BUTUAN CITY – Police seized more than 18,000 board feet of illegally-cut lauan, yakal, and tangili lumber valued at P810,000 during an anti-illegal logging operation in Barangay Pakwan, Lanuza, Surigao del Sur Friday.

Police Lt. Col. Jennifer S. Ometer, Police Regional Office-13 Public Information Office chief, said two suspected illegal loggers were arrested in the operation.

“The 39-year-old and 33-year-old suspects are now under investigation while charges are being readied by our operating police units on the ground,” Ometer said.

Also recovered was a blue Rusi chariot used in transporting the illegally-cut forest products.

“Our ground troops with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources are investigating the apprehended individuals and illegally-cut forest products,”  Ometer said.

PRO-13 Director Police Brig. Gen. Rolindo M. Suguilon commended the operating units and DENR for their achievement.

“We will continue to strengthen our operations, together with our partner agencies, against illegal logging and other activities that threaten our forests and natural resources,” Suguilon said. “We will also ensure that those involved in the illegal exploitation of our forests are held accountable under the law.”

The confiscated lumber is under the custody of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur.

The suspects are detained at the Lanuza police station and face charges for violating Presidential Decree No. 705, the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines.

Phivolcs warns of another possible Kanlaon eruption

Oct 10 eruption was its 5th explosive volcanic activity in 2026

Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, which means "increased unrest."

Phivolcs is still assessing the volcano's overall condition and the extent of the hazards before deciding whether to raise its alert level.

Director Teresito Bacolcol also said the recent volcanic activities at Kanlaon, Mayon, and Taal volcanoes were not connected, despite occurring within days of one another.

Kanlaon Volcano’s eruption on Oct. 10 was its fifth explosive event this year, and another eruption remains possible, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned on Sunday, Oct. 11.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said the volcano remains under Alert Level 2, which means “increased unrest.”

“The possibility [of another eruption] is always there kasi nasa Alert Level 2 pa rin ang Kanlaon volcano. So it can go both ways. Pwede mag-lower yung parameters na mino-monitor natin or pwede rin mag-escalate (The possibility of another eruption is always there because Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2. So it can go both ways. The parameters being monitored could decrease, or activity could escalate),” Bacolcol said in a DZBB interview.

The moderately explosive eruption on Saturday noon was followed by ash emissions from 12:49 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., lasting two hours and 41 minutes, while at least two shorter ash emissions were recorded early Sunday morning.

“Nangyari ito dahil after the eruption, patuloy pa rin, kahit tapos na ang initial explosion natin, may gas pa rin at volcanic materials na lumalabas through the vent (This happened because even after the initial explosion ended, gases and volcanic materials continued to escape through the vent),” Bacolcol said.

He said ashfall and a pungent, sulfurous smell were reported in parts of Don Salvador Benedicto, La Carlota City, and San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.

Bacolcol said Phivolcs continues to monitor the direction of the ash emissions to determine which areas could be affected.

Meanwhile, he said the latest eruption would not automatically prompt an increase in the alert level, as authorities are assessing the volcano’s overall condition and the extent of the hazards.

“For now, hindi naman natin itataas ang alert level. Tinitingnan natin yung kabuuan. We're still assessing kung kailangan ba ito. Again, hindi naman automatic na itataas dahil nagkaroon tayo ng explosive eruption yesterday. Ang basis natin ay kung may escalation sa volcanic activity at kung gaano kalawak ang hazards (For now, we will not raise the alert level. We are looking at the overall situation and still assessing whether this is necessary. The alert level will not automatically be raised because an explosive eruption occurred yesterday. The basis is whether volcanic activity is escalating and how extensive the hazards are),” Bacolcol explained.

However, he reiterated that people must stay out of Kanlaon’s four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ), where an eruption could occur at any time, even at Alert Level 0, which indicates a normal state.

“Dapat talaga natin i-emphasize na dapat walang tao inside the four-kilometer permanent danger zone kasi it [an eruption] can happen anytime (We must emphasize that no one should be inside the four-kilometer permanent danger zone because an eruption can happen at any time),” he said.

Meanwhile, Bacolcol said the recent volcanic activities at Kanlaon, Mayon, and Taal volcanoes were not connected, despite occurring within days of one another.

Taal Volcano recorded a minor phreatomagmatic eruption on Oct. 8, while Mayon Volcano had another episode of strombolian activity early Sunday.

Bacolcol said Mayon’s strombolian activity, which involves short bursts of lava that typically last less than two minutes, has occurred intermittently since Jan. 6, when its effusive eruption began.

The latest episode followed the volcano’s previous recorded activity on Oct. 7.

“Each volcano has its own magma system at may sarili silang processes sa ilalim. So yung tatlong bulkan natin na nabanggit pare-pareho silang may volcanic unrest kaya pwede silang magkaroon ng eruption na magkalapit yung timing. Pero hindi ibig sabihin na yung activity ng isa nagti-trigger ng activity pa sa isang bulkan (Each volcano has its own magma system and processes underground. All three volcanoes are experiencing volcanic unrest, so their eruptions may occur close together in time. But this does not mean that activity in one volcano triggers activity in another),” Bacolcol said.

Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, while Taal Volcano is under Alert Level 1.

Her tiny arms carried a family’s fate, proving that love can turn even the weakest into the strongest

Twelve years is barely enough time to understand the world, let alone negotiate with the fury of an open sea. Yet, when a sudden squall capsized her family’s boat near Batbatan Island, Cherry Ann Mateo was forced into an immediate, brutal adulthood. Surrounded by chaos and a horizon empty of rescue, she didn't succumb to panic. Instead, she chose the water. She spent the next six hours translating raw terror into a steady, rhythmic stroke, covering six kilometers of unforgiving ocean to reach the shores of Culasi. It was an astonishing feat of endurance, driven not by a guarantee of survival, but by the quiet certainty that her family’s lives hung on every movement of her arms.

Bravery is rarely loud; more often, it is a series of quiet, exhausting decisions made when giving up is the easiest option. When the Philippine Coast Guard and her community later recognized her actions, they weren't just honoring a remarkable rescue—they were acknowledging the sheer strength of human will found in the most unexpected places. Her story resonated far beyond the shores of Antique because it forces us to reconsider the boundaries of youth and capability. We often look at children as fragile beings to be shielded from the world's harsh realities, but sometimes, they are the ones who remind us exactly how much weight the human spirit can bear when fueled by love…

„Kauft uns leer!“ Räumungsverkauf läuft – Betreiber muss Laden aufgeben

Stand:

Emmanuel John Abris

Philippine stocks could face renewed pressure this week as investors weigh the prospect of another interest rate hike against rising oil prices and a weaker peso, according to F. Yap Securities Inc.

In its outlook for Oct. 12 to Oct. 16, the brokerage urged investors to remain selective ahead of third-quarter earnings and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy meeting on Oct. 22.

Why young professionals are not good at AI

Why young professionals are not good at AI

Tom Oliver

When a new technology arrives, owners often turn to the youngest people in the room. They learn the tools quickly. Surely they should lead the way? With artificial intelligence (AI), that assumption can be expensive.

A young professional can produce an impressive strategy report without understanding the strategy. A CEO can mistake that report for evidence of expertise and act on it.

A Sunday reflection on God as our generous provider

A Sunday reflection on God as our generous provider

In today’s Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 23: 1-3a, 3b-4,5,6) it is said: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.”

In the Second Reading (Phil. 4: 12-14. 19-20), the apostle Paul said: “… In every circumstance and in all things, I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me… My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Reflecting on these verses, amid all the difficulties and challenges that we face in life — including scarcity and poverty—may we be encouraged to carry on by keeping in mind that we have a BIG and GENEROUS God who is our GREAT PROVIDER. —SL

7 Ways to become fearless

  1. If you have an urge to accomplish a goal, mentally plan out what it would take to accomplish that goal.
  2. Have priorities planned out but learn to live in the moment.
  3. Make a mental list of your 5 biggest fears. Work everyday on overcoming these fears; unless it's a venomous animal, let them one be.
  4. Mentally change your anxious and fearful thoughts into exciting and happy thoughts.
  5. Get to know yourself and the strengths you possess. Magnify those strengths.
  6. Revel in your uniqueness. There may be close to 7 billion people on this planet, but in the whole universe there is only one you.
  7. Take educated chances that interest you and do not fear the risks.
