Why are Southern Filipinos better than Northern Filipinos in terms of manners and behavior?

My Quora account is mainly focused on promoting and educating people about the pre-colonial period. Below are some of my articles and as well as some informative videos.

I would like to inform people that “nothing is set in stone” because we are constantly gathering information and learning about our history, somethings may change in the future, but for now the things that I publish are the things that we currently “know about.”

Based on what measure?… and how far "South" are we talking about?

  • When you say "Southern Filipinos" I'm assuming that you're referring to the "Visayans" instead of the "Mindanaoans".
  • There are "cultural norms" from each region of the country that may greatly differ from each other… "this doesn't mean that one is "objectively right" and the other is "objectively wrong".

The "Visayans" of central Philippines are considered to be more "jolly, straightforward, jokesters, outgoing, talkative and generally friendly towards strangers, the females also tend to display their "closeness" towards their male friends much more and this is generally considered "normal" to them, (nothing "sexual or anything")… They are generally "touchy-feely" which Western tourists may find to be "more appealing".

  • The warm smile of a Visayan lady from Central Philippines.

However this is not considered to be "normal" in Luzon… and the further north you go, the more "conservative, silent, aloof and serious" people tend to be. People also tend to keep their personal space more until they have "warmed up"… they may perceive Visayan "straightforwardness and humor" to be "rude and disrespectful" and their friendliness might also be perceived to be an "invasion of personal space". Females who show so much "closeness" to their male friends are also perceived to be $/vt$ in the north, and thus being very close to your male friends is considered to be "inappropriate". In turn, people from Luzon may also be perceived as "rude" by the Visayans.

  • I'm not generalizing but people in the north just tend to have that "unimpressed" look in their eyes.

And if we also go all the way down to the south of the country in the island of Mindanao, especially where the Muslims reside… the people may also be equally "appalled" by "Visayan manners", especially the "closeness" displayed between friends of the opposite sex. Just like in the northern parts of the country, the people also tend to be more "conservative, silent, aloof and serious".

Lastly, Manila being a "melting-pot" that is situated between the Visayas and the far north of the country tends to mix some aspects from both cultures… (We in Metro Manila may not be as "jolly" as the Visayans, but we are also not as "uptight" as those in the far north and also the far south of the country).

  • I would like to make it clear that my observations and assessments are mainly based on "generalizations".

In the end, these are just cultural differences within the country and no one is "objectively right or wrong"… by the way, kindly read the article made by Allan Daniel in the link below.

Chris Newsome knocked down the dagger trey that iced Gilas Pilipinas' upset of New Zealand(AUGUST DELA CRUZ)

Hey there sports fan,

It was one of those "Where were you when..." moments in sports.

The Philippines, long suffering from a string of defeats to Asia-Oceania powerhouse New Zealand, finally broke through in front of 16,666 screaming fans at Mall of Asia Arena late Thursday evening.

The Filipinos stunned the Kiwis, 93-89, behind a strong third quarter, a steely fourth quarter and one big triple from Chris Newsome.

Newsome's triple preserved huge performances from his teammates, notably Justin Brownlee, who had a game-high 26 points, and Kai Sotto, who punched in an all-around performance of 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks.

It was certainly a night to remember for basketball-loving Filipinos, and the win gives Gilas Pilipinas all the momentum it needs for Sunday's showdown against Fiba Asia lightweight Hong Kong.

Fans were able to tune in to the match on TV and on livestream, what with the UAAP going on a break to free up everyone's basketball calendar.

The last time we saw the UAAP, La Salle was safely tucked at the No. 1 spot while University of the Philippines locked up the No. 2 position. Both teams will have twice-to-beat protection heading into the Final Four.

UP will face the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, while La Salle's opponent is still unknown. University of the East is precariously standing at the fourth spot, but Adamson can force a playoff for the last semifinal berth with a win over Ateneo on Wednesday.

Seriously, where were you when Gilas Pilipinas finally beat the Tall Blacks?

Speaking of Gilas, who was named coach of the national youth basketball program recently?

Iris Tolenada has been a guiding light for her teamand for young volleyball players
(PVL IMAGES)

Meanwhile on Plus...

We don't talk a lot about Iris Tolenada when we have conversations about volleyball superstars. We should.

The University of the Philippines didn't run out of motivation when it faced University of the East in a game that had absolutely no bearing for the Fighting Maroons. No surprise there.

In Greek mythology, Thea (sometimes spelled Theia), is the goddess of light, sight and vision. ZUS Coffee, in the PVL, settled for the mortal version.

The UST Tigers are not reaching back for inspiration as they face a long Final Four climb. The Tigers are writing their own story.

What we're up to next:

We'll be reporting more on Gilas Pilipinas' victory over New Zealand as we look forward to the next Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers game against Hong Kong. When that's done, we will return to regular programming starting with the Adamson-Ateneo match on Wednesday, which University of the East will keenly observe. Of course, we'll have more volleyball features, so keep it here.

Number of the Week: 5

Number of games it took before the Philippines finally beat New Zealand in an official Fiba game.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“We haven't seen our best team yet and we've been able to beat No. 6 and No. 22.”

—Tim Cone, national team coach, on Gilas Pilipinas' victory over world No. 6 Latvia and world No. 22 New Zealand.

Davao Airport upgrades to high-speed internet for travelers

BY ANGELICA BALLESTEROS

Nearly 3.9 million travelers at the Davao International Airport are set to benefit from faster internet connectivity following the recent installation of a fiber internet connection at the said gateway.

As part of a memorandum of agreement with Davao airport, Converge ICT Solutions Inc. said that it recently installed a 1-gigabyte fiber internet connection at Davao airport—the country’s third busiest gateway.

Users are able to connect for two hours upon logging in, but Converge subscribers with a GoFiber account can have an additional six hours of free internet access for five devices.

The fiber connection can cover 49 access points spread throughout terminal buildings, check-in counters, and commercial areas and is estimated to serve some 12,500 users daily.

“As we near the last quarter of the year, we are forging ahead with our project of providing fiber broadband to the country’s local and international gateways. We are happy to report that Davao International Airport is now fiberized by Converge. Consider this as an early Christmas gift, as we expect an influx of travelers these last two months of the year,” said Converge Chief Executive Officer Dennis Anthony Uy.

“The facility we’ve laid down in the [airport] is capable of providing 1 Gbps of bandwidth for the passengers, but it can accommodate more. We’ve put in this extra capacity to suit the needs of the airport management and personnel, and of course the thousands of passengers that go through the airport,” he added.

Davao International Airport is the main airport serving Davao City and Davao Region in the Philippines. Serving as the main gateway to Mindanao, it is the busiest airport on the island and the third busiest in the Philippines in 2022.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, Converge said it was equipping the Philippines’ gateways with fiber-fast broadband, having finished improving connection at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the second quarter of this year.

At present, Converge said it continues to set its sights to connect other regional airports in the country.
