At the moment, right this minute as we speak to her, Jennylyn Mercado considers herself a freelancer. She just ended her long-term contract with GMA, her home studio.

The veteran actress, a Kapuso for 20 years, clears she has no plans to bolt the studio that built her up.

“It’s now up to my managers to decide my future,” she told a media conference hosted by Ms. Rhea Anicoche-Tan of Beautederm. Jenn is the latest endorser of the beauty company celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. She is the face of Cristaux Retinol (anti-aging), Cristaux Vitamin C (brightening), and Cristaux Hydra-Beauty (anti-acne). 

Jennylyn also said she has no standing offer from ABS-CBN, although she’s open to accepting projects from all producers. She also announced that she and her husband, Dennis Trillo, have opened their own production company, Brightburn.

According to Ms. Rhea, character is a priority when choosing an endorser. She finds Jennylyn simple and too down to earth.

“She comes bareface, eats with my staff, a cowboy.”

At the Beautederm mediacon held at Solaire North, Jennylyn proudly admitted she’s already 37, to which Rhea Tan, 43 but looking 34, said aging is a blessing.   

“I can’t help it. I came from a reality show (Starstruck). We’re used to telling the truth,” she said.

The veteran actress added she may have sensitive skin, yet it won’t stop her from engaging in her favorite sport, motorcycle riding.

MMFF goes to New York, ‘Fiesta In America' hosts

‘Fiesta In America,’ the longest-running trade and multi-cultural event on the East Coast of the United States, will host the New York edition of the Metro Manila International Film Festival in early 2025. The festival will bring some films from MMFF 2024 to the East Coast. MIFF debuted on the West Coast early this year.

Fernando Mendez, president and founder of Fiesta in America, announced in a media launch on July 24 in Quezon City that slots are still open for more Philippine business operators and LGUs who may want to take advantage of the many opportunities awaiting them in the wide American market.

Mendez said over 10,000 Filipino-Americans and around 50,000 additional mall visitors traditionally visit the biggest indoor trade and culture exposition mounted by a Filipino group yearly for the past 26 years.

Exposed to floodwaters? DOH recommends immediate consultation, treatment

Amid widespread flooding caused by “Carina” and the southwest monsoon, the Department of Health (DOH) emphasized on Wednesday, July 24, the importance of seeking medical attention promptly for people exposed to floodwaters.

Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa, in a statement, said it is better to avoid floods and mud to prevent leptospirosis.

“Sa mga kailangang lumusong, gumamit ng bota hanggang tuhod. Hugasan agad ang katawan ng malinis na tubig at sabon pagkatapos” (For those who need to wade through, use knee-high boots. Immediately wash your body with clean water and soap afterward),” Herbosa said. "Kumonsulta agad sa doktor, wag maging kampante kasi matagal lumabas ang sintomas” (Consult a doctor immediately; do not be complacent as symptoms can take time to appear),” he added.

Understanding leptospirosis

DOH explained that leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted by many animals, such as rodents and other vermin.

Waste products, such as urine and feces of an infected animal, especially rats, contaminate the soil, water, and vegetation. is a zoonotic disease, affecting both animals and humans, caused by the Leptospira bacterium found in contaminated water or soil.

“Leptospira bacteria can enter the body through breaks in the skin, or the eyes, nose, and mouth. Infected animal urine, like that from infected rats, can mix with floodwater and come into contact with people wading through or playing in it,” DOH said.

Seeking early treatment

DOH warned that without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, trouble breathing, and even death.

“People must consult doctors immediately after being exposed to (wading or playing in) floodwaters as there is a preventive antibiotic prescription,” DOH said.

Symptoms of leptospirosis may include fever, vomiting, nausea, muscle pain, and headache.
“Some cases have distinct pain in the calf muscles and reddish eyes,” DOH said. Severe cases may also present with jaundice (yellowish body discoloration), dark-colored urine, light-colored stool, low urine output, and severe headache.

“Many of these symptoms can be mistaken for other diseases; some people have no symptoms,” DOH warned.

DOH noted that it generally takes 2-30 days to get sick after contact with the bacteria that cause leptospirosis.

Meanwhile, DOH announced that teleconsultation is free through Hotline Number 1552 of the National Patient Navigation & Referral Center.

Aside from those who waded through potentially contaminated water, mud, or soil (such as floods, fields, plantations, nests, canals, streams, lakes, rivers), individuals who consumed food or drink that may have been contaminated by sick animals or who have any symptoms after exposure to rain or contaminated water should seek early consultation and treatment at the nearest health facility.

Kylie Padilla will ‘tip the balance’ in ‘Asawa Ng Asawa Ko’

MANILA, Philippines — Kylie Padilla has entered the picture of “Asawa Ng Asawa Ko” as Hannah, the original wife and former partner of Leon (played by Joem Bascon). The versatile actress has been working on set for over two weeks now. Her character will add another interesting and intriguing layer to the thickening drama that unfolds every night in the GMA Prime series.

“She’s very ambitious and has a bit of a rebellious streak. If she wants something, she’s going to do everything,” said Kylie about her impression and understanding of her character in a recent group interview.

Everyone is excited about how Hannah will “tip the balance” and change the “Asawa Ng Asawa Ko” narrative course. Leon and Cristy (portrayed by Jasmine Curtis-Smith) are engaged to get married.

“I’m just having fun portraying my character. I love my character,” shared Kylie, who was part of “Mga Lihim ni Urduja” and made a guest appearance in “Black Rider” last year. “Alam mo kapag nag-trabaho ako na love na love ko yung character ko (you know when I work on a character that I really love), I don’t even think. I just perform. Ganun yung feeling ko dito.”

Kylie recalled that the role was offered to her a month ago. She inquired about the nitty-gritty of it, so to speak. And it was a yes for her. After all, she had enough time to take a break, to recharge, and to be ready to take on a new character. By the way, she’s also doing “Encantadia Chronicles: Sang’gre” on the side.

Given the past between Hannah and Leon and their relationship dynamics, Kylie will have more scenes with another reliable actor, Joem, who has an easy and breezy working experience with her.

“It’s their show, I’m just a guest. To hear it from a co-star, it’s a big deal. It feels good,” said Kylie. “Ang galing din kasi nila. I think it depends on who you are acting with. (It’s) less work kung may binibigay sa’yo. You know they’re all giving actors and direk Laurice (Guillen) is an actor’s director. I’m so grateful. So, I think I can just give back what they’re giving me.”

Asked what other details on Hannah she can share with everyone, Kylie said: “With her, kasi late dumating sa kanya yung motherly instinct (her appreciation of maternal instinct came to her later in life). She got pregnant and gave birth at 17. She’s very young.”

“Kinailangan kong intindihin kung paano niya nagawang iwan yung family niya, iniwan niya yung anak niya, yung asawa niya (as an actress, I needed to understand why she left her family — her child and her husband. At first, I couldn’t grasp why she had done it. That’s where I had to do the hard work to understand, added she. “Kasi ‘pag may character ka, kailangan may empathy ka talaga sa character mo (when you’re playing a character, you have to empathize with her). Otherwise, you cannot deliver. There’s no truth in the eyes at all. I needed to understand her and without judgment.”

What would probably be the reaction of viewers once they’d seen Hannah’s real identity and intention in the story?

“Baka mainis sila sa una, feeling ko (I feel they might get annoyed or dislike her),” said Kylie. But then, once they get to know Hannah, mamahalin din nila si Hannah. Sana (they will love her, hopefully).”

Eventually, Hannah will become a member of the armed group KALASAG. The idea of doing action-packed and adrenaline-rush scenes thrills Kylie, who also has a penchant for the action genre.

Away from the klieg lights, Kylie is a young mom to two sons, Alas Joaquin and Axl Romeo.

“‘Mama, ‘wag ka nang umalis (Mama, please don’t leave),’” said Kylie of her children’s reaction and plead whenever she goes to work. “I think parang mas gusto ko na ganun kaysa sanay sila na wala ako (it seems that I like that instead of them being used to my absence). I think it also teaches them independence in some way. Tsaka may healthy space na ma-mi-miss namin ang isa’t-isa (and there’s healthy space that allows us to miss each other).”

With that, Kylie is a picture of a happy working mom and actress.

VP Sara, family fly to Germany

Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio flew to Germany with her family and mother early morning on Wednesday, July 24.

The Vice President was seen at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 with her husband, their children and her mother Elizabeth Zimmerman. 

The plane left at 1:50 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, and is expected to land in Dubai for a connecting flight to Munich, Germany.

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) has yet to confirm the travel. 

Blackpink to stage world tour, comeback in 2025

MANILA, Philippines — YG Entertainment founder and producer Yang Hyun-suk announced that Korean girl group Blackpink will have its much-anticipated comeback next year.

Yang also announced that the girl group will have a world tour next in 2025. 

The producer, however, did not disclose more details on Blackpink's comeback. 

Composed of Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa and Rosé, Blackpink last performed in the country last March 2023 via their "Born Pink" world tour in Philippine Arena in Bulacan. 

Blackpink will have a fan event on August 8, which will be limited to 88 participants. The time and date will be announced at a later time. 

To join the fan event, fans need to share a post expressing their love and support for the group on Weverse using the hashtag #OUR_AREA_WITH_BLINK.

Canino, 16, the reigning champion of the Philippine National Women’s Chess Championships, will be tested as she is expected to battle top woodpushers to boost her bid of Woman Grandmaster status.

The Far Eastern University standout will open her European campaign on Aug. 3 up to 10 in Vlissingen, Netherlands where she is scheduled to participate in the HZ University of Applied Sciences Chess Tournament.

She will then go to Germany for the Dortmund Open slated Aug. 10 to 18, followed by the Open Internacional d’escacs Santis-Ciutat de Barcelona on Aug. 23 until Sept. 1.

Canino hopes the tournaments are enough to polish her game in time for her biggest assignment -- the Chess Olympiad -- which unfolds on Sept. 10 to 23 in Budapest, Hungary.

Before that Olympiad, Canino along with her coach and National Chess Federation of the Philippines chief executive officer Jayson Gonzales will join hands with WGM Janelle Mae Frayna and WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda, who is already competing in Switzerland.

“This is in preparation for November in AIMAG and World Olympiad in September as well as for her to become a WGM,” said Gonzales, whose trip is bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission and backed by the NCFP and Philippine Olympic Committee. 

The Philippine contingent will return to the country on Sept. 3 then set to leave after a few days with the male woodpushers before they fly to Budapest.

Thirty years ago, I remember a teenager named Hazel Reyes. She was knocking on my door. The shy newbie wanted to borrow my boots because she was going to audition in an ABS-CBN afternoon program in the 90s entitled “Ang TV,” directed by Johnny Manahan. 

A young woman asked me for tips on how to get on a TV show because I was already a part of the program. She never made it to Ang TV because she fainted from anxiety. Fast-forward 30 years, and she is now Ara Mina, an award-winning actress and singer who recently celebrated her 30-year career with a grand concert titled "All of Me" at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on July 11.

The event was momentous, highlighting Ara's remarkable career and contributions to the entertainment industry. No longer does she need my boots. I am thinking of borrowing her emerald green gown although I am sure her cup size won’t fit me. I’m a cup B, and Ara… world cup! Just kidding!
