Beware of secularism

By Fr. Roy Cimagala

THE problem of secularism is that it promotes a social order this is neither connected to religion nor critical of it. It denies the influence of religion in our social order. It simply wants to be guided by a certain consensus derived from what is considered practical in the present life itself.

But religion is not simply a private affair. God is the author and ruler not only of individuals, but also of societies. While the relation of Church and State depends on a number of circumstances which cannot be determined by a general rule, truth is religion is a social as well as an individual and personal duty. It cannot and should not be ignored.

The so-called separation of Church and State should not be understood in an absolute way. While it’s correct that the State should not have a state religion nor promote or condemn any particular religion or religious viewpoint, developing a relation between State and the different religions should be promoted. The State should also respect the views of non-believers.

But the Church cannot renounce her mission to teach the truths she has received from her Divine Founder. While fully recognizing the value of the present life, the Church cannot look upon it as an end in itself, but only as a movement toward a future life for which preparation must be made by compliance with the laws of nature and the laws of God.

For Catholics and Christians in general, their belief that the present life is a preparation if not a testing ground for an eternal life that is a supernatural sharing of the very life of God, should be respected. And because of that, their moral teachings should be respected too. The government cannot impose something that is considered immoral by their religion.

Secularism gives an opening to certain ideologies like Wokeism, neo-Marxism, etc. that actually are harmful to social justice and order. That is why we should be careful of secularism. Rather, we should intensify our religious and spiritual life, our relation with God, so that the proper social justice and order can be obtained.

Of course, the Church cannot impose its teachings on anyone, but it should be given a free space to be itself, to evangelize, to celebrate the sacraments, and to do the works of education, charity, mercy and justice without undue interference from the government.

Besides, the Church asks—and if necessary, demands—that the State respect the “sanctuary of conscience,” so that the Church’s people are not required by law to do things the Church teaches as immoral.

It’s unfortunate, for example, that in the US there was this “Contraceptive Mandate” issued in 2012 that turned the Catholic Church’s charitable and medical facilities into State agencies that facilitate practices that the Church believes are gravely evil.

Indeed, this delicate issue of Church and State relation should be thoroughly studied by our Church and State leaders, and appropriate agreements should be made. The separation of Church and State should not be understood as a mandate to ignore each other. There has to be constant communication and consultation between the two, because both work for the same people or constituents, though in different aspects of life.

Though there is autonomy in both of them, it should be acknowledged that “there is no realm of worldly affairs which can be withdrawn from the Creator and His dominion.”

P-pop girl group KAIA shares music advice from SB19

KAIA’s Charice, Sophia, Angela, Alexa and Charlotte share how SB19 helped them when they were just starting out as a group up until now that they’ve released their new single Walang Biruan. Photo from KAIA's Facebook page

MANILA, Philippines — The members of the P-pop girl group KAIA are grateful for the support that they are getting from other P-pop groups, especially SB19.

In an exclusive chat with The STAR at the Sony Music Philippines office, Charice, Sophia, Angela, Alexa and Charlotte of KAIA detailed how SB19 encouraged and helped them when they were just starting out as a group up until now that they’ve released their new single Walang Biruan.

In fact, Pablo, Justin and Josh hopped on to the Walang Biruan song and performed the dance with them as seen on their social media pages.

The girls shared that SB19 congratulated them upon the release of the track and the music video.

“I think one of the lessons that has stuck with me since we were trainees is that practice makes perfect,” offered Sophia.

“Like me, personally, I know the feeling na when I perform na kulang sa (but lacking in) practice as compared to nakapag-practice talaga. So that’s when I realized that it’s really right. That’s why they perform that way because they do this. I’m inspired to be like that also.”

KAIA is among the performing groups at the international event, Round Festival, in Laos.

Charice, on the other hand, recalled that when they churned out their debut song Kaya, they were too shy to show it to SB19 members. “We showed it (lyrics) to Kuya Pablo and Kuya Josh, and then takot na takot kami like, ‘Don’t read it, don’t read it.’ As in we were embarrassed to show the lyrics to them,” she said.

“But Kuya Pablo read (the lyrics) and he told us not to be afraid or laugh at your work. Your work, whatever that is, that’s where you unleash your artistry. So be confident and believe in yourself.”

Angela confessed that there were times when she felt like she didn’t do her best. “So they told me that whatever happens today, you have to do better next time. It’s like every day is a new day and do your best in every performance,” she said.

“Our resources are not that much as a group. I remember Kuya Justin, who said to me before, to do your best even in the simple things. Pagandahin mo na yung simple.”

She added that Josh would still continue to give them advice to do their thing as a group. “Kuya Josh really believes in us. He would always tell us that we will become famous,” Angela said. “He would always promote us and we’re very happy that he would include us in his shows.”

For Alexa, what she learned from SB19 is to “stay true to yourself.” “Because sometimes, there are some people who would give advice and opinion on what we should do. But at that time, when I experienced that, Kuya Pablo said, ‘It’s their opinion and advice but you don’t have to follow everything most of the time.’ He said that we know better, alam namin yung experience namin and dapat gawin sa mga gagawin namin. So it’s better if you’re the one who will decide on what you should do with your artistry.”

SB19’s Pablo and Justin hop on the Walang Biruan dance challenge with KAIA.

The most memorable advice from SB19 for Charlotte was to not be afraid to make mistakes. “Because in that way, you will improve and grow as an artist,” she explained.

“So if ever you make a mistake, take that as your motivation to do better,” she continued.

“And especially when we were rookies, because they’ve really monitored us since our rookie days. Their simple advice motivated us to do better. Until now, we carried it with us.”

SB19 was one of the reasons why KAIA and other groups entered the P-pop music scene, the group asserted. “We look up to them as our role models and seniors,” said Angela.

KAIA’s Walang Biruan, now out on various platforms, is about confessing your feelings to someone you love.

“Regardless of your gender, when you like a person, you can start telling that person and inform them of how you feel,” expressed Angela.

The bubblegum pop track reflects the group’s “very fun, very youthful, and very energetic” vibes, she added.

Slow Sunday mornings with a Schnoodle

If she could, brand strategist and creative consultant Monique Madsen would invite Martha Stewart over for more Martha hacks and home tips.

SUNDAY COMFORT Monique Madsen lounging at home in a Natori kaftan

I met Monique Madsen in the middle of nowhere, on the high seas of Hong Kong, aboard the Genting Dream, a 151,300-ton, 335-meter-long, 40-meter-wide, and 18-deck-tall dream of a cruise ship run by Dream Cruises out of the former British colony.

A former editor and associate publisher, Monique is now an entrepreneur, running her own consulting company Modeme as a brand strategist and creative director specializing in personal branding, marketing, digital branding, and social media services.

She’s a true-blue city girl, even in the 18 years she spent discovering the world, making a place for herself in cities like Copenhagen and Shanghai. While she has more control of her time now that she has her own company, Monique is still in love with downtime, treasuring every opportunity to sit back and relax, to live life at a pace that doesn’t anymore involve running in heels. She enjoys dining out with friends, doting on her three-year-old schnoodle, and consuming copious amounts of black coffee if it isn’t happy hour.

BRUNCHTIME With her schnoodle Malthe and her bestfriend, Argentinian consul Fabricio Sordoni

What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
A very slow morning! I have slow mornings daily as I wake up quite early, but on Sundays, it’s very relaxing to know I can sleep in if I want to.

Best Sunday ever in your memory.
Going to the park with my dog Malthe with friends and their dogs too, then heading to Wildflour for brunch or going to the Sunday market together at Salcedo Village. It’s always a leisurely brunch or a late lunch with friends.

Best word to describe Sunday.
Slow!

PERK ME UP Wake up to the smell of coffee.jpg
PERK ME UP Wake up to the smell of coffee

Book you would recommend as a Sunday read
I’m not reading a book right now, but on Sunday mornings I love having my coffee while reading “Modern Love” articles in The New York Times before browsing news headlines.

What is the most extravagant thing you could think of having or doing on a Sunday?
I love tinkering around my home, whether tending to my plants, editing my closet, or doing the laundry! It’s the kind of downtime I rarely have these days as I usually end up still socializing on a Sunday.

What would be the perfect topic for Sunday brunch conversation?
I love Sunday brunches with my friends— it’s the best! Conversations span from random everyday things, recent trips, dating anecdotes to more serious subjects like politics, life goals, and career plans.

MARKET DAY Sunday morning a the Salcedo Weekend Market.jpg
MARKET DAY Sunday morning a the Salcedo Weekend Market

Best movie or series that once made your Sunday
Great Expectations, the 1998 movie with De Niro, Ethan Hawke, Chris Cooper, and Gwyneth Paltrow. I’m a huge Dickens fan, I buy hardbounds of his when I travel. I know movie versions are usually disappointing but this one is really good. I cried buckets, ugly cried, and it felt so good.

A quotable quote about Sunday that’s made for you
“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” It’s a Greek proverb, also a line from one of my favorite Netflix series After Life. I love this because I love trees— and on Sundays I love going to the park.

What does “wear your Sunday Best” mean to you?
Loungewear, my Natori robe, or silk pjs, but if I’m going out for a proper brunch—anything in linen and in white.

If you were to write a book about the Sundays of your life, what would be the title?
There’s not enough hours on a Sunday.

PLAYDATE Monique's three-year-old schnoodle Malthe.jpg
PLAYDATE Monique's three-year-old schnoodle Malthe

Best Sunday companion.
My dog Malthe. I love snuggles in the couch and long, off-leash walks in the park with him. If I could invite someone I find most intriguing, I’d invite Martha Stewart over for sure. Sundays are an errand day and I can never have enough Martha life hacks, like how to get stubborn stains out of my whites, how to store wool and cashmere in this weather, and how to make a mean espresso martini to sip in between chores. I think my dad is the best Sunday companion too. He is the most interesting person to me. He’s a well-read, He’s an early riser who walks two hours every morning and reads up on everything, whether current events or politics or history. He is so old-school and it’s simply refreshing to get the point of view of someone who’s off social media.

Best Sunday in your life.
It was with an amazing ex-boyfriend, apples, and coffee, telling stories, and laughing in bed.

Worst Sunday in your life.
Well, I’m 41. There’s been quite a few Sundays spent recovering from hangovers due to regrettable nightouts and one too many glasses of mixed drinks.

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT These dogs, meeting in the park, love Sundays too.jpg
WHO LET THE DOGS OUT These dogs, meeting in the park, love Sundays too

If Sunday were a flavor, what would this flavor be?
Avocado toasts for brunch. Better yet, eggs Benedict, black coffee, and more black coffee

Where in the world would you like to be next Sunday, if you can just go there by magic?
Honestly, after traveling and a few hectic weeks lately, I just want to be at home with my family.

Pixie dust dance magic: Ballet Philippines’ Peter Pan

BY PHILIP CU UNJIENG

AT A GLANCE

  • It’s a fun, entertaining classical ballet that showcases Filipino terpsichorean talent: Peter Pan, as conceptualized by BP’s artistic director, Misha Martynuk.

An excerpt from Ballet Philippines 'Peter Pan'

Ballet Philippines (BP) has a December surprise that should help bring added Christmas joy to this year’s holiday season. It’s a fun, entertaining classical ballet that showcases Filipino terpsichorean talent: Peter Pan, as conceptualized by BP’s artistic director, Misha Martynuk.

Ballet Philippines President Kathleen Liechtenstein was ready to remind us that the Dec. 6-8 performances at Solaire will also be our chance to watch what they’ll be bringing, along with Limang Daan, to cities such as Athens and Vienna next March, as Ballet Philippines will embark on a European tour.

image1 (1).jpeg
Ballet Philippines’ President Kathleen Liechtenstein

As Misha Martynuk explained, this Peter Pan ballet is his version, inspired by the original JM Barrie story. It will be a ballet for children, but it will also be something adults will appreciate. There will be a classical ballet approach with classic discipline and technique. Still, he’ll (Peter) be flying - and they plan to use elements in the original story such as the crocodile, Tinkerbell, and NeverNeverLand.

A different cast for each performance is something new that Misha will employ for this Peter Pan. It stands to be one of the biggest productions mounted by Ballet Philippines, and the promise is to make each performance magical.

In the interview portion of the media event, Misha was asked what his biggest challenge has been since he took over the reins of BP’s artistic direction. Without batting an eyelash, he immediately responded that it would have been Limang Daan, which was staged in March of this year.

As a history of the 500-year struggle of the Filipina, and with an Igorot woman, an overseas Filipina nurse, and a non-binary shaman as the lead characters, this Filipiniana ballet had him researching to understand the context better and give justice to his dance direction.

image4.jpeg

As for Kathleen, she fondly remembers how successful and inspirational Limang Daan was, and that’s precisely why it’ll be part of what will be performed when the company tours Europe and Japan next year. She mentioned how full-length Filipino ballets, inspired by folklore from Mindanao and Batanes, are presently on the proverbial drawing board.

And for now, we have a new, exciting Peter Pan to look forward to this December!

5000 Euro\t465,00 Euro/Monat\t472,50 Euro/Monat\t557,50 Euro/Monat
