remembered gift is to give to someone like giving time. In my family we do this mostly during the holiday season.

But if I look more around, mmh, sad to say, that "time as gift" doesn't satisfy most of all.Well, it's okay. There are so many ways to use your mind in terms of giving someone other things than putting Peso, Euro or Dollar notes. I am sure you know that home made gifts can also be a very good idea... .

Sure, there is etiquette of gift giving at Christmas and also other occasions. Homemade gifts are most appropriate especially as Christmas gifts, according to Stuart E. Jacobson, book author of "The Art of Giving". Allow me to quote Jacobson, "Homemade gifts are wonderful. A gift of imagination, a gift of creativity, a gift that shows (also!) time was put into it. A created time is a wonderful present."

When considering a homemade gift, instead of tumbling through crowded shopping malls (as I tried again yesterday - just some days until Christmas!) and getting a headache (I really got!)! While stumbling from one mall to the next, I found out again, that the real and whole essence of giving a gift is to bring pleasure to the person receiving it. Jacobson says in his book, "Homemade gifts are also ideal for children to give as presents. Kids can create things because they have a unique imagination. Children should feel free to give something to anyone they spend a lot of time with. No monetary value should be placed on what a child should give to someone."

Very well said. I am just afraid that it seems more or less impossible nowadays in these modern times... .

Christmas wonder

Anna Cristina Tuazon

The Christmas season is in full swing. The lighting of Christmas trees has started in various city centers. Parol and lanterns are strung up along avenues. Christmas festivals and marketplaces have been set up, enticing Filipinos to go out and shop. Most welcoming of all is that most Christmas sights are free or at little cost. From a usual lack of public leisure spaces, we are suddenly faced with an abundance of lights and decors, with every city boasting its own attraction.

“Make sure to pass by the munisipyo,” reminded my sister-in-law during a hometown visit in Rizal. Sure enough, we were awed by the brightly lit arches and yuletide ornaments. From nondescript government buildings relevant only for business transactions, these buildings now feel like genuine communal spaces, with families spending quality time together after a hard day’s work, groups of teenagers laughing and hanging out, workers sampling holiday food from street stalls.

It makes sense to me that Filipinos celebrate Christmas for as long as they can, from September to January. The more chaotic and challenging our daily life becomes, the more we need Christmas. Filipinos are known to celebrate even in the hardest of times. During disasters, our sense of humor and fun get us through—just look at children going for a swim in floodwaters, a practice now discouraged by the Department of Health due to the risk of leptospirosis and other diseases. When our politics venture into the absurd, we use our uncanny ability to make a meme out of life (a sign of Filipinos’ creativity, despite what the Programme for International Student Assessment says). If there’s even a bit of fun in something, you bet Filipinos can find it.

Wer 2024 in Rente geht, muss 83 Prozent versteuern. 17 Prozent bleiben steuerfrei. 2025 sind es immerhin 16,5 Prozent, 2026 16 Prozent.

MUSIC AND RELIGION

For centuries music has been associated and has been an important part of the religious culture to promote and influence religion among the people. Music helps to enhance human consciousness in a pleasant way that makes humans praise through a medium of worship, which is more enjoyable.

There is a significant emotional dimension to churchgoing music as it often facilitates an outpouring of emotions by worshipers. Religious music can also be seen as a form of proselytization where potential worshippers are attracted via music to join existing worshippers.

Music and religion belong together like fish and the ocean, light and life, the voice and the ear. In the entire universe, we humans are probably the only beings capable of creating and hearing music.

The ability to hear is one of the specific gifts that our Creator gave us. Our more and more fragile blue planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gases only a few kilometers high. Only this atmosphere is the reason why sound waves can spread through the air. Everything behind this atmosphere is ruled by the sheer endless vacuum of outer space, where galaxies and stars explode and implode in impenetrable silence.

I always thought about it while being on air with several radio music programs in the Philippines during the last 20 years.

According to the biblical narrative, the world began when God broke through this deadly quiet: "And God said: Let there be light!" (Genesis 1:1). God spoke - and light and life resulted from His audible voice. Because life was created by the word, it depends on the word. That is why it is in the nature of every person to listen. Like a parabolic mirror, our souls are created to listen to the eternal space of the hereafter, to try and sense whether a word, a sound or a voice is trying to reach us from there, in order to fill us with meaning.

Whether it's background music for prayer or a full-on worship song, Christian music can create an ambiance that fosters spiritual connection. It can help clear our minds of distractions, allowing us to focus solely on communicating with God.

I love music. I can't live without them. Hold on, this is not one of my earlier columns in this paper. But from time to time, I need to express myself if it comes to this topic. And, I know that Filipinos love big tunes with great words and beautiful melodies, especially when it comes to classical music. Classical music as in Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin, or especially now, during the season Johann Sebastian Bach or Georg Friedrich Händel. And we should never forget such great Filipino composers such as delos Reyes or Buencamino (especially his Mayon Concert Fantasy).

Bamboo for the future

As groundbreaking initiatives go, the Bamboo Bootcamp and Hayag Farm School in Davao del Sur have emerged as catalysts for sustainable construction and community development.

The Bamboo Bootcamp, a workshop for builders, has not only birthed one of the tallest bamboo structures in the Philippines but is also revitalizing traditional building techniques and fostering a deeper connection to the environment. Its center of operations, the Hayag Farm School, has enabled Indigenous people to relearn fabrication skills and celebrate their connection to their land.

“The headquarters of the farm school and Bamboo Bootcamp in Baganihan, Marilog district is a living laboratory for sustainable living. We’ve established a bamboo village where we teach Indigenous people and anyone interested on sustainable building methods, such as bamboo construction and earth building, which uses clay, mud, and limestone as alternatives to cement. We’ve also incorporated permaculture principles into our curriculum,” says Rica Villanueva Gadi, CEO of Bamboo Bootcamp.

Why ‘Uninvited’ is a film you can‘t ignore, according to producer

Nathalie Tomada - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — For the producer of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2024 entry “Uninvited,” the drama thriller topbilled by Vilma Santos, Aga Muhlach and Nadine Lustre, is a risky but necessary project for taking on difficult themes rarely addressed in mainstream Philippine cinema.

From the trailer, viewers are introduced to the characters of Vilma (as Lilia/Eva), Aga (Guilly) and Nadine who are present at a lavish celebration at an opulent mansion, which spirals into a night of “intrigues, buried secrets and shocking revelations.”

The star-studded cast also includes Tirso Cruz III, Mylene Dizon, Elijah Canlas, Gabby Padilla, RK Bagatsing, Lotlot de Leon, Ketchup Eusebio, Cholo Barretto, Gio Alvarez and Ron Angeles.

The production and creatives are led by Bryan Diamante of Mentorque (same group behind the 2023 MMFF entry “Mallari”) as executive producer and Antoinette Jadaone of Project 8 Projects as producer. Reign de Guzman, Omar Sortijas and Catsi Catalan are on board as supervising producers, while Irene Villamor is the creative producer. Dan Villegas directs from the screenplay of Dodo Dayao.

Aga as Guilly.

“It’s overwhelming, but the pressure is on,” Diamante said during an interview at the recent grand party-themed launch of the film. “We’re just starting, and I’m telling you the nine other (MMFF) entries are really good, too, so we have to up our game. That’s why we’re also relentless with ‘Uninvited,’ because a lot of Filipino audiences have to watch this film.”

This means, they are eyeing both domestic and overseas screenings for the film when the MMFF opens on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

“I’m hoping that we could have simultaneous screenings worldwide on Dec. 25. We’re not only targeting the Philippine audiences but also the international audiences,” he said.

They are working anew with Warner Bros. as their film distributor.

Vilma Santos and Aga Muhlach share a light moment at the grand launch of their MMFF 2024 entry 'Uninvited.' The thriller is produced by Mentorque Productions with Project 8 Projects.

Despite targeting a wider cinema release for “Uninvited,” he acknowledged that one of the challenges would be the film’s rating. He said they’re hoping for an R-13 rating.

“We can’t say yet (about the target number of cinemas) because it’s going to be a challenge for me when it comes to the rating. I hope that we’re open also to this kind of film,” Diamante said, adding, “Actually, ang lalim ng pelikulang ito. Nakita niyo yung grandness (from the trailer), but it has a lot of things to say.”

As the trailer suggests, one of the sensitive topics it will explore is abuse of women.

Nadine Lustre as Nicole.

“Feeling ko ha, part of our culture that cannot advance is because we never tackle yung mga bagay na (tinatago and sensitive)... I was really happy, although it’s really a risk for all of us. Gusto ko matapang yung pelikula ito (We want this film to be brave),” he said.

The film originated from a concept by the Star for all Seasons herself, Vilma, which eventually grew into a full-fledged cinematic project. She proposed the idea for a narrative that would unfold within 24 hours.

Diamante said, “This movie, we never thought magkatotoo. Kami ni Ate Vi nung nag-uusap kami, she just wants to create a film, and ako naman gusto ko gumawa ng pelikula (wherein) ibibigay namin lahat. And then we were able to submit (to MMFF), sabi ko, try natin kasi andyan na yan eh. Let’s try to submit it. Sabi niya (Vilma), ayoko nga ng pressure, ‘di ba. Eh nung sinubmit namin, natanggap. So that’s what happened.”

In asking Vilma, who was vocal about not wanting to be pressured to participate in this year’s MMFF, to do “Uninvited,” Diamante said it was “Mallari” that gave him the confidence to do so.

“Pitch ng pitch ako sa kanya because of course, she’s done 200 films. When you present (things to her), even if she’s not saying it, (she would hint that) nagawa ko na yan. Kaya sabi ko talaga sa kanya, ‘Ma’am, just tell us what you want.’”

Meanwhile, the producer refrained from disclosing the production budget, but he hinted at the scale of the project. “Definitely, cast pa lang andun na tayo. I’m really fortunate that every organization, or company, or every person that we tapped to do this film, they all said yes. We’re very fortunate on that,” he said.

“Kung expensive, I think the Filipino audience deserves this type of caliber ng ganitong pelikula.”

Aga and Nadine were deliberate and first choices despite the risks the story posed. “It’s very sensitive, it can actually make or break their careers,” Diamante said. “Pero nung nagsama-sama sila, I was there at the shoot. Ibang klase.”

He shared an anecdote about Aga’s dedication to his role as the main antagonist in the film. “Sa set nga, si Sir Aga, nakikita ko nagsasalita mag-isa, tapos tumitingin sa akin, tumatawa, ‘Ano, siraulo tingin mo sa akin ano? Ganito ako ka-invested dito.’

“That’s the journey of the character. We never held back because if you hold back, the reality of what we wanted to show… I know that there are compromises, but we don’t compromise that. We really have to have that journey of the character,” he added.

On the technical side, Diamante revealed how they went all-out to ensure the film’s quality. “We made sure mabibigay namin lahat. Mapapansin mo there’s a difference in the look… It’s because we invested in the technical (aspects),” he explained.

“Actually, last year with ‘Mallari,’ Alexa 35 camera was first used in the country, so we’re using Alexa 35 now. We’re also using customized lens. Tumataginting din yung lente palang, pwede na pagawa ng pelikula (the cost itself can already finance an entire film). But that’s how invested we are.”

He believes that this level of investment is crucial in feeding the passion of Filipino creatives and talents.
