Alas Women too much for Aussies

Alas Pilipinas imposed its will for an emphatic 25-13, 25-15, 25-20 win over Australia to make it two in a row in the 2025 VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup at the Vinh Phuc Gymnasium in Vietnam Tuesday, July 1.

Coming off a four-set win over Sichuan of China, the Nationals dazzled anew as they put on a clinic from start to finish and denied the Australian their first win in the week-long meet.

Alas is currently at second place in Pool A with a 2-1 win-loss record, with the group standings and the quarterfinal pairings expected to change after the evening match between Vietnam (2-0) and Sichuan (1-1).

The Jia De Guzman-led squad will face Thailand’s Est Cola in the quarters.

Australia, for its part, might battle reigning champion and Russia-based squad Korabelka or Chinese Taipei.

As expected, Brooke Van Sickle powered the Nationals with her scoring prowess, while Vanie Gandler impressed with 11 points off eight attacks and three aces.

De Guzman also shone as she provided the plays that Gandler, MJ Phillips, Alleiah Malaluan, Amie Provido and Dell Palomata relied on. Justine Jazareno showed promise as well as a backup for seasoned libero Dawn Catindig.

Michelle Marquez Dee: The queen who got away from Miss Grand Philippines 2025

Published Jul 2, 2025 07:16 am
When the country’s fiercest glamazons descended on Okada Manila’s Golden Ballroom for the Miss Grand Philippines 2025 press presentation, the pageant world was abuzz with one burning question: where was Michelle Marquez Dee?       We confirmed that Miss Grand Philippines national director Arnold Vegafria had a very interesting pre-event chika with Michelle herself. Yes, our very own Miss Universe Philippines 2023. The hot tea was that Michelle was ready to join Miss Grand Philippines. According to insider whispers, ALV gave Michelle the nudge to join. And guess what? Michelle responded with keen interest.    ALV is doing his work because MGI president Nawat Itsaragrisil is said to have his eye on MMD. The controversial Thai pageant luminary is reported to like MMD's business value and her social media following. Suppose there’s any hope for the Philippines to pull off a back-to-back Miss Grand International win after CJ Opiaza’s crowning. In that case, Michelle Dee appears to be the country’s golden ticket, judging from Nawat's favorable reaction.
So, where was MMD?
A royal scheduling snafu got in the way of her potential grand entrance. Sources indicate that Michelle was informed the press presentation would be held on July 2, not July 1. Meanwhile, she was booked and busy on July 1, shooting a commercial. Up until the evening, ALV’s team reportedly kept the door open—literally—giving her until midnight to make it. But no MMD in sight.
Adding to the drama, Michelle posted a cryptic (and kinda poetic) Instagram story on July 1: “Time and destiny didn’t align for me today… but I believe one day, it will. #TrustTheProcess.”
For now, the stage belongs to the 29 official candidates - including pageant veterans Emma Tiglao, Nikki Buenafe, Michelle Arceo, Shannon Tampon, Anita Gomez, Francesca McLelland, and others. But the possibility of a wildcard entry? Well, let’s say we’re not ruling anything out. After all, this is Miss Grand, and plot twists are part of the show!

Good separation

Handsome Actor (HA) and Beautiful Woman (BW) called it quits.

When netizens noticed the closeness of Handsome Actor (HA) and Beautiful Woman (BW), they assumed the two were on their way to building a relationship. True enough, the two eventually ended up together.

The relationship was positively received given that the circumstances of HA and BW were unusual.

Social media indicated that HA and BW shared many things in common. Both loved engaging in activities that are healthy. They accepted each other’s pains and triumphs.

They had unique experiences growing up. Hence, both could understand their current personalities.

Although many wished the two would be each other’s forever, sadly the signs show they have broken up. No announcements were made. However, the lack of photos of HA and BW together on social media was enough for fans.

According to the grapevine, something was troubling the couple. Allegedly, HA had a foul mouth. Who bore the curses? BW.

Abuse, punishment, suppression, abuse, scream.

Abuse, punishment, suppression, abuse, scream.

Other than that, their inner circle maintained HA does not possess good traits. Consequently, they found him an enigma, that is, his pretty face does not give a hint of his unsavory personality.

‘To successfully create illusion, the first thing you need is trust, but to perfect an illusion, the false reality most appears as authentic as the one it hides. Careful attention must be paid to every detail. The slightest of imperfections can, like a pin to a balloon, burst the illusion . . . and the truth behind the illusion becomes revealed.’ ― Emily Thorne

Perfect un-pair

Recent observations led netizens to tease Good Boy (GB) and Talented Personality (TP).

GB and TP are aware of their fan’s playfulness and subsequently expressed praise towards each other.

However, the two are focused on their individual responsibilities.

TP, as the public knows, had just ended her relationship with Former Lover (FL).

Fans and friends believed the two were the perfect match but time proved they were wrong.

One morning, the world woke up with news that TP and FL were over and done. The two eventually moved on, finding ways to develop their craft further. Reconciliation was no longer possible.

It was then that netizens started shipping GB and TP. Romance between the two is not possible, however. TP has been keeping a secret. She has a Constant Date (CD), a non-showbiz businessman.

Even if TP was seen in an awkward situation whereby FL was dragged, she and CD were getting to know each other already.

Incidentally, CD was formerly in a relationship with a Wealthy Actress (WA), who is currently dating another non-showbiz personality.

Matching GB with TP is just an illusion. Though they would make a beautiful couple, their togetherness is just a dream. GB’s fans will have to do better finding the right partner for him.

Uplifting the GIDAs: Toward inclusive national progress

By Manila Bulletin

Published Jul 1, 2025 12:05 am

The recent distribution of SIM cards — spearheaded by the Department of Information and Communication Technology in partnership with Globe Telecoms — to students of Kalawakan Elementary School in Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan, is more than a gesture of connectivity. It is a strong statement of commitment to bridge the digital divide in the Philippines’ geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs). At the same site, Kalawakan Proper, Governor Daniel Fernando also led the planting of over 1,000 tree seedlings to mark Arbor Day on June 25, reaffirming the deep link between environmental stewardship and inclusive development.

These two acts — providing students with access to digital tools and nurturing the environment — underscore a larger narrative: that true national progress cannot be achieved without uplifting the lives of our most remote and underserved communities. For the Philippines to realize the vision set out in Ambisyon 2040 — “matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay,” or “a strongly rooted, comfortable, and secure life for all Filipinos” — GIDAs must be brought firmly into the fold of inclusive growth.

Across the archipelago, GIDAs face a confluence of challenges: limited access to quality education and health services, unreliable infrastructure, weak internet connectivity, and minimal economic opportunities. Yet they are home to some of the most resilient Filipinos—communities often rich in culture, natural resources, and social solidarity. These areas must not be left behind.

The effort in Kalawakan, though modest in scope, presents a compelling case for how multisectoral collaboration — between local government, education stakeholders, and national agencies — can yield tangible progress. The SIM cards can serve as lifelines to knowledge, communication, and opportunity, especially in remote schools that remain outside the digital mainstream. Tree-planting initiatives, meanwhile, protect the natural ecosystems on which many GIDA communities rely, while instilling environmental values in the next generation.

To build on this momentum, several key priorities should be pursued.

First: Digital inclusion through infrastructure and training. Internet connectivity is no longer a luxury — it is a prerequisite for participation in modern life. Expanding broadband networks to cover far-flung barangays must be matched with digital literacy programs for both students and teachers.

Second: Improved transportation and mobility. Roads, bridges, and transport services are essential to link GIDA communities to markets, schools, and hospitals. Continued investment in infrastructure — especially under the “Build Better More” program—should prioritize last-mile connectivity.

Third: Education and teacher support. Special incentives for teachers assigned to GIDAs, coupled with mobile or modular learning innovations, can ensure that no child is deprived of learning simply due to geography.

Fourth: Local economic development. Livelihood programs tailored to the resources and potential of each area — such as agri-forestry, eco-tourism, and sustainable farming — can empower GIDA residents and prevent rural depopulation.

Fifth: Climate resilience and environmental protection. Arbor Day efforts like the one in Kalawakan are critical. Reforestation, watershed management, and community-led conservation must be institutionalized to combat climate risks that disproportionately affect remote communities.

Bridging the gaps in our geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas is not only a matter of equity; it is a matter of national interest. A truly resilient and prosperous Philippines depends on the full participation of all its citizens — urban and rural, central and remote. GIDA upliftment is not peripheral to Ambisyon 2040; it is central to its success.

Let the seeds planted in Kalawakan grow not only into trees but into enduring symbols of inclusive progress.

Fancied Creamline and Cignal put their unbeaten records on the line when they clash on Tuesday, July 1, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour at the Filoil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City.

Match is set at 6:30 p.m. as the league returns to the National Capital Region after weekend stops in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, and Batangas City.

The winner of the Creamline-Cignal showdown will seize the solo lead in Pool B, with both teams eyeing a third straight victory in as many outings.

Kicking off the day’s action is the 4 p.m. matchup between PLDT and Farm Fresh—two teams looking to start strong in Pool A.

Both Creamline and Cignal are hoping that the weeklong break has recharged them, following dominant performances in Vigan where they ruled their respective assignments against Akari and Capital1.

As expected, the Cool Smashers are showcasing their trademark depth led by the lethal trio of Michele Gumabao, Alyssa Valdez, and Jema Galanza, who combined for 46 points in their four-set win over the Akari Chargers.

New recruit Sheena Toring, a former National University standout, is also out to prove her worth after scoring 10 points in the same match.

Cignal, meanwhile, is unfazed—having yet to drop a set in the tournament.

The HD Spikers are banking on their own powerhouse trio of Erika Santos, Roselyn Doria, and Ishie Lalongisip, with additional firepower from Heather Guino-o, Tin Tiamzon and Gel Cayuna.

Meanwhile, PLDT and Farm Fresh aim to make a strong impression in Pool A.
Kim Fajardo, Dell Palomata, and Majoy Baron are expected to lead the High Speed Hitters while the Foxies lean on the veteran presence of Rachel Daquis, along with Trisha Tubu and Caitlyn Viray.

21 Filipino 'trafficking victims' repatriated from Myanmar — BI

Twenty-one human trafficking victims have returned to the Philippines after being “forced to work as scammers” in Myanmar, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Monday, June 30. BI Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado said the 21 Filipinos were lured by false promises, stripped of their dignity, and forced to work under inhumane conditions. Read more

„Hitzeglocke“ über Europa: Nächster Temperatur-Rekord fällt – „beispiellose“ Lage in Urlauber-Land

Hitze in Europa. Besonders in Urlauber-Ländern herrscht schon Alarmstimmung.

Update vom 30.

Erstmeldung vom 30. Juni: Hitze-Alarm in Europa.

Extreme Hitze trifft Europa: „Hitzeglocke“ verwandelt Kontinent in Glut-Ofen

Hitze-Alarm in Europa: Spanien meldet Temperatur-Rekord

„Beispiellose“ Hitze-Lage in Frankreich – Italien schlägt Alarm

(afp)

Never rely too much on anyone in this world

Never rely too much on anyone in this world — because even your own shadow can leave you when you’re in darkness. And your own shadow vanishes when in the dark. This says to us that we have to come to stand alone, to learn how to be strong for ourselves. There is nothing wrong with loving and trusting and depending on others, but don’t forget to build a strong relationship with yourself. In the end, the first person you owe it to is yourself, because the only person who will be with you at every turn, through bright lights and dark shadows, is you. Keep going my love, stay rooted, trust the journey is yours.

From beauty queen to recording artist: Michelle Dee drops Pride-themed music video for Reyna

Charmie Joy Pagulong - The Philippine Star

From the world of pageantry to now music, Michelle Dee admits that she has always imagined herself recording a song someday. After all, she was active in school theater and a member of a Glee Club when she was in high school.

As an ode to the LGBTQIA+ community, Miss Universe Philippines 2023 and Sparkle artist Michelle Dee has just dropped a Pride version of the music video for her debut single Reyna, in celebration of Pride Month this June.

The track, a collaborative project between ABS-CBN Music and GMA, was released last March under Star Music.

She rendered a vibrant, surprise performance of the song during the music video launch that took place recently at the Dolphy Theatre in ABS-CBN Studios.

“When we came together to create a song, our objective was really, really straight. It’s clear. This is for every single queen — whether you’re a woman, man, or anything in between. It’s for you to find your strength, to be who you are, and this is just a product of so many people being able to relate to that,” she shared at a mediacon that followed.

Michelle talked about how close the LGBTQIA+ community is to her heart. As she elaborated, “I only came out, I think, around 2023 after I won Miss Universe Philippines. But even before then, I was a loud and proud ally of the LGBT community. I really credit my mom (Melanie Marquez), because ganun ako mag-isip. Bata pa lang ako, she’s so vocal about her love for the gay community, for the whole community.”

In a magazine interview, she identified herself as bisexual.

A scene from the Pride version music video for her debut single Reyna as part of the Pride Month celebration. The track is a collaborative project between ABS-CBN Music and GMA.

“But if you remember, I was the most-bashed Miss Universe Philippines queen. And it was because they were trying to take that against me — my identity against me. And when I came out, I finally mustered up the strength to come out because I didn’t want to come out in competition.”

It could be recalled that the beauty queen’s pageant advocacy was about autism awareness and not the LGBTQIA+ community. “And I just knew, knowing the pageant community, that if I came out in competition, everything else that I was fighting for might have been clouded. But everything happens for a reason because when I came out after, grabe talaga yung reception and how it really turned the table for me — my confidence and the kind of love I received through the community.”

Resembling a Barbie doll, Michelle’s new music video conveyed the sentiments of the ditty, melded with her sparkling performance and a colorful display of costumes. Her mom appeared in the video, as well as her pet dog — before she got bitten in the face.

“Nakakaawa kasi bina-bash na siya ng maraming tao. Hindi naman niya sinasadya,” she commented, referring to her pet.

Nonetheless, Michelle described her experience filming the music video as something “fun, light and empowering.”

“And it just means a lot. And hopefully, it resonates with a lot of people. It’s really meant to celebrate the song and all of it,” she added.

“It such an amazing time to celebrate your pride and to celebrate who you are. And it’s more than just being out. It’s about loving your own and everybody around you.”

From the world of pageantry to music, the other side of Michelle as a recording artist was something she had imagined way back. She was active in school theater and a member of a Glee Club when she was a freshman in high school.

Michelle renders a vibrant, surprise performance of the song during the music video launch at the Dolphy Theatre in ABS-CBN Studios.

“It’s just that na-highlight lang talaga yung pagiging adrenaline junkie ko and being part of a varsity. And of course, when I started my career, I started with acting and of course (pageants). You’re not fighting for yourself in your career — you’re fighting for the country. It’s not a selfish battle, it’s a battle for the country.”

After her Miss Universe stint, she felt like “it was the right time to finally expose a side of me that I’ve been itching to do,” which is performing music.

So can fans expect more songs from Michelle after Reyna? “Actually, hindi po, ito lang po ang only kanta ko. Charot!” she quipped. “Of course, marami pa pong aabangan.”

She is actually prepping for the launch of her full album. “It’s just a matter of releasing it at the right time. Marami pa po kayong aabangan. A lot of genres. I’m actually very, very excited for songs that we’re going to release — some anthemic, also taking inspiration from a lot of my idols that matter to me. Of course, this is dedicated especially to all of you, to everyone who helped me on my journey. Tuloy-tuloy po ‘yan ‘cause music is forever.”

Queried about her thoughts on the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE) bill, she said, “It starts the right conversations, even if it doesn’t get passed now. I believe that eventually, when the political landscape is better or if it’s more accepting, then who knows? But it’s important because it voices out what we need — what is important for us. It acknowledges every single person that doesn’t feel heard and what they feel like they deserve as well.

“And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with acknowledging every sector. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with starting that conversation and asking yourself, ‘Why can’t we, or why shouldn’t we?’ You have to see it from both ends of the spectrum, both sides of the coin. But at the end of the day, naniniwala naman ako na we’ll get there.”

SOME HARD FACTS ABOUT THE WORKPLACE

1. Your boss is not your friend. Regardless of how close you both are, learn to set PROFESSIONAL boundaries.

2. Walls have ears. Be careful who you confide in at work. A listening ear could also be a flippant mouth.

3. Your employer is now concerned about RESULTS. How you get the JOB done is up to you. No excuses.

4. There is always that one person/ group of persons feeding the boss with happenings in the office. Some employees brief go beyond the official ( except in work cultures where such act is expressly frowned upon). Be guided.

5. When you get withdrawn from PROJECTS or someone is asked to understudy you or you get demoted without cogent reason(s), that may be a cue you'd soon be shown the exit door.

6. As much as you can, keep your private life away from COLLEAGUES. You might be under INVESTIGATION for achieving some personal great feat without you even knowing.

7. Somebody your colleagues may not even like you, it could be the way you LOOK, DRESS, SPEAK, your capabilities, accomplishments at work, your aura or for some weird reasons and that is fine. Everybody cannot like you, so accept that.

8. Pay attention to body language, tone, pitch and pace of voice from your team members, colleagues or your boss. They may provide important cues to what isn't expressly said. Studies have shown that emotions, likes and dislikes are communicated via 38% para- verbal and 55% non verbal. Only 7% are communicated via verbal communication.

9. There will always be that " exceptional colleague" who gets the job done, gets the recognition and praises. Don't let that feeling of DISDAIN or inadequacy set in. See what that person is doing differently, how they do it and learn. You'll become a better person. Be open to LEARNING.

10. While the workplace should foster POSITIVE VALUABLE RELATIONSHIPS, your primary aim is to get the job done and go home. Don't forget that.
