Hey there sports fan, Before we get to the PVL, let's discuss for a few moments a brewing and urgent problem with the national pool. Last week, I mentioned that Chery Tiggo kept standouts Eya Laure and Jennifer Nierva from practicing with Alas Pilipinas, the country's women's volleyball national team.  Talks were held to clarify certain "rules" and the hanging sanction that teams face if they withhold players from the national program. That sanction will end up toothless if it is applied to PVL clubs only. The Alas Pilipinas pool includes talents like Angel Canino, Alyssa Solomon, Bella Belen, Aira Panique and Casiey Dongallo. These are big-time young talents who belong to a more powerful volleyball stakeholder, the UAAP. And unless the national federation applies the same sanction to UAAP schools, the program is always going to suffer the age-old problems of incomplete attendance during training sessions. Already, Canino reportedly left the program to return to La Salle for its UAAP preparations. Meanwhile, the PVL has already started and notable imports have began flexing their muscles right on the first day. Elena Samoilenko provided a highlight show of scoring prowess as PLDT stunned Creamline while Kath Bell rang loudly for Chery Tiggo. Newcomer Meegan Hart (yes, there's an extra "e" in her name) provided Nxled with reason to hope for a better performance. There's other reasons to be excited. Injured players have returned, for one. Also, The PVL has said that instituting a Rookie Draft will lead to more competitive matches and that's something we will keep track of. So far, the top rookies haven't seen action either because they are still working their way into the rotation or because of national team commitments  But some newbies have managed to impress. Still everyone, including the league, is looking forward to seeing how these rookies will impact their squads. By the way, Alyssa Valdez may have missed Creamline's opening game in the Reinforced Conference, but that doesn't mean she's been inactive. She held a clinic recently and talked about opening opportunities and making a return to the national team.

We will also have people on the ground for the PVL Reinforced Conference and we wil also continue to get updates on the teams' preparations for the PBA Governors' Cup, which will kick off the league's 49th season. Number of the Week: 90 Minimum number of boats that will be used in the Paris Olympics' opening ceremony, where instead of the traditional walk-in of delegations, athletes will get to parade through the Seine river.

Reserved and silent person. I hold personal opinions but rarely express them extensively.

Hate confrontations.

I love sports, travelling and living in Germany. Hoping to write more on these topics!

Speaking for myself.

I am Indian and have grown up eating a variety of food with a higher threshold of spice. German food, on the other hand, is delicately flavoured with many ingredients in a lot of dishes retaining their natural taste. Having said that, I love the food in Germany, especially lunch at the Mensa (university or office cafeteria). Some of my personal favourites:

1. Schweinshaxe

Also known as Eisbein in other parts of Germany, the roasted pork knuckle with Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) and potatoes is irresistible. Combine that with a Maß of Weißbier (1 l of beer) and you have a heavenly Bavarian combination.

2. Schnitzel

Although common throughout the world, the ones I have eaten in Germany top the list. A plate of Schnitzel and a side of Pommes (fries) or vegetables in a cream sauce makes for a wholesome lunch.

3. Thüringer Bratwurst

Staying in the capital of Thuringia, I just cannot leave this out.

Q: What’s better than a sausage grilled over coal with bread and a topping of mustard sauce?

Ans: A sausage grilled over coal with bread and a topping of mustard sauce, for just 2 €.

4. Mett / Gehacktes

Who thought uncooked meat would taste so good? A helping of minced pork on top of a bun with onions will help you socialise with fellow Germans in ways even alcohol cannot! Also known colloquially as “Bauernmarmalade”, or “farmer’s jam”.

5. Rostbrätel

Another Thuringian dish! It is basically a pork neck cutlet grilled for a few hours over charcoal and garnished with caramelised onions and a side of vegetables. Of course, a local beer completes the set.

And since Christmas is around the corner, honourable mention to the Lebkuchen and the Spekulatius biscuits, along with Glühwein (though not a dish).

Heavy rain from LPA floods parts of Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY – Heavy rain from a low-pressure area flooded Albuera, Matag-ob, Palompon, Isabel, Merida, Baybay City, and Ormoc City in Leyte on Wednesday, July 17.

Waist-deep flood rendered the Isabel-Palompon Road impassable to all kinds of vehicles from 4 to 10 p.m., particularly in Barangays Rizal, Taberna, and Tabunok in Palompon.

Palompon Mayor Ramon Oñate said that all roads are now passable with no casualty reported.

“We are waiting for the results of the crops assessment and so far only one hanging bridge in Barangay Cangmoya was swept by floods,” he said.

Isabel Mayor Edgardo Cordeño said that flood has subsided in their municipality as of Thursday morning, July 18.

He added that they will hold a meeting on Thursday morning to assess the damage caused by the flood. 

In Matag-ob, Mayor Bernandino Tacoy said that the water level in Barangay Riverside irrigation reached critical level on Wendesday night.

Residents of Barangay Masaba evacuated to the town evacuation center.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Office reported that the water level in the main river is decreasing but it remains on the red (evacuation) level on Thursday morning.

“According to residents in Barangay Riverside, the water level overflowed around 11 p.m., causing minor flooding in some houses. Everyone is still urged to remain cautious, as there is a possibility that floodwaters could rise or landslides could occur,” the MDRRMO said.

Eastern Samar, Samar, Southern Leyte, and Southern Leyte is under a yellow rainfall warning as of 8 a.m. Thursday due to heavy rain from the LPA.
