Azi Acosta trades sexy roles for mainstream projects

VMX star Azi Acosta is taking her career in a different direction.

The 22-year-old actress has announced that she is leaving sexy films behind as she pursues more wholesome, mainstream roles.

Along with the change comes a new management team.

Acosta has left longtime manager and discoverer Jojo Veloso and is now under talent agency 12Stones Atelier, headed by Rhina Montemayor.

Her new management said the move is part of efforts to broaden her career beyond the genre that first made her popular.

Acosta became one of VMX's most familiar faces through films such as "Pamasahe," "Sex Games," and "Sugar Baby."

While she was known for daring roles, some filmmakers believed she could do much more.

In 2023, she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the FACINE Filipino International Cine Festival for her performance in "Erotica Manila," earning recognition for her acting as well as her screen presence.

She has not appeared in a VMX project for almost a year. During that time, she stepped away from acting and helped run her family's café in Tanay, Rizal.

Now back in show business, Acosta said she no longer accepts roles that require nudity or sexually explicit scenes. Instead, she wants to focus on projects that showcase her acting.

Her first project under her new management is GMA-7's action-drama series "The Master Cutter."

Why didn’t Germany choose the beautiful song "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" as national anthem when they got reunited? Instead, they stuck to the fascist national anthem they have today.

Oh, you sweet summer child. Do you even know what the Deuteschlandlied sings about?

Of unification of Germany

German national anthem was an aspirational song to unify all Germans under one banner. If you know the lyrics you’ll notice it mentions four places that limit Germany: Maas, Memel, Etsch and (und) Belt. These are four rivers, none of which are in Germany today - Maas is Meuse, in the Netherlands, Memmel is in Lithuania, Etsch in south Tyrol and Belt in the Netherlands. Germany is a bit smaller than in the song, but the German ethnic boundary reasonably approached all four at the time, so the song is not even calling fror conquest or anything like that. Just that all Germans would live in one Germany, rather than several dozen as it was the case in 1841.

Besides, only the last stanza is the official anthem, about justice and freedom for the German fatherland. That’s really not controversial and certainly not worse than the French who would water their fields with the blood of the impure.

As for Ausferstanden aus Ruinen, the song itself is nice but it sounds like a soundtrack to Lassie to me. It has good parts sure, but the beginning is unforgettable in a truly bad way. I just automatically see Lassie rise her head and run around whenever I hear it.

Why is Low German considered a part of the German language family if it's so different from High German?

Despite its name, a Low German speaker shares more foundational sound patterns with an English or Dutch speaker than with someone speaking Standard High German.

To understand the gap between the two, one must look at the High German Consonant Shift. Between the 3rd and 8th centuries, a massive phonetic change swept through the southern and central parts of the Germanic-speaking world. In these mountainous "high" regions, hard consonants softened or shifted. A "t" sound shifted to an "s" or "z" sound, turning the word water into Wasser. A "p" became a "pf" or "f", turning Appel into Apfel, and a "k" shifted into a "ch", changing maken (to make) into machen.

The northern, low-lying coastal areas never adopted this shift. Because the people there kept the older consonants, their speech remained closely aligned with the Anglo-Frisian and Franconian languages that eventually became English and Dutch. Strictly speaking from a linguistic standpoint, Low German (Plattdeutsch) and High German are distinct branches of the West Germanic language tree.

However, before the era of modern borders and standardized education, Western Europe existed as a vast dialect continuum. A traveler walking from the Alps to the North Sea would notice local speech changing slightly from village to village. Neighbors could always understand each other, even if people at opposite ends of the trade routes could not communicate at all.

The reason Low German is categorized under the "German" umbrella today comes down to a cultural and political shift. During the Middle Ages, Low German was the powerful, international prestige language of the Hanseatic League, dominating trade across the Baltic. But in the 16th century, Martin Luther translated the Bible using Central and High German dialects. As the printing press distributed this text far and wide, Standard High German emerged as the dominant written language across the fractured states of the Holy Roman Empire.

When Germany eventually unified into a single nation-state in the 19th century, Standard High German was entrenched as the language of government, education, and media. Over time, Low German was administratively and socially demoted from a distinct regional language into a mere "dialect" of the German nation, despite its unique linguistic origins.

WHEN BOREDOM STRIKES

Boredom is your brain's way of asking for a new goal. Instead of doing nothing, try a quick, fun activity. You can step outside for a fast walk, try a new DIY craft, or read up on a topic you find interesting.

"When boredom strikes" is a phrase that describes the sudden onset of restlessness, lethargy, or the uncomfortable sensation of being unable to engage in a satisfying activity. It often occurs when you have pent-up energy but no clear direction for it, or when your current environment fails to stimulate your mind.

For example, you may want to consider trying some new hobbies or other new diversional activities. Joining a club can be a good way to thwart your boredom. Reading clubs, hobby groups, or exercise groups are all great places to start.

While being a columnist of "Tinig ng Bayan" (published in Abra) during the 1980s, I remember our Taiwanese coordinator Cristina Lising-Geronga, who expressed herself in innumerable write ups about the topic loneliness. Sure, "Tinig ng Bayan" has been a publication for Filipinos abroad. Loneliness, borne by Filipinos living abroad while missing their families in the Philippines, became a very "normal" expression.

During that time, my Philippine mentor, the late Monsignor Professor Dr. Dr. Hermogenes E. Bacareza, Chaplain of the Philippine Community in Berlin, started together with me publishing "Ang Mabuhay". Believe me, "loneliness" became a main topic in many write-ups.

The feeling that nothing catches your interest, that everything's dull and flat, sums up the state of boredom. Too much time on your hands can result in boredom, and so can the tediousness of doing the same thing over and over again, like a dreary task at a job. So as soon as these needs are not being met in any area of life, boredom can set in and cause tiredness, drowsiness, laziness.

Nowadays, loneliness and boredom seem to be the splitting image of each other - so to speak, being as like two peas in a pod. While browsing in social networks like Facebook, one can find more and more comments as in "When Boredom Strikes" or so. Boredom, ending up in loneliness - or vice versus?

How come that loneliness and/or boredom are still a general topic in our society today's society?

Loneliness has been called one of the main diseases even during the last century. It really doesn't strike not only the Filipinos abroad and their loved ones back home. Too often loneliness is being followed by alcoholism, drug abuse and even suicide. Yes, loneliness becomes a modern day plague.  I observed several people trying to surround themselves with so-called "friends" only to find that such relationships are often shallow and unsatisfying.

Loneliness can be painful but being lonely or alone at that is not always a bad thing. Ask yourself, how do  you use your time, if you are really alone? Do you simply let the time pass without doing anything  at all? Why not use such time productively? There are many worthwhile activities to engage in, even if you are alone, such as reading, writing, listening to good (light) music, playing an (forgotten?) instrument, gardening... .

Reading the bible can be also very particularly beneficial.  The Word of God is "alive and exerts power" and can take our minds off ourselves.

To break the cycle of loneliness, one must be a giver. Let's keep an eye, not only and always on our personal interests but also on the interests of others. Look around and watch out who needs help, or who needs a real friend or good listener. Once you have spotted such a person, act! Thus, in order to have friends, you must act like a friend. Luke 6:38 says, "Give to others, and God will give to you!" Besides, "There is more happiness (and less loneliness) in giving than receiving", says Acts 20:35.

Bela Padilla's 'Blood vs. Duty' exit raises fresh questions after weeks of speculation

Bela Padilla's departure from "Blood vs. Duty" has become official, but for many viewers, the biggest question isn't how her character died. It's whether her exit has anything to do with the controversy that has followed the actress for weeks.

Padilla's character, Agent Lara Angeles, met her end in the latest episode after being fatally shot by Felix, played by Baron Geisler. The dramatic scene also marked the actress' final appearance in the action series, bringing one of its major story arcs to a close.

On its own, the exit could easily be seen as a creative decision. But it comes after weeks of online speculation fueled by claims that Padilla had allegedly become difficult to work with during production.

The rumors first surfaced in May after entertainment vlogger Ogie Diaz, citing an unnamed source, claimed there had been concerns behind the scenes about the actress' conduct on set. The allegations quickly spread across social media, prompting debate among fans and entertainment observers.

Neither Padilla nor the show's producers publicly confirmed the claims, and no evidence has emerged to substantiate the allegations.

It is as such that her character's sudden exit has once again become a talking point online, with some netizens wondering whether the two developments are connected.

The production, however, appears to be sending a different message.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Search, rescue, and retrieval operations are underway in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur, following a landslide early Friday, according to the police.

The Lanao del Sur police said the incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. in Barangay Ngingir, with five persons killed, two injured, and six remain missing after they were trapped beneath the rubble.

Two of the missing are surnamed Abdulrashid, two carry the family name Ali, and the other two are Arab and Abdulmajid.

Police said the responders arrived on foot at the landslide scene at 6 a.m. as the roads leading to the area were impassable to vehicles.

“Responders secured the incident site and conducted manual excavation and mechanical digging to extricate the victims trapped beneath the debris,” it said in its report.

Initial investigation disclosed that the landslide was caused by continuous heavy rainfall, resulting in the collapse of a large volume of soil that instantly buried the victims residing in the vicinity.

The prolonged heavy rainfall was due to the southwest monsoon or ‘’habagat’’ enhanced by typhoon Inday.

Rescuers include personnel from the Calanogas Municipal Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the local government unit, barangay officials, and volunteers. (PNA)
