Canino, 16, the reigning champion of the Philippine National Women’s Chess Championships, will be tested as she is expected to battle top woodpushers to boost her bid of Woman Grandmaster status.

The Far Eastern University standout will open her European campaign on Aug. 3 up to 10 in Vlissingen, Netherlands where she is scheduled to participate in the HZ University of Applied Sciences Chess Tournament.

She will then go to Germany for the Dortmund Open slated Aug. 10 to 18, followed by the Open Internacional d’escacs Santis-Ciutat de Barcelona on Aug. 23 until Sept. 1.

Canino hopes the tournaments are enough to polish her game in time for her biggest assignment -- the Chess Olympiad -- which unfolds on Sept. 10 to 23 in Budapest, Hungary.

Before that Olympiad, Canino along with her coach and National Chess Federation of the Philippines chief executive officer Jayson Gonzales will join hands with WGM Janelle Mae Frayna and WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda, who is already competing in Switzerland.

“This is in preparation for November in AIMAG and World Olympiad in September as well as for her to become a WGM,” said Gonzales, whose trip is bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission and backed by the NCFP and Philippine Olympic Committee.

The Philippine contingent will return to the country on Sept. 3 then set to leave after a few days with the male woodpushers before they fly to Budapest.

  • The concert was a star-studded affair, with an impressive lineup of guests and performers who added to the magic of the night.

Ara Mina

Thirty years ago, I remember a teenager named Hazel Reyes. She was knocking on my door. The shy newbie wanted to borrow my boots because she was going to audition in an ABS-CBN afternoon program in the 90s entitled “Ang TV,” directed by Johnny Manahan.

A young woman asked me for tips on how to get on a TV show because I was already a part of the program. She never made it to Ang TV because she fainted from anxiety. Fast-forward 30 years, and she is now Ara Mina, an award-winning actress and singer who recently celebrated her 30-year career with a grand concert titled "All of Me" at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on July 11.

The event was momentous, highlighting Ara's remarkable career and contributions to the entertainment industry. No longer does she need my boots. I am thinking of borrowing her emerald green gown although I am sure her cup size won’t fit me. I’m a cup B, and Ara… world cup! Just kidding!

The concert was a star-studded affair, with an impressive lineup of guests and performers who added to the magic of the night. The stage was graced by the presence of notable personalities such as Martin Nievera, Ogie Alcacid, Brod Pete, Senator Bong Revilla, her sister Christine Reyes, Ara’s daughter Mandy, and her husband Dave Almarinez. Their performances added an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the already electrifying event.

Throughout the concert, Ara mesmerized the audience with her flawless vocals, captivating stage presence, and heartfelt performances. Her journey in show business was not just a series of musical numbers, dance performances, and heartfelt speeches. It was a deeply emotional narrative, showcasing the highs and lows of her three-decade long career, and inviting the audience to share in her triumphs and struggles.

The concert not only served as a celebration of Ara's achievements but also as a testament to her enduring passion for music and performance. It was a night filled with nostalgia, laughter, and heartfelt moments that reminded everyone of the indelible mark Ara has made in the entertainment industry. Her unwavering dedication and love for her craft continue to inspire and command respect.

As the final notes echoed through the theater and the applause filled the air, Ara stood on stage, overwhelmed with gratitude and joy. "All of Me" was not just a concert but a tribute to a remarkable artist who has touched the hearts of many and continues to inspire with her talent and dedication.

In conclusion, Ara's "All of Me" concert was a resounding success, a fitting tribute to her illustrious career, and a night to remember for all fortunate enough to witness her talent shine on stage.

LIST: Cruise destinations, stops around the Philippines

TRAVEL AND TOURISM

Dolly Dy-Zulueta - Philstar.com

July 21, 2024 | 5:45pm

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has more than 7,000 islands spread across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Each island presents different pleasures and comforts depending on where they are located, how developed they are, and what nature has to offer.

The country is home to world-renowned white-sand beaches. It is a vacationist’s haven for its city attractions, mountain ranges, forest covers, extreme adventures and culinary traditions.

These are coveted travel destinations for both domestic and foreign tourists, who make sure they get to see and experience first-hand what the hottest Philippine destinations have to offer.

So, trips are planned according to one’s days off work — road trips to destinations that are not too far and are accessible by land travel, and plane rides for destinations separated by sea from one’s point of origin. These are traditional ways of getting to and from places one wants to visit.

But there is another way of getting to places, and it offers a totally different perspective — cruising.

Travel takes a bit longer, but it is more economical, and it is a whole new experience worth spending time on as travelers enjoy the breeze and the view from the sea.

Klook’s new partnership with 2Go brings the opportunity for travelers to arrive at popular island destinations by taking a cruise for as low as P2,290. From generous baggage allowance and readily available onboard entertainment to cozy meals, comfortable chairs and shortened travel time, traveling by water provides all the benefits and twice the fun.

Currently, 2Go offers routes to Coron, Puerto Princesa, Cebu and Caticlan.

If this has piqued your interest, transportation is not Klook’s only new offering.

At El Nido, visitors may experience the 3 Days/2 Nights Clear Waters Expedition in Palawan, which brings them across the many islands of the Calamian archipelago.

Further into this trip, they will discover the Darocotan shipwreck, and beautiful coral reefs alongside a marine conservationist who will guide guests through the snorkeling sessions. Additionally, this tour treats offers a feast of traditional dishes, such as grilled seafood, by the beachside.

The adventure does not end there. Islands away from the beautiful El Nido is the wonderous Coron. While the trip can be daunting, boarding the Coron-El Nido Ferry by Jomila Shipping Lines will reduce the 12-hour travel time by car to just about four hours. Alternatively, if coming from Manila, travelers can take the Manila to/from Coron Cruise by 2Go and sail in comfort to not miss out on the activities available in Coron, such as the Coron Electric Bike Tour.

The tour lets travelers visit the uncrowded gems on the island with an e-bike. With a local guide, the tour goes to Siete Pecados, which is a highly recommended snorkeling spot, the saltwater Maquinit Hot Springs, Cabo Beach, and a hearty lunch at Kina John’s Restaurant with the relaxing view of the rice fields.

Enjoy Coron's Electric Bike Tour.

Bohol is another tropical paradise that must be “discovered.” If coming from Cebu after taking the Manila to and from Cebu Cruise by 2Go, travelers have the option to take the skies or traverse the seas with Klook’s Cebu-Bohol Ferry by OceanJet.

The island’s classic destinations include the Baclayon Church and Chocolate Hills. In addition to these, Panglao Parasaling is an activity that should not be missed because it offers fliers with the amazing view of Bohol’s lush green islands, pristine beaches, and vibrant coral reefs.

Parasailing in Panglao, Bohol.

Travelers can end the trip on a high note by booking a Star City Ticket in Manila. With unlimited access to 30 rides and attractions in this thrilling amusement park, they are bound to experience some of the most endorphin-inducing attractions.

End your trip with a visit to Star City.

While the Chameleons mounted a strong resistance in the third set, the Crossovers displayed remarkable resilience, overturning a one-point deficit late in the frame. The one-hour, 33-minute victory mirrored their straight-set triumph over the Farm Fresh Foxies last Tuesday.

Kath Bell, who delivered an impressive 23-hit performance against the Foxies, fired 21 points and received solid support from Ara Galang, Mylene Paat, Mary Rhose Dapol and Shaya Adorador.

"Our mindset is to help Kath," said Galang, who scored four points against the Foxies. "We can't rely solely on our import, the locals need to contribute."

This collective effort propelled the Crossovers to their second consecutive win in the single-round-robin preliminaries among six teams.

Galang shone with an all-around performance, scoring 11 points, including seven attacks and four blocks. She also demonstrated her defensive prowess with 11 digs, earning the game's top honors.

Bell, who unloaded 19 attack points and two aces, spiked another impressive outing with 10 digs.

Jasmine Nabor tossed 12 excellent sets, while rookie Karen Verdeflor registered 10 excellent receptions.

Despite a spirited fightback from the Chameleons in the third set, where they briefly led 23-22 after a Jho Maraguinto hit, Chery Tiggo remained composed. Adorador fired an off-the-block to level the score, and after Trisha Genesis's attack error put Chery Tiggo at match point, Bell sealed the win with a backrow attack that deflected off Maraguinot's hands.

"Coach Kungfu Reyes told us to work hard and trust the team," said Galang, reflecting on the coach's instructions during their final huddle.

“Malaking bagay na panalo kasi nga galing kami dun sa straight-set din na game nung first game namin. Syempre mas maganda na ‘yung nakakauna eh, para at least ‘yung momentum bitbit namin,” said Reyes.

Adorador finished with six points, while Dapol and Jasmine Nabor added three markers each. Paat and Aby Maraño contributed two points apiece for the Crossovers, who are scarcely feeling the absence of Alas Pilipinas members Eya Laure and Jen Nierva, along with the injured EJ Laure, thanks to their deep roster.

Chery Tiggo will try to make it three straight against Galeries Tower on Thursday.

Nxled, which edged Galeries Tower in five, also last Tuesday, slipped to 1-1.

Middle Meegan Hart scored nine points while Lycha Ebon and Jho Maraguinot finished with eight and seven markers and Genesis and playmaker Janel Maraguinot combined for nine points for the Chameleons.

American middle blocker Meegan Hart struggled, finishing with only nine points off seven attacks and two blocks, while Lycha Ebon and Maraguinot chipped in eight and seven markers, respectively, and Genesis and playmaker Janel Maraguinot combined for nine points for the Chameleons.

Nxled will try to bounce back against Creamline, also on Thursday.
