Intensified magmatic unrest persists

Published Nov 3, 2026 09:51 am

At A Glance

  • The ash emission event occurred at 8:22 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.
  • The event generated a plume that rose 1.6 kilometers above the summit crater before drifting southwest.
  • Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, which has been in effect since Oct. 30, when Phivolcs announced that the volcano had entered "a new phase of magmatic eruption."

Mayon Volcano in Albay continued to show signs of unrest on Tuesday, Nov. 3, as an ash emission event was recorded at its summit crater following the escalation of its status to Alert Level 3 (intensified magmatic unrest) on Oct. 30, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The event occurred at 8:22 a.m., generating a plume that rose 1.6 kilometers above the summit crater before drifting southwest.
From midnight on Nov. 2 to midnight on Nov. 3, Phivolcs had recorded 13 volcanic earthquakes and one rockfall signal.
During the 24-hour monitoring period, a fair crater glow was visible to the naked eye while the volcano exhibited minor strombolian activity, characterized by short explosive bursts that eject glowing volcanic materials and produce brief lava fountains.
Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, which has been in effect since Oct. 30, when Phivolcs announced that the volcano had entered “a new phase of magmatic eruption.”
Alert Level 3 indicates relatively high volcanic unrest and an increased likelihood of a hazardous eruption, as magma is close to or has already reached the crater.
At this alert level, volcanic earthquakes and tremors may become more frequent, sulfur dioxide emissions may further increase, and rockfalls may occur in the summit area.
Other signs of unrest include vigorous steaming, sustained crater glow, and persistent swelling of the volcano's edifice.
Phivolcs reiterated that entry into Mayon's six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) must be prohibited.

How do I increase positive thinking and positive energy?

“How can I think positively when nothing good is happening in my life?” I had once asked my mother in sheer agitation.

“Think about Lord Rama and Krishna, who also couldn't avoid suffering while living on this earth,” my mother answered.

So, while living in this world, suffering will always be there because life is never a straight line. Now, it depends on us how we choose to live our lives – happily or sadly.

Since we cannot always control what happens in our lives, we can gradually learn to change how we respond to it.

When I took responsibility for my mistakes and sufferings instead of blaming others, I felt empowered. It felt like I was the owner of my life and could rebuild it again and again. This made me smile.

As a psychologist, I often ask my clients to focus on what they have and express gratitude. It's impossible to have nothing to be grateful for.

If you are not rich, look at people who are struggling to manage three meals a day. At least, you can easily afford your food.

I often look at people with physical disabilities and feel blessed with my body. I feel grateful for the abilities I have and remind myself not to take them for granted.

I thank the universe throughout the day for everything I have – my house, job, family, friends, health, and writing skills.

I make positive affirmations and say them aloud in the open air: I am a happy soul. I love people, and people love me. I achieve everything I aspire to.

Sometimes, I sit with my arms open, welcoming the universe and its abundance.

I count my blessings in my diary, which fills me with positive energy. I often read good books on positive thinking and how the universe works. This strengthens my belief.

I hope this helps you too, dear readers.

NAIA TRAVELER TIPS & IDEAS AHEAD OF ASEAN SUMMIT 2026

With the Philippines hosting the 49th ASEAN Summit on November 16–18, 2026, travelers flying to and from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) should prepare for possible traffic congestion, road closures, security measures, and flight schedule adjustments.
15 ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TIPS
1. LEAVE EARLIER THAN USUAL
Allow extra travel time going to NAIA. Do not follow your usual departure schedule from home.
2. CHECK YOUR FLIGHT STATUS
Check your airline's official website, mobile app, email, and SMS before leaving.
3. MONITOR AIRLINE ADVISORIES
Watch out for cancellation, rescheduling, terminal changes, and other important announcements.
4. AVOID RESTRICTED ROADS
From November 9, expect stricter road restrictions around affected areas in Pasay and the PICC complex.
5. PLAN AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE
Use navigation apps and monitor official MMDA traffic advisories.
6. CONFIRM YOUR AIRPORT TERMINAL
Make sure you know whether your flight departs from Terminal 1, 2, or 3.
7. CHECK IN ONLINE
Complete online check-in whenever available to save time at the airport.
8. ARRANGE YOUR AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION
Book your airport transfer early and coordinate with your driver regarding possible road closures.
9. KEEP YOUR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS READY
Prepare your passport, valid identification, boarding pass, and other required documents.
10. AVOID LAST-MINUTE TRAVEL
Do not wait until the last minute to leave home.
11. KEEP YOUR PHONE FULLY CHARGED
Bring a power bank and maintain internet access for travel updates.
12. PREPARE EXTRA MONEY
Set aside an emergency budget for unexpected transportation or travel expenses.
13. FOLLOW AIRPORT SECURITY INSTRUCTIONS
Cooperate with airport personnel and security officers.
14. CONTACT YOUR AIRLINE DIRECTLY
For flight concerns, rebooking, refunds, or schedule confirmation, coordinate with your airline.
15. STAY CALM AND COOPERATIVE
Expect possible delays and remain patient. Follow official instructions at all times.
Here are some practical suggestions:
Consider staying at a hotel near NAIA if your flight is very early.
Avoid unnecessary trips around Pasay and Manila Bay.
Inform family members about your travel schedule.
Take screenshots of your confirmed booking and boarding details.
Have a backup transportation plan.
If possible, avoid scheduling important appointments immediately after arrival.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
The ASEAN Summit is a major international event. Traffic management, security arrangements, and airport operations may affect normal travel routines.
Passengers should rely on verified announcements from airlines, NAIA authorities, MMDA, and government agencies.
Remember: Being early is better than missing your flight.
