Why didn’t Germany choose the beautiful song "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" as national anthem when they got reunited? Instead, they stuck to the fascist national anthem they have today.

Oh, you sweet summer child. Do you even know what the Deuteschlandlied sings about?

Of unification of Germany

German national anthem was an aspirational song to unify all Germans under one banner. If you know the lyrics you’ll notice it mentions four places that limit Germany: Maas, Memel, Etsch and (und) Belt. These are four rivers, none of which are in Germany today - Maas is Meuse, in the Netherlands, Memmel is in Lithuania, Etsch in south Tyrol and Belt in the Netherlands. Germany is a bit smaller than in the song, but the German ethnic boundary reasonably approached all four at the time, so the song is not even calling fror conquest or anything like that. Just that all Germans would live in one Germany, rather than several dozen as it was the case in 1841.

Besides, only the last stanza is the official anthem, about justice and freedom for the German fatherland. That’s really not controversial and certainly not worse than the French who would water their fields with the blood of the impure.

As for Ausferstanden aus Ruinen, the song itself is nice but it sounds like a soundtrack to Lassie to me. It has good parts sure, but the beginning is unforgettable in a truly bad way. I just automatically see Lassie rise her head and run around whenever I hear it.
