Ten people died after a landslide buried a house occupied by two families in Malapatan, Sarangani on Friday, July 10, as heavy rains triggered by Super Typhoon Inday and the enhanced southwest monsoon saturated the soil, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
Rodrigo Sosmeña, director of the OCD in Region 12, said the incident occured around 10:30 a.m. in Sitio Fandaw, Barangay Poblacion.
He said the landslide buried a house occupied by two families, and all 10 victims have been recovered from the debris.
The fatalities were identified by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Malapatan as Alejandro Maladian, Bina Binaton Maladian, Jordan Binaton Maladian, Weljay Maladian, Bonbon Cawsri, Therd Yaton Dawang, Prince Yaton Dawang, Save Yaton Dawang, Daniel Binaton Dawang, and Ricky Ben, who was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
"A landslide occured due to the effect of Typhoon Inday, which pulled the southwest monsoon. There was heavy rain fall that caused the saturation of soil," he said.
"Unfortunately, 10 individuals died," he added.
Aside from the landslide, flooding was also reported in several areas in Region 12, mostly in Sultan Kudarat, but no additional fatality was reported.
