Her tiny arms carried a family’s fate, proving that love can turn even the weakest into the strongest

Twelve years is barely enough time to understand the world, let alone negotiate with the fury of an open sea. Yet, when a sudden squall capsized her family’s boat near Batbatan Island, Cherry Ann Mateo was forced into an immediate, brutal adulthood. Surrounded by chaos and a horizon empty of rescue, she didn't succumb to panic. Instead, she chose the water. She spent the next six hours translating raw terror into a steady, rhythmic stroke, covering six kilometers of unforgiving ocean to reach the shores of Culasi. It was an astonishing feat of endurance, driven not by a guarantee of survival, but by the quiet certainty that her family’s lives hung on every movement of her arms.

Bravery is rarely loud; more often, it is a series of quiet, exhausting decisions made when giving up is the easiest option. When the Philippine Coast Guard and her community later recognized her actions, they weren't just honoring a remarkable rescue—they were acknowledging the sheer strength of human will found in the most unexpected places. Her story resonated far beyond the shores of Antique because it forces us to reconsider the boundaries of youth and capability. We often look at children as fragile beings to be shielded from the world's harsh realities, but sometimes, they are the ones who remind us exactly how much weight the human spirit can bear when fueled by love…

Never do these 7 Mistakes in Life

1. Forget your health – If you do not think about your body and mind, problems would come in the later stages.

2. Ignore your relationships – Not showing love and care to family and friends can lead to regret.

3. Stay in your comfort zone – Sticking to what is easy will never let you learn and grow.

4. Do not manage your money – In case you fail to save or plan, you might face some difficult times later in life.

5. Often get angry – Holding grudges harms you more than anyone else.

6. Fear failure – In case of fearing mistakes, you may never reach where you want to be.

7. Quit learning – If you are not improving yourself, you might feel you are not achieving anything and won't be happy.

„Kauft uns leer!“ Räumungsverkauf läuft – Betreiber muss Laden aufgeben

Stand:

Philippine stocks could face renewed pressure this week as investors weigh the prospect of another interest rate hike against rising oil prices and a weaker peso, according to F. Yap Securities Inc.

In its outlook for Oct. 12 to Oct. 16, the brokerage urged investors to remain selective ahead of third-quarter earnings and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy meeting on Oct. 22.

Why young professionals are not good at AI

Why young professionals are not good at AI

Tom Oliver

When a new technology arrives, owners often turn to the youngest people in the room. They learn the tools quickly. Surely they should lead the way? With artificial intelligence (AI), that assumption can be expensive.

A young professional can produce an impressive strategy report without understanding the strategy. A CEO can mistake that report for evidence of expertise and act on it.

A Sunday reflection on God as our generous provider

A Sunday reflection on God as our generous provider

In today’s Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 23: 1-3a, 3b-4,5,6) it is said: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.”

In the Second Reading (Phil. 4: 12-14. 19-20), the apostle Paul said: “… In every circumstance and in all things, I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me… My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Reflecting on these verses, amid all the difficulties and challenges that we face in life — including scarcity and poverty—may we be encouraged to carry on by keeping in mind that we have a BIG and GENEROUS God who is our GREAT PROVIDER. —SL

7 Ways to become fearless

  1. If you have an urge to accomplish a goal, mentally plan out what it would take to accomplish that goal.
  2. Have priorities planned out but learn to live in the moment.
  3. Make a mental list of your 5 biggest fears. Work everyday on overcoming these fears; unless it's a venomous animal, let them one be.
  4. Mentally change your anxious and fearful thoughts into exciting and happy thoughts.
  5. Get to know yourself and the strengths you possess. Magnify those strengths.
  6. Revel in your uniqueness. There may be close to 7 billion people on this planet, but in the whole universe there is only one you.
  7. Take educated chances that interest you and do not fear the risks.

Beyond clean hands

THE dinner invitation in Luke 11:37-41 quickly turns into a spiritual checkup. A Pharisee is shocked because Jesus skips the ritual washing before eating. The issue, however, is not hygiene. It is hypocrisy. Jesus immediately exposes a perennial temptation: "You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness."

It is one of the strongest warnings Christ gives against legalism and formalism—the tendency to reduce religion to rules, rituals, appearances, and external correctness while neglecting the conversion of the heart.

Rules have their place. Rituals matter. Discipline is indispensable. The Church herself treasures them because they help form and express faith. But they become dangerous when they are mistaken for holiness itself. They are means, not the end. The end is union with God through charity.

That was the problem confronting many religious leaders in Christ's time. They had become meticulous about external observance but careless about the interior life. They could detect the smallest ceremonial violation while overlooking pride, envy, greed, and lack of mercy. They measured sanctity by visible compliance instead of invisible love.

The danger has not disappeared. It simply wears modern clothes. In the Philippine setting, where religious practice remains vibrant, this Gospel deserves serious reflection. Churches are full during fiestas, Holy Week, Simbang Gabi, and major feast days. Processions draw thousands. Devotional images are beautifully adorned. Religious organizations flourish. These are genuine blessings that testify to a people's enduring faith.

But they also invite an uncomfortable question: Do our external expressions always correspond to an interior conversion?

One can faithfully complete novenas yet refuse reconciliation within the family. One can wear religious medals while engaging in corruption. One can generously sponsor church activities but exploit employees, evade taxes, spread gossip, or harbor deep resentments. One can even become an expert in Catholic practices while remaining a stranger to Christian charity.

Legalism also breeds another spiritual disease: a judgmental attitude. When religion becomes primarily about external performance, people naturally begin comparing themselves with others. We classify who is "good," who is "bad," who is "orthodox," who is "lukewarm," often based on appearances alone. We become quick to point out another person's failures while remaining blind to our own interior poverty.

The Lord dismantles this mentality. God's gaze penetrates beyond behavior into motives, intentions, and circumstances that only he fully knows. What appears exemplary externally may hide pride. What appears imperfect may conceal heroic fidelity known only to God.

This is why Christ prescribes an unexpected remedy: "Give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you." He shifts attention from ritual precision to generous self-giving. Charity purifies because it attacks selfishness at its root. A heart that truly loves God cannot remain indifferent to the needs of others. Genuine worship naturally overflows into justice, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and humble service.

The Gospel therefore calls every believer to examine not only what he does but also why he does it. Are our religious practices bringing us closer to Christ? Are they making us kinder, humbler, more patient, more truthful, and less self-centered? Or have they become badges of superiority that feed our ego?

Clean hands are good. A clean heart is indispensable. Christ did not come merely to improve religious etiquette. He came to transform the human heart from within. Once that happens, the outside will eventually take care of itself.
