Why are Low German and High German languages still called by that name

Trying to learn as much as I can.

As Dennis Bruns correctly stated, the differentiation is not about a “high language”, i.e. court or magisterial language, as opposed to a lower, vulgar form like is the case with Latin.

Additional confusion stems from the fact that in German the term “Hochdeutsch” is often used when speaking about “Standard German” or to give its correct name “Standardhochdeutsch”.

In English the term “High German” usually denotes what Germans call “Hochdeutsche Mundarten”, “High German dialectics”, which is the term for German variants spoken south of the “Uerdinger Linie”.

In this context the differentiation is indeed primarily about elevation, with Low German, often called “Flat German”, Plattdeutsch in German, being the language of the North German flatlands and High German being the language of everything that is not the flat plain in the North.

In France, it's all (PBA IMAGES)

Hey there sports fan,

From the looks of it, Team Philippines to the Paris Olympics will be a fairly big one. As of this missive, 20 athletes have already qualified to compete in the glamorous French capital next month with more still looking to book their tickets.

No one is making any predictions, but as Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio said, every athlete who competes in the Olympics dreams of winning the gold. Petecio, the first Filipino female boxer to finish on the podium in the Olympics, has taken some sort of an elder's role in Team Philippines and she hopes her "chill" approach to the Games will help her and her teammates ease the pressure in Paris.

Team Philippines, after all, is eyeing a very difficult target: Bettering the performance of Team Philippines during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. That delegation did not only end the country's search for an Olympic champion, it also brought home to silver medals and one bronze finish.

There are a lot of athletes who can figure prominently in the gold hunt: Pole vaulter EJ Obiena, the No. 2 in the world, is separated only by the diameter of a dinner plate from world record holder Mondo Duplantis. Gymnast Carlos Yulo is a world champion many times over. And perhaps the most probable source of glory: The Philippine boxing team carries probably the best credentials entering an Olympic staging. They will carry the flag for the Philippines in Paris, quite literally.

It's going to be an  interesting battle for Team Philippines, which will be well-equipped to go toe-to-toe with the world's best in France.

Also hoping to catch the last plane to Paris is Gilas Pilipinas, which will participate in a tough Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia. The national basketball team has kicked off its preparations for that tournament with "much-needed difficulty" and will fly to Turkiye to further polish their game.

Speaking of Olympians, here's a trivia question:  In what place did Elreen Ann Ando finish in the weightlifting competitions of the Tokyo Olympics? Check out the answer at the end of this email.

The PVL's Draft Combine allowed hopefuls to showcase their skills. (MARLO CUETO)

Meanwhile...

…The Premier Volleyball League set up a Draft Combine to prepare teams for the trailblazing PVL Rookie Draft on July 8. And the teams were impressed with how the camp ran as it allowed them to map out how they will proceed with their selctions. ZUS Coffee, which owns the No. 1 overall pick, has made it clear that it will go with La Salle product Thea Gagate and is now just drawing up plans for the rest of the selection process.

There are 47 rookies in all who signed up for the Draft. Some are familiar names from the collegiate scene. Some have come from afar to chase their dreams, even from beyond the country's borders

Check out our dispatches from the Combine here.

What we're up to next:

WE will track the plans of PVL teams as they prepare for the July 8 ROokie Draft and hopefully get a feel of how the selections will go, at least for the first round. We will also have more features on our Olympians. We will also be covering, remotely, Gilas Pilipinas as it shoots for an Olympic berth.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“My priority is the national team and I hope [whatever PVL team picks me] will be understanding of that.”

Ateneo’s 'Sintang Dalisay': A Pinoy twist on Shakespeare’s 'Romeo and Juliet'

A tribute to Dr. Ricardo G. Abad

Have you ever imagined Romeo and Juliet in a Filipino setting? Wonder no more because it’s happening in theaters this July 2024.

Over a decade since Sintang Dalisay’s first formal run in 2011, Tanghalang Ateneo will once again delight Filipino theater-goers with their classic Romeo and Juliet adaptation. In partnership with Areté, Sintang Dalisay 2024 will offer audiences a fresh take on the award-winning production, originally adapted and directed by the late Dr. Ricardo G. Abad. The play will be staged at Areté’s 840-seater Hyundai Hall beginning July 6, 2024.

“Ricardo Abad passed away late last year, midway through preparations for the restaging of Sintang Dalisay,” Guelan Varela-Luarca, co-director and playwright said in a press statement. “Today, we carry his legacy and his passion for the performing arts. This staging is our tribute to Ricky and a manifestation of all the triumphs and trials, and the Pure Love that has endured throughout all of its restagings.”

Since its first run in July 2011 for Tanghalang Ateneo’s 33rd season, the production has toured internationally in Belarus (2012), Taiwan (2014), Vietnam (2016), and Malaysia (2017) among other local and international reruns. This year’s staging will be the first full-length Filipino non-musical production to be staged at Hyundai Hall, and will mark the beginning of Tanghalang Ateneo’s 46th Season aptly themed "The Ricardo Abad Season." Sintang Dalisay follows the story of Rashiddin and Jamila, two lovers from the feuding  families of the Mustaphas and Kalimuddins. Set in an imaginary Muslim community, Rashiddin and  Jamila must navigate their love amidst a long-standing conflict between their families.

Sintang Dalisay will run from July 6 to 20, 2024, featuring afternoon shows (2 p.m.) on July 6-7, 12-14, and 18-20, 2024, and evening shows (7:30 p.m.) on July 6-7, 13-14, and 19-20, 2024. Tickets start at P850 and are available for purchase through Ticket2Me or Tanghalang Ateneo’s direct ticketing form.

Filipinos search for BINI over Taylor Swift, other celebs on YouTube

BY ROBERT REQUINTINA

AT A GLANCE

  • The popularity of the homegrown P-Pop girl group BINI soared in June, with Filipinos showing the most interest in the group on YouTube compared to other popular artists such as Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, according to data collected by Google Trends.

The Philippines is blooming, and Google has the data to prove it.

The popularity of the homegrown P-Pop girl group BINI soared in June, with Filipinos showing the most interest in the group on YouTube compared to other popular artists such as Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, according to data collected by Google Trends.

Throughout the entire month, the search term "BINI" was the most popular on YouTube in the Philippines. It ranked highest in the Calabarzon, Bicol, MIMAROPA, and Central Luzon regions, with an overall search interest score of around 80. Metro Manila came in fifth place with a search interest percentage of 78.

BINI also gained momentum around the world, being more searched than artists such as Sabrina Carpenter and Beyonce on YouTube for most of the month. Aside from the Philippines, the group was also more popular in the United Arab Emirates—around 700,000 Filipinos make up the country’s population, more than half of which are in Dubai alone.

The interest over time percentage refers to the dominance of a specific search term compared to others at a specified time and place.

This search term "BINI" dominated all other keywords in these areas, indicating the substantial volume of search data on Google at specific times and locations.

This trend follows the massive success and virality of BINI’s two recent singles “Pantropiko” and “Salamin Salamin,” which became major hits over the summer. The sheer popularity of the songs served as BINI’s real breakout moment around three years after their official debut, catapulting them into superstardom.
