Mercy Sunot, one of the powerhouse vocalists of OPM rock act Aegis has passed away due to cancer.
She was 48.
The band confirmed this in an offical statement.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Mercy, one of the beloved vocalists of AEGIS Band. She bravely fought her battle with cancer but has now found peace and rest.
"Mercy’s voice wasn’t just a part of AEGIS—it was a voice that brought comfort, joy, and strength to so many. She has touched countless lives, inspiring fans and lifting spirits with every song she sang. Her passion, warmth, and unforgettable presence on stage will forever be cherished in our hearts.
"Let us come together to celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.
"Mercy, thank you for the music, the love, and the memories. You will be deeply missed." it read.
Mercy succumbed on Nov. 17 (Nov. 18, Manila time) while undergoing treatment at the Stanford Hospital and Clinics in San Francisco, California.
She was said to have battling Stage 3 breast cancer and lung cancer.
A day prior, Mercy posted a video on TikTok asking for prayers from fans and family.
Mercy's sister and fellow Aegis member Juliet Sunot also expressed grief about her passing in a Facebook post.
"The hardest thing I’ve ever done, I wear a mask from day to day and try to cope in my own way. I’ll miss you ‘til we meet again and long for you each day ‘til then. There’s now a hole no one can fill within my heart," Juliet wrote.
Love Radio Manila also gave their condolences to Mercy's family and band members.
Aegis rose to fame in the 1990s with their gut-wrenching and soulful songs including "Luha," Basang-basa Sa Ulan," "Halik," among many others.
The band’s songs were featured in the musical “Rak of Aegis.”
Aegis is composed of Mercy and her siblings Juliet and Kris.
Also part of the band are Stella Pabico, Rey Abenoja, Rowena Adriano, and Vilma Goloviogo.
The band commemorated their 25th anniversary with a concert last year.
